Littlest Pet Shop (Fan Novelization) is a fan fiction written by Kenny Rutter (the same one behind Beast Wars Fan Series and the My Little Pony Crossover Saga).

It is exactly what the title says – a fan novelization of the 2012 television series.

Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated since 2018.

This particular fan novelization contains the following tropes:

• A Day in the Limelight: Some chapters focus more on certain characters than others, though Blythe is always the focus of one of the two plotlines of a given chapter.
• Adaptation Expansion: Some more characters are fleshed out thanks to added backstory, like Blythe still not fully getting over her mother's passing, and some characters who were nameless in the show are now given names in this story — for example, Blythe's friends from before she had to move away (Madeline and Andrea) and the fly Vinnie meets in the city dump, whom he names Garmin, after the GPS.
• All Animals Are Domesticated:
  • It's said early on that Littlest Pet Shop even caters to the more exotic animals, with Penny Ling (panda) and Minka (monkey) being the most obvious examples.
  • In "What Did You Say?", Blythe mentions that a bearcat -only native to southeast Asia- once came to the shop.
• A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Sunil is really worried about the robotic pet toys.

• Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: The main pets are multicolored.
• Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: In one of Russell’s songs, he says that he and the other pets will make a mess and not clean it up, blow all their money shopping, and they'll take a wrong turn and get lost.
• Artistic License – Animal Care: In one chapter, the pets are shown eating candy and suffering no ill effects apart from a stomach ache and a bad sugar high. Though Russell and Blythe at least make sure to point out just how dangerous sugar can be to them, saying it can make them incredibly sick or worse.
• Be Careful What You Wish For: Within the first few pages, Blythe makes an internal comment that she wishes she knew what they were saying, only to have a minor freakout when she finally gets to Littlest Pet Shop for the first time.
• Bilingual Bonus: Esteban the parrot occasionally drops Spanish words and phrases into his sentences.
• Brick Joke:
  • At the beginning of one chapter, Mrs. Twombly brings home a garish dress. At the end of the chapter it's implied that she decided to give Blythe said dress since she was so busy making the pets and Roger's outfits that she didn't have time to make her own. Blythe is less than enthusiastic.
  • The hair on the counter in "Eve of Destruction".
  • In "Bad Hair Day", Raoul the groomer comes down with a nasty bug that's said to be hitting a lot of people around town. Jump all the way ahead to "What Did You Say?", and Blythe has gotten it from Raoul.
• Broken Pedestal:
  • In "Lights, Camera, Mongoose!" the pets meet the famous movie star mongoose, Sharukh, who they all admire. That is until they see that Sharukh is a lazy jerk who expects everyone to do everything for him.

• Chekhov's Gun: Blythe's headphones in "Gailbreak!" and her emergency comb in "Dumb Dumbwaiter".
• Chekhov's Gunwoman: In the first chapter, a woman named Chrissie visits the then-closing Littlest Pet Shop in search of possible locations for a sweet shop. In "Topped with Buttercream", it turns out she's Youngmee Song's aunt and she ultimately opens the sweet shop next door to the Littlest Pet Shop.
• Complexity Addiction: Blythe calls Russell out on this in one chapter.
• Corpsing: In-Universe in "Sweet (Truck) Ride." The pets are trying to film a re-enactment of how they accidentally got the truck going and not Blythe, but Zoe and Pepper get a bad case of the giggles when trying to film their part of the incident.
• Corrupt Corporate Executive: Inverted with Fisher Biskit, who’s said to be a rather decent man, compared to his daughters.
• Crash-Into Hello: Blythe meets Josh Sharpe in the park after slamming into him while practicing on some roller skates Sue gave her.
• Curse Cut Short: Jasper comes DANGEROUSLY close to calling the Biskit Twins the “Biskit Bitches”, but Sue stops him before he can. Apparently, this isn’t the first time it’s happened.

• Delayed Reaction: In "Sweet (Truck) Ride" when Vinnie accidentally steps on Sugar Sprinkles' tail, she holds back her scream of pain until after she asks him not to be offended when it happens.
• Drama Queen: Zoe, full stop. Yes, even in a prose story, she still manages to be quite the ham.
• Dude Looks Like a Lady: That dog that the cast rescue in "Gailbreak!"? Yeah, um, she’s a he.
  • Youngme Song's Aunt Chrissie has a little appearance towards the middle of the first chapter, long before her first major appearance.
• Elevator Failure: Episode 9 revolves around Blythe, Zoe, Pepper, and Minka stuck in the dumbwaiter.
• Everything Trying to Kill You: When Vinnie gets lost in the city in "What Did You Say?", it seems like everything, from the vehicles to the birds to the dogs to the fire hydrant and a little girl, wants to harm him, the rat (Pete) escorting him back to LPS, and their fly companion (Garmin).
• Evil Laugh: Blythe does this in "Penny For Your Laughs" at the end of the first musical number. (Yes, those exist in a prose story, though it’s more reciting lyrics due to the absence of music)

• Failed a Spot Check: Youngmee and Aunt Christie seem to be completely unaware there's a cat living in the back of their truck.
• Fantastic Racism: Sharukh briefly accuses Blythe of this by saying that humans think all mongooses look the same.
• Freudian Slip: In "Blythe's Crush", Blythe keeps slipping in the word "cute" when describing how she bumped into Josh.
• Full-Name Basis: The panda bear is more often than not referred to as "Penny Ling", and rarely ever just "Penny".
• Fun with Acronyms: Inverted. The author finds the Internet acronyms and abbreviations the most annoying part of the show, so they were dropped.

• The Ghost: Raoul the groomer, whom we've only heard speak once, but never actually seen.
• Glass-Shattering Sound: In the most recent chapter (at the time of this writing), the Biskit Twins’ screams are said to be so loud they ALMOST shatter the windows at Sweet Delights.
• Good Scars, Evil Scars: Josh Sharpe has one under his left eye. Supposedly, he got that during one of his dumber stunts.
• Growling Gut: Russell, Vinnie and Zoe are so far the only pets who are prone to this trope. It also happens to Blythe in one episode during a daydream she has.

• Heroic BSoD:
  • Minka gets hit with one in "Bad Hair Day" when she's pressured by the rest of the pets to create art that will propel them all to fame and fortune.
  • Blythe has one in the same chapter after butchering Zoe’s haircut, but it doesn’t last as long.
• Hilarious Outtakes: Parodied in "Sweet (Truck) Ride" when the pets are trying to record a re-enactment of the accident.
• Hippy Teacher: Blythe comes in late for class and gives not being "mentally ready" as an excuse. Mr. Banks responds by making the entire class take a "mental break".
• Huge Schoolgirl: Vi Tannabruzzo, who is said to be the tallest girl in school.
• I Can't Believe It's Not Heroin!: In "Topped With Buttercream", the pets get high on too much sugar. This is way exaggerated with the pets actually showing some symptoms of drug use, like extremely small irises, jitteriness, disorientation, eye twitching, trembling, nausea, strange and aggressive behaviour and hallucinations (though this is partially Truth in Television if you introduce sugar to people who never had it before). Penny Ling even had a straight-on Mushroom Samba. It ends in them dressing in tribal sugar-themed outfits and behaving more or less insane.
• Identical Stranger: Sunil and Shahrukh which leads to a Prince and Pauper story.
• I Just Want to Be Normal: Shahrukh claims he just wants to be treated like a normal person... then makes the pets wait on him hand and foot.
• Ill-Timed Sneeze: Blythe sneezes and gives herself away when she is hiding behind the pets from her father in "Helicopter Dad".
• Insane Troll Logic: In "Bakers and Fakers" when Whittany and Brittany learn the winners will earn half a grade, they come to the conclusion that since there's two of them that's one whole grade for both of them.
• Instant Awesome: Just Add Mecha!: The chapter "Gailbreak!" reveals that the Largest Ever Pet Shop has a high-tech security robot.
• Intoxication Ensues: When the pets go on a sugar binge in "Topped With Buttercream". Penny in particular starts hallucinating.
• Invisible Parents: Owners, anyway. Part of the premise is that the store is a day camp for the pets that their owners leave them at. So far, Zoe's owners are the only ones who make a physical appearance.
• Ironic Name: One of the Biskit twins is named Whittany and has black hair, while the other is named Brittany and has white hair.
• Kitsch Collection: Mrs. Twombly and her antique doorknob collection. Blythe thinks it’s a borderline obsession.
• Lighter and Softer than the author’s usual repertoire, but he still manages to sneak in some more mature themes, such as parental death.
• The Little Shop That Wasn't There Yesterday: The pilot kind of plays up this angle, with Roger remarking that he didn't notice it before, but then again, he wasn’t exactly looking for it.
• Love at First Sight: Though Blythe denies it, it's pretty obvious to Zoe at least that she develops a liking to Josh Sharpe when she meets him in the park.
• Made of Explodium: In the second chapter, Blythe makes Zoe a sweater out of the latter’s spent hair. It explodes when Zoe scratches at it.
• Magic Realism: Apart from Blythe's ability to talk to animals and the occasional cartoony gag, the story is pretty down to earth.
• Missing Mom:
  • Pretty early on (by that we mean about two paragraphs into the first chapter), it’s mentioned that Blythe’s mother died when she was younger thanks to pneumonia brought on by a lung infection.
  • The Biskit Twins' mother is said to have divorced Fisher some years ago.
• Mistaken for Special Guest:
  • One chapter has Blythe being mistaken for a dance show contestant.
  • And in the next chapter, Sunil is mistaken for a movie star.
• Mood Whiplash: "Topped With Buttercream" has the fun (if unrealistic) scenes of the pets pretending they’re on a deserted island juxtaposed with Blythe hoping to free them from the sugar filled kitchen at Sweet Delights so she doesn’t have to go through the same pain she went through when her mother died.
• My God, What Have I Done?:
  • Pepper has this response after one joke at Penny’s expense goes too far.
  • Blythe when she yells at her father for constantly hovering around her for the day.
• Never Heard That One Before: The response to Pepper's joke about a dog's slobber.
• Non-Indicative Name: Normally a pet shop sells pets as well as pet supplies. But since Mrs. Twombly believes that no animal should be in a cage, the store only sells pet food, amenities, and accessories.
  Littlest Pet Shop: We don't sell pets, we cater to them.
• Noodle Incident:
  • Josh Sharpe and his friend are still trying to figure out how the former’s mother mixed his keys in with the Jell-O.
  • And then there's whatever Aunt Chrissie was doing with that chicken she told Youngmee about.
  • Though we don't get many details, we do know that a defanged cobra visited. All we know is that it was a good thing Sunil wasn't there.
• Oh, No... Not Again!:
  • Sunil Nevla says "Not again..." after a failed magic trick blows up in his face and makes his magician hat disintegrate.
  • Blythe says it in "Blythe's Crush" when the person she's trying to return his keys to leaves.
• One-Word Title: "Gailbreak!", "Frenemies", "Grounded" and "Sleeper".
• Out of Focus: Some chapters don’t even feature many of the named characters, mostly the pets.
• Overly Narrow Superlative: In one chapter, Russell imagines getting a trophy for “Best Student Pet Ever”.
• Parental Neglect: In "Helicopter Dad", Roger spends the entire day at Blythe’s school, much to the annoyance of the Biskit Twins and the humor of Blythe's friends. There is a reason though – Roger feels bad for constantly being away from home, so he wants to get the most out of his time with Blythe as he can. Unfortunately, Blythe gets so annoyed at her father that she goes off on him, only to regret it immediately later.
• Pastimes Prove Personality: Blythe and the pets each have one.
  • Blythe: Designing
  • Minka: Painting
  • Penny Ling: Ribbon dancing
  • Pepper: Comedy
  • Russell: Organizing
  • Sunil: Magic tricks
  • Vinnie: Dancing
  • Zoe: Singing
• Performance Anxiety: Blythe when she has to dance on a TV show.

  • Then again, she's not exactly comfortable when placed in front of a camera. Even a simple Kodak makes her freeze up.

  • Minka fakes this at one point to get the other pets to stop pestering her to become a famous artist for their own sakes. It works after a while.
• Place Worse Than Death: The Largest Ever Pet Shop, at least in the eyes of the pets.
• Playing Cyrano: In "Trading Places", Zoe (Who has a large blemish on her nose) asks Penny to talk to her crush Digby for her.
• Poke the Poodle: Fun Russell's zany antics include: switching the positions of two pet beds, not flossing his teeth, and not separating his laundry.
• Poor Communication Kills: Blythe drew the design for her dad's outfit in "Mean Isn't Your Color". Problem? Well, the head on that paper is Penny Ling's.
• Posthumous Character: The case with Blythe's mother, Lauren (aka Betty).
• Predatory Business: Largest Ever Pet Shop.
• Precision F-Strike: Blythe drops the G-Rated version of the F word during her outburst at the Biskit Twins.
• Pseudo-Crisis: In "Dumb Dumbwaiter" Mrs. Twombly locks Penny, Russell, Sunil and Vinnie in a cage, inadvertently hindering their efforts to save their other friends from the dumbwaiter. Penny undoes the latch with her paw just a few seconds later.
• Puppy-Dog Eyes: The pets somehow manage this on Blythe near the end of "Blythe's Big Adventure Part One”. It works.
• Reverse Polarity: Russell claims doing so to a cash register will disable the Biskits' robot. The other pets are a bit incredulous.
• Ridiculously Cute Critter: Blythe more or less refers to them as such in the first chapter.
• The Rival/Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Madame Pom to Zoe.
• Rule of Cute: In the second chapter, Penny wanted to name Minka's art, "Minka Inka". "Because it's cuter!" That and it rhymes.
• Rule of Perception: In the first chapter, Blythe mistakes a dumbwaiter door with a window painted on it for an actual window.
• Rummage Fail: Youngmee's aunt, whenever she needs to get something from her purse. Which isn't helped by her having a small kitchen's worth of tools inside.
• Running Gag:
  • When someone hugs Russell one of his spines gets stuck in their face.
  • Once per chapter with Buttercream, has her spewing insane gibberish, a character saying "what?" her saying "I don't know” while shrugging her shoulders, then follows up with her catchphrase: "Anyhoo..."
• Seinfeldian Conversation: The B plot to "So You Skink You Can Dance" consists of the pets trying to decide where to keep the TV remote.
• Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Vinnie and Sunil often have this dynamic, with Vinnie as the cool and confident manly man, and Sunil as the cute, not very confident sensitive guy.
• Shout-Out:
  • National Geographic, Transformers Prime, Game of Thrones, Petsmart, and Pet Co are all mentioned by name.
  • At one point in the first chapter, Pepper starts talking about hiring Jeff Dunham (whom she refers to as "that guy with the puppets") to help save the pet shop.
  • In one chapter, Sue starts talking about Twilight. Blythe wishes she wouldn't.
  • During one of Penny Ling's inner monologues, she briefly describes Kenny the Shark.
• Silent Snarker: Despite her kind and adorable demeanor, Penny Ling is quite sarcastic with her inner monologue.
• Something We Forgot: At the end of "Books and Covers" Whittany forgets to get Brittany her ointment and she's still locked in the girls' room.
• Sophisticated as Hell: In "Penny for Your Laughs" Whittany and Brittany taste test some lemonade like it's wine.
• So Unfunny, It's Funny: Pepper's Jokes. Incredibly lame but she takes them so seriously you can't help but smile.
• Spoiled Brat: The Biskits.
• Springtime for Hitler: Blythe attempts to get Sue to stop copying her style by wearing mismatching clothes. It fails when everyone loves them.
• Squee: In "Topped With Buttercream", Blythe and Youngmee do this when they learn they'll be working neighbors.
• Stand-Up Comedy: Pepper takes this hobby up when she realized her pudding gags are getting old. It ends up backfiring when one joke at Penny Ling's expense goes a little too far.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
  • Blythe delivers a SCATHING one to the Biskit Twins for insulting Sunil and, more importantly to her, her necklace, which she designed with her mother in mind. Not only were the twins rendered speechless for a moment, even Youngmee was terrified that her friend could explode like that.
    "Gladly," Blythe growled. "But before I do, I have something to say." She walked over to the twins, practically getting into their faces, so close she could count their eyelashes. "Sunil is not a rat! He is a mongoose! And this necklace is not a piece of junk! My father had it made for me when he was in Australia, so it means more to me than you two will ever comprehend! When I designed this necklace, I was thinking about my mother, who – not like you two give a care – died when I was a little kid! So this 'piece of junk', as you call it, means the world to me! But it's not like you know or care about that, since your heads are shoved so far up your backsides that the only things you care about are yourselves! So how about you do me a favor and GET A FREAKING LIFE! Youngmee, pets, we're leaving. Now."
  • And before that, there's the one Zoe delivers to Madam Pom when the latter has really begun to get under her skin.
    "I'll have you know," Zoe screamed, "that I have done plenty of modeling both before and after that show! In fact, if it weren't for me and the other pets, Littlest Pet Shop wouldn't be here right now! Where were you on that one, Madam Pom? Didn't see you there! I didn't see you showcasing Blythe's amazing designs! What, were you too busy getting permed while my favorite store-slash-pet day care was threatened with being closed? You are never anywhere important, never anywhere that needs you! I've watched every dog show on television, and I never saw you in any of them! Not the one for the troops, not the one to benefit that sick little boy, not one! So thank you, Miss I Only Do What Benefits Me, but I do NOT need the advice of someone like you!" She turned away, snarling and growling under her breath.
• Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Vinnie is the smallest of the pets while Penny Ling is the largest, and the two are good friends.
• Totally Radical: As said earlier, the use of Internet acronyms and abbreviations was dropped due to the author’s annoyance with them.
• Uncle Pennybags: Mr. Biskit is rich, but also said to be a pretty nice guy.
• Unstoppable Rage:
  • Sunil after Blythe tells him to see everything as cobras in "Gailbreak!".
  • And Penny Ling in "Mean Isn't Your Color". As the flavor text puts it, "An angry Penny Ling was a scary Penny Ling".
  • And Vinnie at the beginning of "So You Skink You Can Dance".
• Vague Age:
  • Averted, as Blythe and her friends are explicitly said to be 16.
  • Mrs. Twombly is said to be in her late 60's, at most.
