The Party

Louise Françoise le Blanc de la Vallière
The main character of the story, whose attempt at summoning a creature catches the direct attention of Arceus himself, who sends her to the world of Pokémon to prove her worth.
  • A-Cup Angst: Is a bit insecure about it, but not as much as she was in canon.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: After Saito spills the beans about the incident to Henrietta, Louise has to admit that Bonnie asking her to marry her brother almost immediately after meeting her is kind of funny.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Louise is much nicer and generally more pleasant to be around than in canon. This is chalked up to her being in a much more supportive environment than the outright toxic one she had at home, leading to a much better mental state where she wasn't as overwhelmed with trying to live up to her society's expectations. Thus allowing the negative and pompous personality traits she developed to erode and allow her more compassionate traits to surface.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Has a much nicer and mutually supportive relationship with Saito than the nearly toxic and abusive relationship she had with him in canon. This is due to the two of them being in a much different environment, one that effectively placed them on much more even footing while removing many of the exacerbating problems of Louise's home environment.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Back in Tristain, Louise became infamous among her peers and family for her inability to properly cast magic. All of her attempts, no matter which spell, ended in an explosion. This led to her being deemed "Louise the Zero."
  • Anger Born of Worry: Once she makes sure that Henrietta is okay after rescuing her from Team Flare, Louise gives her an epic chewing out.
  • Badass Adorable: Not only is Louise cute, she both proves that her Void magic, when properly directed, can cause tremendous amounts of damage and also proves to be quite an effective Pokémon trainer.
  • Badass Bookworm: When it came to understanding magical theory, there was no one else in Louise's class that could rival her. This studious nature lent itself quite well to Louise once she arrived in Kalos, allowing her to pick up the basics and intricacies of Pokémon Battling easily.
  • Berserk Button: Louise, as always, hates people mistaking her for a child, challenging a pair of swimmers to a battle after they assumed she was Saito’s kid sister. Another time, a Drifloon briefly kidnaps Louise to have a playmate, and Saito vows to never let her learn that the species only does that with young children.
  • Best Friend: Becomes this to Saito and the same goes for Henrietta.
  • Black Mage: All of Louise's spells result in explosions, giving her only offensive options in a fight.
  • Birds of a Feather: With her chosen starter, the shiny Fennekin Brennaraki. As a rare shiny Fennekin, Brennaraki was highly sought after by collectors, none of whom cared that she wanted to be a battler. Combined with her being the runt of the litter, it was easy for her and Louise to form a close bond due to Louise experiencing similar issues in her life.
  • Break the Haughty:
    • Her loss to Viola did this to her. Louise entered the battle thinking that, simply because both of her Pokémon had type advantage over Viola's Bug-type Pokémon, she'd be able to easily beat her. She ends up getting her entire team completely wiped out by Viola's Surskit, teaching her not to rely purely on type advantage and instead actually train and incorporate strategy into her battles.
    • A minor case with her fight with Ramos. She could have won, but she was so excited to show Henrietta what she could do that she was more focused on looking good for her friend than actually doing what made the best tactical sense, and both Ramos and Derflinger tell her off for such after the fact.
  • Character Development: Over the course of her journey in Kalos, Louise goes from an arrogant, headstrong, and insecure young girl with a hair-trigger temper who took her problems out on everyone around her to a kind, thoughtful, and courteous young woman eager to continue learning and improving herself. She also largely abandons her feelings of superiority towards those she normally would dismiss as commoners, as seen by her viewing Saito, who would be considered a commoner by Tristain's standards, as both her equal and her best friend.
    • A good example of this was her conversation with Guru Gurkinn at the Tower of Mastery following her failed attempt at Mega Evolution with Auspice. Gurkinn tells Louise that the reason why it failed was because Louise didn't fully understand herself, faults and all. Had Louise heard this at the beginning of the story, she would've felt insulted and angrily rebutted him while ignoring his advice. After spending months walking about Kalos, however, she takes his advice to heart and earnestly tries to follow it.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Louise can't help but try to intervene during any criminal activity she runs across, even when she really should be letting the authorities handle it. This results in her and the rest of her party getting caught up in dangerous situations, some of which nearly result in their deaths.
    • After Team Flare's attack on Cyllage City, she decides that unless she has literally no other choice, she's more than happy to step back and let the proper authorities handle them rather than put her and her friends in harm's way.
  • Determinator: Why she got sent to Kalos in the first place. Louise, more than anything else, is driven by her determination to prove herself. Even Arceus made note of this when he brought her to the Hall of Origin, as unlike every other Void Mage whose familiar summoning ritual he had intervened in who gave up after two failed attempts, Louise went for three.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The Mage to Saito's Fighter, obviously.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Becomes one with Saito following an encounter with a Mega Beedrill. Before that, they couldn't stand each other, but during the attack they learn to work together. Afterwards, the two become best friends.
  • Forgot Their Own Birthday: Has to be reminded of her own birthday after a few months on Earth.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: She plans on taking what she learned in Kalos back to Tristain to try and improve it.
  • Glass Cannon: While she is capable of dishing out tremendous amounts of damage when in a fight, she herself can't take near as much damage.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Can easily fly off the handle into a rage whenever someone pisses her off.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Has no idea about how to properly cast Void spells. Thankfully, after Mew delivers the Founder's Prayer Book, she begins learning how to cast actual Void spells, starting with Teleport...only to quickly abuse it and get herself stuck in a Spinarak's web after running out of willpower.
  • Inept Mage: By her people's standards, anyway. It's quickly determined that the reason why is because Louise is a Void Mage, meaning she is incapable of casting anything but Void magic. Anything else results in an explosion.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Justified, given how Louise is constantly on the road and thus doesn't have the space to pack more clothing options to change into other than a pair of sleepwear.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Before Louise's arrival to Kalos, this was essentially her life. Ostracized by her peers and practically abandoned by most of her family for her seeming inability to properly cast magic, Louise was an outcast in Tristain, leaving her with an explosive temper to mask her insecurities. Things luckily begin to improve with her once she arrives at Kalos, where she makes genuine friendships with both people and Pokémon.
  • Heroic Build: Downplayed. When Louise first came to Kalos she was rather lanky and not very fit, since her life as a noble consisted of little physical activity. So when she first started traveling with Saito, she struggled quite a bit with the long treks and doing her companion’s exercise routine without getting out of breath very quickly. But several months later from traveling and continuing to exercise, Louise develops a much more athletic physique than originally.
  • Muscle Angst: Downplayed and averted. Louise was quite surprised when she became aware of the athletic musculature added to her frame from her healthier lifestyle as a traveling Pokemon trainer, and while she almost didn’t like it due to her Tristian beliefs of it being considered not attractive for a noble woman, she eventually becomes more accepting of her fit figure. Later when Henrietta notes her best friend’s athletic appearance, she doesn’t mind the change and outright scoffs off the outdated nobility beliefs against women being toned.
  • Power of the Void: What her true magical affinity is. While Void magic renders her unable to cast Fire, Water, Air, and Earth magic, she can cast powerful explosions and reach across time and space to summon a familiar. Her attempt to do just that is what caught Arceus' attention.
  • Older Than They Look: Downplayed, but her small stature and flat chest have caused people to mistake her for a little kid, much to her annoyance, despite actually being in her mid-teens.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Saito's Blue.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Coming from a privileged lifestyle, Louise sometimes has trouble remembering that no one here knows who she is and that her funds are much more limited. She buys every single TM and insists on getting only the highest-quality healing items, ignoring Sycamore's protests that it's massively impractical. She does get better after figuring out the store essentially scammed her, though Saito frequently ribs her for it.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: As she continues her Pokémon Journey through Kalos, maturing along the way, she develops into a genuinely kind, sweet, and affectionate person to the people and Pokémon she cares about. She still has a temper, though.
  • Squishy Wizard: Isn't as physically capable as her travelling companion, Saito Hiraga. But overtime this changes as she travels with him and becomes more athletic alongside capable of utilizing efficient tactics with her Pokémon teammates.
  • Teleport Spam: The first proper Void spell she learns lets her teleport, with Derflinger even saying that she can spam it because it's one of the few Void spells that doesn't take forever to cast. Unfortunately, it still uses up a lot of her magical reserves, so once she uses it one too many times she ends up trapped in a Spinarak web.
  • Tsundere: While Louise is a much nicer person than in canon, she still has her moments where her temper can be comically triggered.
  • Wrong Context Magic: A combination of her Void magic, along with residual energy from traveling across Ultra Space into Kalos, results in any Mega Stone that has had extended and prolonged contact with her acting as though she were a Keystone. This allows for any Mega Evolution-capable Pokémon to undergo the phenomenon, potentially to disastrous results.

     Louise's Pokémon

General/Multiple

  • Action Girl: Nearly all of Louise's Pokémon are girls, and are more than capable of holding their own in a battle.
  • Blood Knight: As with nearly all Pokémon, Louise's team greatly loves the thrill of a good fight.
  • True Companions: Develop this dynamic with Louise, all of whom would do anything for. In turn, so would Louise, and both work together to accomplish their goals.

Brennaraki (Fennekin —> Braixen)

Louise's Starter Pokémon, a Shiny Fennekin she received from Professor Sycamore when she was tasked with delivering a package to Viola in Santalune City, thus putting her on her path to competing in the Pokémon League.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was picked on by the rest of her litter due to both being the runt and due to her Shiny status making it nearly impossible for the rest of them to get trainers of their own. The only one people wanted was her, so they took their frustrations out on Brennaraki. As both she and Louise had similar circumstances, they were more easily able to connect.
  • Barrier Warrior: Can use Light Screen to either box her opponents in or protect herself from their attacks.
  • Birds of a Feather: Due to sharing similar circumstances with Louise (ostracized for something outside of their control, people ignoring their desires and wanting to essentially put them in a comfortable, gilded cage), the two of them were able to become quite close very quickly.
  • Everything's Better with Sparkles: Is a Shiny Pokémon. Prior to meeting Louise, however, it caused her no end of trouble on account of all the collectors who wanted to have her.
  • Heroic Second Wind: How her Blaze ability works, as it activates whenever Brennaraki is on her last legs, thus giving her Fire-type moves a massive power boost.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Despite being both the runt of her litter and highly desirable to collectors on account of her being a female Shiny Fennekin, all Brennaraki wanted was to be a battler.
  • The Leader: As Louise's starter, Brennaraki holds this title over the rest of her team.
  • Mundane Utility: As a Fire-type Pokémon, Brennaraki can launch massive blasts of flame at her opponents, create walls of fire to encircle the foe, or shroud themselves with a blaze to add to her strength. She can also light campfires.
  • Jealous Pet: Briefly succumbs to this following Louise's capture of Esprit and her subsequent showering of affection onto the Ralts. Is quickly dropped as Esprit proves unable to be mad at for long.
  • Psychic Powers: Is capable of learning Psychic-type moves, including Psyshock and Psybeam among others.

Aile (Fletchling —> Fletchinder)

The second Pokémon Louise caught while on her journey. A heavy eater, Aile didn't think much of Louise at first, but after Louise risked her life to keep Aile safe from a swarm of Beedrill, her opinion shifted and she became a loyal, if still gluttonous, flier.
  • Big Eater: Will not waste a chance to fill her stomach. At first, Louise even had to exploit this tendency just to get Aile to listen to her commands. While she has mellowed out substantially since then, she still likes to eat as much as she can.
  • Blow You Away: Many of her moves use manipulations of wind to her advantage, either offensively like Razor Wind or in a supporting capacity such as Tailwind to increase her and her teammates' speed in battle.
  • Flight: As a Flying-type, this comes naturally to her and is easily the best flier on the team.
  • Fragile Speedster: Is a very fast and agile Pokémon, but cannot take much of a hit.
  • Jerkass Realization: Has this following their escape from a swarm of angry Beedrill, something that only happened because she spent her time recklessly trying to eat some berries and accidentally got a Weedle injured. After almost getting them all killed, and having Louise try to protect her despite causing it, Aile realized that her previous actions were wrong and became a much more loyal and considerate Pokémon to Louise.
  • Playing with Fire: Obtains the Fire-typing following her evolution into Fletchinder.
  • Razor Wind: Can use the move Air Slash for long ranged attacks.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Before she was caught by Louise, Aile was a very selfish Pokémon who attacked with her flock a swarm of Combee to try and get their honey. After getting caught, she still refused to listen to Louise without being bribed by food. Following their encounter with a swarm of Beedrill, she becomes a much nicer Pokémon after realizing how wrong she was. Still won't apologize for trying to get the Combee's honey, though.

Esprit (Ralts —> Kirlia)

The second Pokémon caught by Louise and third to join her team following a confrontation with a determined collector. A kind, gentle, and loyal Pokémon, Esprit quickly proved to a valuable addition to Louise's team who uses her powerful Psychic and Fairy-typings to great effect.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While Esprit is genuinely one of the kindest and most considerate Pokémon you will ever meet, she becomes outright scary when angered. Something that Maindo, Tanuki, and Aile learn firsthand following Louise and Saito seemingly getting kidnapped by a swarm of Unown while the three Pokémon were off playing pranks. She forces them to help stage a rescue attempt, making Maindo teach her Teleport to get to them as fast as possible, and all three Pokémon can only so much as nod in agreement.
  • The Empath: The Ralts line is able to sense people and Pokémon's emotions. Esprit is no exception.
  • Fight Off the Kryptonite: The Collector that was after her was so horrible that the not-yet-named Esprit actually managed to force her way through the Repel that Saito and Louise were using to keep their campsite safe to escape.
  • Friend to All Children: Loves playing and interacting with baby Pokémon, to the point where when they went to the Pokémon Daycare she even stayed behind to play with them more. That was actually how she evolved into Kirlia, as she tried to protect the baby Pokémon from Team Flare's attempts to steal them.
  • Foil: To her fellow Ralts/Kirlia on Saito's team, Maindo. While Maindo is a rude, self-centered, and arrogant Pokémon whom the others can barely tolerate at the best of times, Esprit is a kind, generous, and selfless Pokémon that the others genuinely like to be around.
  • Glass Cannon: Is capable of dishing out tremendous amounts of damage, but she herself can't take as much of a hit.
  • The Medic: Serves this role as part of Louise's team, frequently making use of healing moves such as Heal Pulse and Life Dew to heal her teammate's injuries.
  • Number Two: Whenever Brennaraki is unavailable, Esprit typically steps up to the plate.
  • Psychic Powers: As a Psychic-type, this is to be expected. She uses these powers both in battle and also to communicate with her follow Pokémon. When she evolves into a Kirlia, her powers become strong enough for her to talk to Louise as well.
  • Purity Personified: Is easily the most polite and courteous Pokémon on Louise's team.
  • Support Party Member: With her wide array of healing moves and Glass Cannon status, Esprit typically stays behind to let others deal the majority of the damage while she helps them from the back.
  • Team Mom: Effectively serves this role among Louise's team.
  • Telepath: Communicates this way. Once she evolves into Kirlia, Esprit is even able to talk to Louise, and quickly begins acting as a translator between Louise and her Pokémon so that their trainer can know exactly what they're saying.

Auspice (Absol)

The fourth Pokémon to join Louise's team, Auspice is unique in that she sought out Louise rather than the two of them meeting by chance. As an Absol, Auspice is able to sense when disasters are near, and she can tell that Louise will be at the center of many in the near future. In an effort to try and avert them as they come, Auspice willingly joins Louise's team following their second encounter with Team Flare during their attempt to steal fossils from the Ambrette Town Museum of Natural History.
  • Bearer of Bad News: As an Absol, can detect when disasters are about to occur. Saito spotting her at the Pokémon Daycare when they arrive is the first hint that something bad is about to happen, a prediction that proves to be correct when Team Flare attacks that night. It happens again in Ambrette Town, where she leads Saito and Louise to a robbery in progress by another Team Flare cell currently trying to steal fossils and the fossil revitalization equipment. It is after this event that Auspice joins Louise's team.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Is a Dark-type, yet is genuinely a noble Pokémon who wants to keep people safe. It's why she joined Louise's team in the first place.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Is a very fast and sturdy Pokémon capable of dishing out tremendous amounts of damage.
  • My Greatest Failure: Views her failure to predict Team Flare's attack on Cyllage this way, given how the whole reason why she joined Louise in the first place was to prevent such disasters from occurring.
    • Also takes her going berserk while testing Mega Evolution for the first time badly, blaming herself more than anything else for almost hurting her teammates.
  • Sinister Scythe: Has a scythe-like horn on her head which she uses as a blade during combat.
  • Spider-Sense: Uses her natural ability to detect danger during combat, allowing her to more easily dodge attacks sent her way. It's not infallible, though, and she can get hit.
  • Super Mode: Is capable of Mega Evolution after Louise finds an Absolite.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Unfortunately succumbs to this following her first attempt at Mega Evolution. It takes the rest of Louise's and Saito's teams alongside Derflinger just to put her down before she seriously injured someone.
  • Winged Unicorn: Grows wings when Mega Evolving. Somewhat {{Subverted}, though, as they're not actually wings, merely hairs standing up on end in a wing-like pattern.
  • Wings Do Nothing: Despite seemingly growing wings, they're not actually wings as they're merely an aesthetic change. They don't actually give her flight, or even the ability to glide.

Gène (Eevee)

The fifth addition to Louise's team. An easygoing Pokémon, Gène is able to easily go with the flow in any given situation, easily accepting that Louise is from another world upon being told for the first time.
  • Always Accurate Attack: Frequently makes use of Swift, which always manages to hit his target no matter what they do unless they get very clever and lucky.
  • Determinator: One of the most determined Pokémon on Louise's team, best exemplified during her gym battle against Korrina and her Mega Medicham. When everyone else on Louise's team fell, Gène was able to stay standing and finish Medicham off, giving Louise the victory.
  • Freak Out: Has a minor one when Louise takes him to an evolution stone emporium to see what type of Pokémon he might want to evolve into. While Louise didn't intend to make any decision that day, or even anytime soon, nonetheless Gène was still overwhelmed with so many options for an irreversible choice, giving him a panic attack. Luckily, Louise recognizes this immediately and pulls him out of the situation, comforting him by telling Gène that they don't have to make a decision until he is ready.
  • Mellow Fellow: Easily the most chill Pokémon on Louise's team, able to accept and come to grips with nearly any situation he comes across.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Given how accepting of everything Gène appeared to be up to that point, Louise honestly thought taking him to browse evolution stones to get an idea of what he wanted to evolve into, with no intention of actually choosing anything at that point, would be perfectly fine. Instead, Gène gets overwhelmed and almost has a panic attack at the prospect of making such an irreversible decision. Louise later admits that she was wrong to do that.
  • Power Copying: Knows the move Copycat, which allows Gène to use the last move that an opponent used against him. This is how he was able to beat Korrina, as he used the move to copy Medicham's High-Jump Kick, allowing him to finish Medicham off.
  • The One Guy: Until Guerrier joined, he was the only male Pokémon on Louise's team.

Guerrier (Bisharp)

The sixth addition to Louise's team. He joins after Louise bests him in combat with Brennaraki
  • I Owe You My Life: Decided to join Louise's team because she saved his life (after giving her a challenge to make sure that she was worth following, of course).
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Guerrier's pack was especially large and strong because he avoided conflict with humans whenever possible. Other packs which were more overtly aggressive towards humans are dealt with by trainers, and Guerrier's pack would absorb the survivors.
  • Might Makes Right: Still subscribes to this philosophy from his time as pack leader. Notably, he approves of Terre's mage-dominated society because it's only natural that the stronger magic wielders would dominate the weaker peasants.
  • Old Soldier: By far the oldest member of Louise's team and an experienced veteran from being a pack leader for a group of wild Pawniards before he was ousted by his treacherous second-in-command.
  • Training from Hell: Puts Maindo through the ringer by incessantly pursuing him so he can show the insubordinate Kirlia what his limits are.
  • Undying Loyalty: Is fiercely loyal to Louise for saving his life after he was ousted from his pack.

     Saito Hiraga
A young boy from Unova who started his own Pokémon Journey around the same time Louise started hers. While they didn't start off on the right foot, he quickly becomes Louise's best friend and travelling companion as they both compete for the same goal: Pokémon League Champion.
  • Adaptational Nationality: When taking into consideration the real-world inspirations for the various regions of Pokémon, with Generations I-IV being based off of areas of Japan. In Outsiders, his parents are from Kanto, while he himself was born in Unova, making him a Japanese-American by real-world standards rather than fully Japanese.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: His relationship with Louise is much more mutually supportive than the nearly toxic and abusive relationship he had with her in canon.
  • Best Friend: Becomes this with Louise.
  • Berserk Button: Harming Louise in any way eventually becomes this. This is brought to the forefront in the aftermath of Team Flare's attack on Cyllage City, where Louise was nearly killed by Toxapex venom and had her blood stolen by Team Flare Operatives pretending to be nurses. When he finds trackers embedded into their Pokédexes by said operatives, he gets so infuriated that he unjustifiably accuses Elizabeth Collette for what happened to Louise.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Of a sort, given how he is only a year older than Louise herself. Given how Saito has grown up around Pokémon his entire life, he understandably knows a lot more about Pokémon and Pokémon Battling than Louise does. He often gives her advice on how best to training. As Louise has grown more used to Pokémon and developed her own battling strategy, he does his less and less in favor of a more equal exchange.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: While Saito is by no means dumb, he generally is a laid back, easygoing guy who's able to get along with almost anyone. But, at the same time, he is still a very competent Pokémon Trainer, and when sufficiently angered has no qualms in unleashing his full expertise.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The Fighter to Louise's Mage.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Technically has this with Louise, seeing as how both are competing for the same goal of becoming the Kalos region's Pokémon Champion, an position that obviously only one of them can hold.
  • Has a Type: When Aile and Tanuki observe that Maindo likes "prim, proper girls that just so happen to have a violent side", they also note that that seems to be Saito's type, as well.
  • Helicopter Parents: Saito wasn't able to start his Pokémon Journey, something that typically happens when they turn ten, until he was seventeen because his parents wouldn't let him. That and his family having to constantly move around due to his parents' jobs. This led to him growing self-conscious about not being able to take part in the adventures that his friends were, and when he was finally able to start his Journey in Unova, only to have to move again to Kalos and pick it back up, he went about it without looking back. He still loves his parents, though.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Justified, given how Saito is constantly on the road and thus doesn't have the space to pack more clothing options to change into other than a pair of sleepwear.
  • Nice Guy: Saito is genuinely a good guy, and is one of the reasons why he ends up becoming Louise's best friend so quickly after they meet. While they didn't get off on the best foot, he still is extremely considerate, helpful, and supportive to Louise, something she greatly appreciates.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Effectively gives this to Elizabeth after she challenges him to a Pokémon Battle after he unjustifiably accuses Elizabeth of Louise having her DNA stolen by Team Flare. As he is a much better trainer than Elizabeth can even hope to be, he completely demolishes her team without losing a single member until she's only left with a fully-evolved Machamp that doesn't even listen to her. Even then, he's still able to overcome the power gap and win the battle.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Blue to Louise's Red.
  • Tranquil Fury: In contrast to Louise, who tends to get fiery when angered, Saito simply gets frighteningly calm.

     Saito's Pokémon

General/Multiple

  • Blood Knight: As with nearly all Pokémon, Saito's love the thrill of a good battle.
  • Theme Naming: All of them have Japanese words for names, fitting Saito being the Pokemon equivalent of Japanese-American.
  • True Companions: For the most part, with the notable exception of Maindo, all of Saito's Pokémon are intensely loyal to him.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Tengu and Odachi are female, the other four are male.

Ronin (Oshawatt —> Dewott)

Saito's starter, an Oshawatt he received in the Unova region before the story began.
  • The Comically Serious: Ronin tends to act as though he were an actual samurai. The other Pokémon like to poke fun at this.
  • Everything's Better with Samurai: Clearly believes this as he tries to stylize himself after them in terms of mannerisms.
  • Non-Indicative Name: A ronin is a masterless samurai, while Ronin has a master in the form of his trainer, Saito.

Tanuki (Riolu)

The first addition to Saito's team, caught in Unova before they moved to Kalos. Unlike most Riolu, Tanuki is very light-hearted and enjoys pulling pranks.
  • The Prankster: Tanuki is very fond of pulling pranks whenever possible. This actually led to his capture; Saito called one of Tanuki's pranks unoriginal, leading to a prank war between them, and the Riolu was so impressed that he joined Saito's team. Incidentally, his Ability is also Prankster.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Heavily downplayed; Tanuki's pride sometimes leads him to disobey Saito's instructions, but Saito usually doesn't mind beyond mild annoyance. Later on, though, Wikstrom explains that Tanuki is actually subconsciously looking down on Saito, which comes as a shock to both of them. They subsequently make an effort to work on their teamwork, though Tanuki's hesitance to listen to Saito gets him quickly defeated in the Cyllage Gym.

Maindo (Ralts —> Kirlia)

The third Pokémon to join Saito's team, the first he caught in Kalos during their first visit to Lumiose City. In contrast to the rest of his team, Maindo is a rude, abrasive Pokémon who delights in tormenting others, frequently getting on everyone's skin.
  • Batman Gambit: The entire point of his constant belittling and outright bullying to the rest of his party was in the hopes that, eventually, Saito would have enough and release him. This is because he didn't want to be captured in the first place. His plan ultimately does succeed after he sends Louise running away in tears after her blunder with Auspice's Mega Evolution. At the same time, it gets drilled into his head how absolutely unnecessary his plan actually was, for had he simply asked Saito to release him, he would've done so willingly.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Has one towards Odachi, whom he scolds when she nearly falls to the ground when trying to climb up and see him. He also shows concern about her apparently poor eyesight.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: He's extremely difficult to get along with, frequently taunting his trainer and fellow Pokémon for seemingly no reason. At the same time, however, when the situation calls for it he is able to put his negativity aside and work with others.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: As Guerrier points out, Maindo relies on his extrasensory abilities far too much, to the point his other, non-extrasensory senses aren't nearly as sharp as a result.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Maindo never actually wanted to be captured and hoped that by getting on everyone's nerves they'd eventually give up and release him back into the wild. It wasn't until his plan finally succeeded that it was pointed out just how stupid his actions actually were.
    • For one, the reason why Saito caught him in the first place was because Maindo outright challenged him and gave every indication that he wanted to be caught when Maindo kept up the fight rather than run away.
    • Not only that, but he could've also simply asked to be released, and while Saito would've been sad, he would've complied as he doesn't want a Pokémon to be on his team if they don't want to be.
    • When his plan finally did succeed, he's suddenly faced with the prospect that he, a city-dwelling Pokémon, can't survive out in the wild. Had Saito not had the conscience to offer releasing him once they get back to Lumiose, it was highly probable that Maindo would've died trying to get back on his own. Either from starvation, or from another Pokémon.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Maindo is a massive jerk and a thief, and loves to taunt his opponents, but he is horrified when he realises his Rainbow Rocket counterpart is an Axe-Crazy Sadist who is outright trying to kill him, and enjoys killing.
  • The Friend No One Likes: No one particularly enjoys Maindo's Jerkass attitude, and they mostly put up with him because he's initially one of the strongest Pokémon in the group. Odachi, who hatched after the others finally lost patience with Maindo, is the only one that currently has any positive real interaction with him.
  • Has a Type: From what Aile and Tanuki observe, he likes "prim, proper girls that just so happen to have a violent side". They note that, oddly enough, that also seems to be Saito's type.
  • My Parents Are Dead: His mother died when he was young, an event that he witnessed and subsequently shaped his sour outlook. This is something that Maindo refuses to talk about.
  • Now What?: Starts to get this feeling after convincing Saito to give up on him and release Maindo back into the wild once they return to Lumiose City.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Maindo starts off as one of the strongest members of the team, but he never actively trains to improve his skills or power. Eventually the rest of the team surpasses him, but he fails to notice until they give him a beatdown for hurting Louise.
  • You Fight Like a Cow: Maindo enjoys insulting others, and he takes every chance to mock opponents in battle. However, he often gets so caught up in the insults that he doesn't pay attention to what his opponent is actually doing.

Tengu (Seedot —> Nuzleaf)

Saito's fourth Pokémon, an easygoing Grass-Type who joined the group as they were travelling along Route 7.
  • Crash-Into Hello: How she and Saito met. She was busy eating from a tree while Saito was sleeping underneath, and she ultimately ended up falling off the branch and landed on top of Saito. Less than a minute later, she agreed to join his team.
  • Limb-Sensation Fascination: When Tengu evolves into a Nuzleaf, the former Seedot takes a few moments to inspect her newly gained arms, hands, and even a mouth, none of which she had before.
  • The Quiet One: Tengu tends to be very quiet and mellow. Maindo is especially annoyed that his Troll antics don't get a reaction out of her.
  • The Stoic: Tengu doesn't let many things get to her, especially Maindo's taunts which practically bounce off her body like nothing.

Shogun (Tyrunt)

Saito's fifth Pokémon, who was revived from a fossil at the Ambrette Fossil Museum.
  • The Berserker: Shogun is much more directed by his instincts than other Pokémon on both Saito's and Louise's teams. As a result, he tends to slip into them, becoming almost uncontrollable until he gets snapped out of it. During a training session, he almost attacked Louise because he fell into this state.
  • Fossil Revival: He was cloned from a fossilized jawbone Saito found in Glittering Cave.
  • Mighty Roar: Knows the move Roar, which realistically comes out as a low pitched sound much like an actual Tyrannosaurus Rex that shakes a Pokémon to their bones, terrifying them and causing them to retreat.

Odachi (Skarmory)

Saito's sixth Pokémon, a female Skarmory who hatched from an egg.
  • The Baby of the Bunch: By far the youngest of the group, given that she only hatched shortly before the third Gym. Unlike in the games and anime, Odachi starts off much smaller than fully grown Skarmory, and Nurse Joy advises Saito not to have her battle until she's grown up more.
  • Blind Without 'Em: Before treatment, she was nearsighted enough to be legally blind. Even after corrective surgery, she'll need to wear corrective glasses for the rest of her life.
  • The Joy of First Flight: When she gets to fly for the first time after her surgery, she's clearly enjoying the experience.
  • Morality Pet: She seems to be pretty much the only one on the team that Maindo will attempt to be nice towards.
  • Only Friend: Odachi is pretty much the only one who doesn't hate Maindo, as she hatched after everyone else lost patience with his Jerkass attitude.

     Derflinger
A talking Honedge who was originally from the world of Halkegenia. He was stuck in a tower near Parfum Palace before Louise and Saito stumbled upon him, and he decided to accompany them afterward.
  • Adaptational Species Change: Sort of. In canon, Derflinger was a talking sword, while here he's a talking Honedge. Brimir summoned a Honedge and, unaware it was a sentient creature, bound Derflinger to its body, destroying the creature's soul in the process.
  • Been There, Shaped History: Derflinger seems to have been more actively involved in Earth's history compared to his time on Terre, having served the Kalos royal family during several formative wars. Also applies to Terre, as Arceus and the other Legendaries did not take the means of his creation listed above well, and the Holy Lands were turned to desert by their retaliation.

     Henrietta de Tristain
The current Princess of the Kingdom of Tristain, and Louise's best friend and childhood playmate. Upon receiving word of Louise's disappearance at the Tristain Academy of Magic, Henrietta made her way over to lend her assistance, only to end up getting taken to Kalos by Mew following a failed attempt to bring Louise back with a spell.
  • Badass Cape: Wears a purple one over a white dress as part of her royal attire.
  • Blue Blood: A member of the Tristain royal family, and a descendent of Brimir himself.
  • Broken Pedestal: Has this mentality towards the institution of nobility in general after having to deal with selfish and self-righteous nobles for over a year, preventing her from being the ruler of all of Tristain that she wants to be rather than the Princess of Tristain's Nobles that they want her to be.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Henrietta, after the premature death of her father and her mother falling into despair, was forced to step into the role of Tristain's acting sovereign which she and everyone else knew she was in no way qualified for. Having to deal with petty and corrupt nobles and international politics, not to mention their biggest allies waging a civil war that they were poised to lose, only added to the stress. It was little wonder why she leapt at the opportunity to travel with Saito and Louise, viewing it as a much-deserved vacation.
  • Childhood Friends: Louise was her playmate when they were children, which blossomed into such an intense friendship that the two of them consider each other sisters.
  • Cool Crown: Wears one atop her head. Fitting, as she is a Princess.
  • Item Crafting: AZ teaches her how to make Pokéballs like the ones in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. After she uses one to catch Fleur, he gives her his toolkit.
  • The High Queen: Henrietta desperately wants to be this, but unfortunately court politics and intrigue prevents her from fully stepping into her role. She is, sadly, very much aware of this.
  • Lord Country: Henrietta de Tristain is the princess of the Kingdom of Tristain.
  • Making a Splash: Is a Triangle-class Water mage.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Henrietta is extremely beautiful, and she knows it, catching the eye of many men and women including Saito himself.
  • Not So Above It All: Henrietta, in order to get back at Saito for making her exercise, purposefully wore a tight-fitting swimsuit to Coumarine City's beach knowing that he, and others, would be captivated by her beauty and thus getting in trouble with a jealous Louise. She also pretended to consider wearing a bikini to shock Louise, despite having no intention of doing so.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Tries to be, but her young age, lack of experience, and the general belief among her country's nobility that she is naïve, prevents her from being as active as she would like.
  • Princesses Rule: After her father's untimely death, Henrietta's mother, Queen Marianne, fell into a deep depression. As such, Henrietta was forced to jump into the role of ruling the country in her stead, something she was not prepared for in the slightest. She is trying to learn as fast as she can but, so far, the reception has been mixed. Even her biggest allies, the Vallières, view her as naïve and foolish, unfit to lead and only followed out of loyalty to the crown, not herself.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Tries her best to be this, and to her credit she does make some very sound decisions such as keeping Louise's Void Mage status a state secret in order to protect her. At the exact same time, however, her age and inexperience often lead her to making more emotionally driven decisions.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: While her efforts to reform her country haven't been nearly as successful as she would like, Henrietta immediately drops whatever she was doing to help rescue her friend once she received word. Even to the point of putting off her trip to Germania to plan her upcoming wedding with the Germanian Emperor. Once she arrives at the academy, she puts in the maximum effort towards bringing Louise back, never once shirking from her duty.
  • Shipper on Deck: Quickly starts shipping Louise and Saito.
  • Sixth Ranger: Set to join Louise and Saito's party after unexpectantly being teleported to Kalos by Mew.
  • Tough Leader Façade: To Henrietta, one of the worst parts about being Tristain's Princess is that she can't afford to truly be herself as her subjects look to her for guidance and answers. Even when she has none, and she's forced to put on a picture-perfect aura otherwise it would be taken as a sign of weakness.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Her attempt at infiltrating the Team Flare-occupied power plant is clearly driven by her love of brave warrior stories, where the hero cleverly defeats the villains and easily saves the day. Instead, she finds out the hard way that The Guards Must Be Crazy does not apply and gets swiftly captured. The Flare admins further mock her foolishness and refuse to monologue about their evil plans, at which point Henrietta realizes that those stories are just a little unrealistic.

     Henrietta’s Pokémon

General/Multiple

Fleur (Snivy)

Henrietta's starter Pokémon, a diplomatically inclined Grass-type whom Henrietta bonded with while staying with Professor Sycamore.
  • Commonality Connection: Like Henrietta, Fleur struggled with trying to lead other Pokémon while at Professor Sycamore's lab and prevent fights from breaking out. As most of the Pokémon preferred to fight rather than talk, she recieved little respect from the others. This ultimately allows Henrietta and Fleur's bond to quickly blossom.
  • Green Thumb: Is a Grass-type Pokémon.
  • Gunboat Diplomacy: Utilizes this against a Queen Ariados in order to ensure Louise is let go safely from her web following her teleportation incident. Fleur made it abundantly clear that she wanted to resolve the issue of Louise peacefully, but if the Ariados and her brood wouldn't let Louise go, Saito and Louise's well-trained and powerful teams of Pokémon were more than willing to fight. The Queen Ariados, while not happy about it, does ultimately relent.
  • Martial Pacifist: Fleur doesn't like to fight if she doesn't have to. If she does though...

Mer (Feebas)

A Feebas Henrietta fished up at the Coumarine Seaside Amusement Park, this Pokémon was originally owned by a Trainer who treated it poorly before abandoning it far from its native region. Henrietta doesn't hesitate to offer Mer a new and better home in her team.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Mer was treated extremely poorly by their first Trainer and was eventually abandoned near Coumarine in poor health and deep depression.
  • Magikarp Power: Louise and Saito agree that the previous Trainer almost certainly had no idea that the seemingly weak and ugly Feebas can evolve into the beautiful Milotic.

Others

     Arceus
The Alpha Pokémon and the God of the Pokémon world. Getting fed up with people from Louise's world trying to summon a person or Pokémon from his world, he transports Louise to the Hall of Origins after hijacking her attempted summoning for the third time and declares her unworthy of trying to summon. When Louise decides to go on a journey to prove herself, Arceus takes her up on this and transports her to Kalos to prove herself, getting Dialga and Celebi to enforce Narnia Time on her homeworld. Arceus frequently and secretly checks up on Louise during her quest to see how she's doing.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Is full of Tranquil Fury when confronting Louise at the start of the story and led the Legendaries in rampaging across the Holy Land a thousand years ago in retaliation for Brimir summoning and tearing out a Honedge's soul to bond a mortally wounded Derflinger to it.
  • Big Good: Of the Pokémon world.
  • Non-Elemental: Normal-type.
  • Power Nullifier: For the past 6,000 years, he's stopped Familiar Summoning spells from summoning anyone from Earth, be they people or Pokémon and also prevents Louise's classmates, teachers, and family from bringing her back to Tristain.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: After Brimir summoned a Honedge and tore out its soul so he could bond Derflinger to it (Brimir was unaware the Ghost/Steel-type was sentient), Arceus led all of the Legendaries (that existed at the time) in rampaging across the Holy Land and reducing it to a desert in retaliation.
  • Rule of Three: The plot kicks off when Arceus notices Louise trying a Familiar Summoning Spell a third time after he'd blocked the first two and decides to transport her to the Hall of Origins.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball: Experiences this when trying to figure out why he told Celebi that Henrietta would stay in the Pokémon world before giving up as he created Dialga and Celebi to deal with stuff like that.
  • Tranquil Fury: Never raises his voice when confronting Louise at the beginning of the story, but boy is he mad!
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • At the beginning of the story, he delivers one of these to Louise over her Familiar Summoning spell.
    • He delivers another one to Mew when he learns the Mythical transported Henrietta (a high-ranking noble) to Kalos to help her find Louise. Only Celebi saying that Henrietta would stay (having been told so by Arceus himself) changes his mind.
