Trivia / The Sex Lives of College Girls

Go To

  • Actor-Shared Background: Bela's parents are immigrants from India, just like her actress Amrit Kaur's.
  • Creator Backlash: While she was thankful to the creators of the show as she shared on an Instagram statement responding to the news of her departure, in a 2023 podcast interview Renée Rapp had opened up about her "terrible" experience during the first year of filming, elaborating on how hard it was for her to play (Leighton) a character similar to her. Rapp, who is a lesbian, thought she wasn't "good enough", as most gay men on set openly showed skepticism on her sexual orientation, something that pissed her off. She would even feel a lot of pressure while filming intimate scenes.
  • Dawson Casting: Most of the cast are already way too old to play undergraduate students. The youngest, Reneé Rapp, was 20 when filming began, playing freshman Leighton. "The Surprise Party" focuses on Nico's 21st birthday, while Gavin Leatherwood was actually 26.
  • Disabled Character, Disabled Actor: Jocelyn, who uses a wheelchair, is played by Lauren "Lolo" Spencer, an influencer and disability activist who herself has used one since the age of 19 due to having ALS.
  • Fake American: Amrit Kaur (Bela Malhotra) is Canadian.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: In "Naked Party", Kimberly is shown struggling in her French classes, and has to be taught by Nico. Her actress, Pauline Chalamet, has a French father, was raised in a bilingual household, and currently resides in Paris.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Leighton is a lesbian and her actress, Reneé Rapp, identifies as a lesbian as well.
    • Alicia dates Leighton; her actress, Midori Francis, is herself also queer.
    • The gay Travis is played by Betti, a genderfluid drag performer.
    • Tova's actor, Vico Ortiz, is also non-binary.
    • Coach Woods, who is a lesbian married to another woman, is played by Jillian Armenante, who also married a woman.
    • Molly, one of the women whom Leighton has sex with, was played by queer actress Emily Morales-Cabrera.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot:
    • Gavin Leatherwood (Nico) quit the show after season 1 to focus on other projects he was interested in. In-universe, his absence is justified by Leighton announcing that Nico got expelled over the stolen exams Kimberly used to cheat.
    • The announcement about Leighton being reduced to a recurring character in season 3 has to do with Reneé Rapp's career as a singer. So, Rapp will not be returning to the show after that.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Dylan Sprouse was initially cast for the show as Nico Murray in December 2020, which would've been his first television role since The Suite Life on Deck. However, for unknown reasons, he left the project and was subsequently replaced by Gavin Leatherwood.
    • In the episode "Frat Problems", in which Bela and Leighton are hosting a sexy fundraiser to earn back the respect of the frats and be allowed back to their parties, President Lacey was supposed to be the one trying to have it shut down as shown in a photo gallery. However, in the episode's final cut, this role was taken over by Dean Miller (Rachael Harris).
