The SSSP

The very first defense team in the Ultra Series, SSSP, short for "Science Special Search-Party", and also known as the "Science Patrol", is a global organization established by Professor Ichinotani after the events of Ultra Q to deal with the increasing number of kaiju and aliens. Like all attack teams after them, they specialize in investigating strange phenomenon involving monsters and aliens, acting as the front line in the event of a monster or alien attack, using advanced technology and hi-tech vehicles, while supporting Ultraman when necessary.

As a whole

  • Badass Crew: While Ultraman ends up saving the day for them more often than not, they do have their fair share of moments every now and then. Notably, they have by far the most direct kaiju and alien kills of any Ultra Series defense team.
  • Dub Name Change: Science Patrol is actually their English dub name. In the original Japanese, they were called the SSSP (Science Special Search Party). Nevertheless, Science Patrol has stuck with fans.
  • True Companions: They're pretty much like a family, except that they fight giant monsters.

Original Team

    Shin Hayata / Ultraman I

Shin Hayata

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shinhayataanime.png

Portrayed by: Susumu Kurobe
Voiced by: Takayuki Sugo (Japanese, Motion Comic); Hideyuki Tanaka (Japanese, Anime); Fred Tatasciore (English), Gonzalo Rojas (Latin American Spanish)
The human host of Ultraman. Hayata is a sincere young man who always tries to do what's right before anything else. He is able to transform into Ultraman by using the Beta Capsule.
  • Amnesiac Hero: After Ultraman left him, he forgot everything about his time as the Giant of Light's host up until Shinjiro and Ide jogged his memories.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: Known to be the Japanese Defense Minister and a major figure in the SSSP.
  • Badass Normal: Hayata has no special powers besides being able to put "Monster Extermination Specialist" on his business cards.
  • The Cape: As far as you could reasonably expect a public servant to be. (Later shows have the protagonist be a bit more human, and fallible.)
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: Somewhat obviously, he's modeled after the actor who played him in the original series, Susumu Kurobe, down to wearing the same kind of glasses in the manga.
  • Composite Character: His second Ultraman suit has a chestplate design not unlike Ultraman Zoffy's. This is downplayed by the fact that Ultraman Zoffy is implied to exist somewhere in this universe since the events of Ultraman still occurred.
  • Cool Old Guy: 60 years old and still kicking ass.
  • Dented Iron: Shin's still a badass, but his powers have weakened due to his age.
  • Experienced Protagonist: Known as the first Ultraman in his younger days with the SSSP.
  • Henshin Hero: There were others, but he and Ultraman codified it.
  • The Hero: He is the one who turns into Ultraman, after all!
  • Living Legend: His younger days as Ultraman have earned him fame and many of the people still recognize him as a hero in the present day.
  • Nice Guy: Hayata believes in doing what's right first and foremost and is on good terms with all his teammates.
  • Number Two: He typically takes over leadership of Science Patrol when Muramatsu is unavailable.
  • Papa Wolf: He will destroy anyone who threatens his son.
  • Powered Armor: He intervenes in Bemular's attempt to kill his son wearing a black suit of powered armor that gives him a slight resemblance to an Ultra, but isn't quite enough to let him beat an actual Giant of Light.
  • Powers via Possession: Shin was the host of the original Ultraman, and still has superhuman strength and durability from his time as the alien's host, which he then passed on to Shinjiro.
  • Sharing a Body: Implied to be the case with him and Ultraman. In a discussion with Mefilas, the alien, confused as to whether Hayata or Ultraman is speaking, asks him if he is an Earthling or an alien, to which Hayata says that he is both.
  • Sizeshifter: In his younger days as Ultraman and as the alien's host, Shin was able to change his size to a larger stature to fight the giant monsters who attacked the city.

    Captain Toshio Muramatsu

Captain Toshio Muramatsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/muramatsu.png
Portrayed by: Akiji Kobayashi
The leader of Science Patrol. Captain Muramatsu is a very serious and intelligent man with an aura of fatherly respect and wisdom.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Human Specimens 5 and 6", and he's one of the title specimens being hunted down by Dada.
  • A Father to His Men: His relationship with the team, particularly Arashi and Ide.
  • The Captain: The original example of the Ultra Series.
  • Colonel Badass: While Dada is in no way Ultraman's most powerful enemy, it takes a lot of guts for a regular human to punch him.
  • Distinguished Gentleman's Pipe: Can be seen smoking one in a few episodes.
  • Dub Name Change: In the English dub, his surname is shortened to just "Mura".
  • The Lancer: Although the leader of the Science Patrol, he essentially fills this role to Hayata.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's shown to be the most level-headed person at any military meeting discussing how to deal with kaiju and aliens, usually suggesting the one that's least likely to make things worse — something he also carries onto his team.

Daisuke Arashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arashi_5.png
Portrayed by: Sandayu Dokumamushi (credited as "Iyoshi Ishii")
The best shot on the team, Arashi seems like a typical trigger-happy "tough guy" at first, but underneath is a caring and loyal personality. He wields the Spider-Shot, a two-handed laser rifle that can do more damage than the typical Science Patrol ray gun.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Don't Shoot, Arashi!"
  • The Big Guy: Of Science Patrol, due to his love of taking the first shot with the biggest gun of the team.
  • Friend to All Children: He's shown to have a soft spot for kids and cares a lot about their well-being.
  • Hand Cannon: His weapon of choice, the Spider-Shot (or Gamma-Ray Gun in the dub), a powerful two-handed laser rifle.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although prone to shooting before asking questions, Arashi really is a good guy who tries to do what's right.
  • Trigger-Happy: His defining trait is his tendency to enthusiastically take the first shot at the Monster of the Week without consideration, which once got him into trouble against the kaiju Zaragas.

Mitsuhiro Ide

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ide.png
Portrayed by: Masanari Nihei
Voiced by: Ken Uo (Japanese); Brian Palermo (English), Harold Leal (Latin American Spanish)
The brains of Science Patrol. Ide is a lovable goofball who comes up with all sorts of genius inventions to help Science Patrol take on whatever monster is terrorizing Japan in the episode.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The subplot of "The Small Hero" sheds some light on his feelings towards Ultraman.
  • Butt-Monkey: A lot of the slapstick in the show happens to him. He's been smacked in the face by Arashi, had his foot stamped on, broken his leg, bonked his head, and a lot more.
  • Cool Old Guy: In ULTRAMAN, Ide's an outgoing and friendly man, as well as an uncle figure towards Shinjiro.
  • Ditzy Genius: Despite his ability to come up with all sorts of marvelous inventions for Science Patrol, he tends to be rather clownish and immature at times.
  • Dub Name Change: "Ide" becomes "Ito" in the English dub.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Designs all sorts of cool inventions to help against the Monster of the Week.
  • Living Legend: One of the original members of the SSSP, but not known as well as his friend Shin.
  • Mission Control: He assists the Ultramen by mapping out their missions and analyzing their suits status and limiters.
  • Missing Mom: It's revealed in "The Phantom Snow Mountain" that he lost his mom when he was young.
  • Mr. Fixit: He also has the job of repairing the V-TOLs after battles.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: He's pretty goofy compared to the rest of Science Patrol.
  • The Smart Guy: Of Science Patrol, since he's the guy who makes most of their weaponry.

    Akiko Fuji

Akiko Fuji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fuji.png
Portrayed by: Hiroko Sakurai
The only woman on the Science Patrol, Fuji usually stays on base as the communications officer. Although, she can be somewhat naive at times, she is the most levelheaded and warmhearted member of the team.
  • A Day in the Limelight: "Pearl Oyster Defense", one of the few episodes where she gets to participate more than usual in the episode's monster hunt.
  • Bridge Bunnies: And she would codify it for many years to come, though she does get a few opportunities to join the men on the field.
  • The Heart: Of Science Patrol, being the sole female member and the kindest of the group.
  • Mission Control: Her usual job is to take in and deliver transmissions for Science Patrol.
  • Nice Girl: She's the most reasonable member of the team after Hayata and also the nicest of them.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Another trope she would codify for the Ultra Series in the many years to come.

    Isamu Hoshino

Isamu Hoshino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hoshino.png
Portrayed by: Akihide Tsuzawa
An ll-year-old boy who idolizes the Science Patrol and dreams of becoming a full-fledged member of the organization one day. Although he can be troublesome sometimes, he gets to tag along on their adventures. In the English dub, he is Fuji's younger brother.
  • Ascended Fanboy: His many adventures with Science Patrol are eventually awarded in "Passport to Infinity" when he is made a full-fledged member of the team, complete with his own uniform.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Disappears after "The Dreaded Comet Tsuiphon" due to Akihide Tsuzawa having to drop out after breaking his leg in a skiing accident. Child characters in subsequent episodes, like Satoru, were originally roles meant to be filled by Hoshino.
  • Dub Name Change: Due to his relationship with Fuji being changed to her sibling in the English dub, he becomes Hoshino Fuji instead.
  • Related in the Adaptation: As already mentioned, he's Fuji's younger brother in the English dub. Although quite fitting, given the two's relationship, the problem is that Fuji is later established to have a little brother in the Mefilas episode.
  • Tagalong Kid: He often gets to join Science Patrol on their adventures, but has also been helpful against the Monster of the Week on a few occasions.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: He's shown to be quite sensible and mature for an eleven-year-old boy.

    Dr. Iwamoto

Dr. Iwamoto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dr_iwamoto.png
Portrayed by: Akihiko Hirata
A scientist who recurs throughout the show as Science Patrol's primary expert for scientific consultation, first appearing in the fifth episode.
  • Expy: Fills in the role that Professor Ichinotani did for Ultra Q. Iwamoto also had a number of his own expies in the show whenever his actor wasn't available. Many of these shared similar surnames like Yamamoto or Miyamoto.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Asides from creating the team's Jet V-TOL, he's developed many other inventions for Science Patrol, including the rocket boosters needed to let the Jet V-TOL to perform space travel.
  • The Professor: His role for Science Patrol. He also designed their Jet V-TOL.

New Team

    Shinjiro Hayata / Ultraman II

Shinjiro Hayata/Ultraman

Click here to see his Ultraman suit
Voiced by: Ryōhei Kimura (Japanese); Josh Hutcherson (English), Daniel Cruz (Latin American Spanish)

The protagonist and new Ultraman.

  • All-Loving Hero: Shinjiro cares for the well being of the innocent and even when he must fight his enemies, he still shows empathy for them. Just don't push him to the brink of anger. See Berserk Button below.
  • Berserk Button: Never hurt an innocent or anyone close in front of Shinjiro or he will go into a rage-filled state. Bemular learned this the hard way.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: As Ultraman, Shinjiro uses the Specium Blades, a pair of energy blades underneath his forearms to use slashing attacks or to deflect projectiles such as lasers.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: Shinjiro wants to help people, human or alien, but is often plagued by doubts over his performance as Ultraman and whether or not he's doing the right thing.
  • Deadly Disc: The Specium Slash are a pair of energy rings that can be used in hand or thrown to slash through things, similar to the classic Ultraman's special attack Ultra Slash.
  • Does Not Know His Own Strength: Shinjiro's attempts to stop a bully from harassing Rena Sayama end up with the bully's leg being broken unintentionally since the bully tried to kick Shinjiro, only for Shinjiro to catch his leg and accidentally crushed it, sending the bully to the hospital and in a cast afterwards.
  • Expy: Of Daigo Madoka, both having similar backstories of being descendants of Ultramen and both sharing a Love Interest named Rena.
  • Flying Brick: Was born with Super-Strength, Super-Toughness and later develops Flight
  • Good Feels Good: After saving a civilian from a fuel tanker car accident during his trial run as Ultraman, he starts to accept and enjoy the feeling of being the new Ultraman, saving and protecting the people in need. After all, his father, the original Ultraman, was his inspiration to becoming a hero.
  • Heart Light: The Color Timer, a traditional piece that applies to many Ultramen. Shinjiro wears this on his suit and it can indicate when the suit's Specium energy levels are running low and glows when his limiters are released.
  • Martial Pacifist: As Ultraman, he tries to reason with his enemies rather than jumping straight into battle. Moroboshi scolds at him for this.
  • Nice Guy: Shinjiro is a genuinely friendly guy since childhood who stands up to protect the innocent and to fight for what's right.
  • Power Source: Shinjiro uses Specium, a natural energy source from his body's Ultraman Factor, as the power source to activate the Ultraman suit.
  • Powered Armor: Unlike his father's Ultraman form, Shinjiro's Ultraman suit is an advanced suit of powered armor developed by the SSSP and designed to tap into his Ultraman Factor.
  • Saying Too Much: He almost lets slip to Rena that he's Ultraman, twice, barely catching himself the first time and doing a poor job of trying to deny it. The second time, he catches sight of Moroboshi shooting him a Death Glare and quickly clams up. However, Rena becomes suspicious and figures it out when he says he's going to call Ultraman but forgets his phone.
  • Superman Substitute: To a point. Shinjiro's honestly got more in common with Superboy, being a half human son of Ultraman with similar, if weaker abilities, but also still a Flying Brick.
  • Superpowerful Genetics: Shinjiro inherited his father's abilities.
  • Super Mode: When Shinjiro releases the limiters in his Ultraman suit, he is able to use the powers of his Ultraman Factor to its fullest extent, allowing him to reach incredible speeds and gain greater strength, also enhancing his special moves. It even gives him a Power Up Full Color Change, making his Ultraman suit give a red glowing effect.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Shinjiro's Ultra Beam is called the Spectrum Ray, a laser blast of energy that is activated from his forearms.

    Dan Moroboshi / Seven

Dan Moroboshi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dananime_8.png
Click here to see his Ultraseven suit
Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (Japanese); Liam O'Brien (English), Didier Rojas (Latin American Spanish)

A high ranking SSSP agent as well as Shinjiro's handler.

  • Anti-Hero: Moroboshi is one of the good guys, but also very cynical in his job as Ultraseven.
  • Badass Boast: Moroboshi says these to some of his opponents.
(Episode 6) "Oh come on, you're joking right, that wasn't really maximum power, was it?"
(Episode 13) "When I said you could actually fight, I wasn't saying you could actually win."
  • Badass Normal: Unlike the other Ultras, Dan doesn't have any innate superpowers and must rely on Powered Armor in combat.
  • Clean Cut: Moroboshi's experience with the sword allows him to cut through his opponents with ease.
  • The Cowl: While he's not an Ineffectual Loner, his use of gadgets and non-powered status make him come off as the Batman to Shinjiro's inexperienced Superman Substitute.
  • Death Glare: Moroboshi constantly sports a stern scowl, but when he catches Shinjiro almost letting slip to Rena that he's Ultraman his glare is so intense that Shinjiro interprets it as a furious rant and is intimidated into clamming up.
  • Flash Step: His Ultraseven suit is fast enough to zoom past opponents and use a swift single slash from his sword to disarm his opponents in battle.
  • General Ripper: He is a firm believer that the only way to stop an alien from being a threat is to kill the alien, and you're an idiot if you believe otherwise.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's subtle, but there's more than a few hints that he's honestly jealous of Shinjiro's abilities.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Sure, he's one of the Ultramen and he fights to protect the Earth, but that doesn't mean he'll show mercy to the enemies that threaten the planet and its inhabitants.
  • Good Is Not Nice: While he has good intentions, he's very blunt and strict towards Shinjiro as a newcomer to the SSSP organization.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: He's so distraught at the realization that his twin brother is dead that after the New York arc, he takes the anger over his loss out on the Leo Brothers. Just as he has both of them at his mercy, however, he slowly realizes that Vengeance Feels Empty and he would be no better than the aliens who took his brother if he did the same to Leo by killing Astra. He has a change of heart when the Star Cluster Council unleashes Nova to kill the Leo Brothers and Adad and decides to embrace being an Ultraman, starting off by saving Astra's life and preventing a repeat of his brother's death for someone else.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Dan's weapon of choice is a specium-powered katana.
  • Human Aliens: It's later revealed that Dan is an alien and that his species just happens to look like humans.
  • Jerkass: Reflecting Seven's personality in Ultraman Leo and the darkness of his own home series. That said, the original Seven was not quite this vengeful.
  • Literal-Minded:
    • When Seiji calls him and Shinjiro his "brothers", he assumes Seiji is indeed Shinjiro's sibling only to then believe he's his when Shinjiro denies it.
    • Happens again when Leo and Astra call him "bro", leading to him thinking they're considering him their brother now.
  • Master Swordsman: His skill with Japanese swordsmanship is such that he can win a Single-Stroke Battle with a superhumanly-strong alien mercenary, without the alien even realizing he was mortally wounded.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: He wears a pair of glasses and is shown to possess a high level of intelligence and leadership.
  • The Stoic: He's very serious about his job and doesn't show much emotion. Becomes Not So Stoic when someone or something angers him.
  • Sword Beam: His specium katana is able to produce beams from the blade with a single slash.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dan constantly chastises Shinjiro on his hesitation and unwillingness to kill.

    Seiji Hokuto / Ace

Seiji Hokuto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/seijianime.png
Click here to see his Ultra Ace suit
Voiced by: Megumi Han (Japanese); Gunnar Sizemore (English), Sergio Barbosa (Latin American Spanish)

A young man who wants to join forces with the other Ultraman.

  • Ambiguously Bi: He's had feelings for an alien girl named Yuko since childhood, but his conversations with Shinjiro border on flirtation.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Seiji is actually an amputee, his arms being prosthetics that constantly get damaged.
  • Anti-Hero: Seiji is a mostly decent kid and sides with the heroes, but he isn't afraid to use shadier methods such as blackmail and petty theft in order to support his operation.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Normally he's friendly in a way, but he's not above giving evil-doers and villains a pummeling and taking their money as his income.
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: Funds his operations by extorting criminals.
  • Break the Haughty: Twice, first in a subdued way when Moroboshi cuts off his arm during a fight. Later on, when he faces Ace Killer and quickly has him lose his composture and smugness and his confidence thrown down the drain courtesy of Ace Killer and his minions putting him through a rather nasty Curb-Stomp Battle and following with a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
  • Character Development: The Seiji of earlier volumes was known to preach to Shinjiro about the necessities of a hero needing to get their hands dirty. Seiji by Volume 15 has very vocal objections to the Leo Brothers being willing to let a hostage die in order to get to an enemy.
  • Curtains Match the Window: His golden eye color matches with his blonde hair.
  • Cyborg: All of Seiji's limbs were amputated and replaced with prosthetics derived from the Ultra suits.
  • Decomposite Character: In that Ultraman Ace is just Seiji, not a fusion of him and Yuko Minami.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Don't let his innocent looks fool you. He can get serious when he wants to. Even he's aware of the fact that others view him as weak due to his physical appearance, which he uses to hide his true nature and trick his opponents when he's not in his Ultraman suit.
  • Jump Jet Pack: Seiji's Ultraman Ace suit is equipped with thrusters in his back that allow him to jump high, but can't keep him flying in the air for too long.
  • Laser Blade: Wields Specium Blades like Shinjiro, but Seiji's blades form together to create a long inward blade for slashing through enemies that dare to charge at him.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: The shortest of the Ultramen and is able to handle many fights all on his own.
  • Powered Armor: Unlike Shinjiro and Dan's suits, Seiji's Ultraman Ace armor is jury-rigged and not made by the SSSP, but the alien mechanic Yapool.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Against those responsible for the death of his family.
  • Smug Snake: Despite being one of the good guys he counts, being very haughty and condescending towards both Shinjiro and Moroboshi, believing he's the superior Ultraman. Then Shinjiro manages to hold his own against him, and his fight with Moroboshi is an utter Curb-Stomp Battle in the latter's favor. He doesn't take it well.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Gives one to Ace Killer after slicing off one of his arms.
Seiji: "Now you're gonna pay for what you've done! For taking the lives of everyone on that plane! For destroying Yuko's happiness! You murdering scum!" *Points at Ace Killer* "Your life won't begin to make up for all that, but you're gonna pay anyway!"
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Shinjiro, Moroboshi, and two squads of SSSP agents mobolize to back him up against Ace Killer 's group at the behest of a worried Yapool, but Seiji actually spots them and sits back so they can spring the likely ambush for him. The SSSP agents are all killed, and Shinjiro and Moroboshi end up being tortured for their trouble, while Seiji smugly remaks that that's what they deserve for sticking their noses into his business.
  • Vigilante Man: Administers rough justice on criminals, be they human or alien. And takes their money if they're loaded.

    Jack

Jack

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jackanime.png
Click here to see his Ultraman suit
Voiced by: Ryota Takeuchi (Japanese); Robbie Daymond (English), Oscar F. Gomez (Latin American Spanish)
A resident of a hidden alien city who acts as Moroboshi's informant.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Jack is a much more duplicitous and morally ambiguous character than Ultraman Jack.
  • Ambiguously Human: It's not clear if he's a Human Alien or not, just that he appears normal but has enough strength to punch out an alien twice as big as him in a fight.
  • The Big Guy: He's unnaturally strong, and it's taken further by his own Ultraman suit which is built like a tank.
  • Double Reverse Quadruple Agent: His moral ambiguity is highlighted when he sends a vengeful giant alien after Shinjiro in order to force him to fight, and the final episode implies he's working for the Star Cluster Alliance when he abducts Yapool and takes out the SSSP agents guarding him.

    Kotaro "Taro" Higashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kotaro_8.png
Click here to see the Ultraman of New York
Click here to see his Ultraman suit
A photographer who unexpectedly acquires superpowers and decides to be New York's Ultraman.
  • Beta Outfit: His first costume was a spandex throwback to Ultraman Taro's original appearance. After Dave's death, he abandons the superhero identity and is now normally a nude human engulfed in fire with two fans of flames on his head being nods to Taro's iconic horns. He later gets his own Powered Armor that's more reminiscent of the classic Ultraman Taro.
  • Break the Cutie: He was an optimistic photojournalist who was thrilled to be gifted superpowers so he can properly dish out justice. Eventually, his best friend ends up being killed due to his activities as New York's Ultraman and he becomes much more vengeful and cynical as a result.
  • Camera Fiend: His initial attempts to dish out justice was as a photojournalist.
  • Hot-Blooded: Matching with his pyrokinetic powers, Taro shows himself as fairly dramatic and eager to kick the asses of those he deems deserve it, which ends up earning Valky's attraction towards him.
  • Playing with Fire: His primary ability is to engulf himself in flames.
  • Ship Tease: With Valky after she kisses him after their fight.
  • That Man Is Dead: Following Dave's death, Kotaro now refers to himself as "Taro."

    Leo Brothers

Leo and Astra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leo_brothers_manga.jpg
From left to right: Astra and Leo
Click here to see their "original" forms
The Star Cluster Council's elite assassins, later joining the SSSP after they are deemed no longer of use to the Star Cluster.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Much more so than the other Ultramen in the series. Those other characters have the excuse of undergoing Adaptational Species Change to become either regular humans or Human Aliens that have no connection to the actual Ultramen in this universe. Leo and Astra however have kept their origins as aliens hailing from Planet L77 but are no longer Ultramen-like beings.
  • Adaptational Villainy: They're the Star Cluster Council's elite assassins and display contempt for any illegal aliens of any kind. It gets downplayed once they are humbled by the battle with Nova and join the SSSP out of gratitude for Moroboshi saving them.
  • Animal Motifs: Much like their original counterparts, they have lion themes. Leo especially.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: They genuinely care about each other as brothers and are outright inseparable.
  • Decoy Antagonist: The Hong Kong arc introduces them as the Arc Villains hunting down Adad and the enemies Moroboshi fights. They are quickly defeated when Moroboshi turns the tide and are dethroned as the arc's main antagonist by Nova, who is literally a much bigger threat that threatens to flatten the entire sector of Hong Kong for the Leo Brothers' failure to kill Adad.
  • Heel–Face Turn: They start off as antagonists but after Moroboshi saves their lives from Nova, they join the SSSP. And in high contrast to their behavior when we first meet them, they are pretty cordial and chummy with the people they've decided to work with.
  • Horned Humanoid: Leo's "original" form, which takes directly after his Ultraman design.
  • Human Aliens: Downplayed. They have Pointy Ears, wild Anime Hair, fangs, and claws, but resemble humans enough for Rena to not notice anything off about them. Their default appearances are also not how they actually look.
  • I Owe You My Life: Their gratitude to Moroboshi for saving their lives makes them switch sides and join the SSSP.
  • Last of Their Kind: Like their original counterparts, they are the sole survivors of Planet L77.
  • Saying Too Much: Much worse about it than Shinjiro, though to be fair it seems that nobody bothered to tell them that the SSSP's operations are supposed to be secret and the museum is a front, causing them to accidentally reveal Moroboshi's full name and connection to the place to Rena.
  • Super Mode: They have "original forms" that they seem to want to actively avoid using. These forms more directly harken back to their original Ultraman designs.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: They are quickly marked for elimination when they fail to kill Adad, causing the Council to send Nova after them. Edo later acquits them of their bounty.

    Edo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/edoanime.png
Voiced by: Shigeru Ushiyama (Japanese); D.C. Douglas (English), Giovanni Cruz (Latin American Spanish)
A surviving member of the Zetton alien race, and a liaison for the Universe Alliance Council.
  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: He speaks in a very disjointed unnatural tone.
  • Aliens Speaking English: Justified with that extremely thick and off-putting accent of his.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He's dressed in a three-piece suit when Shinjiro first meets him.
  • Cyclops: Like other Zetton aliens, he only has one eye.
  • Evil All Along: It's revealed that the Star Cluster Alliance Council — who Edo is revealed to be the High Chairman of — were behind the plane explosion, framing Bemular, Yapool seems to know who he is and panics when he sees him.
  • Perpetual Expression: Zig-Zagged. While he appears to remain with a single expression due to his lack of a mouth and a single eye, there's apparently a way to "read" his facial movements to know what he's feeling at a time.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He berates Black Directive for his excessive and impractical attempt to silence the Leo Brothers through Bioweapon Nova and decides to lift the bounty on them and Adad to let bygones be bygones for the time being.
  • The Unmasqued World: His agenda includes the exposure of aliens living amongst humans.
  • Vocal Dissonance: His voice alternates between being deep and very deep. This is especially more accentuated in the Latin American Spanish dub, as a result of his voice actor's Colombian accent.
