Just yet another added thread to the mythos that will never be fully explained, and purposefully left open to interpretation so what's left of GAINAX can watch fanboys fight about it while they stuff their pockets with money.

The manga has been a separate continuity from the anime since forever ago. Just because Mari exists in the manga continuity alongside Rebuild continuity doesn't mean shit to original series continuity.

At the risk of sounding like a dick, I just find /a/'s reaction to this hilarious. They're also floating the rumor that Sadamoto and Anno are using this to set up for 3.0 + 1.0.

... That snapshot is from Sadamoto's manga? Can someone give me a summary of the information, given that I don't understand the Spanish text nor do I have the will to comb through the thread's morass of 4chan-typical drivel to pick out the few useful bits or the available pics themselves?

There's a rough translation of the manga caps here.

The rough summary is when Yui and Gendo were at University one of their fellow students was a 16 year old prodigy with an unrequited crush on Yui... named Mari Makinami. She transferred overseas, but before she left Yui gave her her glasses and styled her hair into twin pigtails.

... Wait, so manga!Yui has bad eyesight? How come this has never been hinted at before? None of the manga photos including her ever showed her with glasses, for one.

Marq, glasses are what smart people wear. It's about contractual cliche, not about eyesight.

But creators often make a point of combining that with actual bad eyesight (unless the character in question only wears it occasionally, then it's far from nigh-universal). Look at Mari, for example; Blind Without 'Em when her glasses get knocked off after her Crash-Into Hello with Shinji.

Upon looking at the lyrics, I'm half-convinced that Mana should have this as an image song.

... Come to think of it, amita, something tells me that Mana'd get along well enough with Hime Utsumiya as well...

More like Kyouko said that Yui should switch to contact lenses... and Mari saying that she lost her own in the scuffle for catching the last escaped lab mouse.

You are now envisioning mouse-piloted EVA from mouse-NERV engaged in a desperate campaign to save the geofront's mouse population from the strange and incomprehensible creatures called Exterminators, ending in Mouse-Rei using the mouse-Lance of Longius to kill the Dread Gendo.

Because of metaphysical biology experiments on mice, and the mice that got away.

What do you guys think, if Shinji were a Gadgeteer Genius, would it be in-character for him to put together something like this as a child?

If it's something that can be built by real-life science/technology/engineering, then it's a moot point to ask whether a Gadgeteer Genius can build it. And given that he canonically has Elegant Classical Musician inclinations... Well, the answer should be obvious.

On a different note, if the EVA cast (including extracanonical characters) were born in the Digimon World universe, what Digimon teams would you assign to them as the best fitting for their characters?

My own take on it:

  • Shinji: mix of angel and demon themes. If Mayumi's the Angewomon/Ophanimon, then Shinji's the Angemon/HolyAngemon.
  • Rei: water/ice-elementals, at the very least. Probably angel-themed.
  • Asuka: fire-elemental and dragon types, with a dash of Knight in Shining Armor types too, all of the Vaccine category. I envision either Omegamon/Omnimon or Imperialdramon as the star of her team.
  • Mana: Not quite sure, actually.
  • Mayumi: angel-themed, definitely. I envision Angewomon/Ophanimon as her "leader" Digimon.
  • Mari: probably beast-themed, with a focus on those whose lore implies Blood Knight or Ax-Crazy tendencies.
  • Misato: Mix of military-themed and alcohol-themed types.
  • Ritsuko: machine and technology-related types.
  • Gendou: lots of darkness-oriented and demon types. Almost definitely has Vamdemon as the team leader.

Mana could fit the Angels group and have Cherubimon.

I think Yui, who's interpreted to be the mastermind behind almost everything in EVA, might have a Digimon that trumps Gendo's Digimon, like a Dark Master or even Apocalymon.

You potholed to the first game, so that's what I'm going to run with, even though your talk about "teams" would be more in line with World 2 or World 3. Also, each Digimon World game is unrelated to any of the others. One partner, digivolution stops at Perfect/Ultimate before reincarnating as a digitama, and depending on growth/stats/other conditions Agumon has six possible Champion Digivolutions, etc. So I will think along the lines of their optimal partner, either Champion or Ultimate.

  • Shinji: if you play up his Butt-Monkey status and/or ineptitude, he gets Numemon. If he can manage to move past that, then I'm going to say Leomon or Ogremon. I don't think Shinji would be a good enough Tamer to really get an Ultimate partner, but I know from experience that you can make the Final Boss look like a chump with a sufficiently powerful Champion Digimon and the right moveset (really fast Devimon using Arm Charge + Megalo Spark FTW).
  • Rei: In the context of DGW 1, her optimal Ultimate Digimon would almost undoubtedly be Andromon. Unless you want to go the "Badass Adorable from rather squicky origins" route, in which case her Ultimate is Monzaemon (which can only be gotten via Digivolve item or digivolving from Numemon). If you're splitting the difference between Robot and Moe, you can probably split the difference and give her Mamemon.
  • Asuka: Hot-headed, headstrong, badass. She easily goes with the Greymon archetype, though it's an open bet whether her partner would digivolve into Metal Greymon or Skull Greymon (remember, Digimon World doesn't operate by the anime rules, and Skull Greymon requires higher stats to get than Metal Greymon).
  • Mana: Biyomon -> Birdramon -> Phoenixmon
  • Mayumi: Patamon -> Angemon. IDK if Magna Angemon exists in DGW 1. I want to say I've gotten him at least once, but damn if I know if that really happened or if it was All Just a Dream.
  • Mari: GIROMON, FULL STOP.
  • Misato: Nanimon is a "junk Champion", but he's also heavily associated with alcohol, and of the "junk Champions" is said to suck less than the others. IIRC his Ultimate in DGW 1 is Etemon.
  • Ritsuko: Another good candidate for Andromon as her Ultimate form partner.
  • Gendo: Devimon -> Megadramon
  • Yui: Machinedramon.

I honestly thought the pothole was to the whole Digimon World series. For the record, I am only familiar with the third game, and even then I only played far enough to open 2-3 dungeons before the game's CD broke down on me (or was it the PS2 itself?).

And I vote to have Andromon/HiAndromon be Rei's partner. If any of the EVA kids is qualified to be the epitome of Badass Determinator, it's Rei. Sorry, Shinji, but you come a close second to her.

There isn't really a page for the World franchise as a whole, because unlike the Pokemon games that are Strictly Formula, each World game is very different from the others.

World 1 (the article that you linked to) is based more on the Virtual Pet than anything else, hence some Early Installment Wierdness compared to the Digimon meta-franchise as a whole. It is a mon-raising RPG adventure game. It was also, alongside Ape Escape and some demo discs that came out of a Pizza Hut promotion for their "The New Yorker" pizza back in the 90's (which included Crash Team Racing, Final Fantasy VIII, and the aforementioned Ape Escape), one of my first video games ever, and I've always loved the shit out of World 1. Even though it took me 14 years to ever beat it, and that was by help of emulation tools.

Digimon World 2 isn't one I'm very familiar with, but it is more of a Dungeon Crawler/Roguelike, and introduced DNA Digivolving and having a Team of 'mons instead of just one. I'm told it has a shitload of grinding involved.

Digimon World 3 (or 2003 in Europe and PAL territories due to World 2 not getting exported to those places, and the game that you were referring to) is just a straight-up JRPG. Admittedly, it is also very fun, though certain things (like recruiting Veemon) can be a real pain in the ass. That said, I'm not as familiar with World 3's Digivolution mechanics and what all possible team combinations are viable in it, so that's why I didn't do a listing for World 3. Although Mari would totally have Beelzemon, and Ritsuko's team should include Lady Devimon.

And I don't know anything at all about Digimon World 4, because I've never had it in my posession to play it and none of my computers (except maybe my dad's desktop) are ballsy enough to try and emulate the PS 2.

... Wait, now that I dug up a bit more on the series, it's the second installment that I played.

Bah, whatever. Just ignore the whole series and focus on the basic idea of "each character has a team of Digimon, a la Pokémon".
