Token Good Teammate / Western Animation

Go To

Token Good Teammates in Western Animation.
  • Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Frylock is the only member of the team (and, really, the only character) with a semi-functioning moral compass, as well as the only one who isn't totally incompetent at fighting the villains, though he's been known to have his moments of extreme depravity that shock even Shake.
  • Courtney from As Told by Ginger is the nice one out of the 'popular girls'. She's a pampered rich girl who actively tries to befriend Ginger, though Miranda doesn't support their friendship.
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: Zuko's Uncle Iroh in the first season; he's a former Fire Nation general who had a pre-series Heel–Face Turn and only helps his nephew hunt the Avatar so he can look after him. It turns out he was the only general who had a heart, and it began to cost him heavily.
    • The Legend of Korra: Bolin is part of Kuvira's army in the fourth season. Deconstructed in how many lies Kuvira has to tell to keep him a willing part of the team; once he realizes the truth, he defects with Varrick and the two of them escape to Republic city to warn President Raiko and Korra about her spirit vine weapon experiments, but what they didn't know was she was using them to create the Colossus to take over Republic City.
  • Wonder Man is this for the Masters of Evil in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. While the rest of the team are genuinely evil across the board, Simon Williams is a guy with genuine grievances and a desire for vengeance who's fallen in with the Masters because they're keeping him alive and their goals line up with his.
  • Beast Wars: Silverbolt when he was awakened as a Predacon for all of one episode. He becomes a Token Evil Teammate after being free of Megatron's control in Beast Machines.
  • In Beavis And Butthead, Mr. Van Driessen is this compared to the rest of the faculty, in contrast to the Token Evil Teammate of Mr. Buzzcut. Van Driessen at least tries to show compassion for the duo, even though it always fails. If anything, he's too nice, considering how troublesome the duo are.
  • Big City Greens:
    • The biker Dan of the Stingers in "Trailer Trouble" is the least mean of the group, as shown when he happily greets Nancy and is often picked on by the others, Skids especially. He also politely apologizes for stealing the trailer when doing so, and compliments on Nancy's family once they make up in the end.
    • In "Bat Girl" after the kids take Nancy's reckless baseball methods too far and end up taking a level in jerkass, while most of them trash-talk, insult, roast and physically attack the other team either way, Tilly just sics a butterfly after one of the players, given her pacifism and serenity.
  • In Castlevania out of the four Vampire Sisters, couple Striga and Morana are this compared Jerkass Woobie Lenore and plain old Jerkass Carmilla. Although they are still Vampires they have better grasp of morality and don’t manipulate others nor do they kill anyone who isn’t attacking them first. They are also the only ones to survive in the ending.
    • Deconstructed with Lenore, she touts herself as being the Token Good Teammate compared to her sisters but she still shows a cruelly manipulative and violent side akin to Carmilla. Like with other vampires, she likely doesn’t fully appreciate the evilness of her actions due to losing most of her humanity long ago. She does take a level in kindness in Season 4, explicitly caring for Hector and wanting to take him to safety.
  • CatDog: Of the Greasers, Lube by himself is not that bad. He just follows along with the others, and is too dumb to know any better.
  • Drawn Together, Xandir and Foxxy Love are the only housemates who (generally) aren't Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonists.
  • Ed, Edd n Eddy:
    • Edd (Double D) is the most moral of the Eds (Ed is also good, but very stupid). In fact, he's the only Ed the other kids treat with anything resembling respect. That said, he deconstructs the entire trope as it's shown repeatedly that it doesn't matter how moral or lawful he is, he still hangs out with Eddy and even worse, enables his scams by being the brains of them (which even Eddy has called him out on a couple of times). Therefore, the kids punish him alongside Ed and Eddy with the few positive interactions he does have with the kids being a bitter reminder of the consequences of enabling the wrong crowd. To an extent, given that the other kids are often jerks as well, he can sometimes be considered the Token Good of the entire cul-de-sac, acting like the Only Sane Man in a Sadist Show. And despite everything, he's a Nice Guy who always tries to make it up to people whenever he crosses a line.
    • Downplayed with May of the Kanker Sisters. While she is as much of a bully as her two sisters, May is the only member of the trio whose feelings for the matching Ed seem genuine, and not mere lust/desire for dominance, as she is reduced to a crying mess at the prospect of Ed not loving her back.
  • Family Guy:
    • Brian and Lois in early seasons, at least before they Took a Level in Jerkass.
    • Meg can be considered this in later episodes, bar occasional Yandere qualities. To an extent the evolution of the show has led "Good" to be defined as "slightly less of a Jerkass".
    • Stewie, of all people, can be seen as this in the later seasons. He has all but given up on his twin quests to kill Lois and take over the world, and now more often than not uses his intellect for selfless and beneficial reasons.
  • The Foxbusters: Todd is this to the fox pack.
  • Futurama:
    • In "Xmas Story", Dr. Zoidberg is specifically the only member of the Planet Express Crew to not be targeted by Robot Santa, who gives him a pogo stick for a present. More than that; he's apparently the only person on Earth who is not on Santa's naughty/target list, meaning that Santa sees Earthlings as My Enemies... and Zoidberg.
    • Speaking of Santa, his holiday friends consist of him, who goes on a murderous rampage every year, Hanukah Zombie, whose Offscreen Villainy has him at least wanted by the police, and Kwanzaabot, who merely tours the world once a year to teach people what Kwanzaa means. He seems genuinely nice and helpful despite being involved with the other two holiday murderers.
    • Old Man from "A Taste of Freedom" and Hutch from the movie Into the Wild Green Yonder are the only members of the Waterfall family who are depicted in a positive light. Old Man Waterfall fights tooth-and-nail to defend Zoidberg's right to eat the Earthican flag despite disagreeing with his actions, while Hutch Waterfall was part of a secret society dedicated to stopping the Dark One. In contrast, the other Waterfalls are either crackpots, extremists, hypocrites, or some combination of the above. Unfortunately, Old Man and Hutch both get killed at the end of their respective episodes, just like the other members.
  • Gargoyles:
    • John Canmore is always arguing against his siblings' single-issue wonk against the Gargoyles. And then the trope is subverted, BIG TIME.
    • Played straight with Dingo. Of the five human members of the Pack, he's literally the Only Sane Man. He's also the only one whose Heel–Face Turn occurs for truly altruistic reasons.
  • The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy: Billy compared to Grim and Mandy at least. This is mostly an Informed Attribute however; see the Designated Hero page for more information. At times he is the most psychotically destructive and dangerous of the three after all...
  • The Hollow: Skeet seems the most hesitant about plotting against the other team, and he seems to genuinely like Kai. Of course, he's not that much less belligerent than his fellows.
  • Inside Job (2021) has Reagan, a rare example where the Token Good Teammate is the team leader, as she wants to turn The Conspiracy she's part of into a Benevolent Conspiracy, of course, that's easier said than done...
    • Brett Hand is probably a more straight example as Reagan is still very much morally ambiguos and willing to do very morally questionable actions while Brett is outright naive and the classical Nice Guy.
  • Jem:
    • Stormer of The Misfits. As an example, when The Misfits discovered that the Holograms had to perform in a movie alongside them, in order to raise money for an operation one of the Starlight Girls desperately needed, the band is thinking up ways they can screw with Jem. However, the first words out of Stormer's mouth when she finds out is "Which little girl?"
    • Roxy is implied to be nicer than she gives off. In "Roxy Rumbles" she is noticeably less aggressive and sensitive when not around Pizzazz. When around Pizzazz, and especially Jetta, she's anything but nice though. This may be because of all the Misfits members, she is closest to Stormer, who also knows the most about her.
  • Jimmy Two-Shoes himself. He's a Nice Guy Pollyanna who loves having fun and making people happy, while his two best friends are Heloise, a sadistic Mad Scientist (even worse, she was originally meant to be a serial killer) who enjoys torturing people and destroying things but has a secret crush on him, and Beezy, the Big Bad's son who's a lazy and gluttonous demon primarily motivated by his own selfish, hedonistic desires.
  • League of Super Evil: Red Menace, despite his name, is a Minion with an F in Evil who is almost always the one to suggest the "good" solution to a problem the League faces, much to Voltar and Frogg's chagrin.
  • In The Long Long Holiday, Otto is this to the other German soldiers; he even hides evidence that Gaston knows where the British pilot that they're looking for is. He's also in a Secret Relationship with Jeanne, and chooses to protect her family from the other Germans.
  • Making Fiends: Charlotte is the only perpetually nice character in the gloomy and terrifying town of Clamburg, amongst Enfant Terrible Vendetta and the unhappy townsfolk.
  • Charles Foster Offdensen in Metalocalypse is a fairly downplayed example, in that he's far from a good person on his own merits (somewhere between a Nominal Hero and a Noble Demon, with a whole mess of Kick the Dog moments under his belt). However, relative to the members of Dethklok whom he manages, he has a far better-developed sense of morality and consequences, and actual traces of emotional intelligence. As a result, he spends most of his time running damage control for whatever insane stunt they've thrown themselves into that week, or trying futilely to explain to Dethklok why, say, directly causing the governor of Florida to be lynched is something they should feel bad about. One episode even sees him avert a world war, with his stated motivation being that the war breaking out "will hurt record sales."
  • Miraculous Ladybug: The Gorilla (Adrien's bodyguard) is this for the adults of the Agreste household. Gabriel Agreste, aside from his excursions as Hawk Moth, is an emotionally abusive Control Freak to his son, and Nathalie Sancoeur assist him with both of these endeavors. The Gorilla, on the other hand, has moments of defying Gabriel to give Adrien some happiness, and doesn't seem to know that his boss is secretly a supervillain.
  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic:
    • Thorax and "Kevin" are both peaceful changelings who would prefer to just live their lives rather than invade, conquer, and control. Kevin's not been seen since "Slice of Life" while Thorax did a full Heel–Face Turn going from this to Friendly Neighborhood Vampire to rainbow beetle bug... thing and convinced the entire changeling army to follow him.
    • The clone of Rainbow Dash in "The Mean 6", unlike the other five who are Psycho Rangers through and through, is merely lazy and only follows the group of her own accord, rather than doing anything mean or evil. She's also the only one to not mess with the real Mane Six in any way nor spend an extended time with them, doesn't have any random Kick the Dog moments, and doesn't even take part in the attack on the Tree of Harmony in the end. It actually makes it kind of sad that she's killed off along with the rest of them in the end.
    • Sonata Dusk of the Dazzlings aka the Sirens in My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks is often shown to be the least competent of the trio, coming off as ditzy, easily distracted and misunderstanding over specific things, and even has moments of genuine decency like making punch for everyone or actually enjoying Snips and Snails' god-awful rap, making her seem like a villainous version of Pinkie Pie.
  • Ninjago: When Sensei Yang resurrected several of the ninja's enemies to take their place among the living, he included Morro, who already had his Redemption Equals Death moment and instead warns Master Wu before peacefully returning to the Departed Realm.
  • The Owl House
    • Raine is this to the Coven Leaders, standing against Emperor Belos' plots and acting as a key member of La Résistance on the side. They're later joined by Darius and Eberwolf, who had their doubts but were too afraid to voice them before discovering Raine's antics.
    • Steve is one to the rest of the Coven Guards; in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen", he attends Lilith's party despite her being allied with known criminals, and in "Any Sport in a Storm", he has a surprisingly reasonable reaction to Skara punching him in the face; By "Oh Titan, Where Art Though," he quits the Guard entirely and has joined the resistance.
    • Deconstructed with the Golden Guard. Hunter is a decent person who does genuinely want to help; it's just that a lifetime of systematic, calculated abuse has placed him firmly on Belos's side. Most of Hunter's evil actions are done out of a desire to help or please Belos, and even when his conscience starts getting in the way of his missions, he fails to see anything wrong with the Emperor's Coven and how they operate. Even when he's shown absolute, undeniable proof that Belos is a charlatan and a murderer who lied to him his entire life, he continues to try to explain it away until he overhears Belos himself admitting it.
  • The Patrick Star Show: In "Best Served Cold", Gladys is the only one who doesn't actually have a grudge against the Star family. She thought they were talking about the Easter Bunny, not Bunny Star, and thought it looked like fun so she stayed. She nervously leaves and promises not to speak of it again once she realizes everyone else is getting revenge.
  • The Penguins of Madagascar:
    • Lulu the chimpanzee is probably the only animal living in Hoboken Zoo that isn't evil.
    • When it comes to the Penguins, Skipper, Kowalski and Rico are Heroic Comedic Sociopaths while Private is the most well-intentioned and unambiguously heroic member of the group.
  • The Raggy Dolls could feature Claude as a version of this, in the sense of "Good" meaning "good quality" as none of the titular Raggy Dolls are evil. However, the majority of the dolls all have some kind of flaw that led to them being left in the reject bin; Dotty is covered in paint, Hi-Fi has a stammer, Back-to-Front's head is backwards, etc. In contrast to the flaws of the others, Claude has no actual problems; he was just left behind from a one-off shipment sent to France, and was put in the reject bin because there wasn't anywhere else for him to go.
  • Recess:
    • Miss Grotke is this among the faculty members, though downplayed as they aren't "evil"- they're just doing their jobs and are portrayed as the antagonists for most of the episodes. While most of the faculty are apathetic or extremely stern, she's sweet and easy-going, and always stands up for the kids.
    • Most of the fifth graders are portrayed as either bullies or jerks. Fortunately, you can't say the same for Butch or Johnny V.
  • Rick and Morty:
    • Doofus Rick, a version of Rick from another universe and a member of the "Council of Ricks". Unlike the other Ricks, he is a Kindhearted Simpleton (a simpleton compared to Ricks; compared to regular people he's still a mega-genius) who quickly befriends Jerry and is more than happy to spend the whole day with him.
    • Rookie Rick, another alternate version of Rick who also serves the Citadel as a cop. Of all the Ricks in the show, this Rick is the most ethical as he genuinely cares about the well-being Mortys and isn't a nihilistic hedonist.
    • Sleepy Gary is the only memory parasite to show genuine concern for the Sanchez family, seems to actually truly care for Jerry, and is notably the only parasite to only try and convince Rick that everyone is real rather than accusing anyone else of being a parasite. He even comforts Jerry, who is fearing he may be a parasite, and attempts to escape with him rather than just fleeing alone once the family has learned how to identify the parasites. Naturally, as Jerry is The Chew Toy who everyone treats with disdain, one of the only "people" to actually like him and treat him well would turn out to be a disgusting alien monster who is still using and manipulating him and is killed in the end.
  • Samurai Jack: In one Villain Episode focusing on assassins, only the leader had a noble goal, wanting to kill Jack so Aku would free her kingdom.
  • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power:
    • Scorpia is a Horde officer who's almost worryingly nice and friendly, in contrast to Hordak (a cold, ruthless tyrant who's quick to dispose of low-quality underlings), Shadow Weaver (a vicious, bullying Abusive Parent), and to an extent Catra (who gets worse over time as her jealous streak and complete lack of healthy coping mechanisms come to the fore). Deconstructed in the fourth season, as she concludes that being the good person she believes herself to be and remaining in the Horde are not compatible and just straight-up leaves in order to save Entrapta.
    • Scorpia is later joined by Entrapta, who's definitely a Mad Scientist with very little concern for the consequences of her experiments, but a quirky, friendly one who's kind to others and doesn't really hold grudges, even when it would be pretty understandable. She even manages to touch Hordak's softer side. She's no longer an example as of Season 4, though; after her exile to Beast Island at Catra's hands, she's eventually rescued by Bow and Adora, meaning that she's currently with the Rebellion. This leaves the Horde with no token good teammates at all, particularly with Lonnie's squad deserting, for the brief period it exists before Hordak encounters Horde Prime and it all goes to hell.
  • The Simpsons:
    • Either Marge or Lisa tends to be this to the Simpson family, Depending on the Writer. The episode "At Long Last Leave" acknowledges Marge's status as this in the eyes of the community after Springfield votes to run the family out of town: Mayor Quimby declares that since her genuine sweetness causes everybody else to constantly forgive the actions of the others, she's actually the worst Simpson of them all.
    • One Treehouse of Horror episode has Bart, Milhouse and Nelson vandalizing, stealing and causing general mayhem on Halloween, with Lisa tagging along in tow and doing little-to-no actual crimesnote . Deconstructed later on, when the gang are all punished by the Devil Flanders, including Lisa. Lisa notes that she wasn't as bad as the others, but she still got the same punishment.
  • South Park:
    • Kenny McCormick. At least in the earlier seasons, back when Stan and Kyle were more prone to grab the Jerkass Ball, and came across as not much better than Cartman at times.
    • Butters Stotch, the only child character of the series not to (consistently) fall into Kids Are Cruel territory.
    • Officer Barbrady is the only member of South Park's police force that isn't corrupt or racist.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants:
    • Sandy and Gary in some of the later seasons, since every other character is either a Jerkass, an antagonist, or a moron.
    • SpongeBob plays this role in episodes where Mr. Krabs takes up the Jerkass Ball. Especially shown when he outright calls out his boss for using Plankton's whale phobia against his will to the point of suicide. And when Mr. Krabs laughed Plankton off after learning the irony he never had a regular customer, SpongeBob does not laugh and just stares at him, and would prefer a hasty retreat instead.
  • The Diamonds in Steven Universe are tyrannical dictators who are ruling over a caste system for their subjects to follow, where their main objective is conquering other planets, except for Pink Diamond, who cherishes organic life and created the Rose Quartz persona in an attempt to save the Earth, her own colony, as she realized just how harmful colonizing the Earth is to the planet and how the caste system is detrimental to all of Gemkind. To a lesser extent, Blue Diamond is the nicest of the remaining Diamonds.
  • Starfire from Teen Titans Go! is the nicest Titan. In fact, it wasn't her meanness that got Flanderized, but her naivety, and whenever she does any action, it's not for a selfish reason.
  • Total Drama:
    • All Stars: Gwen was placed on the Villainous Vultures because Duncan cheated on Courtney with her. Later on Cameron joins the team too, in this case for no reason other than because Chris willed it.
    • Pahkitew Island: Between Sammy's elimination and Sky joining the team, Jasmine serves as this as her teammates are villains (and Topher).
  • Pretty much averted in Winx Club, as the Trix, while generally pretty disagreeable to each other, are on pretty much the same page when it comes to being evil. But in the first season, it seemed like Darcy might be this; her romance with Riven is ordered by Icy, but depending on the version or dubbing, she showed hints of being In Love with the Mark. Eventually, nothing comes of it.
    • Mirta/Mysta is the token nice girl at Cloud Tower, where all the other witches introduced hate fairies and want to hurt or prank them even if they're not part of the Trix coven. She eventually realizes she's a fairy, not a witch.
    • Headmistress Griffin, according to Faragonda and herself, was this in her youth, during the first Magix wars: she was in love with Valtor and involved with the Trix coven and the Ancestrals. She eventually left to join the Company of Light.
  • X-Men: Evolution: Colossus is this to Magneto's Acolytes (which calls back a storyline from the original comics).
