Original Generation
Tokino Sora
- いかないで / Please don't go! ExplanationThe moment Sora indicates that she's about to end streaming, expect the chat to spam this, begging her not to leave.
- Soda/Sofa-chan ExplanationCommon misspellings of Sora's name, normally said by overseas fans to playfully tease her. Both gained so much popularity that Sora has an emote for Soda-chan.
- Too Pure for Among Us. ExplanationWhenever she joins an Among Us collaboration, her chat notices right away that she never got the chance to be an Impostor. In fact, she is the only member of her generation who has never gotten an Impostor role yet.
- Jealous of Ankimo ExplanationWhenever Ankimo shows up, everyone tends to fawn over him so much that Sora gets jealous. Fans do this on purpose because they find a jealous Sora to be rather cute.
- Sora is in Smash ExplanationDue to Sora being announced for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the last DLC, and Tokino Sora sharing the same name, many people proceeded to congratulate her for making it in, with fan-art depicting her with the Keyblade.
- "So you're the enemy?"ExplanationWhen Aqua attempted to start a rebellion against Sora in Minecraft to challenge her as hololive's top idol, Sora casually responds with this line, immediately intimidating Aqua into submission. Fans have characterized it as her Pre-Asskicking One-Liner.
- Baby SoraExplanationStems from her being more outgoing and acting more childlike. Even A-chan and AZKi note this.
Sakura Miko
- N-Word Idols ExplanationOne of the first things Miko (and hololive as a whole) is widely known for is her innocently dropping the N-word during her playthrough of Grand Theft Auto V, specifically the cutscene after the first mission where the character Lamar Davis drops one after his rant on Franklin Clinton's appearance. It doesn't help that Rushia, Korone, Subaru, and Shien also did the same thing in their playthroughs.
- Miko's "Elite" English Explanation"Elite" started when 4chan called her this in a sarcastic way during her earliest Grand Theft Auto V streams and she not noticing the sarcasm and running away with it, making it her self-proclaimed "elite gamer" title, but then mutated into an ironic compliment that highlights her questionable in-game decisions. The current usage is for her poor grasp of English.
- Miko is a member of Holo ENExplanationDue to Miko's peculiar articulation of Japanese, this led to many jokes that she wasn't a native Japanese speaker. One particular superchat reading Miko got bullied by her chat with the joke that Miko was a member of Holo EN and ranked her third best among the EN girlsnote at that point Myth was the only EN gen, with people claiming that her English pronounciation was better than her Japanese. This joke would stick around for years
- Miko's JP ranking keeps dropping with each new gen debutExplanationWith each new EN (and ID) gen having more girls fluent in Japanese, fans continue dropping Miko's JP ranking among the EN branch lower and lower
- Mikoboat. ExplanationA short clip of Miko singing along to upbeat background music while sailing a boat in an ARK: Survival Evolved stream. In addition to being spread on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter, it is also a favorite on 4Chan, and achieved some notoriety by being shown on some non-Vtuber Twitch streams.
- FAQ! ExplanationMiko's love of yelling "fuck you" combined with her accent led to this spelling. Which Miko will use herself if she's typing the word.
- Lava ExplanationA lot of mishaps tend to happen when Miko gets her hands on a lava bucket in Minecraft. If she's not accidentally pouring it all over the place and burning half of her house down (twice!), she'd be dropping lava somewhere that would destroy somebody else's stuff instead, or even kill them. In fact, just having Miko being near lava should be enough of a cause for alarm already.
- Radahn Stellar Stellar ExplanationA meme originating from Miko's Elden Ring stream, where after falling victim to Starscourge Radahn's Colony Drop attack, she promptly sang the opening verse of Suisei's "Stellar Stellar" after being told by the chat that it was "Hoshimachi" that killed her. It became popular enough that other members started making reference to it on their own streams as well.
- み俺恥/Mi Ore Haji ExplanationShort for "Mikochi, Ore Hazukashii yo..." or "Miko-chi, I'm so embarrassed for you..." where the fans express their embarrassment after Miko makes a blunder. It was explored by FUWAMOCO in their Japanese stream with the rest of Advent, and made more widespread when, during Holo Expo 2024, a fan cosplays as the stream where she got utterly defeated by Fubuki in Gomoku.
Hoshimachi Suisei
- Always sus ExplanationEver since her epic killing spree in Project Winter, Suisei has found herself at the forefront of suspicion in imposter games, such as in that game or Among Us. Collabs with the latter has her suspected to a far greater degree than anyone else.
- SMS / Suiciopath ExplanationThe former being an acronym meaning "Suisei Maji pSychopath", the latter being the logical fan evolution especially in English. Invented by Towa and used in the same vein as her TMT meme. So given because of her image as a psychopath to both the fans and other VTubers, even though she apparently resolved to shed that reputation. As a certain game she had interested in playing proved, it definitely didn't stick. Not helping matters is her intending to kill 1,000,000 people in-game by her second stream of it.
- Childish "unravel" ExplanationDuring a karaoke stream, Suisei was asked to sing Tokyo Ghoul's "unravel" in a childish voice, but since she didn't know the lyrics, she practically babbled her way into the chorus. While Suisei sang properly in a later karaoke stream, this hilarious moment is often used in the same manner as the original "unravel" meme, which is to play the clip whenever something unfortunate happens to the hololive members.
- "Hi, honey!" ExplanationDuring an English learning stream on Duolingo, one of the program's scenarios had the greeting "Hi, honey!" come up and Suisei said it so strikingly that many fans took to it immediately. Her stream the very next day had some fans forego her usual greeting in favor of this, some went to the other girls' streams to ask them to say it out loud, and it even featured in Coco's meme review with Kanata despite only being two days old by that point. Eventually, it evolved into a Gotta Catch 'Em All scenario where fans were trying to get every single girl in hololive to say it, labelling it the "Hi Honey Virus". It ended up "infecting" more than three quarters of the whole cast. Notable in that the "virus" also ended up spreading outside the scope of hololive and the Japanese VTuber scene in general, to the point that Western VTubers like Veibae of VShojo were inquiring about the phrase's origins.
- すいちゃんは今日も小さい! / "Sui-chan is small today too!" ExplanationA joke that mixes both her catch phrase and her lack of endowment. Whenever there's a collaboration, the idols will usually do volume checks to ensure that the audiences can hear everyone, and volume in Japanese is described as big or small (as in, the same words used to describe physical size) rather than loud or quiet. Hence, whenever the others are checking Suisei's volume, some of the idols and their listeners will throw out this phrase to dig at her A-Cup Angst regardless of her audio quality.
- suipiss Explanation (VERY NSFW)One 4chan user infamously tried to mix a concoction that would emulate... a certain fluid of Suisei's. This was memed on endlessly on this site, as well as hololive shitposting subreddit okbuddyhololive, until Suisei herself said the word "suipiss" after she was hit by a user of that name in slither.io. Therefore... suipiss is canon?
- "Talalala!" ExplanationYet another particularly memorable segment, where Suisei was scat-singing the chorus of the song "Senkou" by the Japanese rock band Alexandros. This became an instant hit among her fans, particularly after the animator Reiruka created a clip of a cartoony Suisei dancing to the tune, and those who discovered the song from the meme have largely agreed that they can't un-hear the scat-singing version anymore. Suisei herself had also discovered the meme, and even gladly provided a "redux" version of the vocals. Becomes an Ascended Meme when scat-singing Suisei becomes available as merch to celebrate her 5th anniversary and birthday.
- MochisuiExplanationIn late 2021, hololive collaborated with Japanese clearance store Don Quijote on a line of limited-edition merch, including "Mochidoll" plushies of every JP talent at the time. Suisei's mochidoll quickly became the most popular one of the bunch and received a reputation as a Memetic Psychopath due to her blank-eyed smile, resulting in second-hand sales of her plush skyrocketing in price once the sales period ended. This meme went through a resurgence in popularity after Miko did a room review where a fan submitted a series of photos that were framed as if Suisei's mochidoll had stabbed him to death.
- SuisexExplanationA pun on Suisei's name used to profess Perverse Sexual Lust towards her. Most common in more degenerate corners of the fandom, including /vt/ and r/okaybuddyhololive.
AZKi
- ¥700 Water ExplanationDuring her first concert, AZKi was selling water on a whim, with the water costing ¥700. Nowadays, whenever AZKi takes a water break during a concert or stream, her chat would spam ¥700. This amount would increase each time she takes a drink, with ¥700 on her first drink, ¥1400 on the second, and so on and so forth. Unsurprisingly, in places where AZKi offers custom icons and stickers such as her YouTube membership and her concerts on SPWN, a glass of water is included among them, with her members spamming these instead whenever she stops for a drink.
- GeoGuessr ExplanationHer insane skill with nearly being able to pinpoint almost location in GeoGuessr with her worst one being only 22 meters off of the right location had fans realizing that she'd never get lost. She even gives Bae a tour of Australia.
Generation 1
Shirakami Fubuki
- Fubuki is an alien cat fox.ExplanationNumerous and frequent cases of viewers mistaking Fubuki for a Cat Girl lead to the fans exaggerating the confusion and compromising by calling her an "alien cat-fox".
The "alien" part in particular likely first originated from a prank pulled by a Chinese viewer during the 2018 Christmas stream, where they tricked Fubuki into saying, "I'm a cat alien," in the Chinese under the pretense of it being "Merry Christmas" in Chinese. For the western audiences, "I'm a cat alien," is instead most known to have been uttered in a popular fan-made video titled "Shirakami Fubuki - I am a cat", which itself uses many elements from the aforementioned stream. - She could be any one of us/Are you Fubuki?ExplanationFubuki would frequently tweet out things from the hololive subreddit that she finds particularly funny. She has also pointed out that she is "always watching", but didn't have an official account, which led to users accusing each other of being Fubuki on a fake account. This started to bleed into jokes relating to Fubuki being a Spy or the Impostor from Among Us. Even after Fubuki made an official account for the subreddit, meaning she could no longer reasonably hide, people joked that it wasn't really her and kept on accusing each other as being Fubuki for a short while after her first post.
- "Glasses are very versatile."ExplanationFubuki went on an infamous rant on the appeal of glasses and stated how she would like to see all of hololive wearing them at some point. It has since been transcribed into a copypasta that is used to comment on fan art on the hololive subreddit whenever someone draws a character with glasses, but it has also been rewritten to refer to hairstyles and other articles of clothing as well. This meme would then become a reality during her third anniversary stream, where Fubuki herself would be wearing glasses.Fubuki: Glasses are really versatile. First, you can have glasses-wearing girls take them off and suddenly become beautiful, or have girls wearing glasses flashing those cute grins, or have girls stealing the protagonist's glasses and putting them on like, "Haha, got your glasses!" That's just way too cute! Also, boys with glasses! I really like when their glasses have that suspicious looking gleam, and it's amazing how it can look really cool or just be a joke. I really like how it can fulfill all those abstract needs. Being able to switch up the styles and colors of glasses based on your mood is a lot of fun too! It's actually so much fun! You have those half rim glasses, or the thick frame glasses, everything! It's like you're enjoying all these kinds of glasses at a buffet. I really want Luna to try some on or Marine to try some on to replace her eyepatch. We really need glasses to become a thing in hololive and start selling them for HoloComi. Don't. You. Think. We. Really. Need. To. Officially. Give. Everyone. Glasses?
- YA BEExplanationA quote from Fubuki's first solo Phasmophobia stream that roughly translates to "Oh no", which became memetic because of her Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises reaction, the noticeable Beat in between, and how she emphasized each syllable. At one moment, Fubuki tried to get a response from the ghost using the spirit box device, leading to the interaction below. Fans ran away with this clip by replacing the ATTACK response with other audio such as Suisei, Matsuri, and even Big Smoke. It's now widely used as a response to bad things happening to the talents on stream and to them doing questionable things.
- "Doko mitendayo?"ExplanationLiterally meaning "Where are you looking?". It spawned from this stream where Fubuki was demonstrating some new emotes and costume options, before adopting an upset facial expression and enlarging her character model to obscure most of the screen. It has since become popular among clippers as a bait-and-switch punchline, where Fubuki would pop up on screen to confront a viewer who is looking at sketchy and NSFW content.
- Fubuki's Seven Page ARIExplanationDuring one party game, Fubuki's expression lit up the moment the minigame turned out to be a Button Mashing contest. She then went absolutely ham on the button(s), going through several different Kiai cries from ATATATATATATA to ORAORAORA and MUDAMUDAMUDA before settling on ARIARIARIARI, topping off with an ARRIVEDERCI! as she handily won the minigame seconds ahead of her opponents. Fans love to joke that she cheated because her friends weren't using their Stands to button mash like she did.
- Scatman FoxExplanationThe thing that first put Fubuki on the map was a YTPMV made of her wherein she sings Scatman John's "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)".
- Akai na...ExplanationFubuki spent a long time shiny hunting Magikarp during her Brilliant Diamond playthrough. Her general response to normal Magikarp was to say "It's red.../Akai na...". Any time Fubuki does something involving Magikarps, this line is brought back up, like when she opened wind up Magikarp toys.
Natsuiro Matsuri
- Matsuri's Perverted SmileExplanationA certain facial expression of Matsuri's◊ consisting of squinting eyes, blushing, and an open-mouthed smile, which when combined with Matsuri's Memetic Molester status has become one of the more common depictions of Matsuri, to the point that it's one of three alternate facial expressions for Matsuri's Nendoroid figure◊. Things would get even spicier when the 3.0 update came and Matsuri's perverted smile got upgraded into a straight up ahegao face (the kind of perverted expression seen in hentai).
- Certified LoliconExplanationMatsuri's interest in lolis, including Gura, has made the fandom declare her a lolicon and vow to keep all small girls far away from Matsuri.
Akai Haato (Haachama)
- Haato is gone; only Haachama remains ExplanationAlthough it originated as a Self-Applied Nickname, Haato's Cloudcuckoolander content from Spring 2020 onward has led to fans interpreting "Haachama" as a separate, more unhinged entity from the original Haato. This has lend some people to say Haato is long gone and was replaced/taken over by "Haachama", especially after her channel got renamed to Haachama Ch. Interestingly, no such perception or interpretation exists in BiliBili: Chinese viewers have always acknowledged that "Haachama" is Haato, and her channel still retains its original name.
- This is Haato/Is this Haato or Haachama ExplanationRelated to the "only Haachama remains" entry above, but instead of Haato being completely gone, this one follows an alternative narrative where Haato is said to be still 'in there' somewhere (in the manner of a repressed Split Personality, or two souls Sharing a Body), and wholesome moments are accordingly interpreted as Haato 'resurfacing'.
As of February 2021, this idea was officially made canon by Haachama herself (see the "Flip Personality" and "Split Personality" entries in Haato Ch. for detail). - What Australia does to people ExplanationDue to Haachama's more bizarre behavior, fans like to joke that her insanity is due to living in Australia. Even bringing up that HowToBasic, which many fans note Haachama's cooking videos are similar to, also lives in Australia.
- [X]-chama ExplanationHaachama's English-speaking fans, as well as Haachama herself in her English streams, will often append "chama" to the end of various English words that describe whatever Haachama is doing on stream i.e. Smartchama, Sleepychama, Latechama, Pogchama etc.
- "Ahh the pepeloni" ExplanationHaachama attempted to explain the way she orders pizza and only left fans even more confused, giving rise to a new copypasta where her entire spiel is quoted wholesale.
Generation 2
Minato Aqua
- Onion ExplanationThe coloration of Aqua's hair had people comparing it to that of an onion, which became a nickname for Aqua
- 44.5 ExplanationThe number stands for Aqua's weight (in kg) when she accidentally leaked her BMI in one of her streams. This number is used by both her fans and fellow hololive members alike to poke fun of her Weight Woe. Later, she would acknowledge the meme again with a celebration stream once she hit 445,000 subscribers (44.5万 in Japanese).
- Sololive ExplanationPrimarily used to represent Aqua's tendency to prefer solo gaming and isn't fond of playing with others. Other members have also been subjected to the "sololive" meme if they log into their Minecraft server when no one else is online.
- IQ 5000/IQ 5.000 ExplanationDespite having the nickname "Baqua", she does have moments she came up with "big brain" ideas which she proudly claims having IQ level of 5000. Although when she becomes "Baqua" as usual, fans declares her IQ drops to 5.
- Wooper/Upah is Aqua/Ateshi ExplanationDue to the Wooper's tendency to always have its mouth open, a habit Aqua is well known for, everyone started considering Woopers encountered in-game to be Aqua and naming her "Ateshi"
- Aqua the RockExplanationAfter Bocchi the Rock! aired, many fans pointed out how similar Aqua and Bocchi were, both of them being pink-haired Shrinking Violets, with even Aqua herself becoming aware of the comparison
Nakiri Ayame
- Nakirium Recharge ExplanationAyame's fans find her so adorable that her streams, and clips thereof, regularly have comments saying how they're reinvigorated by her cuteness and laughter. "Nakirium" is usually spoken of as if it were an essential vitamin or drug that is replenished by watching Ayame. It is often described as a very rare element as a result of Ayame's typically infrequent streaming schedule. Variants and offshoots have popped up for other hololive talent with similar feel-good vibes, such as Botanium or Shiorium.
- Docchi Docchi ♪ ExplanationA MAD born of Ayame's tendency to get lost easily (most notably when she once struggled to find her own house in Minecraft, though this can also overlap with Ayame IRL when meeting up with other members for offline collabs), resulting in a catchy piece of music agreed to be as cute as Ayame herself. Ayame has been teased by other members over it (Matsuri even went as far as to provide a cover of it during a karaoke stream) and later admitted she has a hard time not singing along with the song. A recurring joke, among fans and coworkers alike, is that "Docchi Docchi" might as well become an official song of hers... which actually came to pass when hololive's 「Bouquet」 album included the piano melody as part of its tracklist.
Yuzuki Choco
- Mario Kart Zako Cup/Zako Champion Choco ExplanationA meme poking fun at Choco's curious tendency to consistently finish dead last in Hololive's annual Mario Kart tournaments. As of January 2023, Choco has finished last for four consecutive years with no signs of stopping. Her title of Zako Queen would finally be challenged in January 2024 with Hiodoshi Ao's gloriously zako-rific performance (and only by dint of Choco not participating that year due to reservations regarding her reputation as this), finishing with single digit points in the end.
Oozora Subaru
- "I approb." ExplanationSubaru's response to whether she likes pineapple on pizza. This moment was later animated and the still of Subaru giving the thumbs-up gesture became popular among subreddit memes for expressing "approb"-al. Subaru is aware of this meme and recites it verbatim whenever pineapple pizza comes up, such as during her appearance on Coco's Reddit Meme Review and her appearance Kiara's HoloTalk.
- Feminine Subaru/"Subaru is a girl too, you know..." ExplanationAn infamous incident where Subaru posted a series of uncharacteristic, hilariously cutesy posts to her Twitter account. It was later revealed to be Marine hijacking the account for shits and giggles, but poor Shuba still gets a lot of teasing about it.
- Smartphone Magic ExplanationAfter her initial attempts at creating ASMR Videos went hilariously wrong, Subaru found out that if she's to speak into her phone instead of the mic, then her voice will come out surprisingly soft and feminine instead of sounding like "Donald Duck with throat cancer." She dubbed this phenomenon "Smartphone magic", and now every time she does that soft voice on stream, the chat will be quick to mention this gag.
- Subaru's [insert sausage innuendo] ExplanationDue to her love for the mobile game Sausage Legend, many of her viewers have appeared on-stream as her opponents, usually bearing names laced with sausage innuendos (innuendos that run the gamut between being cheekily subtle to outright calling out the body part they're supposed to be referring to) to get a rise out of her. Subaru being Subaru, takes it with good humor, though she will call out and censor the more embarrassing ones.
- Anatidaephobia/The duck is always watching. ExplanationAccording to The Far Side, Anatidaephobia is the fear that at any point, somewhere in the world, a duck or goose may be watching you. This became an in-joke in the fanbase after Subaru admitted to regularly lurking on Reddit, infiltrating fan servers, watching video clips, and reading the comments, all while incognito in order to be able to see fan reactions and memes without anyone hiding anything. Understandably, this prompted both alarm and excitement from the Subatomos, who have also taken to comparing her to an Impostor.
- Random Subaru ExplanationAnother recurring gag about Subaru (or a duck) randomly appearing on fanmade stuffs like memes and stream clips.
- Subaru's Hips ExplanationIn her 3D appearances, Subaru has a Character Tic wherein she wiggles her hips while standing. Her 3D dances are also noted for her distinct hip shakes. Subaru eventually explained that she does that during 3D lives when she's not in focus to fill the empty space, like most people would with their hands.
- Subaru Sits Down ExplanationWhen Subaru takes a seat in her 3D appearances, the way she sits looks very feminine in contrast to her tomboyish appearance and personality.
- Subaru loves Pop-TartsExplanationIn her first episode of "Tasting of sweets from around the world", Subaru was recommended Pop-Tarts by Calli as being "American taste", and fans quickly noted how, of all the snacks she ate, she seemed to be enamored with the taste of Pop-Tarts the most. This led to fans considering Pop-Tarts to be Subaru's Trademark Favorite Food, including them in fan projects of her that often don't focus on Pop-Tarts otherwise, and some fans went so far as to call Subaru an honorary American.
hololive GAMERS
Inugami Korone
- Yubi Yubi ExplanationKorone's catchphrase whenever she starts her stream, the word "yubi" translates to "finger", referencing how she takes her fans' fingers at the beginning of every stream. Fans found this uncharacteristic dark side to her very endearing, and won't hesitate to make finger related jokes when they have the opportunity.
- X-Potatoes ExplanationComes from Korone's Blasphemous stream, where she attempted to pronounce the name "Expósito" and it came out as "X-Potato". The chat ran away with it, and Korone found it funny, so it frequently pops up whenever Korone attempts to speak English (though the name is actually Spanish)
- "Hey guys!" ExplanationKorone has been working on her English to engage with the overseas audience. Any time she says "Hey guys!" the stream is sure to be filled with English comments. Japanese fans have described it as being a summoning phrase for overseas viewers, a view which both foreigners and Korone have embraced.
- Yes my doggo/As you fish ExplanationIn one of her streams, Korone was trying to teach her Western viewers the meaning of the term "gyoi", which translates roughly into "Yes, my lord" or "As you wish." However, Korone mispronounced "wish" as "fish", causing her Western fans to jokingly spam the chat with fish emotes. They also began dropping the term "yes, my doggo" as a term of endearment. These phrases are common responses to Korone's "Hey guys!" as described.
- From Korone's English-only Super Mario Bros. stream:
- "Have confidence!... No confidence!" ExplanationKorone proclaims her confidence before immediately falling into a pit and dying, a moment that fans had a lot of fun with.
- "Small, small turtle house" ExplanationA favourite moment was when she met the Koopa trapped between two blocks in 8-1, and took the time out to mock it smugly.
- "Water in the fire, WHY?" ExplanationDuring the underwater section of 8-4, Korone (with typically poor grammar) noted the oddity of a fire bar in the water, which is one of the most memorable things she's said in English.
- Eekum Bokum ExplanationKorone's playthrough of Banjo-Kazooie was her first exposure to the game as well as many of the voice lines the characters make; she found the noise for collecting a Mumbo Token particularly entertaining and would call them "Eekum Bokums" as well as imitating the sound for them. A YouTuber then made two animations using Korone's noises as audio, which then became formats of their own for many different fan edits, having either Korone or the Mumbo token saying different things or having conversations.
- Korone tendency to get jumpscared by something thoroughly ridiculous have led to memes on what she is scared of.
- SOAP ExplanationDuring a livestream of the horror game "Infliction", Korone accidentally scares herself with a bar of soap. It has since become a running gag within the Hololive fan community, often making jokes of her being afraid of soap because she Hates Baths. Because, after all, she's a dog and a gamer, of course she does. Even her fellow Hololive Idols join in on the ribbing.
- Another instance had her her getting scared by what can only be described as literally nothing.
- "I'm die. Thank you forever." ExplanationIn a Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes collaboration stream with Calliope Mori, Korone utters this memorable line as she faces her impending doom. The broken English and the way she calmly says this sells the moment. She would utter the meme verbatim in Marine's White Day animation in 2021.
- Why is she angry? ExplanationWhen Korone is intensely focused on a game, her face takes on what appears to be an angry expression, leading to this being spammed in chat. Originating from an Assassin's Creed Valhalla stream where she's just sailing and looks angry for no reason, prompting the quesiton (in English). She realizes it and changes to "Happy Dog".
- "What da faq?" ExplanationKorone's response to the ending of Assassin's Creed: Valhalla was a stunned "What the fuck?" in heavily-accented English, which became a very exploitable reaction used in a number of fan videos.
- Naーhoーneー ExplanationA contraction of the expression "Naruhodo ne" or "I understand". Korone shaved off a few syllables for efficiency and the fans adopted it for themselves.
- Doggo Flip ExplanationMany fans and even her colleagues are impressed with her physical abilities thanks to her pulling a front walkover and two cartwheels in two live concerts.
Generation 3/Fantasy
Usada Pekora
- AH↓ HA↑ HA↓ HA↑ ExplanationThe most known way of writing Pekora's infamous Signature Laugh, complete with pitch-indicating arrows that are often included by Fansubbers. This practice is not only seen on YouTube, but also on different websites such as bilibili and even in other different languages beside English. When Polka laughs herself, she also was given the same treatment.
- PE↗KO↘PE↗KO↘PE↗KO↘PE↗KO↘ ExplanationA bizarre combination of Pekora's Verbal Tic and an Evil Laugh. hololive's bilibili fans had a field day with it, sticking it into meme videos like this one.
- Well well well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions. ExplanationA meme from a separate source, but often tied to Pekora when she often gets her just deserts for being haughty.
- Beautiful Tears ExplanationA clip from a particular stream where Pekora goes on about how she thinks watching girls cry is adorable, complete with her going on a spiel about how she doesn't like all tears, but only "beautiful tears" that come from a specific type of sadness. Fans have taken to referencing parts of this conversation to refer to Pekora's Comedic Sociopathy as well as the irony of her being a constantly teased Butt-Monkey, implying that her chat also shares her tastes.
- "Hey Moona!" ExplanationPekora's usual greeting to Moona in Minecraft. Related to "Moona's English Class" below, despite Pekora's social anxieties, she admits that she is very comfortable practicing her English with Moona in Minecraft. Even with Pekora's spelling and grammar errors, Moona can almost flawlessly interpret and hold lengthy conversations with Pekora, bolstering her confidence.
- pain peko ExplanationA quote from a fake Pekora tweet referencing a similar meme featuring Will Smith. Used by western fans in reaction to Pekora's Asshole Victim and Butt-Monkey moments. Variations of this meme for the other idols are formed by adopting their Verbal Tics such as "pain nanora" for Luna, "pain *hic*" for Amelia, or "pain tako" for Ina'nis. As of February 16 2021, Akai Haato has published a tweet consisting solely of the word "PAIN" in all capitals, which might be a reference to the same meme. Now acknowledged by Pekora!
- "Pardun?" Explanation Pekora attempts to hold an English conversation with Noel, and when Noel responds to her by trolling her, Pekora's only response is to let out a confused "Pardon?" The misspelling is due to Pekora's pronunciation of the word, and is now used whenever she or anyone else does something confusing or mind-boggling.
- ogey rrat Explanation4chan threads enjoy replying with some permutation of what Pekora says here in response to a particularly emotional and/or incomprehensible shitpost. Often accompanied with Pekora's face distorted in one way or another. The meme got new life with the reveal of Baelz Hakos, an actual rodent Vtuber, causing the phrase to be associated with her. "rrat" has also become a shortening of "narrative" (referring to any drama, gossip, controversy, outlandish conspiracy theories and Wild Mass Guessing in general pertaining to the vtubing sphere) and sees use far beyond just the hololive community.
- Pekora is a war criminal ExplanationPekora's habit of designing traps in Minecraft that usually involve Stuff Blowing Up as well as her market manipulation for Villager trading (she would force villagers to breed, then zombify and cure them so they would like her more and give her more materials when trading) has made her reputation among the Western fandom being less of a playful trickster and more of a Machiavellian genius who manages to get away with human rights violations and other atrocities that others would be facing the consequences of. Possibly ascended (and averted) when, on April Fools' Day 2021, Pekora's artist tweeted a new model design featuring Pekora in Institutional Apparel.
- Almond Almond ExplanationThe last part of Pekora's signature greeting, a deliberate mispronunciation of the phrase "domo domo", was mistaken as "almond almond" by her fans, and has been referred to as such ever since. Korone has even extrapolated from the joke, suggesting something like "peanuts peanuts." During her April Fools outfit reveal in 2021, she would be given almonds during her time spent in prison.
- "It's-a-me Pekora!" ExplanationA meme spawning from this stream of Pekora playing Super Mario 64, where she tried to emulate Mario's signature catchphrase at the 7:52 minute mark. Similar to Suisei's "Hi honey!", Pekora's striking delivery of the line made it premium meme material, typically for situations where she is spotted among a crowd of people or a Freeze-Frame Bonus.
- Don't let this meme distract you from the fact that Pekora bought a monkey! ExplanationIn a June 2022 stream, Pekora revealed that she had got a pet Senegalese bushbaby, part of the primate family. Since then, it has become a meme to reference the fact that Pekora bought a "monkey" as a non-sequitur response to particularly lengthy rants about Vtubers, usually on the /vt/ board.
- Pekora guest-starring on her mom's channel ExplanationFor April Fools 2024, Pekomama took over her daughter's channel for one stream, doing a full-on vtuber debut complete with 2DLive model, with Pekora herself nearby and half-audibly cringing at her mom's antics the entire time. This stream managed to get 180,000 live viewers, technically making it one of the biggest vtuber debuts in history; this combined with the fanbase's universal love for Pekomama led to fans demanding that she come back to run the channel full time or insisting that Pekora herself is merely guest-starring on her mom's channel now.
Uruha Rushia
- Boing-Boing ExplanationA phrase Rushia likes to use to rebut against viewers calling her a Pettanko, or to (falsely) assert Big-Breast Pride in an effort to sway others. May also be combined with "Not Pettan!" On the other hand, some fans might use this phrase as a means to poke fun at Rushia's A-Cup Angst in a tongue-in-cheek manner. The term has gained traction on channels other than Rushia's, particularly the hololive EN branch.
- Rushia's Curse ExplanationRelated to above, fans are jokingly Killed Mid-Sentence whenever they tried to mock Rushia's chest. The curse even spreads to the other hololive members when they got Laser-Guided Karma after making fun of Rushia.
- Eva Unit-01 ExplanationWhenever Rushia gets worked up or rages, she lets off impressive screams that make her sound like the Eva-01 in berserk mode. She's even been called that by her peers and fans.
- Death Metal Rushia ExplanationIn the same vein as the above, her screams have also been compared to that of death metal singers and fans have made mixes of Rushia with a few such songs.
- Bruh! ExplanationA meme spawned from Rushia's unusual pronunciation of the phrase after being requested to say it on-stream by a Superchat. It has since become a popular exploitable sound effect for clippers.
Flare Shiranui
- Flare the Babysitter ExplanationIt has been noticed that Flare has a tendency to become the caretaker of whoever she's collabing with, particularly for and by her senpai. This is especially so after she got all of Gen 0 to collaborate together for the first time in Minecraft.
- Wheezing Flare ExplanationThis particularly memorable fanart of her laughing her ass off by kiel_adair became a highly spammable chat meme, even more so as it's perfectly fitting of the subject matter's well-known wheezing laughter. As a result, it has since become the representative image of Flare laughing (or really just anyone laughing in general).
- Sanest Takodachi / "My Ina"ExplanationFlare revealed herself to be a massive fan of Ina and a self-declared Takodachi. Flare is known to frequently call her "my Ina", buying her merch, and going on lengthy gush-rants about how cute she is, which has spawned jokes about how she managed to surpass the already infamously fanatical Takodachis in terms of how much she adores Ina.
Marine Houshou
- Marine's "Idol Step" ExplanationIn a dancing collab with Matsuri, Marine attempted to copy a basic dance move, the "idol step", that Matsuri was practicing, but wound up performing a comically exaggerated version that looked more like an Olympic ice skater. Marine has since adopted this as her signature "dance" move and it's seen as emblematic of her inability to dance.
- Marine-glish ExplanationSimilar to Miko, Marine's pronunciation of English is very mangled, but she has more of an understanding of how the language functions due to having apparently studied it in college years prior. In the first instance of her speaking English, she would only really repeat the phrase "I am a beautiful girl," much to the confusion of those around her. Her written English sometimes gets this because, while much better, it's also Totally Radical to the extreme.
- "I'm horny!" ExplanationMarine's best-known English catchphrase. The phrase was taught to her by Coco in a 3D collab, and since then she has been gleefully using it at every opportunity (while knowing fully well what it means).
- Resident Evil Marine DollExplanationIn the Japanese dub of Resident Evil Village, which is the only version that Cover has perms for, many fans and talents noticed the Japanese voice for Angie, the Demonic Dummy, has a striking resemblance to Marine. This led several girls to call the doll Marine and fans to type "AHOY!" when Angie shows up. Marine herself got in on the joke and tried copying Angie's lines
- The Shower Stream ExplanationAs part of a "punishment game", Marine hosted a stream where she took a shower with Noel while Kanata watched (and a post-graduation Coco was there too). The absolute lewdness of it all ran rampant in the community with memes and jokes about it.
- Marine egg spin ExplanationMarine's cover of the song "Scramble" by Yui Horie became particularly memorable due to her sudden shift to a guttural growl during the chorus. This quickly spawned numerous meme edits of either an egg or Marine herself spinning to the beat, sometimes especially vigorously during the bit where her tone changes.
- RTX MarineExplanationThe MV for Aventure❤️Holic has a scene where, out of nowhere, Marine's model changes into a more realistic one akin to the models in Final Fantasy or Dead or Alive. The abrupt nature of the scene and the model's unintentionally creepy nature quickly spawned memes about it.
- Spider-Man holding Marine's topExplanationDuring the 2024 Shuffle Medley, where different Holomems sing another girl's original song dressed as them, Marine is dressed as Nino'mae Ina'nis this year and sings "Violet." Ina's dress was not made to contained the large breasts Marine has, with Ina joking that a tiny Spider-Man is between Marine's chest doing his Crucified Hero Shot from Spider-Man 2 to keep her top from bursting.
- The age of 30 is in demandExplanationA line quoted from Bae's Newly Friend Game collab with Marine, where this was the pirate's response to being asked what she had learned during her career as a Hololive idol. Becoming an Old Maid used to be one of Marine's greatest insecurities, which she originally tried to hide by claiming to be 17. This got turned on its head in mid-2022 when she actually turned 30 and embraced her status as a mature woman, much to the collective delight of the Ichimi, hence the realization of this within Marine.
Generation 4
Kanata Amane
- Kanagori/50kg Grip Explanation During a group stream of Ring Fit Adventure, Kanata had revealed that her grip strength was 50kg, which is incredibly strong for a woman of her alleged size, and is significantly stronger than the average grip strength of a fit man. Since then, many jokes about Kanata possessing gorilla-like strength have become a staple among discussions involving her, something she has embraced by calling herself Kanagori on a few occasions as well as admitting that she is in fact a gorilla.
- "Everything in this world is too fragile."Explanation Due to her sheer grip strength, Kanata is known to break all kinds of things by accident, ranging from plastic spoons to potatoes, and she's mentioned that she can barely even eat sushi without crushing it. She's said this on more than one occasion, including the aforementioned incident where she crushed a potato while trying to peel it, and comparisons to Superman's "world of cardboard" speech in Justice League Unlimited ran rampant as a result.
- "Everyone is Kanata"ExplanationDue to Kanata's impressive vocal range, there is a wild theory that at some point, every member in the Japanese branch was fired and replaced by Kanata impersonating their voice, or that every member was Kanata all along from the beginning. Funnily enough, most of Kanata's impressions aren't quite spot-on with a lot of times the other girls able to spot her.
- DeepC ExplanationAround the time of Coco's graduation, Kanata had already been using more English on her YouTube and Twitter, leading to fans suspecting that Coco is the one translating these sentences for her, due to the fact that the two still live with one another. The name is a reference to to the popular translation app DeepL.
- Blue Axolotl Explanation Despite having her own breeding farm of axolotls in Minecraft, Kanata didn't manage to get a rare blue one for a long time, which quickly became a sore spot for her. Cue nearly everyone else getting theirs almost instantly and rubbing it in her face, much to the chat's amusement. She finally acquired one after 3,200 tries, though.
Kiryu Coco
- "Good morning, motherf#ckers!" ExplanationWhen asked why her AsaCoco news segment doesn't have an English version, Coco presented an aborted English segment as the reason, which featured her dropping a Cluster F-Bomb that had been heavily censored. Since then, the popularity of this clip has led to Coco adopting "Motherfucker" as a catchphrase, even working it into her arrangement of "Weather Hackers" in the days leading to her graduation.
- When the AsaCoco kicks in ExplanationCoco fans often like to joke that her fictional drug is involved in causing other members' moments of insanity, most often with Watame's Gangimari face (and occasionally with other members).
- The "Ahe Ahe" Challenge ExplanationA Photoshop/3D modeling challenge perpetuated by Coco shortly after her then-latest ban was lifted, where fans were asked to edit the hololive members' faces into an ahegao. Despite management's damage control efforts (they temporarily disabled download links to hololive MMD models on the official site), non-hololive VTubers participated in the challenge anyway. Ironically, Korone and Roboco were the ones who kicked the idea off in the first place.
- Cocorean ExplanationIn unarchived singing streams, Coco will attempt to sing any pop song that she enjoys, including Kpop. She admits to not knowing Korean at all, resulting in her not even attempting to match the syllables to the Korean lyrics or else just saying the one or two words she does know while singing.
- :^) ExplanationUnder normal circumstances, this is a common emoticon for a cheeky smile. In this context, it represents the fanbase in its entirety, especially those who unapologetically use machine-translated Japanese or Japanese/English hybrid terms to irritate Coco in her meme reviews. The depiction (and use of Japanglish) gained popularity after she reviewed a meme using it.
- "Quantum chicken soup grass big chungus?" / 量子チキンスープグラスビックチュングス? ExplanationRelated to the above, a nonsense phrase made to lampoon the machine-translated Japanese that English fans would use as an attempt to communicate, and used exclusively to annoy Coco. After it was first shown, Coco would sometimes mention quantum chicken soup as a way to indicate poorly translated Japanese or as a way to refer to the trolling nature of her viewers in sending her deliberately terrible Japanese messages in her chat; in later meme reviews she classifies them as "chungus memes".
- Adidas Dragon ExplanationCoco's real life wardrobe apparently consists entirely of Adidas clothes. That has generated amusing comments from a lot of people, both in and out of hololive.
- Nose Reveal ExplanationThe nose on Coco's Live2D model is so small and barely outlined that she's more or less treated as The Noseless. Any time she angles herself to show it or she's using her 3D model, fans hype it up as a "nose reveal."
Watame Tsunomaki
- Watame did nothing wrong ExplanationOriginally stemming from an apology video over her poor internet, this phrase has since then become the usual excuse both Watame and her fans use when caught in a mishap, made even more hilarious if Watame follows up with a smug expression.
- Ui-mama is Watame ExplanationMany people jokingly say that Shigure Ui (Subaru's illustrator who is also an independent VTuber herself) is basically Watame in disguise, given how similar their voice and mannerism are. Even Subaru confuses Watame as Ui when she watches Watame's introduction stream. This joke has gotten to the point where Watame and Shigure Ui would disguise themselves as one another in some form during several collabs, with even VTubers outside of hololive taking part.
- Kiwi ExplanationAs Watame trained for the January 11, 2021 hololive Japan Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament, the way she pronounced "kyuu-i" (9th place) sounded like "kiwi". In response, her chat took to spamming the kiwi fruit emote whenever she placed 9th.
- 4chan's Watamelon ExplanationA 4chan user expanded upon the earlier "Watermelon head" meme that Watame had popularised by taking the sheep Pokemon "Wooloo", changing its body from white wool to the colors of a watermelon, and then photoshopping a smug Watame face onto the watermelon colored sheep body. While the original Watamelon meme only lasted a short period in the middle of 2020, this version of Watamelon stayed popular enough on 4chan that threads for new photoshops involving the Watamelon have stayed active ever since. The other fourth gen member versions are the Kanataloupe, Coconut, Blunaberry and Towamato.
- "A common argument by anti-watamelonists is that watamelon is merely "Watame photoshopped to a watermelon". This could not be further from the truth. First, there came Watame photoshopped onto a sheep. Conventional. Unimaginative. Content to stay within known artistic boundaries. Only on this foundation later came the true art: Watame photoshopped onto a sheep... ONTO A MELON. Radical. Innovative. Avant-garde. Will be remembered for years to come." ExplanationA copypasta about the Watamelon meme
Tokoyami Towa
- Towaiting ExplanationA portmanteau of Towa and waiting, often seen commented from English viewers who are anticipating the upcoming streams.
- Big Kusa ExplanationTowa once asked the chat about the difference between lol and lmao with the eventual consensus that 'LMAO=BIG KUSA'. Besides the general spread (including in the chat of other streamers), it's also reached Korone (who asked chat to teach her English internet slang at the end of her Klonoa playthrough) and AkiRose (whom Towa taught Lmao and Big Kusa during their The Watchers collab).
- Oh Mah Gah ExplanationA common Engrish phrase of "Oh My God" which is said enough by Towa that viewers often keep count. One time when told that her viewers are keeping count of her phrasing, she tried to prevent herself from speaking the full phrase, but found herself uttering it shortly after.
- "Towa is an angel / Towa is a devil" acronyms ExplanationDespite ostensibly being a devil, Towa's kind and wholesome personality has lead many fans to declare she's actually an angel, often given acronyms that refer to her as such. Towa has attempted to counter the acronyms with her own that insist she's a devil. Of course, fans who accept the latters acronyms will inevitably twist it into meaning the former.
- TMT ExplanationAn acronym for "Towa Maji Tenshi" which is basically Japanese for the above former line. Coco managed to get Towa to say it during a meme review by chanting TMT at her until she joined in.
- TMA ExplanationTowa's proposed alternate acronym "Towa Maji Akuma", meaning "Towa is devil", in response to the above acronym. Fans claim it stands for "Towa Maji Angel."
- TMD ExplanationTowa previously suggested this acronym for "Towa Maji Devil". Fans turned it into "Towa Maji Daitenshi" or "Towa is Great angel." She managed to slip up on this acronym while trying a freestyle rap.
- TCA ExplanationAnother one Towa proposed which stood for "Towa Chou Akuma" (Towa Super Devil) before fans turned it into "Towa Cute Angel".
- TenQ ExplanationHow Towa pronounces "Thank you." It's frequently seen commented when thanking Towa for a stream or when she's thanking superchat donators.
- yab ExplanationIn a prank that Pekora pulled on Towa, she tricked her into blowing up what is supposedly Sora's mountain in Minecraft. Sora then logged onto the server almost immediately after "her" mountain was reduced to a crater, freaking out Towa who didn't know what to say. Towa then mistyped "yabai" in the chat as "yab", which is now used a lot by the chatroom in dangerous situations such as firefights in her APEX streams. It has also seen use for vTubing in general, where the term is used in situations where something private about the streamer is compromised, such as accidental face/location reveals.
- towa/twap/twappi/tower/toki no toware... ExplanationOn 4chan, increasingly absurd misspellings of Towa's name have become popular whenever she holds a stream. In her Among Us stream on 10/31/20, a bunch of 4chan anons even hopped into the game lobby with variations on that meme.
- No. 1 AquSui AntiExplanationTowa's tendency to vocally criticize her StartEnd members, Aqua and Suisei, whenever they beginning getting flirty, led fans to jokingly dub her the No. 1 hater of the AquSui ship.
Generation 5
Yukihana Lamy
- Liverface ExplanationKorone stumbles into the moniker as a commendation on how Lamy is able to hold her liquor (by hololive standards, at least) when Lamy calls in. Sometimes Lamy will introduce herself in collab settings as so for a quick joke.
- Lamy variants
- Yukihana Nemy ExplanationWhen Lamy is feeling sleepy in the morning-noontime hours, from a portmanteau of 'nemui' and 'Lamy'. Nemy is sure to show up without having gotten enough sleep the prior night, whether it's from inability to sleep in general and/or having stayed up late playing games.
- Yukihana Nyamy ExplanationWhen Lamy is feeling especially cat-like, furthered by the cat ears in her second model, and then even MORE during her Stray streams. A portmanteau of 'nya' and 'Lamy'.
- Maou/Demon Lord Lamy ExplanationHAONI drew their take on the concept and everyone, including Lamy, ran with it. Every once in a while a superchat will request an appearance.
- Nyaasu/Meowth voice ExplanationEvery so often a gravelly voice will crop up, resembling that of Meowth from Pokémon. Lamy has stated that 'Meowth' breaks out whenever it feels like doing so, and curiously doesn't strain Lamy's voice much.
- ShishiLamy horror game date ExplanationBotan and Lamy play a horror game together, and everyone else delights in laughing at how Lamy is absurdly weak to jumpscares.
- Babu rattle ExplanationOn very rare occasions Lamy will pull out a baby rattle toy. If used on another holomem, there's a fairly good chance of them briefly reverting in age and making baby noises/uttering baby speak, used to devastating effect in the holobabies/Mama Tournament collab. Fans and some holomem meme the rattle itself as actually being a sake bottle with a few ice cubes in it.
- Lawnmower ExplanationBARIBARIBARIBARIBARIBARIBARI, as seen during her holo no graffiti debut. It's shown up a handful of times in regular streams too.
- and then Chainsaw ExplanationLoud chainsaw noises ensue when on a rampage felling trees after gambling away all her scrap in RUST.
Momosuzu Nene
- Super Hyper Ultra Ultimate Deluxe Perfect Amazing Shining God 東方不敗 Master Ginga Victory Strong Cute Beautiful Galaxy Baby 無限 無敵 無双 NENECHI Explanation When presented with the opportunity to give herself a nickname, Nene likes to type in hilariously over-the-top names like "Super Nenechi", "NENEMAX", etc. Fans eventually started combining her long list of titles to this effect.
- Nene is a seal ExplanationSome time in early 2021, one Taiwanese YouTube channel started uploading videos of seals dubbed with Nene's voice clips. No one knows how this person came up with the idea or why it works as well as it does, but it quickly became viral enough that Nene and many other hololive members have accepted that Nene is a seal.
- Lamy's Armpit Sweat ExplanationNene has mentioned that she would like to bottle up Lamy's sweat and selling it to fans at a premium. This has since extended to sweat and other such from the other idols as well, although Nene is notable for being arrested by the Oozora Police Department after being reported by her own fans...for making it too expensive.
- Our wife ExplanationStemming from Nene's tendency to accept every superchat marriage proposal to add to "Nene's Husband Collection", this leads fans to refer to Nene as "our wife" and happily accepting themselves as one of Nene's many husbands
Shishiro Botan
- Shopping Cart Explanation Her go-to-vehicle in Trials Rising which sends her into laughing fits no one has seen before, much to the delight of her viewers.
Omaru Polka
- Polka is a phoenix ExplanationWhile Pekora and Okayu had been watching Polka's debut stream together, Okayu wondered aloud what type of animal she was supposed to be. Pekora responded by calling her a phoenix, but insists that she said fennec, and that Okayu misheard her. The name stuck, with her now being grouped with Kiara, an actual phoenix.
- POL/POLMAO ExplanationPolka's overseas audience uses altered versions of "lol" and "lmao" to communicate laughter, which Polka herself has latched onto after discovering their meaning. "POL" in particular has been used by her as a Madness Mantra. "POL" also gets used as a replacement syllable for any word containing something similar, or added onto the ends of words when referencing her in particular.
- Polgratulations/Omedepol ExplanationPolka identified these memes about herself after celebrating 300,000 subscribers using her name in conjuction with encouraging messages.
- Poltato ExplanationSimilar to the above, but referring to Polka's initial lackluster PC, which is commonly called potato hardware. She has mentioned before that her equipment isn't the best, and wishes to upgrade to a "Beef PC." Fan art has depicted her trying to stream using a literal potato as her PC.
- 300k subs Vtuber Explanation Polka's terrible defense when questioned on whether she was the Impostor in a round of Among Us was to boast about her latest subscriber milestone. She was then unceremoniously booted out, while screaming about how they can't do this to her. Fans would use this as a way to cheer her on, Botan would later use this joke during their collaboration stream of the same game in dead player text chat, and Kiara would also go on to use it when voting her out during another collaboration with the EN branch. The meme frequently resurfaces as Polka achieves subscriber milestones. e.g. 400k subs Vtuber.
- Hire idols, get clowns. Hire a clown, get an idol. ExplanationAlthough she is a circus performer and ostensibly focused on the comical side of things, Polka actually has a great voice, and has both an original song and multiple covers. Naturally, this has caused the fans to joke, in the comment sections of her musical work, that after finally giving up on the idea of hololive as an "idol group" and relabeling it an "entertainment company" following the constant antics of his supposed "idols" acting more like crass comedians, YAGOO proceeded to hire a literal clown, only to be bamboozled again when it turns out she is more of an idol than most of the actual idols.
- The Entire Circus Explanation Polka is considered by her fandom to be a truly veritable One-Man Band due to versatility and energy, being able to carry a skit all by herself and occasionally playing both parts of a Boke and Tsukkomi Routine. This term originated from "You are not a clown, you are the entire circus" but spun into a sincere compliment of Polka's talents.
- The Collar ExplanationBecame a thing after this Tweet was posted, where two versions of Polka are shown side by side, a submissive one wearing a pet collar, and a dominant one holding it by the leash, with the caption roughly meaning "To have a pet or be the pet". Almost immediately, the collar imagery became a hit among the fanbase, with edits cropping up replacing Polka with other members like Reine or Kiara, to name a few
- Batman Polka ExplanationWhen IRyS started Minecraft for the first time, she accidentally went into the JP server instead of the EN one and almost immediately got chased around by hostile mobs without a means to defend herself. While she was struggling, Polka logged in and ended up saving her, before giving her some food to heal and leading her to a bed to save. Polka then logged out as swiftly as she appeared, giving off the air of a mysterious vigilante. IRyS and her fans started comparing Polka to Batman after that, which is highly ironic considering her character's theme. Polka herself has also acknowledged this. Since then, Polka has assisted HoloEN members on numerous occasions, guiding them through the JP server as needed and rescuing their stuff if they met an untimely death, leading fans to declare Polka the hero of the EN crew.
Generation 6/holoX
La+ Darknesss
- Gura and Shion's lovechild ExplanationLa+ is frequently joked as their secret offspring due to her inheriting many of their traits, such as being really small and flat, as well as having a predominantly purple color scheme and comically bratty personality like Shion's and her streaked hair matching Gura's. That Gura and Shion's just gotten "married" about a month before La+ debuted further fans the fire.
- YMD ExplanationIn her debut, La+ demanded that her followers answer her with "Yes My Dark" (in English). Others have applied it to other meanings including "Yes My Duck" "Yes My Daughter" or "Yagoo My Daddy".
- Quickly mutated into jokes that holoX's "secret society" is actually YaMaDa Denki, a Japanese consumer electronics chain.
- Yeet My Dark ExplanationAn alternate interpretation of YMD that became wildly popular after Calli confessed to wanting to "throw [La+] over Mt. Fuji" due to her small stature. It quickly spawned numerous fanarts of La+ being thrown around, sometimes through the windows of Hololive's main office.
- "I like ass!" ExplanationA mispronunciation of "I like Earth!" during one of Calli's English learning streams, due to La+'s accent. She would later publish a Tweet to correct this.
- La+'s perch ExplanationIt is common to find comments jokingly asserting that the raven is the real La+, while the demon girl herself, typically identified as Yamada or something of the sort, only serves as a glorified perch for the bird.
- "Wifi-kun, Ganbatte!" *BOOM* ExplanationA fan-video of La+ encouraging her wifi to try their best, followed by a Smash Cut of an internet modem exploding in response. Other videos that follow would splice clips of many sources to depict "Wifi-kun" trying their best for La+.
- La+ falling over ExplanationLa+ tripped over her own foot and Face Planted on-stage during Hololive's 5th fes in March 2024, which immediately became a meme among fans. Fanart variants of this incident usually involve her lying on the floor in various ways, such as Yamcha's infamous death pose, or Peter Griffin falling down the stairs.
Takane Lui
- Raddit ExplanationA typo of "Reddit" in Lui's first official post on the site, which was in English. It was striking enough to become an instant hit among site users, in a typically similar format to the Cooler Daniel meme and usually featuring Lui's Kamina shades.
- Ha-HAA! ExplanationLui cackling at her own joke from one of her Super Mario World streams became the subject of MAD-mixing (like this or this), which Lui couldnt help but notice. Even La+ has come to know of it, and it came full circle when Lui covers "Kyoufuu All-Back" with the same laugh.
Hakui Koyori
- Wile E. Koyori ExplanationBeing a clumsy coyote that is also a Ditzy Genius, several people have compared her with Wile E. Coyote from the Looney Tunes franchise, sometimes adding Reine as the Road Runner to complete the joke.
Sakamata Chloe
- Chloe Aznable ExplanationOriginated from the subset of viewers who are also Gundam fans, due to Chloe's Irisless Eye Mask Of Mystery and hoodie making her look like a Char Clone. Certain related fanarts even include Char's custom Zaku behind her as well.
- The REAL reason Gura and Nene are not active. ExplanationFans took notice due to Gura and Nene's inactivity on Twitter and streaming, Chloe being on Twitter and an Orca being the reason why the two are not being active, considering orcas are natural predators to sharks and seals.
- It's becoming very common to add Chloe's voice into an existing orca footage, such as BBC documentaries of them being friendly towards humans but being outright brutal to seals and sharks (thus adding audio of Nene and Gura being terrified of Chloe as her personal Butt-Monkey) as well as adding her voice in the 1977 film Orca: The Killer Whale.
- "Take a bath!" ExplanationAfter Chloe realized she smelled sweaty, she came clean that she only showers weekly, leading to a reputation among her viewers and other members of being The Pig-Pen. This quote is often thrown around to shame her when she does something bad (Ex. killing as an Impostor in Among Us).
- Chloe being Sprigatito/Nyahoja due to their similar appearances.
- Chloe's hieroglyphs ExplanationChloe's notoriously messy Japanese handwriting has been the butt of many jokes in the community, with fans and members alike poking fun of how it's often unintelligible to the point of resembling some kind of ancient script.
Kazama Iroha
- Ohi Mark! ExplanationA meme referencing this legendary scene from The Room (2003), which originated from Iroha's debut stream, where she, characteristically of "ponX", made a typo in her intro slides, which turned "Oshi Mark" into "Ohi Mark". Naturally, the chat and Reddit immediately jumped on this, as did Ollie and Calli on Twitter, with the zombie beating the reaper to the punch.
- Nande ExplanationMeaning "why" in Japanese, she frequently uses this word very often. Fans since has refer this as her Character Tic rather than her own "De gozaru".
- Hoshiyomi's representative ExplanationSuisei never gave the Hoshiyomi a mascot or any sort of representation, so the fan group elected to have Iroha, herself a diehard Hoshiyomi, represent them.
- Wide Iroha/Wide Gozaru ExplanationDue to a presumed mistake, Iroha started recording a short for her channel on December 10, 2023 without adjusting her model to fit the vertical format, causing her to look horizontally-squashed and zoomed all the way in, before realizing her goof and restarting it properly. This quickly gave rise to fanart and edits depicting her in this wide format, most usually with Piano Fantasia's Song for Denise playing in the background in the same vein as the Wide Putin Walking meme.
DEV_IS
Hiodoshi Ao
- Choco-sensei's Zako successor ExplanationAs Choco decided not to participate in 2024's Mario Kart cup, her status as the Zako Queen would be challenged by Ao, who finished the Zako Cup with single digit points, effectively establishing her as the new Zako Queen.
- Ultimate Girlfailure ExplanationIn spite of her cool ikemen persona, Ao turns out to be a total goofball who easily gets embarrassed and is hilariously weak to horror games, leading many fans to declare her as one of hololive's biggest girlfailures.
- Rizz overflow ExplanationDespite her hilarious attempts to seduce her fellow members with her ikemen persona, both them and fans have noted that Ao is genuinely capable of acting cool and/or attractive...but it's inversely proportionate to how hard she's actively trying to do it. Fans like to joke that when she actually tries, her charisma overflows and becomes negative instead.
Otonose Kanade
- 1.25x speed ExplanationShe speaks Japanese in a slow and deliberate pace, with fans saying that it's at 0.75 times normal speed. Whenever she's clipped, fans found that adjusting the playback to 1.25 times the speed will have her sound like she's speaking normally.
Juufuutei Raden
- Raden is the mask ExplanationDue to her association with her Noh mask and having made her debut(s) wearing it, it's become a recurring joke among her viewers that "Raden" is the mask itself, and nobody has a clue who the girl wearing it is, in the same vein as Shinpachi and his glasses in Gintama.
Todoroki Hajime
- Newest HolobabyExplanationFans were quick to note that Hajime has a similar 'baby' articulation to Miko, with people quick to class her as another Holobaby
- Bun BunExplanationRoughly equivocating to the "Brmm Brmm" sound a car makes. Hajime noticed that the written kanji form of her surname "Todoroki" 轟, was formed from three of the word for "car" 車, hence a car sound effect became Hajime's trademark
