That's because I messed up. The Evas aren't Powered Armor in there but Haunted Technology Humongous Mecha. The nanomatrix is what gives them an AT-field and is part of SEELE's Assimilation Plot.

It was the idea with the aerocruisers.

Anyway, what I just said wouldn't take place in the concept's universe but in the canon one.

Third and thirdmost, how the hell would the JSSDF get their hands on Angelic matter? Of Iruel, no less, which IIRC only ever manifested within NERV central?

Fourth and fourthmost, the EVAs are ALREADY Haunted Technology Humongous Mecha.

A JSSDF spy other than Kaji gets a dead sample of Iruel during the cleanup and passes it on to his superiors. With one stroke, the JSSDF solves both the inertial dampening problem and the Jet Alones' & Tridents' inability to pierce an AT-field.

What I meant above is that the Evas are actually mechas, not cyborgs wearing mecha armor. They are just as mechanical as the aerocruiser that ferries them around the world; it's the nanomatrix that gives them the "haunted" quality.

Hrm...

In any case, I need to get off of here and head home for the night. Watch the new episode of Kamen Rider Drive.

Of course, using an Iruel-based phlebotinum without knowing a single thing about Angels bites the JSSDF in the ass hard, when the Tridents become Haunted Technology and do stuff like the ejection seat suddenly refusing to work when it's needed. Or when Bardiel uses the phlebotinum as a medium for spreading to one of the Tridents.

Essentially, the same thing happens to the phlebotinum as what happens to the Noveria rachni: in the absence of mental companionship when created, it becomes omnicidally insane. Even Kaworu is slightly repulsed by it.

By the way, did you recognize Girlfriend of Steel's ED song?

So I got a preliminary list of potential monster-folk race choices for the EVA cast.

  • Shinji: werewolf, witchnote
  • Rei: angel, vampire, ghost, succubus, yuki-onna, artificial construct-type races (golems, dolls, Frankenstein-style monsters, etc).
  • Asuka: centaur, werewolf, vampire, dragon-type races.[[note]]I picked these races on their likeliness to be prideful in general, thereby accounting for that particular trait of Asuka's personality.
  • Mayumi: siren, mermaid, scyllanote .
  • Mari: cat-type racesnote , bakegitsune, succubus.
  • Kaworu: angel, incubus, vampire.
  • Misato: bakegitsune.note
  • Mana, Toji, Kensuke, Hikari, Ritsuko, and many others are unknown at the moment.

No, but it WAS pleasant to listen to.

[up]Any context there, cowboy?

  • Shinji's monster race should be "Belmont".
  • Asuka I can see as a vampire.
  • Rei should be a Frankenstein.
  • Mari is a Kaiju and you know it.
  • Kaworu is probably viable as an incubus.
  • assorted: what the hell is a bakegitsune?

... I asked several pages ago about assigning potential Cute Monster Girl species to EVA characters. All I did now was extend the concept to male characters; I just lack a good gender-neutral name aside from "monster-folk".

Mari is a Kaiju and you know it.
We're talking the Cute Monster Girl kind of monsters here.

assorted: what the hell is a bakegitsune?
Bakegitsune is more or less the technical term for the Japanese version of Fantastic Foxes, though as Japanese culture considers all foxes to be supernatural (with the "younger" ones simply seeming mundane because they're inexperienced), they're more commonly called just kitsune.

EDIT: Huh. Apparently, someone already thought of turning the EVA setting into a monster-girl/boy AU.

Skimmed the first few chapters to see what species were assigned. Rei is a birdgirl with clawed hands (revealed in the very beginning of Chapter 1), Mari is a lamia, and Asuka is a... slime girl. [lol]

No, but it WAS pleasant to listen to.

When I first watched the ending, I immediately went "wait a sec, I know that tune from somewhere!". And sure I did: it's the very first track on the second Eva OST.

I never heard this anywhere else in the franchise. Granted, I haven't watched Death and Rebirth.

Some commenters say that this is probably the closest thing to a theme song for Mana, despite the OST having came out two years before the VN.

I suppose Rei could be a ghost possessing a life-sized doll. Then Asuka calling her one would be doubly an insult because it'd be like saying she doesn't add anything to the shell she's inhabiting.

And who the hell says Kaiju can't be adorable?

[[quoteblock]they're more commonly called just kitsune. [[/quoteblock]] Okay then. You should just use that term from now on.

@amita: Huh. I don't recall hearing it anywhere else in the franchise either.

Okay then. You should just use that term from now on.
What's so confusing about adding bake-? Cat demons in Japanese mythology are bakeneko; monsters, shapeshifting spirits, and other similarly supernatural creatures of Japanese mythology are generally called obake or bakemono (among other alternative terms). Heck, even the famous nine-tailed fox Kurama from Naruto is referred to by the term bakegitsune several times, no doubt because there is a difference between normal foxes and supernatural foxes in-universe.

Unit 01, the oneshot I mentioned is almost ready to post. Meanwhile, I had another idea today; I mentioned that in 2nd Impression, Shinji, Toji and Kensuke have a band they can ask either Asuka or Mayumi to sing for, right?

How about a Slice of Life fic about this band, involving the entire teenage cast? Aside from the above three, they also recruit Asuka as violinist and Kaworu as pianist. Do you have an idea how Mana can contribute? I mean, they already have a singer in Mayumi; maybe Mana joins as another singer for duets?

For some reason all I can picture her playing is a bass guitar. I feel like that may be slightly influenced by her Nobody Dies characterization though.

What. What the hell do you mean, Mothra isn't adorable?! I don't know what, son, but something is fundamentally wrong with your damn brain!

"Mothra isn't adorable", he says. <continues grumbling incoherentl->

Unless Moe Anthropomorphism is involved, that is.
TO FUCKING HELL WITH MOE ANTHROPOMORPHISM!!!!

What's so confusing about adding bake-?
Kitsune is a familiar, and as you yourself noted, commonly-used term. The only other term I can recall ever hearing used to refer to a spiritual fox, is "yoko", from Kurama expositing on himself in the official release of the Yu Yu Hakusho manga. Bakegitsune, however, I have never heard/seen except for your using it just now. Now that you've explained the term, this is all quite the moot point, but you might have defined it in a note earlier and we could have avoided all this.

And I've never heard the Kyuubi referred to by that term either. But then, I only ever watch the dub (which IIRC has it as Nine-Tailed Demon Fox), and I dropped that series like a hot potato after the timeskip.

Now, bakemono is a term I'm familiar enough with, and is the one I almost always see when characters are freaking out and referring to monsters. Seen it in Kamen Rider, unfortunately have seen it in Tekkaman Blade with desert shepard people referring to poor Rapier....

Also, another thing. You had Asuka and Mari as Horny Devils in potentia, but not Misato, the original (GOLDEN!) Ms. Fanservice of the franchise?!

__________

@Amita:re:band:I dunno what Mana might be good at, honestly. I guess I can see her as a supporting guitarist, perhaps?

ALSO. IN EITHER A FEW HOURS, OR SOMETIME TOMORROW, IT IS ON.

According to the Nobody Dies article, the story didn't end; it's just on hiatus, or to put it in the author's own words, "hibernating".

... What's wrong with Moe Anthropomorphism? They give you such wonderful things as Kantai Collection.

Also, another thing. You had Asuka and Mari as Horny Devils in potentia, but not Misato, the original (GOLDEN!) Ms. Fanservice of the franchise?!
That's because Misato doesn't come across as sufficiently sex-obsessed (or with the right potential for such obsession), fanon perceptions aside. She'd work better as a heavily-drinking fox-girl, since not only does she fit the Cunning Like a Fox archetype, fox spirits in Japanese mythology disguising themselves as beautiful women are a common subject of Shapeshifting Lover stories.

And according to Gregg's own words, "Nobody Dies needs to die in a FUCKING FIRE". Plus, he's doing a rewrite so it's likely he doesn't intend to continue it.

And yet the "ND is in hibernation" line was added to the TVT article in August 2013, well over a year after Gregg started writing the Rebuild of ND in January 2012 on Spacebattles. Something is amiss here.

... And strangely enough, I can't seem to find any trace of the original statement via Google.

There is more to being "adorable" than just aesthetics! It's an aspect of characterization, as well! Of atmosphere!

I'm sick and tired of seeing it everywhere.

Prelude of Steel - Rounding the 'bout

In Tokyo-3, it's late into the evening. The sun has long since fallen below the horizon, and the stars of the night sky cannot be seen for the city's light pollution. The air is uncomfortably humid, as always, and much of the day's heat still lingers in the concrete jungle.

It is a night like any other, and for the moment, the city knows some measure of peace.

Within one particular apartment, a young lady is taking a shower, while her male roommate quietly listens to his music player in his room. The adult responsible for the two is still at NERV, spending yet another night on her backlog of paperwork. The warm-water penguin sleeps in its freezer.

The sound of an explosion booms throughout the city, followed by the sound of VTOL aircraft flying by.

The occupants of the apartment start, and Asuka rushes out onto the balcony to learn the cause of the disturbance.

Further into the city, the sky is lit with a sinister red glow.

The earth shakes once, twice, many times, always at a set interval. A black form is outlined against the angry crimson haze, distinct from the buildings. Tokyo-3 is playing host to a monster, as it has before, and as it will again.

"Why?!" Asuka demanded. "Why don't they made an emergency state announcement?! This country is so slow! And what about the enemy, is it a new Angel?!

Asuka, in the back of her mind, is truly concerned that there doesn't seem to be any kind of evacuation effort going on. But if one were to ask her up-front, the bulk of her impatience stems from the fact that NERV hasn't contacted her yet. She, a warrior, hasn't been called to the field. She wants to put the mysterious challenger in its place, with her own monster and her own mastery over it.

"Dammit," she rants, "where have Shinji and Misato gone to now?"

From behind her, a timid male voice voice says, "I'm right here."

Asuka stiffens, her once-seething blood now cold as ice.

"Um... sorry. But you could've, y'know, taken a towel with you."

Asuka screams something in German, and kicks Shinji in the face, sending the boy reeling back into the apartment.

______________

The next morning, the three Evangelion pilots had been walking to school together. At some point, Shinji and Asuka were met by their other comrade, Rei.

The boy pleaded, "Asuka, cut it out. You'll get in trouble with the police if you stay in there."

Asuka, from within a modest-sized crater surrounded by yellow caution tape, scoffed at him. "As if, Third Child. Even with so much obvious evidence, they're calling it a 'mysterious moving object'."

Shinji, not really seeing what difference it made, said, "If we don't get moving, we're going to be late..."

Rei silently turned and left on her own, echoing a similar sentiment.

Asuka stood there a moment as her comrades started to leave her behind, before her brain suddenly appeared to reboot. "N-now wait just a damn minute! HEY! I'm telling you guys to wait up!"

As the trio walked, they eventually started talking. Some point after tricking Shinji into carrying everyone's bags via rock-paper-scissors, Asuka said, "You know, I heard there's going to be a transfer student coming in. Must be a total weirdo, voluntarily coming to a dangerous place like this."

Shinji tried to curb Asuka's assuming nature. "It could be that they didn't want to come here, but had to anyway."

Asuka scoffed. "Really, Third? Projecting your own issues on someone you haven't even met yet? I can tell you're just scared out of your wits. After all, it's not like you're good at making friends."

Shinji wanted to say that he wasn't "scared out of his wits", but knew that Asuka would take his defensiveness as an admission of guilt.

Around that time, they passed the threshold into the school building. Not spending more time around the moldy-smelling shoe lockers than they had to, the trio quickly made their way to class.
