Just thought I'd bring this up. The title is Japanese (and Greek) despite it being nowhere near unique to Japanese culture, it's a pun on another trope name (and similar enough to that one to cause confusion), and one of the redirects is incorrect Latin.

I figured it was probably originally a joke page, but if it's a real trope (which, it has examples and seems to be as legitimate as Canis Major), it needs a better name. If we leave it as a joke page for a typo like Chekovs Gun, that needs to be made clear and the wicks need to be cleaned up.

This is the best trope name. OK, maybe after Wave of Babies. Maybe.

It was my understanding that this was a joke page, but it does look like this is no longer the case.

It actually got more examples, wicks and inbounds then Canis Major. ^^; I wonder how much of the two laters are meant for Meganekko.

But, yeah, I support this. Damn awful name. Even ignoring the utter bulshit this name is by itself, it practically just invites misuses with the (much more common) other trope.

It's already got some good redirects that are probably helping it out, and the description's pretty clear. I think it could be okay with this name and those alt-titles.

What I'd be worried about is if this is actually being misused as a misspelling of Meganekko, like Chekovs Gun. I'd like to see a wick check.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

Maybe, technically you are right, but this is actually one of my favorite TV Tropes terms. I know that isn't a good argument, but still...sad

I'd be fine keeping the title as a pointing one towards the correct article, a la Chekovs Gun, but having a legit trope on a joke page for a misspelling of another trope just seems needlessly confusing.

I just checked all the punctuated titles using it, and 100% were correct. That's 6 out of 6.

edit: p.s. completely off-topic, but I am terrified by the fact that Wave of Babies has a Troper Tales section! [lol]

Woohoo! Finally, someone else objects to this thing!

Unlike Chekovs Gun, this is a legitimate trope, and that trope should not be on a joke/Just for Fun page. Frankly, I don't like the idea of pages like this at all - the recent maassive wick cleanup on Chekovs Gun shows that if common mispellings are given their own page, there will be misuse. So I'd really like to cut this altogether. Whether we do or don't, though, the actual "Giant Cat" trope should get a better name.

I agree fully these misspellings shouldn't ever be made its own pages. It is for this reason we usually don't allow redirects for common mistypes, people will commit a mistake and not fix them, since the link appear in blue.

Still, we can't cut these pages, unfortunately. There is over a thousand of inbounds each, so cutting the pages would be rude to the people who use these links.

My solution would make it appear in red, like This Troper. Then even Mega Neko could be a redirect to the proper trope, as long as the specific spelling 'Mega Neko' appear in red always.

I checked three of the incoming wicks(it's late) and Couldn't Find a Pen and AnimeAndManga were both correct; A-Cup Angst may be. I think we have a case where the confusing title is saved by the visibility of both tropes, causing far more editors to keep an eye out for mixups(Chekovs Gun is really a worst-case scenario - how many people knew Chekov was packing heat before discovering that page?). If we do have a change, we should probably go with the corrected version of Magnum Felix(which should probably be a redirect even if we don't).

EDIT: And why did I forget "Chekov" had but one 'h'?

[up] I suspect that for more than a few of those confused wicks it was not so much misuse, as when those other tropes were created the people that launched them didn't bother to take examples out of the pre-existing trope and put them in the new more specific one. A very common occurrence with any trope over a year old. Incidentally Panthera Awesome is a godawful name.

This name is a Guilty Pleasure for me. I love it for its sheer chutzpah. Still, by all criteria (other than possibly misuse?) it should be changed. It's a valid trope, not a Just for Fun page.

So if we replace the name, can it be Big Damn Kitties? grin

Just kidding...

Giant Cat would be the most literal translation, and if we must change the name we should change it to that. However, it would also be a boring name, and I'm not convinced the current name has been misused.

Any confusion between this and Cat People will not be fixed by making the name even more clearly cat related. Same with confusion with the Pantera Awesome.

I don't have time for a formal study, but the informal random sampling had clearly cat related meanings for all the uses.

As for the the "Not a Just for Fun..."

Yeah, because this is Serious Business, and how dare anyone have a bit of fun...

PS: For the record, "Mega" is an English word, even if its origins are Greek.

[up]The reason I brought up Just for Fun is that some people have postulated that it was originally a joke page, and so could have a silly name (see Chekovs Gun). However, it's (at least now) a valid trope page, so the Just for Fun defence doesn't work.

And why would people think it's about cat people? A bigger problem is that "neko" is a Japanese word that isn't going to be transparent to non-Japanese speakers unless they already know what it means. However, once you know what it means, the meaning of "big cat" is clear.

If we want a rename, Colossol Cat or Colossol Kitty would work. Or maybe even its redirect, Really Big Cat.

Colossal Cat has a good ring to it. Mega Cat would have the advantage that we don't have to worry about messing up alphabetization, and it is easy to recognize as being related to the old name, which would reduce any confusion renaming would cause.
