The Other Side provides examples of:

    In General
  • Actionized Adaptation: The fanfics are full of action scenes, some of which last for the entirety of single (or even multiple) chapters.
  • Adaptation Amalgamation: The fanfics combine elements (mostly the cast and past events) from World Tour, the first Trolls movie, Trolls: The Beat Goes On! and Trolls: TrollsTopia, as well as unused ones in the Trolls franchise overall.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Besides amalgamating, the series also expands upon the overall Trolls universe by further detailing the Strings' backstory, as well as making them create new alternate universes into the beginning of the second fanfic.
  • Adaptational Badass: Most of the canon characters become more badass as what should be expected from an Actionized Adaptation. But the one who especially takes the cake is Poppy, who takes on more gradual levels of fighting as the series progresses, receiving training on swords (which eventually become her weapon of choice) and firearms in the first fanfic and getting superpowers in the second. It gets to the point that she becomes a Blood Knight whenever she gets to fighting, and ends up practically nothing like the Badass Pacifist she previously used to be. Out of the other canon characters, only Chenille reaches the same sentimental level as Poppy.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: In the original movies, Poppy is a All-Loving Heroine, Badass Pacifist, Cuddle Bug, Genki Girl, and The Pollyanna all rolled into one. The series on the other hand, while still maintaining the five above qualities, heavily downplays them in favor of her being an Anti-Hero and Blood Knight who Took a Level in Badass, becoming a One-Woman Army and Physical God in the process, evolving into The Dreaded as well.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, the worst crimes Bash commits are invading Pop Village with the intent of draining out its fun and liveliness, in addition to attempting to feed Mr. Dinkles to a mammoth. Here, he is The Sociopath who has gone through a period of Sanity Slippage and is perfectly fine with killing, looting, and even (in some extreme cases) raping Trolls and his people alike.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: In comparison to the original movie, which only had mild violence, this series has numerous chapters packed with extreme violence and gore, especially in the first fanfic. While the violent sequences start off somewhat light, they eventually get really graphic and brutalized, with some characters bringing themselves to Blood Knight levels. Even characters like Poppy (who might probably take the cake out of the entire cast, since her fighting style is just that extreme) are not immune to this. And even unlike DreamWorks Animation's more actionized movies/franchises such as Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon, it's exempt of Gory Discretion Shots. This is an especially jarring case of the trope for a fan work out of DreamWorks' first franchise explicitly aimed at children.
  • Canon Foreigner: There are a bunch of new original characters to The Other Side, including two new Troll Tribe that the Reggaeton Trolls and K-Pop Trolls are affiliated to and a number of deceased Troll Tribe leaders, one of which is Poppy's mother.
    • This continues in the sequel, as more subgenres and their representatives make an appearance. The most prominent is Melody Song, who is the cousin of Val Thundershock in this universe.
  • Canon Welding: The fanfics often take several different Trolls stories and have them co-exist in the same universe, albeit with slight differences. It can overlap with Ultimate Universe because of this.
  • Dark Fic: Zig-Zagged. The series as a whole isn't necessarily darker and edgier than the original movie (asides from other fanfics integrated into the multiverse that the second fanfic follows upon), but is full of violence and action compared to the movie's mild use of it. That being said, it still balances its more dramatic moments with much more lighthearted ones.
  • Death by Adaptation: In Chapter 19. While explaining his backstory to Poppy, Miles Morales reveals that, in addition to his entire universe collapsing, his parents were murdered by the Spot after escaping the Spider-Society and trying to prevent his Canon Event from occurring. He then murdered the Spot in turn after overpowering him before he was transported to the Space Between.
  • Four Lines, All Waiting: A staple in the series so far.
    • In The Other Side, Poppy's group of friends split up to travel to different Troll Tribes to recruit their leaders against Queen Barb.
      • Poppy's group (consisting of her, Branch, Biggie, Mr. Dinkles, and Meadow Spriggs) first travel to Symphonyville, where they pick up Trollzart and Pennywhistle, and then Lonesome Flats, where they pick up Delta Dawn, Hickory, Clampers, and Growley Pete.
      • DJ Suki's group (consisting of her, Satin and Chenille, Gia Grooves, Bella Brightly, and CJ Suki) travel to Techno Reef, where they pick up King Trollex, Techno Beat Drop Button, Bliss Marina, and Tadd (originally Coral Blush).
      • Cooper's group (consisting of him, Guy Diamond, Smidge, Legsly, and Tiny Diamond) travel to Vibe City.
      • Finally, Harper's group (consisting of her, Mandy Sparkledust, Moxie Dewdrop, and Aspen Heitz, and Priscilla) stowaway on Barb's Angler-Bus and try to stall her World Tour. This also extends to Priscilla pretending to defect to Rock to garner Queen Barb's trust, only to genuinely enjoy her time with the Rock Trolls.
    • The Other Side Of The Storm goes further.
      • The main plot focuses on Poppy traveling back to the Space Between and learning how to properly harness her newfound powers garnered by the Six Strings' destruction. In doing so, she learns about The Multiverse and the vast effects the destruction of the Six Strings had on them.
      • The rest of the Trolls take shelter in Branch's bunker, with Branch himself organizing a search party for Poppy and devising a plan to recruit several Trolls in their upcoming battle against the combined forces of the Chanty Trolls and the Party Crashers.
      • Connected to the Branch subplot, DJ Suki and King Trollex eventually travel to the kingdoms of the Subgenre Trolls to recruit allies for the fight ahead. They are accompanied by CJ Suki, Keith, Priscilla, Tiny Diamond, Coral Blush (Tadd), Clampers Buttonwillow, Gemma Fur, Vega Swift, and Val's younger cousin Melody Song, who acts at their babysitter, and eventually joined by Val's friend Petra, Billy Reverb, and a young Rock Troll named Grace.
      • The Chanty Trolls themselves are given a good amount of focus, establishing them as an affable but no less ruthless gang of pirates who are actually outcasts discarded by the world they live in. Their leader Captain Blue wishes to unite the Troll Tribes with the Six Strings, unaware of their destruction in The Other Side.
      • The Folk Rock Trolls are also given an equal amount, despite being seemingly disconnected to the main plots. Their kingdom is the safe haven for the last Magical Musical Troll Agatha, her lover King Trollex, and even Sisu from Raya and the Last Dragon, as well as the location for the final battle between the Troll Tribes and the Chanty Trolls.
      • Also seemingly disconnected to the main plot for the time being, a group of Trollsonas will become more prominent by focusing on their backstories before being recruited by Poppy for the final battle. The group includes a Country Troll named Olivia and a Hip-Hop Troll named XXX.
  • Massive Multiplayer Crossover: As mentioned above, the Strings created several alternate universes in the wake of their destruction. Most of those universes are stories written by different authors, but they also involve different properties, including specific ones from DreamWorks Animation.
    • She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Adora and Catra appear in the stories. Their roles were small but important in The Other Side, but will reportedly get bigger prominence in The Other Side Of The Storm. The rest of the cast will reportedly appear in supporting roles as well.
    • Raya and the Last Dragon:
      • From Chapter 7 of The Other Side Of The Storm onward, Sisu appears alongside an alternate version of Trollex, who is Aggie's boyfriend in their (Trollex and Aggie's) dimension.
      • In Chapter 10, Raya herself appears in the Space Between while Namaari appears in the living world; the both of them are Dragon Trolls. Raya joins Poppy's group while Namaari reunites with Sisu as they join DJ Suki's group on the journey to the Folk Rock Kingdom.
    • Encanto:
      • From Chapter 8 of The Other Side Of The Storm onward, Mirabel Madrigal appears in the Space Between as a Latin Troll, aiding Poppy during her journey to harness her powers and becomes her Best Friend in the process.
      • In Chapter 19, her cousin Camilo (also a Latin Troll) appears, confusing her with his Mirabel variant.
      • In Chapters 32 & 33, after returning to her home universe, Mirabel reunites with her Abuela Alma and cousin Antonio before returning back to the Trolls universe, the latter two acting as Secret Keepers until she returns.
      • In the second chapter of The Other Side Of The Storm: Part 2,
    • Luca: From Chapter 18 of The Other Side Of The Storm, Alberto appears as a Techno Troll and the boyfriend of Mei Lee.
    • Turning Red: From Chapter 10 of The Other Side Of The Storm, Mei makes her debut as a Panda Troll the same time as Raya. It's revealed that her boyfriend is Alberto Scorfano.
    • Spider-Man: Spider-Verse:
      • In Chapter 18 of The Other Side Of The Storm onwards, Miles Morales appears as a Funk/Hip-Hop Troll who maintains his spider-like powers and abilities. He has a new girlfriend in the form of a teenage kraken.
      • In Chapter 34, Gwen Stacy appears, still reeling from the guilt of not just essentially condemning Miles' father to die, but his mother and home universe as well. She becomes determined to find and makes amends with him.
    • Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken: In Chapter 18, the titular teenage kraken herself appears as a Techno Troll in her normal form. It’s revealed that her new boyfriend is a Funk/Hip-Hop Troll with the powers and abilities of a radioactive spider.
    • The Super Mario Bros. Movie:
    • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
    • Sofia the First:
    • Elena of Avalor:
    • Miraculous Ladybug:
    • PAW Patrol: Skye appears during the denouement of The Other Side Of The Storm, having arrived in the Space Between following her Heroic Sacrifice during the climax of PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie. She is taken under Poppy's wing and will play a more major role in The Other Side Of The Storm: Part 2.
    • From other Trolls fanfics:
  • Named by the Adaptation: Coral Blush (now Tadd) and his parents were already present in World Tour as minor characters, but the latter were unnamed. Here they're named Kelpy and Seagrass.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Starting from the second fanfic onward, many different alternate universes now coexist with the main one following the destruction of the Strings in the climax of The Other Side.
    • On a small but no less important note, Satin and Chenille have their hair cut in half by Bash, thus separating them and subverting Conjoined Twins.
  • Promoted to Love Interest: Many examples.
    • The primary example is that of DJ Suki and King Trollex, who form over their bond of being DJ's. Naturally, CJ Suki acts as a Shipper on Deck for them.
    • Another prominent example is Delta Dawn and Hickory. Birds of a Feather flock together, it would seem.
    • Harper and Archer, one of the Party Crashers. The rest of the group is weirded out, which continues into the sequel.
    • On a minor but no less surprising note, Riff serves as this to Kim-Petit, one of the K-Pop Trolls, in a form of Ship Tease.
    • In The Other Side Of The Storm, Chenille is revealed to have a crush on Prince D following Chapter 14, with the feelings reciprocated. Prince D himself is revealed to be in a former relationship with Viva.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Spirit World: The Space Between seems to be a blend of this and The Shangri-La. When Poppy briefly dies, she is transported to the Space Between, an idyllic realm where time and space are seemingly non-existent. It functions as a mirror image to the real-world Troll Kingdom, with Poppy's mother as the High Queen.
  • Titled After the Song: A trend of the series so far.
    • The Other Side is titled after "The Other Side" from the World Tour soundtrack.
    • The Other Side Of The Storm is named after "The Other Side of the Storm" from the Season 1 finale of The Beat Goes On!.
    • Numerous chapters of The Other Side are also named after a song that plays in them. These range from songs in the original movie such as "Born To Die" and "Just Sing" to new ones like "Digital Love" and "Kickstart My Heart".
    • The direct sequel, The Other Side Of The Storm, continues the trend with chapters named "Con Calma" and "BOOMBAYAH". There are also those from other movies such as "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?", "Ultraluminary", and three from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: "Run It", "Every Summertime", and "Fire In The Sky".
  • Villain World: In one such alternate universe, all the Tribe Leaders apparently got the same idea as Barb to unite all the other Tribes under one music, specifically their own. While they rely solely on intimidation to get the job done, they're not above committing murder and even genocide either.
  • Worldbuilding: The series expands beyond the six main Troll Tribes and even the four Subgenre Tribes to introduce more Subgenre Tribes that never existed outside of canon. Another staple is the mythology of the Bounty Hunters, specfically how and why they became who they are today, their depictions ranging from Lovable Rogue and Hitman with a Heart to even Hired Guns.

    The Other Side
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed, but present.
    • Delta Dawn acts more affable and cooperative with Queen Poppy here, even comforting her when she, Branch, and Biggie are thrown into jail. She comforts her again when Biggie abandons the group to return home and sees her as the daughter she never had. In addition, she grows fond of Meadow Spriggs when she sings "Born To Die" with her and the Country Trolls, and Meadow herself is the only one not thrown into jail. Instead, Delta gives her Country Troll-clothes and the job of helping her and Growly Pete patrol the town.
    • The story sheds some light on Queen Barb's more redeeming qualities, even showcasing her forming a sisterly relationship with Priscilla and mourning Riff's supposed demise.
    • Also, Creek appears to be more mellow following his return and defection to the side of good.
  • Ascended Extra: Many of the Tribe Leaders are given much larger roles and interactions with Queen Poppy and each other. Also, the supporting characters debuting in Trolls: The Beat Goes On! have roles here. For example, Priscilla joins Harper's group to inflitrate the Rock Trolls, only to become a honorary member and personal apprentice of Queen Barb.
  • Becoming the Mask: As mentioned above, Priscilla unintentionally stows away with Harper's group to inflitrate Queen Barb's entourage and form a plan. When she gets caught, she feigns defection to the Rock Trolls before she actually enjoys her time with them.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Riff plays this role to Priscilla, even shielding her from an arriving Creek as he joins the Bounty Hunters.
  • Body Horror: The scene where Poppy destroys the Strings was drastically changed from the movie and applies this trope at its finest, being a particular mention of the series' overall increase in graphic violence. Whereas she suffered no actual harm whatsoever in the movie (only seemingly getting her colors taken away before "Just Sing"), she ends up badly burned here, to the point of vomiting blood and dying as a result even though she was eventually resurrected.
  • The Bus Came Back: In contrast to Trolls World Tour, DJ Suki appears in much a prominent role, traveling to Techno Reef with Satin and Chenille, Gia Grooves, Bella Brightly, and her niece CJ to recruit Trollex. Creek also returns, having survived his fate in Trolls but as a Wild Card instead of the Dirty Coward he was previously portrayed as.
  • Children Are Innocent: Played with. While the younger Trolls are quick to warm up to the other genres than the older Trolls, Priscilla is hesitant to accept the Rock Trolls until Queen Barb plays a Cool Big Sis to her.
  • Cool Big Sis: Queen Barb and, by extension, Carol both play this role to Priscilla.
  • Disney Death: Poppy, after she destroys the Strings. However, this is deconstructed in The Other Side Of The Storm, as her temporary death and subsequent resurrection has left her traumatized.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: Right before she dies after being exposed to the energy of the Strings, Branch tearfully tells Poppy that he loves her. She responds with "I love you too..." before fading into ashes.
  • Good Parents: Queen Poppy's mother acts kind, understanding, and cordial towards her daughter, even granting her the chance to return back to the living world. She even states that she would not let any harm be brought to her family, even in death.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Creek starts off as an ally of Barb, but somewhat reverts to the side of the heroes. It is revealed that their alliance with Barb was part of their plan to get close to Poppy to warn her about Barb's plan.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Poppy sacrifices her life to destroy the Strings. Fortunately, it doesn't last long.
  • Mooks: In the first fanfic, both the generic Party Crashers and Rock Trolls serve as this, though the former's case is straighter since they're the ones who are mowed down.
  • Mook Lieutenant: Bash serves as this to the Party Crashers under the Rock Troll Tribe.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Poppy and the rest of the Pop Trolls in the group have this when they found out the Pop Troll Ancestor attempted to remix the other genres into Pop. Also, unlike in World Tour, Barb reaches this realization when her actions not only brought the Tribes together in the worst way imaginable, but also indirectly led to the death of the Pop Queen. She throws the guitar holding the destroyed Strings into the lava below in an act of late repentance.
  • No Body Left Behind: After Poppy destroys the Strings and becomes horribly burned as a result, she immediately dies via disintegration.

The Other Side Of The Storm
  • Accidental Misnaming: Barb refers to DJ Suki as either "DJ Suri" and "DJ Sammy". A few other characters get on it, culminating in DJ Stefani much to Suki's annoyance.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: In Chapter 20. Although she doesn't officially appear until Trolls Band Together, Poppy's sister Viva appears to secretly aid the rest of the Troll Tribes through her encounter with Chenille and Prince D.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Viva is revealed to be the former girlfriend of Prince D in Chapter 20.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed, but present. During the first two chapters, Val is far more aloof to everyone not from the Rock Tribe but it's mainly because of her distrust for the Pop Tribe after what their Ancestor did to the rest of the Troll Tribes. She's more friendly and protective to her younger cousin Melody, to the point where she has a Heel Realization after Melody calls her out for her lack of trust and forgiveness.
  • Affably Evil: Captain Blue shares traits of this. While she is in pursuit of the Six Strings unaware of their destruction in the previous story, she is cordial towards her crew and her adversaries. In the eighteenth chapter, she forms an alliance to save her crew from the Siren Trolls, who turn many of the members against her through brainwashing.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: When searching for Grace, Petra hears her laugh followed by someone else's laughter. In her internal narration, she thinks about Changelings, which are supposedly worse than the Party Crashers.
  • Beach Episode: A given in the Latin City arc, but especially noticeable around Chapter 8.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Poppy and, to a lesser extent, her new army pulls this in the final battle, especially Chapter 30. When the heroes are on their last legs, surrounded by the villains who are holding CJ and Priscilla hostage, a now superpowered Poppy arrives and wipes the floor with them.
  • Canon Character All Along: In Chapter 27. After the battle between Poppy and Blue results in the latter pulling a Heel–Face Turn, Blue reveals that her current alias is actually a literal mask for her true identity: Amethyst van der Troll.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Velvet and Veneer from Band Together appear in Chapter 21 during a Flash Forward sequence in the Space Between. Specifically, their music video for "Watch Me Work" is displayed to Poppy's new group of friends, who are left confused, embarrassed, and/or unimpressed...except Mirabel and Ruby.
  • Enemy Mine: In the eighteenth chapter, Blue forms this with the rest of the Troll Tribes to save her crew from the Siren Trolls, who had brainwashed many of them beforehand.
  • Happily Adopted: Played for Laughs in the nineteenth chapter. After Miles Morales reveals his Dark and Troubled Past prior to his arrival in the Space Between, Poppy decides to become his adoptive older sister in response.
  • Malicious Misnaming: After the disastrous aftermath of their Rock Battle, Val calls DJ "DJ Sabrina".
  • Morality Pet: Melody Song is this to Val. While Val harbors a grudge against the Pop Trolls due to past misdeeds, she eventually agrees to give them a chance at the behest of her younger cousin.
  • Puppy Love: A downplayed example between CJ and Keith. Priscilla is understandably annoyed and slightly weirded out.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Lampshaded and Justified. Barb greets Lucy as an Old Friend, but Val has no idea who Lucy is. Lucy herself explains that she was banished from Volcano Rock City for a reason yet to be further explored.
  • Stepford Smiler: Hinted with Poppy. It's suspected that she is faking her facade and directing her focus to TrollsTopia to distract herself from the fact that she died during the climax of The Other Side.
  • That Man Is Dead: As mentioned above, a variant with Poppy. After temporarily dying as a result of her destroying the Strings, Poppy's mood becomes considerably more solemn and somber.

The Other Side Of The Storm: Part 2
  • Time Skip: The story takes place 2 months after The Other Side Of The Storm.
