Signature Sound Effect has a few examples that are just an onomatopoeia of the sound Potholed to the page of the work it comes from.

I'd like to bring the thread's attention to the following tropes with ZCEs:

Alpha Bitch, Amazon Brigade, Big Bad Friend, Broken Bird, Depraved Bisexual, Dirty Cop, Four-Philosophy Ensemble, The Group, The Hero Dies, Hooker with a Heart of Gold, Lovable Alpha Bitch, and Psycho Party Member.

All of them are littered with examples of the "example from work X" type (most of them character tropes, curiously).

Then there's Religious Horror and Psychological Horror, although I'm not sure if they're intended as indexes of those genres, or tropes about those genres. Seems to be a mixture of both.

The note has already been added to The Hecate Sisters but not all the ZC Es have been commented out. I've added context to the ones I could.

I found a bizarre case of "Reverse Zero Contest Example" in the Fan Fiction section of Troubling Unchildlike Behavior: the example is given sufficient detail, but the work it is from is not mentioned. What should we do with this?:

  • Rose Potter murders Professor Quirrel at the age of eleven, and encourages her friends to use lethal force by the age of fifteen. She's also in an active sexual relationship by about that time.

About half of the examples on The Perry Bible Fellowship have little to no context. The other half is just weblinks. But commenting them out will make the page look bare-bones.

I'm noticing that almost every single character page has ZC Es on them. Just double checking that the policy is that even character-type tropes on character pages need some basic exmplination, correct?

Dod Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I don't know the show well enough to fix more than a couple, so if anyone knows the show, please take a look.

Handsome Lech is commented out.

My work on Pretty Boy is more than just slow. (evil grin They somehow bore me — I probably prefer Tall, Dark, and Handsome Hunks cool.)

I'd actually need some insight on the example sorting, especially in the music folder. Most of them are singers, not songs about Pretty Boys. Wouldn't these be better in Real Life? I know sometimes the choice for boy bands is deliberate, but it's hard to find some context for write-ups like "every boy band ever" or "look at that guitarist, [links picture] yes, that's a guy".

Which brings me to — should it have Real Life examples? It's an attraction trope and beauty trope, and these often get no real life please treatment.

Opinions?

^ At least in regards to the last part, asking if Pretty Boy should be No Real Life Examples, Please!, this thread is where that kind of thing is addressed.

I agree that "this musician is a PB" doesn't really belong in the Music section, though, regardless of the NRLEP outcome.

I'd say that "gads, this musician s cute" is not Pretty Boy. It's as much a character type as an appearance type, and band members generally don't get pushed into character types. Well, it's really a fading trope; the character type was common and could be difficult to avoid being typecast in in the 40's 50's and 60's (even somewhat into the 70's) but it largely gone now except in period pieces. But that's TRS material, and I'll need to do some homework before I bring it there...

Thanks a lot for your feedback. :-)

Ok, I'll post at the real life maintenance thread (I know about that one, I just wanted to bring up my issues with the clean-up of ZCE and it was one of them). Then I'll do what the crowner says. :-)

I'll move the examples from Music to the discussion page. None of them has a good write up and weblinks and pictures are not examples. I'll try to do some googling and add some examples from songs.

@429: That's from a Harry Potter fanfic called The Girl Who Lived, a Gender Flip of the source that delved into nudism so much that it got cut by the P5.

Jamieson Price has all of four tropes, and three of them are ZCEs, with nothing more on the trope pages to expand the entries.

Anyone familiar enough with his work (I'm not) to fill in the blanks, or is it bound to be cut for failing Rule of Three for trope examples?

Lots of creator pages don't have example lists at all, so we're not gonna cut the page for not having three real tropes. I'll comment them out.

I'm still working on Pretty Boy and also Spoiled Sweet.

However, I noticed Fractured Fairy Tale has quite a few ZCE, plus some of the worst phrases like "this trope incarnate" (I already killed it during my small edit removing misuse and natter), "nuff said" or "that is all".

I'll get to the page. That is, if nobody grabs it first.

Plus there are some weird write-ups like "it doesn't resemble a fairy tale, but it feels like one in a way that's difficult to explain" — I think this should be commented out as well, shouldn't it?

I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring up the issue, but Rogues Gallery has a problem where each example is simply a long list of chained sinkholes. This leaves precious little context for someone not familiar with the work the list belongs to; I started on the Batman example, but then realised that the formatting is used throughout the entire page, and that it's too much to clean up by myself.

The way I tried to fix this was by removing the potholes for each listed name and then adding a note giving a terse description of the character instead. Does this solution look good to the rest of you, or is it one of those pages where a quirk that is otherwise not tolerated elsewhere is allowed?

This happened because Tim had made a mistake.

I'll just comment that I had no idea this project was going on and was confused as hell over the %% I saw being spammed on one page. Checking the history didn't lead any edit reasons and it wasn't until I manually reverted the changes that I realized the reason why the edit was made and found this project.

I'll admit I'm a little skeptical of the benefit of approaching the problem this way, cause if tropers don't physically see the trope on the page they're less likely to elaborate via an edit session. I don't disapprove of the reasons, but at least make sure to refer to this project to avoid confusion.

[up] Interesting to call it spamming. May I ask what page do you refer to? I always leave an edit reason and there should always be a note at the tope of the article, similar to that one in the header of this thread.

I think this project is a good way of dealing with the problem because when people see Zero Context Examples on the wiki everywhere, then they think it's kosher to add them. Especially new editors.

If they don't see the example on the page, they usually want to add it because they want their favourite work to be visible on the page.
