"Oh my god, Becky, look at her butt."
— Girl in opening of Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back"

Butts are often used for comedy purposes whenever attention isn't drawn to them for attractiveness purposes. One way of doing this is by making this body part so ridiculously large that it looks cartoonish on a real person.

While this trope has some relation to Hartman Hips and the Impossible Hourglass Figure, that is a deliberate design choice by animators to indicate the maturity of specifically female characters, not to make the character look ridiculous (usually). This also doesn't refer to a person who has a large butt because they are just generally fat or obese, it's when the size of someone's behind clearly doesn't match the rest of their body to an intentionally absurd degree.

For added humor, the huge butt may smack into things and people as the character moves, knocking them over and/or breaking them. Sometimes the character will flaunt their ass by shaking it. They might also moon people. On top of being used against people, the comically oversized butt is sometimes turned against the owner themselves and becomes the target of buttocks-based trauma since its size makes it an easy target (plus in Fanservice-adjacent examples it gives the creators an excuse to focus on someone's butt all the more). Female examples are more likely to skew towards or parody exaggerated Fanservice than male examples since traditional beauty standards dictate women should have larger butts while men should have smaller, tight ones. And let's not get started with the "does this make my butt look big?" polylemma.

Comically oversized butts are also popular for the Inflating Body Gag where the butt expands to ridiculous size. Oftentimes followed by the butt exploding from the increase in size. This character will most likely be really good at a Ground Pound attack.

Sub-Trope to Joke of the Butt. This is a Sister Trope to the Boob-Based Gag, as well as Gag Penis, Gag Nose, and Gag Lips. See also Balloon Belly. Contrast Baby Don't Got Back, which is making fun of a character's lack of derriere rather than an abundance of it. Some variations of Bare-Bottomed Monkey may fall under this trope.note

  • In an American beer commercial, a man admits he feels like his current girlfriend just might be the one—and his best friend encourages him to see if he still feels the same after meeting his girlfriend's mom, on the logic that that's what the girlfriend will probably look like in a few decades. So that night, the girlfriend and her mom come over to the guy's place. The guy looks through the peephole and is relieved that the mom is still pretty attractive for her age. Then he opens the door and finally sees the mom has a massive butt, and hips wider than the doorframe.
