Main Characters

Tropes applying to both Ethan and Emily
  • Single-Minded Twins: Despite Ethan's interests being very different from Emily's, Ethan sees how her interests benefit his own, and thus very rarely disagrees with his sister. It even scares Emily when she and Ethan actually disagree on something and start fighting, as it's serious business for them.
  • Theme Twin Naming: Both of their names begin with E.
    Ethan Tuttle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ethan_61.png
Voiced by: Jonny Vance

One of the titular twins, Ethan has a love of sweets and limited edition collector's toys, and an appreciation for the science that makes them. He's also quite ambitious, wanting to start his own business and make it big.

    Emily Tuttle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emily_77.png
Voiced by:
Alex Hall (season 1 episodes 1-5)
Sara Johnson (season 1 episodes 6-9; season 2 episode 1)
Kelsey Maher (season 1 episodes 10-12; season 2 episode 2)

The other twin, Emily is a huge science nerd with a strong sense of adventure and justice.

  • Achilles' Heel: Science. She freely admits this in the cold open of the first episode.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Emily's hair was originally blonde in the books. Here it's brown.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has brown hair, loves science and is very intelligent.
  • Brutally Honest: When told by Frederic Bastiat that she has the right to say what she wants, the first thing she says is that he should wear deodorant.
  • Fangirl: Has a poster of Albert Einstein, but he's depicted as being especially muscular and attractive.
  • Nerd Glasses: Sports a pair of these and is extremely intelligent, on par with her grandmother, a certified genius.
  • The Other Darrin: She keeps changing voice actors. She's had three so far.
  • The Smart Girl: Emily is a science and tech genius, just like her grandmother.

     Grandma Gabby Santos-Jones

Grandma Gabby on her wheelchair
"Vamonos! We have places to go, people to see, communists to offend!"
Voiced by: William Lucas

A Cuban American something-aire with a Ph. D. in physics, Grandma Gabby lives with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. She's a physicist and inventor who has a time traveling wheelchair and a lust for adventure and causing problems for communists.

  • Alliterative Name: Grandma Gabby
  • Bait-and-Switch: She's very fond of these.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Gabby personally knows many historical figures, including Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, Adam Smith and Annie Turnbo Malone. She has also given several of them bits and pieces of advice.
  • Break the Fourth Wall: Uses this skill liberally.
  • Cool Old Lady: In spades. Her very first night after moving in with her daughter's family, Gabby uses an acetylene welding torch to make some finishing touches to her time traveling wheelchair before blasting off on an adventure with her grandkids.
  • Crossdressing Voices: Gabby is voiced by William Lucas.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Gabby's family fled Cuba to escape communism. Gabby is still saddened by the state of her homeland.
    • In "Fight for the Future," it's revealed that Gabby was initially embittered by her childhood struggles, and became a totalitarian dictator herself immediately after inventing her first time machine. It took discovering that she'd nearly brainwashed her own future grandchildren to stop her in her tracks and make her choose another path.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Not even her grandkids are safe from her savagery.
Emily: Grandma, what if our customers see her [Queen Elizabeth I in the present day]?
Gabby: For that you'd need customers.
  • Fiction 500: Gabby is "something that rhymes with [millionaire]." In one episode, she's seen offering $3 trillion in American money, claiming it's all the cash she has on hand. It's never stated how much she's worth, but she very well may be the richest animated character since Scrooge McDuck. Unlike Scrooge, however, Gabby is implied to have come by at least some of her wealth by less than moral means. She is very ashamed of this.
  • Goth: One of her hobbies is to shop at Hot Gothic and dress up in stereotypically goth outfits.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Gabby and her daughter both have a habit of peppering their speech with Spanish words and phrases. Gabby often refers to her grandkids as "mijos."
  • Hairstyle Inertia: Keeps the exact same hairstyle from childhood all the way through to the present day.
  • Handicapped Badass: Has limited mobility and relies on a wheelchair, but still isn't afraid to pick fights with communists or take down cattle rustlers. She and her wheelchair are both wanted in Cuba.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She was a villain in her 20s, becoming the dictator of a futuristic totalitarian regime. She had a change of heart after seeing her future self interacting with her grandchildren.
  • I Hate Past Me: When she was 25, Gabby took over a society in the year 3000. Present-day Gabby is deeply ashamed of this, and confronts her younger self on it.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Brags that despite her flaws, she was still beautiful in her youth.
  • MacGyvering: Tricked out her wheelchair to be a time and interdimensional space machine using a carbon alloy and the clip that holds bread bags closed.
  • Overly Long Name: Gabriela Vela Nueve de los Santos Ron Pablo Jones. Justified in that it's a Hispanic name. Sort of.
  • Rags to Riches: She started out a poor girl growing up in communist Cuba. But when she came to America, she became a physicist and inventor, becoming rich in the process.
Ethan: Grandma, are you a millionaire?
  • Super Wheelchair: Her rocket-powered wheelchair doublespeak as a time machine, and has a bunch of extra features.
  • Trickster Mentor: Will often put her grandkids in dire situations to force them to learn a lesson. Usually this involves the wheelchair's "knowledge juice" conveniently running out, trapping them wherever they happen to be at the time.
  • Weight Woe: 25-year-old Gabby worries about "surrendering to...cookies" and calls her future self "gorda" (fat).

    Derek the Raccoon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tuttletwinsderek_0.jpg
Voiced by: Alex Elkin

Grandma Gabby's pet raccoon, Derek takes the nickname "trash panda" to an illogical extreme, consuming just about any non-food item on sight.

  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Derek is a purple raccoon.
  • Amplified Animal Aptitude: Derek can understand human language, and can even speak with a posh English accent when he drinks the knowledge juice. But normally his speech consists of annoyed chittering (sometimes subtitled). It turns out his intelligence is because he's not a normal Earth raccoon.
  • Anachronistic Animal: Gabby adopted Derek in Cuba. Raccoons were extirpated from Cuba in the 17th century. This is justified in the season two finale when it's revealed Derek is actually from another planet entirely and was sent to Earth to be kept safe.
  • Diurnal Nocturnal Animal: Justified. Since Derek is a time traveler, his circadian rhythm aligns with whatever the plot requires. It's unclear when or if he sleeps.
  • Drives Like Crazy: For some reason, Gabby lets him.
  • Extreme Omnivore: From art supplies to popcorn bowls, Derek eats just about anything in sight.
  • I Am Not Weasel: Derek occasionally gets mistaken for a rodent. He finds this very offensive.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: He is Grandma Gabby's pet.
  • Replacement Goldfish: The kids witness a flashback of young Gabby adopting a raccoon and naming him Derek—in the 1940s. When they question how old Derek is, Gabby admits that she's had many "Dereks" over the years. Though this does get retconned in season two, making Derek a Long-Lived species of alien raccoon for whom 80 is still considered young.

    Karinne Karmichael
"It's kah-REEN!"
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tuttletwinskarrine.jpg
Voiced by: Natalie Madsen

The 12-year-old (now former) president of the Cul-de-sac Kids Club, Karinne takes her role very seriously and won't let anyone forget it. She considers herself entitled to things produced by the kids club, and very vocally admits to disagreeing with the Tuttle Twins just for the sake of disagreeing with them. However, she does have some redeeming qualities, and is willing to work with the twins when absolutely necessary to achieve common goals.

  • All Elections Are Serious Business: Both Karinne and her parents treat her campaign for reelection as president of the kids club this way.
  • Alliterative Name: Karinne Karmichael
  • Alpha Bitch: She is president of the Cul-de-sac Kids Club and often antagonizes the titular duo.
  • Anti-Villain: She's an outspoken antagonist to the twins, but is also compassionate toward animals and has a strong sense of justice—mainly when it benefits her. She's also willing to listen and learn when the twins explain to her how changing her actions benefits everyone, including herself.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Hates Big Bob, the owner of a local restaurant franchise, for making it illegal to run her corn dog stand—and also for wearing white shoes after Labor Day.
  • Berserk Button: Do not mispronounce her name.
  • Cassandra Truth: Every time she tries to expose Grandma Gabby's time traveling shenanigans, no one believes her.
  • Evil Laugh: Indulges in this frequently.
  • Evil Redhead: Played with. Karinne is regularly antagonistic, but swings back and forth between full on villain and anti-villain. Her parents, however, seem to play this trope straight.
  • Freudian Excuse: The main source of her antagonistic behavior is her parents' expectations. She literally has to earn her place as "daughter of the year," and will lose it to the dog if she doesn't become the villain they want her to be.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She borders on neighborhood bully, but Karinne does have a compassionate side to her, and considers raising money for a local animal shelter to be one of the most important things her kids club will ever do.
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Karinne’s face looks very similar to that of Natalie Madsen, her voice actor. It certainly helps that they are both redheads.
  • The Mole: She's working for some kind of secret organization that is trying to capture Grandma Gabby.
  • My Nayme Is: Her name is an alternate spelling and pronunciation of Karen, and she will correct you if you mispronounce it.
  • Nepotism: Triggers hyper-inflation at a carnival run by her uncle because he allows her to keep printing prize tickets, causing their value to depreciate and necessitating price markups.
  • Promoted to Opening Titles: While she's previously had some clips in the Season 1 opening, Season 2's opening officially bills her as a main character.
  • Villainous Crush: While she's more of an anti-villain, she also a crush on Ethan, even though she can't stand having to agree with him.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: She has it almost as bad as Azula.

    Copernicus
  • Cheerful Child: He seems unable to comprehend any emotion other than happiness.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Appears to have no idea what's actually going on around him at any given time.
  • The Ditz: Possibly the most unintelligent character in the show for the sake of comic relief.
  • Dumb Blonde
  • Expy: According to Daniel Harmon, Copernicus was made to be similar to other characters like Soos Ramirez from Gravity Falls and Ralph Wiggum from The Simpsons.
  • Fat Idiot: He's an overweight child who isn't all that intelligent.
  • Fearless Fool: He can't swim, but chants excitedly along with rival campers when they're preparing to throw him in the lake. He also acts very nonchalant about the fact that he has a deadly peanut allergy.
  • Genius Ditz: Is shown to be very knowledgeable of wildlife and an expert at communicating with them. He claims it's because he was partially raised by squirrels out in the woods.
  • Ironic Name: His name is Copernicus, but his project for science camp is a solar system with a flat earth at its center.
  • Promoted to Opening Titles: While he's previously had a brief clip in the Season 1 opening, Season 2's opening officially bills him as a main character.

The Cul-De-Sac Kids Club

    In General
    Ivy Rebecca Ashley Jackson
    Kevin Andrew Lee
  • No Indoor Voice: He almost never speaks in a normal tone, as he says most of his lines loudly and shouts on a regular basis. This is even lampshaded (by him, no less) in the season 2 episode, "A T-Rex and Tangled Ideas".
  • Pyromaniac: Enthusiastically suggests burning down the old treehouse because "fire will cleanse the earth."
  • Two First Names: Three in fact: Kevin, Andrew, and Lee can all be used as first names.
    Bruce
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: He's well aware of exactly what his role in the show is, and explains it in detail when rejecting Ethan's offer to trade art supplies.
  • The Bully: A surprisingly self-aware one, he admits that he became a bully to hide his own insecurities.
  • Dumb Muscle: Karrine treats him as this, though his level of self-awareness and his articulate self-expression subvert this trope.
  • Hidden Depths: He briefly states once that he became a bully to hide his own insecurities.
    Lyle
  • Raiders of the Lost Parody: Breaks away from his class on a nature hike to go on an Indiana Jones-esque adventure for a protein bar.

Other Kids

     Keith
  • Third-Person Person: Keith usually refers to himself in the third person.
  • Wild Child: Got lost on a field trip years ago and has been living feral on Flaming Island ever since.

Parents

     Eugene and Julia Tuttle
Voiced by: Corey Landis (Eugene), Rachel Strauss-Muniz (Julia)
The parents of Ethan and Emily. Eugene Tuttle runs a cafe, while Julia Tuttle spends a lot of her time trying to keep her mother (Grandma Gabby) from doing things that will likely get her arrested.
  • Family Business: The Tuttles own a cafe, and the twins have carried on this line of work by opening their own corn dog stand at the park.
  • Family Theme Naming: Like the twins, Mr. Tuttle's first name begins with E.
  • Good Parents: They're very supportive of their children and express great pride whenever their children demonstrate wisdom and maturity beyond their years. They're also patient with the antics Grandma Gabby drags the twins into.
  • Hartman Hips: Mrs. Tuttle sports a pair of these.
  • Race Lift: Mrs. Tuttle is a brown skinned Cuban-American, whereas in the books she was white.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Mr. Tuttle sported acne, braces and nerd glasses as a teenager, and Mrs. Tuttle admits he wasn't very attractive then. But she sure thinks he is now.
  • So Proud of You: Mr. Tuttle delivers one of these to the twins at the end of "Roll for Power."

     Mr. and Mrs. Karmichael
Karinne's parents.
  • Generation Xerox: Karinne is just like them in nearly every possible way.
  • Kick the Dog: They promote the family dog to daughter of the year over Karinne just because Karinne lost the election for president of her kids club.
     Karinne's Uncle
  • Nepotism: Lets Karinne inflate ticket prices at his carnival because he doesn't realize just how many she's printing.
  • No Name Given: He tells the twins to just call him Karinne's uncle.

Other Adults

     Big Bob
The owner of the Big Bob's Barbecue franchise.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Buys protectionist legislation to hurt competing businesses, bribes politicians, deals in dirty money to buy himself luxuries...and wears white after Labor Day.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Bribed Mayor Jenkins, then a lowly city politician, to pass protectionist legislation to drive out all of Big Bob's competitors in return for Big Bob's help in becoming mayor. He also accidentally admits to using dirty money to buy some of his luxuries.
  • Freudian Excuse: Claims he buys government influence and exploits people because he has no friends and is lonely.
     Agents Fester and Gloidus (SPOILERS)
Two agents from the Freedom And Regulation Team.
Larry: It's pronounced "fairt."
     Mr. Furgenstein
The Tuttles' neighbor who used to buy trash can cleaning services from the twins.
  • Ambiguously Jewish: His last name suggests that he's Jewish, but he's a self-aware German stereotype.
  • Germanic Efficiency: When Mayor Jenkins subsidizes a local car wash to clean trash cans, Mr. Furgenstein drops the twins' service to have his trash can cleaned for half the price.
  • Oktoberfest: Admits to being a proud German stereotype of this variety, even with the hangover.

Historical Domain Characters:

     Benjamin Franklin
  • Amicable Exes: Heavily implied to have dated Gabby at some point and is still friends with her. Though how amicable they are could be called into question when Ben uses Gabby's portrait on a kite in one of his lightning experiments.
     Milton Friedman
  • Fan Disservice: No one wants to see Milton in skinny jeans.
  • Nerds Are Naïve: Milton is easily swayed into trying new fads. He was convinced in college by Derek to try chewing on garbage, and when he visits 2008, he gets taken in by the skinny jeans fad.
