Heller Empire

The main antagonist in the final arc of The Ultraman, from episode 37 to episode 50. Lead by the namesake Heller, it was a group of 3,000 Ultra People of U40 who follow Heller's ideals of abandoning their Ultra forms over immortality. Due to the perverted nature of this, they were banished to the depths of the Dark Nebula for their actions. They returned 10,000 years later with an amassed army fleet, invading their original home planet as revenge for their initial banishment while seeking to expand their universal conquest to even the planet Earth due to Joneus' presence on it.

    As a whole
  • All There in the Manual: The U40 people with Ultra forms are called as Ultra Humanoid. Although not mentioned in the series, the 2013 Tsuburaya encyclopedia stated that Heller and the rest of his followers who abandon their Ultraman forms are called as Anti-Ultra Humanoid.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: You would think that a total of 3,000+ banished people of U40 would form this kind of army, right? Apparently the Heller Army even conscripted a number of alien races into their ranks and tricked a few innocent aliens to fight for their cause.
  • Cool Starship: Being former U40 citizens, the Heller Army moves about and commence their attacks by using combat warships.
  • Evil Counterpart: A self-inflicted example, the Heller Army are originally U40 citizen themselves, thus making it a case of the U40 Ultras fighting their former comrades (and possibly their flesh and blood) to reclaim their planet and liberate the entire universe from Heller's grip.
  • Fallen Hero: The members of Heller Empire were originally U40 citizens who share their believes with Heller regarding immortality. It only gets messier from that point that it eventually became a full-scale civil war 10,000 years later.
  • Revenge: The army invaded Planet U40 as a retribution for being banished into the dark nebula in 10,000 years prior to the series.

    Heller

Heller

Voiced by Tamio Oki

First appearance: Crisis of the Ultra Planet U40!!
The main antagonist of The Ultraman since episode 37 and the de facto leader of Heller Empire and its armies. After being banished into the dark nebula with his 3,000 supporters, Heller sworn to have his revenge by building his empire. After invading his former home planet, Heller decided to expand his conquest to the entire galaxy by invading countless planets, with Earth as his next target due to Joneus' presence over there.

  • Ambition Is Evil: His initial goal was to only invade Planet U40 as a revenge, but he expanded his conquest to conquer other innocent alien planets and forcefully conscript some of the alien forces under his leadership.
  • Big Bad: He is the de facto ruler of Heller Empire and is effectively the major villain in the series.
  • Dark Is Evil: His black uniform only serves to complement his presence as a tyrant ruler.
  • Dirty Coward: Has the gall to ditch his army the instant Joneus has him cornered.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: He was killed after being left out in his Heller City as it is falling and crashing to the ground.
  • Evil Is Petty: Banishing him and his 3,000 followers would result in him conquering their former homeworld back after 10,000 years.
  • Evil Old Folks: He is probably at least a few years older than Joneus with the added 10,000 years of his banishment, still energetic enough to become a galactic conqueror.
  • Fallen Hero: Although having long discarded his Ultra Humanoid form, Heller is still considered an evil Ultra on his own right, making him a progrenitor to the real evil Ultras like Evil Tiga and so on.
  • Fatal Flaw: Overconfidence. He trapped the Great Sage into a data disk and exploited the Ultra Mind as a power source to his turret while gloating that he has the advantage in the battle. What he fails to realize is that Joneus and the other great 7 Ultras were proven stronger beyond his defenses and his own forces many times. When Joneus managed to attack his entire Heller City, it signals Heller into making an exit, even if it means abandoning his own supporters.
  • Faux Affably Evil: At first glance he looked like a normally composed dictator, but when things gone south, he was quick to drop this facade.
  • Galactic Conqueror: His current position in the Heller Army, predating even the currently famous Ultraman Belial.
  • Immortality Immorality: For someone who claims to shed his Ultraman form over immortality, Heller has degraded himself into a tyrannical ruler and conqueror.
  • It's All About Me: The entire Heller Empire exist to only satisfy Heller alone. He even orders the attack on Earth and other planets despite their zero involvement in his banishment, all for the sake to throw his tantrum over being banished from his home world prior.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The first half of the anime lacked a major antagonist, but by the second half and his army making their debut in episode 37 fits the mold as a more serious threat Hikari and Joneus face.
  • Lack of Empathy: He unleashes a full scale attack on Earth after fearing that mankind would team up with the U40 Ultras to stop him, killing as many innocents along the way. He even extends this callousness to his own soldiers, treating them as cannon fodder just to satiate his ego.
  • Names To Run Away From Very Fast: His name is Heller, as in he and his army bring a metaphorical "hell" in their conquests.
  • Narcissist: His desire for immortality makes him a malignant example. On top of that, he has a clear Lack of Empathy and sees his own army as his expendable and will gladly abandon them when he's out of options.
  • Never My Fault: Heller blames the entire U40 population for his exile. Not surprising, he invaded the planet in retribution and desire for power and conquest, and then takes his frustration further towards Earth.
  • Orcus on His Throne: He simply commands his armies far away from U40 while Royger supervises the attack on Earth.
  • The Sociopath: Heller is defined with the following traits of a classic sociopath: ambitious, power-hungry, lack of shame, uncaring for the suffering of others other than his own and won't stop at nothing until he got what he desired.
  • The Unfought: In truth, Heller was never actually a competent fighter, only ordering the rest of his followers to do the deed and was killed when his ejected city crashed and burn on the ground.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: He attempts to escape when his entire city is in shambles, but Joneus isn't so merciful in letting him out.

  • The Dragon: To Heller.
  • Evil Old Folks: Looks the part of it, especially with his gray hair. Do note that at that time, his voice actor Ryuzaburo Otomo is still in his late 20's.
  • Face Death with Dignity: He purposely stayed behind in the ruined Titan base while gloating to Joneus that Amia was kidnapped and transported to Heller. All while being aware that his death is ahead and he has none the worse for fear.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He manipulates innocent aliens to do the Heller Army's deeds to, best shown tricking an alien boy and an alien hunter into fighting Joneus.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His name is also pronounced in Japanese in the same way as the Lloighor creature from the Cthulhu mythos.
  • Not So Above It All: He would take the time to caress Monki instead of immediately killing it, only doing so when the little monkey try to escape.
  • Would Hurt a Child: As if manipulating a young alien into having his monster attacking Joneus, Royger soon kidnapped the boy's monster into a brainwashed servant and had his servants attempted to shoot the boy defenseless.

Re-Orolaan
First appearance: The Boy who Brought Along a Monster
The Pet Monstrosity under the care of Alien Opernicus Fedelico. The two were tricked by Royger into attacking Earth under the assumption that his planet would by destroyed by Joneus. When Orolaan retreated from Joneus' fight, the monster was kidnapped by Royger's forces to be transformed into a more feral form against its will.
  • Achilles' Heel: Literally; Orolaan doesn't like the underside of its front right feet to be touched, deeming it sensitive. Fedelico relay it to Hikari in his final moments.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Royger had his men kidnapped Orolaan from Fedelico and convert it into a feral monster.

  • Mercy Kill: Since Orolaan is beyond saving and Fedelico being dead, Joneus decided that the only mercy left for the monster was to kill it.
  • Reforged into a Minion: Through the computer lodged into its brain by the Heller Army. Even without misleading Fedelico and Orolaan, they were intentionally waiting to get their hands on the monster.
  • Rubber Man: The original Orolaan has a flexible body texture, allowing it to elongate its neck and turn into a space saucer on its own. This ability was lost after being brainwashed by the Heller Army.

After initially assuming that this Ultra may be Elek or Loto, Hikari was shocked to discover him being Joneus. Of course, Hikari correctly deduced that this giant is an impostor of yet another plans made by the Heller Army.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: In the English dub, the fake Joneus is Giros' disguise instead of being a Robot Me of Joneus.
  • Beam-O-War: Both the real and fake Joneus settled their last fight by clashing their Planium Rays.
  • Engineered Heroics: Plays the part of the hero to Giros' villain.
  • Robot Me: A mechanical doppelganger that appears convincingly identical to Joneus on the outside.
  • This Was His True Form: Prior to destruction, the fake Joneus turned blue. The English adaptation combined Giros and fake Joneus into the same person. Thus, Giros' defeat was meant to appear as if it was the fake Joneus' true form.

To solve this problem, the Heller Army used the Dostony 2 to bring their fused unit 1 back to their base, forming Neo Dostony by separating Monki and replaced it with the aforementioned second unit. The fused monster was quickly sent to attack the Defense Army's base.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: The Dostony 2 is armed with blade underneath its right arm. This weapon carried on to Neo Dostony.

  • Kill and Replace: The androids replace the actual Unit 201 to slip into the Science Guard Party's base undetected.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: "Jinda" revealing the information of his plan to Hikari before executing him would be a nice sendoff if Hikari isn't Joneus' host. When Joneus removed the bomb from Pig, he also used it to destroy Golding.

  • Final Boss: The last monster to show up in the Ultraman anime series, to be killed by Joneus and his allies.
