    The Roommates

Kimberly Finkle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/430157_5.png
"I still think sex is better when it's with someone you love, and it's an expression of your commitment."
Portrayed By: Pauline Chalamet

A girl from a small town in Arizona who is out of her depth at Essex. She is on a scholarship and works at the campus coffee shop to make ends meet.

  • Aesop Amnesia: By the end of season 2, Kimberly has completely forgotten that she's not supposed to be dating guys that are linked to her roommates, as she kisses Canaan, her best friend Whitney's ex-boyfriend and lies to her face about it, which causes Whitney to quietly end their friendship. Kimberly also forgot that because of Nico, Leighton's brother, she lost her scholarship for cheating on an exam.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": When Leighton comes out to Bela and Whitney, Kimberly tries to pretend she didn't know either, but they correctly deduce she's lying.
  • Betty and Veronica: She's the troublemaking and people-pleasing Veronica to Whitney's down-to-earth Betty, with Canaan as the Archie.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: When someone tosses a piece of trash on the floor in front of her co-workers, she takes it upon herself to deliver an epic tirade about how she and the other employees get treated because they work.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: Kimberly gets a couple complimentary references to her having large breasts.
  • Country Mouse: Kimberly, being from Arizonanote , is portrayed as the most socially inept and innocent of the roommates, to the point of coming close to being The Ingenue. The implication is that growing up in a small town has made her incredibly sheltered.
  • Dirty Coward: Kimberly avoids eye contact with Whitney and lies in her face about kissing Canaan the night of the Theta party when she asks her if something interesting happened to her, prompting the latter to end their frienship and move to Kappa.
  • Dude Magnet: She attracted Nico, Jackson, Canaan and a nerdy guy named Fred.
  • Has a Type: The shallow Kimberly and good-looking muscular guys: Nico, Canaan and Jackson. Canaan himself and Lila even lampshaded her type of guys in season 2.
  • Hypocrite: She reasonably advises Bela to come clean to Eric about her cheating with Dan O'Connell, emphasizing that "honesty is the best policy, even if it's hard", despite her lying to Whitney, her best friend of all people, about kissing Canaan.
  • NaĂŻve Newcomer: Her most defining trait. Growing up in a lower-middle-class town and graduating as a valedictorian, she had no idea how much of a step up college life would be from high school.
  • Secret-Keeper: At the end of the first season, Leighton comes out as a lesbian to Kimberly. When Leighton comes out to their other roommates in the second season premiere, Kimberly's reaction makes Bela and Whitney realize immediately that she already knew.
  • Scholarship Student: Kimberly enters Essex on a scholarship, and also has to work to cover the remaining expenses. The same applies to her fellow barista workers, Canaan and Lila. Thanks to her cheating, she loses her scholarship in "The Truth".
  • Shrinking Violet: She is way outside of her comfort zone in college, whether it'd be in classes or parties.
  • Situational Sociability: Doesn't do well at parties, but she gets along just fine when it's just her and her roommates.
  • Starving Student: Coming from a small town, she struggles financially, leading her to take a student job. According to her, she doesn't even have a more advanced smartphone like nowadays and even has a limited data plan.

Bela Malhotra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bela_23.png
"I'm sex positive, y'all! Deal with it."
Portrayed by: Amrit Kaur

A former nerd who is now an aspiring college comedian.

  • Aesop Amnesia: Bela learned that everything it's not always about her and she shouldn't be doing sexual favors to be taken seriously as a comedy writer after her unpleasant experience at The Catullan. However, she's shown to be at it again when she takes interest in an unpaid internship offered by Dan O'Connell, only for Bela to have her chance threatened when Eric also wants to apply for said internship. After hearing advice from Leighton, Bela misses the point of it by having sex with Dan. So, Bela technically cheated on Eric, who breaks up with her when he finds out. She even betrays her colleagues of The Foxy by taking sole credit for all their work, which makes them kick Bela out of the magazine and not let her move in with them next year.
  • Author Avatar: Similar to Mindy Kaling herself, as a South Asian woman breaking into the world of college comedy.
  • Bollywood Nerd: She describes her high school self as the typical nerdy, glasses-wearing, acne-afflicted Indian nerd. Now that she's gotten rid of those, she's overly eager to start fooling around.
  • Break the Haughty: Season 2 wasn't so kind to Bela as she was given a well-deserved dose of Laser-Guided Karma from those people who have been wronged by her. For cheating with Dan O'Connell for an internship, Eric breaks up with her and gets scolded by his dads. Then, she allows a reporter to publish an article of The Foxy solely centered on her and bluntly tells an aspiring writer, Jorja, to quit comedy, resulting in her getting lambasted on social media as a "female misogynist". This was also the last straw for Jo and Evangeline to kick her out of the magazine and decide not to let her room with them for the sophomore year. Now completely alone, and on the verge of academic probation, Bela feels genuinely guilty for her actions as all she ever wanted was for people to like her for who she is, yet she keeps hurting them more and more, which prompts her to request a transfer.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: When it comes to opportunities for working in comedy and people advising Bela on what she should do, she falls into this by doing sexual favors more often than not.
    • In the pilot episode, she came to Essex specifically for The Catullan, but she gets discouraged into joining by main co-editor Eric with the excuse that "I don't know if there are gonna be that many female spots". She discusses this with her roommates, and Leighton suggests that she show them she's fun enough to be around with. Later on, she attends a party the magazine is hosting where Ryan, the other main co-editor and Eric's friend, tells her to do something to win over six of the editors he's pointing at at the stairs. She does the total opposite by giving each a handjob, securing her a spot, but this move inadvertently gets her in trouble with Evangeline, who slutshames Bela because one of the editors happens to be her boyfriend and calls her out for not asking if they had girlfriends as well.
    • In "Doppelbanger", she finds it difficult to write a comedy portfolio (which she's never been made aware of) for stand-up comedian Dan O'Connell, to whom she is his student liason, to consider her for an unpaid comedy internship, which Eric is also interested in. Leighton tells her to take any opportunity to get Dan to remember her. But Bela ends up having sex with Dan to get the internship. This would come back to bite her in the ass when Eric finds out she cheated on him with Dan and breaks off their relationship.
  • Dude Magnet: Milo, Ryan, Wes and Eric were the guys whom Bela attracted.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Prone to this thanks to being very sexually open. She straight up asks Nico's friend to show his abs and the first thing she sends guys on Tinder is asking them for shirtless pics.
  • Ethical Slut: She's generally sex-positive and gives six handjobs less than a week into Essex, but emphasizes she never would've given them to some of the boys if she'd known they had girlfriends.
  • Fatal Flaw: Just as Eric points out (and Bela herself later acknowledges), her efforts to get other people to like her and take her work as a comedy writer seriously. The harder Bela tries to do so, the more she hurts the ones who truly care about her. This comes to bite her in the ass when she cheats on Eric with Dan O'Connell out of desperation for an internship and cutting her female colleagues of The Foxy out of an article in which she takes credit for their work on the magazine, which causes them to kick her out of the magazine.
  • Geeky Turn-On: She prefers it if Eric keeps his glasses on during sex (even when he points out it's sometimes impractical).
  • Genki Girl: Is extremely enthusiastic all of the time, and it is quickly noticed by her roommates that something is wrong in the few instances she isn't (O.O.C. Is Serious Business)
  • Has a Type: Short guys who are sex gods: Eric and Wes.
  • Heel Realization: By the second season finale, Bela is now alone after destroying her relationships with both Eric and her female colleauges of The Foxy, coming to realize how wrong her actions were and feeling remorseful that she kept hurting the people she cared about. To put a nail on the coffin, Bela's grades have been slipping, with only a GPA of 1.8 reflected on her expedient, so Bela, without telling her roommates, has a meeting with an admission official to request that she be transferred to another college.
  • Nerds Are Virgins: She was this during high school, attributing this to having acne, glasses and easily sweaty armpits. Now that she's starting college and has fixed all those issues, she's the one of the roommates who most actively wants to get laid.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Eric gives one to Bela, not only for cheating on him with Dan, but also for her selfish behavior and spending too much time getting other people to like her and not valuing the people who actually like her that it's not enough. Bela later delivers one to herself after being kicked out of The Foxy for taking sole credit for their work as she requests a transfer.
  • Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Being set up as this with Eric — par for the course for a Mindy Kaling project.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: After Ryan is removed from the Catullan, with Evangeline taking his place as co-editor, a bunch of male writers take his side and a rift forms in the club, Bela decides that she's had enough of the place and quits writing for it.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In season 2. She cheats on Eric by sleeping with a known comedian to get his opinion on her ideas. When called out on it, her defense is that anyone else would've done the same. Even further when she has a journalist published an article about The Foxy, but the article is only about her. The final straw for the rest of The Foxy's staff to kick her out is when she downplays the seriousness of a new writer being rejected about her.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Bela is the only student of South Asian ancestry. She's the only South Asian in the cast aside from her parents, who are seen a couple times.

Leighton Murray

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/leighton.png
"I like my identity. I don't want to be the gay Kappa girl or the lesbian cousin."
Portrayed by: Reneé Rapp

A legacy student from an affluent New York City family, who is also a closeted lesbian.

  • Chick Magnet: After coming out, Leighton finds herself as one in Season 2, with most queer girls on campus into her, Alicia and Tatum among them. In season 1, when she was not ready to come out, only the guys, including a friend of Nico's, were attracted to her.
  • Closet Gay: Very much so at first. She initially refused to come out as gay, not wanting to be labeled as such.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Easily the snarkiest of the roommates.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Once she comes out, Leighton bangs every girl at Essex. However, she didn't even consider that two of her flings, who turn out to be each other's exes, would come over to her room at the same time to hang out sometime. They don't take kindly on Leighton supposedly playing them.
  • Fan Disservice: When she forces herself to have sex with a boy despite being a lesbian and is clearly faking enjoying herself.
  • Gayngst: Leighton. She knows she's gay but she's adamantly in the closet and refuses to even think about leaving. She's absolutely terrified of her life changing if anyone ever found out. She ends up telling Kimberly at the end of season 1 just so she can confess her feelings about this to someone. In Season 2 she also tells her other friends, having grown to accept herself.
  • Has a Type: Lesbian enemies-turned-lovers: Alicia and Tatum.
  • Hypocrite: Leighton called out Tatum for insulting the women's center and her friends, even though Leighton herself did exactly the same thing back in season 1. Tatum lampshades this.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She comes across as rude and sarcastic, but she does show genuine care for her roommates and even warms up to Alicia and the others at the women's center.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: She's a very femme woman who's always made up with long hair and very stylish clothing, while also being a closeted lesbian.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She is called "a reverse catfish" by one of her hookups for being even hotter in person.
  • Really Gets Around: In Season 2, she takes advantage of her newly out status to date a number of different women.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: She may have the personality of an Alpha Bitch, but she's hiding a double-life of having gay relationships, unwilling to come out of the closet.

Whitney Chase

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/whitney_4.png
"I like men, not boys."
Portrayed by: Alyah Chanelle Scott

The daughter of a senator from Washington who plays for the soccer team.

  • The Ace: She's gorgeous, an extremely talented athlete that brings her soccer team to a serious competition for the very first time, and the daughter of a well-known senator, giving her instant popularity on campus.
  • Betty and Veronica: In the Kimberly/Whitney/Canaan love triangle, she is the responsible and practical Betty to Kimberly's talkative and dishonest Veronica.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Canaan asks Whitney if she'll be his girlfriend, leaving her confused as she thought that they were already boyfriend and girlfriend. Her suspicions are fueled by her jealousy over Zoe and, after some poor advice from the Kappas, Whitney goes through his phone to find a message from Zoe that she believes is proof that he's been playing her. However, Canaan clarifies that he only met up with Zoe so he could gently reject her, but he still breaks up with Whitney, upset that she broke their trust.
  • Dude Magnet: Dalton, Canaan and Andrew were interested in Whitney.
  • Fatal Flaw: Trust issues. Justified, Whitney had quite a traumatic breakup with her coach Dalton, with whom she had an affair, as he was clearly using her. She had trouble trusting Canaan, as she believed they were already dating, when he asked her to be his girlfriend, going as far as to go through his phone to prove if he was cheating with Zoe. As a result, Canaan breaks up with her. Had Whitney simply talked to Canaan, it would've saved her a lot of trouble, but no, she instead jumped to rushed conclusions. While her experience with Dalton was horrible, this didn't excuse her actions at all.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her dad is known as a deadbeat, a sentiment her mom agrees with.
  • Has a Type: Sex-only condescending jerks: Dalton and Andrew.
  • I Am Not My Father: Dislikes being known as the Senator's daughter.
  • The Mistress: Is in a secret relationship with Dalton, her married assistant soccer coach. At first she doesn't know and is angry but continues seeing him after she learns he's unhappy with his marriage.
  • Woman Scorned: Threw a football at her ex for not telling her about his marriage and smashed his windshield in a fit of rage when it came out he was just using her.

     Others

Nico Murray

Portrayed by: Gavin Leatherwood
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/untitled_741.png
Leighton's brother.
  • Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder: Has a girlfriend who's studying abroad in Barcelona when he starts sleeping with Kimberly.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Despite his girlfriend Maya studying abroad, it never actually ocurred to Nico that Leighton would arrange for her to come to Essex for his 21st birthday surprise party, something that upsets Kimberly, who feels hurt and betrayed that Nico kept this from her. Made worse by them hooking up behind Leighton and Maya's backs, but there was clearly no way for Kimberly to know that Nico had a girlfriend.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: Kimberly got a real good look at his lips when learning French pronunciations.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Literally, his first appearance is running shirtless. He also quickly caught the attention of the roommates when he was looking for his sister, Leighton.
  • Never My Fault: After he finds out that Leighton blew the whistle on him to Maya about his cheating with Kimberly, Nico plays the victim card on Leighton, blaming her for ruining his relationship. However, Nico is the one who had ruined it in the first place by deciding to sleep with Kimberly, and not telling her anything about Maya. Leighton calls him out on this. He had basically dug his own grave and forced Leighton's hand in telling Maya the truth for not talking to Kimberly before.
  • Put on a Bus: Gets expelled from Essex between Season 1 and Season 2 after Kimberly turns in the tests Theta had been using to cheat.

Jocelyn

Portrayed by: Lauren "Lolo" Spencer
  • Disabled Snarker: Being on a wheelchair doesn't stop her from throwing subtle sarcastic comments.
  • Twofer Token Minority: A threefer - she's a woman, black, and disabled (she uses a wheelchair).

Canaan Greene

Portrayed by: Chris Meyer
One of Kimberly's co-workers; starts spending time with Whitney later in the series.
  • Betty and Veronica: He is relaxed in contrast to Andrew who is a jerk and a snitch.
  • Black and Nerdy: He hides it well, but near the end of the second season, it comes out that Canaan is so good at Economics that he's being honored at an awards banquet.
  • Chick Magnet: Whitney, Kimberly and Zoe all fell for him.
  • Liar Revealed: Kimberly finds out from Zoe that he had never intended to invite her to the award banquet - he wanted Kimberly to accompany him instead.
  • Love Triangle: Finds himself in the middle of one between Kimberly and Whitney at the end of the second season.
  • Troll: Spends Kimberly's first day at Sips telling her elaborate (and fake) sob stories about how his mother is addicted to crack and how he's sending money back to support his sisters, and that Lila has a baby with a man who's currently in prison.

Lila Flores

Portrayed by: Ilia Isorelýs Paulino
One of Kimberly's co-workers at Sips.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • Initially just in Kimberly's circle as one of her co-workers, Lila's outrageous and promiscuous personality makes her and Bela fast friends. In the second season, Bela taps Lila to write for Foxy, the all-women comedy magazine she starts to compete with The Catullan.
    • In the second season, Lila gets mad at Kimberly for suggesting she apply for a newly-open manager position, not because Lila is offended but because she really wants the job and is afraid to interview for it. During a practice interview, Lila tells Kimberly she actually likes working at Sips because she likes making customers happy and feeling like she's part of a community. Lila gets the job and becomes Kimberly and Canaan's new manager.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Lily is the only explicit Latina in the cast, to judge by her last name of Flores.

Willow

Portrayed by: Renika Williams
One of Whitney's soccer teammates and later close friends.
  • Lesbian Jock: She's a lesbian soccer player.
  • Odd Friendship: While both would probably hesitate to call each other their "friend," Willow starts giving Leighton advice and helps her pick up women on campus once Leighton comes out.
  • Passionate Sports Girl: Is on the Essex soccer team with Whitney.
  • Secret-Keeper: Midway through the first season, Willow accidentally sees a picture of Dalton on Whitney's phone and figures out they've been hooking up. Whitney swears her to secrecy, and Willow manages to keep it to herself through the whole season.
  • Taking the Heat: On Whitney's request, Willow falsely takes credit for the affair with their coach Dalton when her mom wants to know how the other party involved is doing out of concern. But Whitney eventually tells her the truth.
  • Twofer Token Minority: A threefer - she's a woman, black, and a lesbian.

Jena

Portrayed by: Maya Rose
Whitney's antagonistic teammate, who later becomes her friend.
  • Birds of a Feather: Whitney and Jena befriend on their shared experiences of being mistreated by their boyfriends.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Jena catches Whitney and Willow in the middle of a conversation about Dalton's affair with the latter, but when Willow tells her to mind her own business, Jena assumes they're sleeping together.
  • Differing Priorities Breakup: Zig-zagged. Jena's boyfriend, Jason, breaks up with her because of her busy soccer schedule, which leads Whitney to comfort her. She admits that he sucks.
  • Internal Reveal: In episode 9, she and her teammates already know about Whitney and Dalton's affair, but instead of taunting or blaming her for the firing of their coaches, they show no ill will towards Whitney and choose to blame Dalton.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She could be mean, sarcastic, nosy and self-centered, but near the end of Episode 2, Jena shows a soft spot for Whitney when they both have a touchful conversation about finding "the right guy", and even stands by Whitney after finding out about her affair with Dalton.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Of her soccer team, no less. The reason why Jena has a beef with Whitney is because she thinks that she got in because of her familial connections to her mother, a senator, despite the fact that she entered on her own merits. However, they become friends in the second episode's climax.
  • Out of Focus: She is last seen in the second season premiere. As Jena, Willow and her other teammates already have plans after the soccer season is over, there's no reason for Whitney to see them often, except for Willow, of course.
  • Pet the Dog: Jena supports Whitney, along with the other teammates, when the truth about her affair with Dalton comes out. Although they were already friends by that time.

Alicia

Portrayed by: Midori Francis
The leader at the college's women's center.
  • Betty and Veronica: She is the Betty. A lesbian tomboyish feminist advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, while in the mix comes Tatum as the Veronica, a lesbian but icy and aloof Uptown Girl who dresses in the latest fashion.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She shows strong signs of this, at least twice.
    • When a guy peeing in front of her insults Alicia's sexuality, she retaliates by punching him multiple times until Leighton steps in to stop her.
    • Then, she becomes greatly enraged to learn that Essex cut the women's center funding in half, even complaining to the receptionist on the phone while calling her "bitch" and President Lacey "a giant penis who hates all women!".
  • Deadpan Snarker: She loves being sarcastic and making smart remarks, especially if they get under Leighton's skin.
  • Out of Focus: She is last seen in the Season 1 finale after breaking up with Leighton, who's not ready to come out. She returns for the final two episodes of Season 2.
  • Soapbox Sadie: Alicia is a committed feminist and activist for LGBT+ rights who's part of the women's center on campus. She angrily berates the receptionist over their funding being cut, insulting her and the college president for the fact.
  • Twofer Token Minority: She's one of the two characters in the cast with East Asian descent, who's also into women.

Ryan Hutton

Portrayed by: Conor Donnally
One of the co-editors of the Catullan.
  • Betty and Veronica: He's the pervertive Veronica to Eric's righteous Betty, with Bela as the Archie.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Handsome and friendly to everyone, but it becomes clear that he is a sexual predator who starts harassing Bela and has done this to other girls in the past.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: He's very gorgeous on the outside, but on the inside it's clear he's a manipulative sexual predator.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Turns out to be one inside The Catullan when he enjoys taking advantage of the female members' innocence to coerce them into sex.

Eric Miller

Portrayed by: Mekki Leeper
The other co-editor of the Catullan.
  • Betty and Veronica: Eric is the hard-to-please nerd while Ryan is the charismatically manipulative handsome sexual predator.
  • Geek Physique: Skinny, pale, wears glasses. While at a party in the second season, he gets tossed around by a group dancing the Cupid Shuffle.
  • Hates Everyone Equally: He is acerbic to just about everyone, even Ryan, who is his roommate and friend.
  • Hypocrite: Eric can come off as this for initially supporting Bela with the Dan O'Connell student liason thing, and then having the gall to interfere in her passion for the comedy internship.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: In later episodes, his friendlier side starts to show:
    • Carla describes him as one of the nicer people she met at the Catullan.
    • When Bela and Carla tells him and Evangeline about the sexual harassment by Ryan they've endured, he is initially in disbelief about it, but after the initial shock passes, he sincerely apologizes to Bela, believes them and takes their side going forward.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: After he takes Bela and Carla's side regarding Ryan's harassment, Ryan kicks him out of their apartment. Ryan's departure from the Catullan also leads to a rift that makes Evangeline leave the magazine, leaving Eric as the sole editor.
  • Out of Focus: "The Essex College Food Workers Strike" is the last we see of Eric so far, after he breaks up with Bela for cheating on him with Dan O'Connell and refusing any further contact. He is only mentioned by Bela in the finale as she acknowledges her self-centered behavior talks about all the bad things she's done to the people she cares about, alluding to him saying "I broke an amazing guy's heart by being selfish".
  • Pet the Dog: Eric goes from being a huge prick to Bela in season 1 to learning to support her aspirations as a comedy writer, then becoming her boyfriend.
    • While still maintaining his no-nonsense demeanor, Eric is genuinely happy for Bela after she's accepted in The Catullan.
    • When he first learns about Ryan groping Bela, Eric reacts by lashing out and dismissing her cries of help. However, he shows up to Bela's dorm and apologizes for his behavior (albeit reading the apology from a scrap of paper).
    • Despite that Bela quit from The Catullan and the inevitable outcome, Eric holds no ill will towards her and wishes her good luck for what she'll do next.
    • Eric is initally angry at Bela for tampering with his magazine to benefit hers, he does admit that the website is great.
  • Promotion to Opening Titles: Eric becomes a main character in the second season.
  • Sex God: At one point Bela admits he's better at sex than another guy she's been hooking up with. Eric claims it's because he watches a lot of porn.
  • Token Good Teammate: Surprisingly, Eric of all people in The Catullan. While he initially starts off dismissive towards Bela and, unlike Evangeline, disbelieves her sexual assault accusations on Ryan, however, Eric genuinely apologizes and is upset that he could do such thing to Bela.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Well, to be fair, even though Eric's anger of Bela cheating on him with Dan is quite understandable, he did (in a way) start this conflict by competing with Bela for the comedy internship.

Evangeline Hashima

Portrayed by: Sierra Katow
A writer of the Catullan, now of the Foxy.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Evangeline was as disgusted as Bela when Danny Marawitz made a sexist joke about her, explaining that he addressed her as Ali Wong, a real-life comedian, and she wouldn't have it. She admits that she's glad Bela put Danny in his place.
    • She is naturally horrified when Bela tells her and Eric about Ryan groping her and Carla.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While her rudeness to Bela was petty even when she did try to apologize for jerking off her boyfriend and despite having genuine sympathy for Bela's work not being taken seriously because of her gender, Evangeline is on point telling Bela that she should've asked the other editors she jerked off as well, which was to secure herself a spot on The Catullan, if they had girlfriends.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's quite attractive while undressed at the naked party, despite being only shown from the head to the shoulders.
  • Pet the Dog: When she first met Bela, Evangeline did not like her for fooling around with her boyfriend's dick, then rejected her apology via e-mail with two words: "Fuck you". Later, they bump into one another at the naked party and Bela braces herself for whatever shit Evangeline wanted to throw at. Fortunately, Evangeline reveals that she was impressed by Bela's submission, describing it as "pretty solid" but that the staff (namely consisting of men) "was split" between it and some others, and she had fought so hard to have Bela accepted in The Catullan. Evangeline was only acting like a jerk to Bela as she couldn't afford to look like an idiot for helping the person who gave a handjob to her guy. She does, however, advise Bela to hold her horses on her vocation because she's a freshman. They make up and become friends.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She was the only woman, along with Jo, to be a staff member of a sexist magazine, The Catullan, followed by Bela and Carla. They all become fed up with its toxic environment and quit, eventually starting their own female magazine, The Foxy.
  • So Proud of You: Twice, to Bela:
    • In "Kappa", she can be seen smiling when Bela gives Essex alum Danny Marawitz, a comedian she looked up to, a well-deserved hell of a "The Reason You Suck" Speech for publicly humiliating her with a sexist joke.
    • In "The Surprise Party", she hugs Bela after her comedy piece wins.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: Along with Bela and her friend Jo, she quits The Catullan, having grown sick with its toxic environment of sexism after some of the editors did not take well Ryan getting kicked out for sexually assaulting Bela and Carla. Later on, they start their own magazine called ''The Foxy''.
  • Twofer Token Minority: Evangelina is the other student aside from Alicia who's of East Asian descent.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: She gives this to Bela after learning that she lied about not knowing that the article of The Foxy was only centered on her, as Bela checked on and approved it without consideration of how it might hurt her female colleagues, and also because of the post Jorja made about her after she refused to give feedback on her work by brutally telling her to quit comedy. For this, she's fired from the magazine and not allowed to move in with her and Jo for the sophomore year.

Jackson

Portrayed by: Mitchell Slaggert
A new student from Kansas and a former climate refugee.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: He's a blond decent guy on good terms with the girls, especially Kimberly.
  • Nice Guy: He's shown to be very cordial and approachable to Kimberly and even lets her rest on his dorm room when she accidentally locked herself out.
  • Opposites Attract: Jackson likes that he and Kimberly are this, because he thinks they can learn new things from each other and doesn't want to date people with the same interests.
  • Out of Focus: Last seen in "Sex and Basketball" when Kimberly informs Jackson that she's breaking up with him. He isn't mentioned again afterwards (at least for now).
  • Really Gets Around: Jackson makes no secret that he has lot of sex with random girls, as he can be heard moaning next door to the girls' dorm room.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: To Nico as Kimberly is only interested in him because of his good looks.
  • Unknown Rival: He is unaware that Kimberly is in love with Canaan, nor does he realize it's probably the reason why she breaks up with him.

Tatum

Portrayed by: Grace Dzienny
Leighton's new love interest and doppelgänger.
  • Betty and Veronica: Being an Alpha Bitch herself just like Leighton used to be, she's the Veronica to Alicia's Betty. Tatum is more judgmental and a bit of a jerk, while Alicia is more open-minded and caring.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: While insulting Leighton's friends from the women's center was a dick move (even one of them got angry for doing the same to one of her pieces of work), and Leighton told Tatum off for being an "asshole" about it, Tatum retorts that she's not one to talk as Leighton herself was also pretty awful to them in the beginning. Let's not forget that Tatum hadn't been through the Character Development that Leighton underwent back in season 1. This is what makes Leighton realize that Tatum is not a good match for her, as the things they happen to have in common are actually the ones she wants to change about herself, and ultimately gets back together with Alicia.
  • Inexplicably Identical Individuals: She is heavily similar to Leighton on her looks, and how she talks and dresses.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Tatum is as judgmental and a bit unkind as she used to be, but she was shown to genuinely like Leighton, gave her permission to meet her ex-girlfriend Alicia, and supported her when she wasn't yet ready to come out to her father.
  • Out of Focus: Her last appearance is on "Sex and Basketball" when Leighton breaks up with Tatum after she insults the women's center and abruptly leaves a fundraising party they're hosting.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute:
    • To Alicia, due to her and Leighton starting off as rivals, then becoming lovers.
    • Obviously enough, she is a carbon copy of Leighton from season 1.
  • Understanding Girlfriend: Leighton freaks out at the thought of Tatum dumping her, just like Alicia dumped her, if she tells her that her father is coming to visit and she hasn't came out to him yet. However, Tatum is totally okay with it and allows Leighton to go through with it at her own pace.

Andrew Fuller

Portrayed by: Charlie Hall
Whitney's biochemistry classmate.
  • Betty and Veronica: He is the sexist and stubborn Veronica to Canaan's smooth-talking Betty. In both cases, Whitney stands out as the Archie.
  • Fanboy: Andrew is revealed to be a huge fan of Senator Chase, Whitney's mother.
  • Jerkass: He behaves like this to Bela and Whitney, the latter mostly, when they keep talking during class and snitches on them to the professor.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Similar to Dalton, in the way that Andrew, Whitney's biochemistry classmate, verbally mistreats her, then has casual sex with her.
  • Trying Not to Cry: After Whitney breaks up with him in the second season finale, Andrew....doesn't take it well and publicly makes a sobbing wreck of himself.

Zoe

Portrayed by: Aketra Sevillian
A new employee at Sips.
  • The Ace: She proves to be very useful with the coding system at Sips.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Zoe had a crush on Canaan, who was in a relationship with Whitney.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite Zoe declaring her feelings for Canaan (off-screen), she gracefully respected his wishes of dating Whitney.
  • Nice Girl: Always with a smile on her face.
  • Satellite Character: Not much is known about her, as all of her scenes (without counting the Kissmas party where she sits on his lap while wearing the Santa costume) are about her working with Canaan at Sips.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Zoe tells Kimberly that Canaan never invited her to the award banquet, which leads to her acting on her feelings for Canaan, despite Lila trying to warn her against it for the sake of her friendship with Whitney, who saw them from afar and decided not to room with Kimberly next year after she lied to her about it. Had Kimberly not brought up the award banquet to Zoe, she would have followed Lila's advice and let her best friend be happy with Canaan.
