Sadako Maeda
Super High School Level Good Luck
The protagonist, a remarkably ordinary high school student who just so happens to be exceptionally lucky. After being chosen in a drawing for entrance into Hope's Peak, she received an invitation, which she accepted. She survives until the end and escapes the simulation they're in, choosing to care for her comatose friends.- Born Lucky: Not only was she accepted into Hope's Peak through good luck, but she won the acceptance lottery four times.
- Only Mostly Dead: Survives being attacked by Sora, but requires help from Monokuma.
Megumi Shimazu
Super High School Level Mathematician
A cheerful young girl, Megumi is the first student Sadako meets, and the two become fast friends. After coming from a background where she was mercilessly bullied, she came optimistically to Hope's Peak, hoping to get among accepting peers. Unfortunately, she's the first victim of the killing game.Izumi Mizushima
Super High School Level Filmmaker
An optimistic and excitable girl trained in the ways of using a camera. After the situation they're in is revealed, she tries to push unity and hope onto the group, making good friends with Emi along the way. She's the second victim, killed while out filming late at night.Emi Kanagawa

A reserved and shy girl, also an acclaimed painter. Responsible for producing quite a bit of evidence in the investigations. She survives the final trial and escapes the simulation.Hikari Suzuki
Super High School Level Chessmaster
A surprisingly brash girl who doesn't like her talent nearly as much as one would suppose she would, instead much preferring to play sports. Because of this, Yutaka and her become fast friends. She's the third victim of the game, killed by Kenta after sending a note to him with the intent to kill him, which she was partially successful in doing.Christina Hosokawa
Super High School Level Seamstress
An acclaimed seamstress, she's even created her own clothing line. Among the group, she acts as one of the voices of reason. She's the second culprit, stabbing Izumi in the back with her hairpins and leaving her to bleed out.- Cruel and Unusual Death: She has a sewing needle puncture her like an arrow as it goes up from the base of her spine to her throat.
Hotaru Hayashi
Super High School Level Coder
A quiet girl skilled in the art of computer coding, but that doesn't stop her from being rude to others. Her skills come into use at times, and she's bit of a behind-the-scenes motivator for the group. She survives the final trial and escapes the simulation, due in part to her own efforts.Yukie Kurosawa
Super High School Level Thief
An observant, yet seemingly aloof professional burgler. Despite her introversion and aloof-ness, she makes an effective leader for the group, keeping them together through many a trial. She's considered the fourth murder and seemingly executed, though this is a cover-up to make the other students think she died. However, the mastermind realizes that she found one too many things relating to him and decides to actually kill her.- Accidental Murder: While she didn't actually kill Ren, his death by hitting his head on the shovel is considered this since the fight between them was what caused it.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Since her execution was faked, her death at the hands of the false Kenichi turns out to be this instead. Her throat is completely slashed.
- Face Death with Dignity: Unlike the other culprits, she accepts her execution. When the false Kenichi comes to kill her, she doesn't fight back.

Daichi Fujiwara
Super High School Level Novelist
An analytical and intelligent writer whose works are popular the entirety of Japan over. He acts as another voice of reason between the group, and is also responsible for the successful outcomes of several trials. He's one of the survivors, and escapes out of the simulation.Yutaka Tsukino
Super High School Level Soccer Star
A loud and brash soccer player who has won several medals and gotten recognition and fame from it. He works as a great motivator within the group, despite some of the students' impatience for his attitude. He's one of the survivors, and escapes from the simulation.Kaoru Masafumi
Super High School Level Chemist
A rather suspicious and hot-blooded chemist who is especially interested in medicine. He doesn't react well to the situation the students are forced into, but other, calmer members still manage to reason with him. This doesn't work, though, since he kills Megumi, kickstarting the game.- Cruel and Unusual Death: He is dragged into a glass box and suffocates to death from toxic gasses.
- Deadly Gas: The method of execution used for him.
Takeru Yamamoto
Super High School Level Flautist
A polite and affable boy trained in the art of fluteplaying, he started in an orchestra and quickly got national acclaim. He becomes friends with Sadako, and is helpful in the trials. Due to a convoluted scheme gone awry in Chapter Three, he avoids getting killed and lives to the end of the trials, escaping into the real world.- It's All About Me: Puts himself above everything else, and it's eventually revealed that he put up a polite and friendly exterior with other people so he could get close to them and betray them, if need be.
- Took a Level in Kindness: He's apparently starting to feel remorseful a span of time after he exits the simulation.
Kenta Saito
Super High School Level Marksman
A friendly and cordial person whose aim is said to rival masters in the art of sharpshooting. He's also a jack-of-all-trades, which helps the group quite a lot when they're trapped in the stimulation. He mutually kills Hikari after a plot went awry in Chapter Three.Ren Kimura
Super high School Level Medium
A rather eccentric person said to be able to communicate with the dead. However, this results in a spat with Yukie after he reveals he's a phony, and his sanity gradually slips until he is invited to meet Yukie alone, and he attempts to kill her. However, this fails when he himself slips and falls, cracking his head on the ground below.Sora Sasaki
Super High School Level Actor
A calm, yet flashy boy known by most every girl in the country. Once in the game, he also ends up helping a bit. However, by the third chapter, he at last succumbs to the threat of having a secret of his revealed, comes across Kenta on his deathbed, and finishes him off. However, the unfortunate Sadako was there at the time, and he knocks her out as a result.- Cruel and Unusual Death: He is chained to a stage and pelted to death with stones painted to look like tomatoes.
- Hero Killer: Barely subverted, he hits Sadako over the head with a water bottle, and it takes Monokuma's intervention for her to survive.
Kenichi Inuoe
Super High School Level ??? Super High School Level Hacker
A mysterious boy who claims to have amnesia, forgetting not just the memories of what happened since he set foot inside Hope's Peak, but also his Super High School Level title. Once the game's kicked off, he acts as a bit of a straight man to the rest of the students. However, the Kenichi we initially see is actually an AI created by the mastermind, the real Kenichi Inuoe. The real Kenichi uses this AI to kill Yukie after she finds out one too many things regarding the school, and he proceeds to kill himself, making him the culprit and second victim of Chapter Five. For tropes related to the real Kenichi, check the "Mastermind" folder below.- The Atoner: Before committing suicide, he carves lacerations into his arms and face as punishment for the wrongs he's committed against the others.
- Driven to Suicide: After murdering Yukie, he decides the best way to help the others is to kill himself.
- The Mole: He's working for the real Kenichi, and is responsible for kickstarting Izumi and Ren's murders.

Risa Mihara
Super High School Level Astronomer
An excitable and cheerful girl responsible for making a few important discoveries in the field of astronomy. She's Daisuke's roommate and eventual friend, and also becomes friends with more than one of the other students.- Break the Cutie: She doesn't take Daisuke's execution very well. It's so bad that she can't even sleep in her own apartment and sleeps with Etsuko and Youko.
Ai Matsuo
Super High School Level Baker
A clueless but good-natured master of the culinary arts who happens to be especially good at baking sweets. She is found dead in chapter 3.- Kill the Cutie: Ai spends much of chapter 3 raising the group's spirits and manages to get on good terms with Etsuko who disliked her until that point. Then she dies.
Kagami Asahi
Super High School Level Supermodel
A fashion model with a bit of an arrogant streak, she quickly establishes her influence over the resort. However, not everybody is pleased with her attempts at it, and this leads to fights with a couple of other students.- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: It appears she really did care for Minami as she was the one least willing to believe Minami had attempted murder
Minami Minamoto
Super High School Level Poet
A calm and kind poet who enjoys smoking. She mostly keeps to herself, however, and has the habit of speaking in rhyming couplets. She's the Chapter 2 murder victim, killed accidentally by Shiori after he attempted to stop her from killing Tsukasa.Tsukasa Toyotomi
Super High School Level Tea Connoisseur
A polite girl who wears a kimono and enjoys tea. She gets very close to Shiori and is rarely seen without him. She is nearly killed by Minami, but has her life saved by Shiori. She tries to cover up his crime so he can leave, but his crime is figured out regardless.Inari Sakaue
Super High School Level Sculptor
An aloof and distanced girl who excels at sculpting. She mostly prefers to keep to herself, but gets somewhat close to Daisuke.Etsuko Sanada

Super High School Level Bad Luck
The protagonist, an ordinary high school student who happens to be very unlucky. His name was in the lottery to choose the school's Super High School Level Good Luck Student, and in an experiment involving said lottery he was chosen last every time. Although he accepted the invitation, he isn't happy about his talent. He is the first murderer, killing Ryouta Matsuzaki and is executed.- Cruel and Unusual Death: Clamped to a chair and electrocuted after a wheel lands on the one space that says "death" instead of "life".

An acclaimed musician particularly adept at playing the guitar, however he's skilled in more than just the one instrument.Kazuo Kago

An aloof and cold boy who's beloved by teenagers the nation over. He develops a hatred for Kagami, and the two end up fighting occasionally/- Last-Name Basis: Inverted, he wants others to call him by his last name.
Shuhei Yanagi
Super High School Level Fencer/Duelist
A pretentious and arrogant fencer who's skilled at it, but has more money than talent, and a level of pretension to match. He's the third victim.Yuuya Tachibana

A kind and friendly boy who excels at pole vaulting, but is completely ordinary in all other respects. He gets along quite nicely with a few of the other students.Kazuki Murakami

An intellectual and fairly lazy boy who managed to learn over 20 languages with varying degrees of fluency. He acts to keep the group on the line, and is effective at it.- Child Prodigy: Is able to communicate in at least twenty languages with at last some grasp of how they work at fifteen.
Shiori Akiyama
Super High School Level Acrobat
A laid back boy whose act is popular across the country. He quickly bonds with Tsukasa and is rarely seen without her. He is the second culprit, accidentally killing Minami in order to protect Tsukasa.- Accidental Murder: He never intended to kill Minami, he was only trying to stop her from killing Tsukasa.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Plummets to his death into a pit of spikes due to a snapped rope and a broken net.
