"I just want to be the featured pianist..."

The main protagonist of Noel The Mortal Fate series, in case you didn’t see her name. She was a talented pianist who was tricked into making a contract with a devil by Mayor Burrows that resulted with the loss of her four limbs and almost got killed. Seeking vengeance, Noel made a second contract with Caron - the same devil who took her limbs, to stop Russell's ambition.

  • An Arm and a Leg: As a price for her wish, Caron severed her four limbs. Later she regained one of her arms in exchange for an eye.
  • Anti-Hero: Out for Revenge to kill the people that wronged her as part of her contract with Charon, and will do some pretty low things to get the job done as she starts out a selfish jerk out for her own desires. But she's also kind enough to reach out to those around her that need help, gradually becomes a better person as her revenge shifts from Best Served Cold to an earnest desire to stop a horrible person, and Burrows being as evil as he is makes her eventual 'terrorism' against him heroic by comparison. Noel's significantly flawed, but she's also eventually the hero for a reason.
  • Artificial Limbs: Caron granted her two artificial legs after saving her from death. They came in handy when Noel needed to knock down a metal column.
  • Ax-Crazy: In season 2, she makes little effort to hide that she wants to destroy Cybilla in the cruelest way possible, and shoots the woman multiple times with a Psychotic Smirk on her face as she explains how she would throw her into the ocean. If Caron wasn’t there to awaken her, she may have stayed that way for the rest of the series.
  • Badass Adorable: Noel is a cute lady for sure, but she’s also the leader of a 'terrorist' faction with a powerful Devil ready to accomplish any of her desire as long as she strongly wishes for it. Then there’s that Fallen Angel form of her...
  • Badass Normal: Even prior to acquiring her Fallen Angel form, she was capable of kicking down a freaking metal column. Granted that it was rusted, but still impressive for someone who had just lost their limbs and was struggling to simply walk. She could also knock out a guard and Bomber, who are clearly big, strong men compared to her.
  • Career-Ending Injury: The loss of her limbs robs Noel of her ability to play piano - which was what her entire life was revolving around. As such, she’s sent into an Unstoppable Rage at the sight of the one directly responsible for it that day, Cybilla Becker.
  • Chain Pain: Upon receiving her Fallen Angel form, Noel is capable of manifesting golden chains with enough power to restrain a Demon like Ripper and even a Devil when combined with Caron’s.
  • Character Development: Comparing current Noel to herself in the first Season, she has gone a long way since. Noel the pianist was naive, gullible, easily let her emotions take over, and had the will to fight of a pampered noble lady - which is to say none. On another hand, Noel the 'terrorist' is significantly more cool-headed, assertive, and wiser in that she knows when to fight or retreat. On the right battlefield, she will struggle with all her might until her wish comes true, even if the final price may be her life.
  • Character Title: Even if you don’t pay attention to her Red Baron, the word "Noel" is still recognizable.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Being amputated and having to move around on artificial limbs is obviously not pleasant at all, but there’re occasions that they come in handy. Thanks to them, Noel can kick down a metal column to save Caron who is gradually overwhelmed by Bomber, or walking through a burning area to chase after Fugo without much inconvenience.
  • Determinator: As long as she wants something, that thing will be done. Even if it means becoming a terrorist and risking her own life to a devil without even knowing what price she will have to pay.
    • When faced with the trial from Caesar - which includes a shit tons of Razor Wind that almost killed Caron on the spot in just a few steps forward - and her health bar being reduced to its lowest, Noel still tries to reach Jillian. She succeeds, impressing both Devils in process.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: She is an Ojou who came from a family of musicians, and was a talented pianist herself.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Gains a medical eyepatch after exchanging her eye for an arm in the after-credit of Season 1. She switches for a cooler one as she changes outfit in Season 8.
  • Friendless Background: Due to her upbringing, Noel was rather distant with other people, and didn't have any close friend until Jillian approached her.
  • The Gambler: Caron commented in season 6 that she was quite good at gambling. Indeed, she could even give the greatest gambler of Misty the game of her life.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Has somewhat pale blonde hair and is actually nice and heroic.
  • Improbable Age: A 15-year-old terrorist who aims for the mayor's downfall with any force she can recruit, including a devil, three demons (one of them was a police), some mafia guys, etc... Really impressive, girl.
  • Interclass Friendship: With Jillian. Noel is a rich upperclass girl while Jillian is middle class at best.
  • Jerkass Ball: At the beginning, Noel didn’t seem bad enough to be an Alpha Bitch, but her damaged pride affected her so much that she vented her anger on Jillian in the middle of the celebration party.
  • Lady and Knight: She is the Dark Lady to Caron's Black Knight, as she was originally a high-ranking lady that made a deal with the devil and even in her Fallen Angel form, she still prefers the position of supporting Caron to confronting the opponent herself.
  • Lady in Red: At first, Noel’s dress was red, but it was tainted with blood so Caron changed her into a black one. Her casino outfit also features a red dress.
  • The Leader: Though not officially, she’s in charge of the whole 'terrorist' operation to take Burrows down, and as long as she’s active it will go on until the goal is reached.
  • Meaningful Name: Noel means "Christmas" in French. See Significant Birth Date below.
  • Ojou: Comes from the prestigious Cerquetti family, plays the piano, lives in a big mansion, wears a classy red dress, this girl at first even had a somewhat superior personality to match. However throughout the course of the series, she appears to become more down to the earth.
  • Parental Abandonment: After she becomes a criminal, her parents were harassed to the point of leaving the city and giving up on her.
  • Player Character: The main one; the time you control her is equal to Caron.
  • Psychotic Smirk: Has an impressive one in Season 2 when she tells Cybilla that she must take revenge against her as well. Even Caron, a literal Devil, is taken aback by that.
  • Red Baron: Her official demon title, "Witch of Mortal Fate".
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The whole plot happened because Noel wants to take revenge on Mayor Russell for tricking her into making a contract that costed her her four limbs, by burning his reputation as a mayor to the ground. She did it in a more straightforward way by barging into his mansion and company to find evidence of his wrongdoings at first, but now takes a more levelheaded and organized route once she realizes who she’s going against.
    • In Chapter 2, however, she was coming for Cybilla first. To Noel, the secretary was the one who directly took away her limbs, her piano, her future. If not for Caron’s interference, Noel would have thrown Cybilla loaded with four gunshots yet still alive into the sea, just like that fateful day.
  • Serious Business: Treats her failure to become the ceremonial pianist with as much anguish as one being killed, since her whole life up to that point has been revolving around the piano. She’s even willing to commit murder so that she can get back the "right result", and yet has to pay with her entire career and almost life for it.
  • Significant Birth Date: Noel's birthday is December 25th.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Noel is normally very polite as expected from a noble lady, but when having the upper hand on Cybilla at the end of Season 2, she started using degrading words to insult Cybilla while maintaining a faux polished manner.
  • Super-Hearing: Downplayed as this is just something she gained after years of playing piano. Her absolute ability to sense sound is rather fearsome as she can know which waterway is the shortest by hearing the echoes, or realize there’s a sniper aiming at her based on the gun-loading sound.
  • Too Dumb to Live: She was convinced to summon a Devil (which is officially illegal) and wish for the death of a man she 'believes' to be responsible for her loss in a heartbeat. And it’s a wonder that she actually followed Burrows’ words to secretly meet with him in an abandoned building in the middle of the night - luckily he only wants her to summon a Devil, because it could get worse. Of course, she paid the price and wisened up after that experience.
  • Took a Level in Badass: At first she was a complete burden to Caron, always whining at the slightest inconvenience and cannot do anything without his assistance, but she gets more badass during the story course. In Chapter 4, her wish proves itself to be strong enough to grant her the Fallen Angel mode, and Chapter 5 has her infiltrating a prison on her own, (unwittingly) kicking two asses in process.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Caron. They bicker frequently and Noel has no hesitation to press his Berserk Button, but they still look out and are willing to risk their life for each other.

Red-eyed Devil

"Devil Caron. I’m here, at your request."

The "Great Devil" who signed a contract with Noel in the demolished building, before realizing it was a trick by Burrows. Caron got angry at Burrows and saved Noel's life, proposing another deal to her, and they become companions on the journey of vengeance.

  • The Baby of the Bunch: In season 11, Caron reveals himself to be born after the Tragedy of Triela, which indicates that he is the youngest among the three Great Devils.
  • Badass Cape: Gains a long, black outside and red inside, fur-trimmed cape when transforming into a full-fledged devil.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: Wears a snazzy three-pieces suit and still kicks asses without problem.
  • Badass in Distress: He got knocked out by Caesar at the end of Season 4 and in the next season, he’s shown being locked in a cage under a dungeon, prompting Noel to rescue him on her own.
  • Berserk Button: Don’t call him a bird, or bird head, or anything related to bird. Noel is lucky since Caron has mellowed out these days, but those mafia guys chasing young Burrows were not.
    Frequent quote: "I'm not a BIRD! I'm a devil!"
  • Big Good: Becomes this to Noel’s faction from Season 8 onwards, thanks to being a Great Devil with power beyond what most members possess and a rational, cool-headed guiding figure for Noel.
  • Break the Haughty: The incident with Burrows years ago reduced Caron from a ruthless, prideful outer entity who would corrupt his own contractor for amusement to an imperfect demon capable of very human emotions such as fear and shame. He even isolated himself among mortal world for some good years out of damaged pride. However, this is for the better as Noel would be very dead with Caron’s old way of doing things.
  • Cats Are Mean: Caron hates cats, and gives this reason to Noel when she questions if it's because he has a bird head.
  • Celibate Hero: He tells Noel that Devils have no interest in a human’s naked body when Noel realized he changed her clothes and got embarrassed that he had seen her bare.
  • Chain Pain: The only mean of weapon Caron has is magically-conjured black chains that can be used for many purposes, both offensive and defensive. They then upgrade to gold when he shares the power of Fallen Angel with Noel, and have one more upgrade to white per his awakening as a full-fledged Devil.
  • Character Development: Throughout the series, Caron has become more and more mature as he comes to understand the meaning of being a Great Devil: finding his own way to grant the contractor’s wish without letting his pride get in the way.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Welp, he was evil, but betrayal and abandonment from his former pact partner seems to have done things to him. Despite being a Devil, Caron truly cares for Noel and his allies, and he fights by the side of those who were wronged by Burrows. In Season 2, he even stops Noel from killing Cybilla out of concern for her own emotional status afterwards.
  • Foil: He and Caesar are both Great Devils in a bird-like humanoid appearance who have contracted with a young girl and whose name starts with "Ca", but also opposite of each other in many aspects, such as their colour scheme, their life experience, their goal in regards to Burrows, and how they consider their pride as a Great Devil. As Caron grows more mature however, he starts to become more like Caesar both in appearance and outlook.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: After seeing Noel torturing Cybilla in Season 2, before she could do anything worse, Caron slapped her to snap her from her blind rage.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: As he admitted it, "Devils can be offended by small matters". He does seem to have better control over his anger than years ago where he actually slaughtered some guys for calling him bird-head, however.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partner: Formerly, with Mayor Burrows. They did everything together, shared drinks at night, and seemed to once genuinely enjoy each other’s presence, as Caron looks back at their shared memory without repulse despite their bitter fallout.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Young Burrows was not much of an ass as he is now, but Caron’s ruthless, sadistic way of doing things seems to have rubbed off on him during their time together. Looking back on those days, Caron only has himself to blame for all the shits happening now, having been such a bad influence. Then averted in Season 12, which shows Burrows was rotten from the start.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Even though he’s a powerful Devil capable of incredible feats, Caron’s technology blindness is clear as day. When faced with the concept of various technologies in Aquarius like the drones, he is visibly confused, and has to rely on Noel for further advancement since his only method to deal with them is to break whatever connected to them.
Noel: "You don’t know what a drone is!?"
    Caron: "I, I don’t really know machines..."
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: Caron did take offense when the mafia guys chasing young Burrows called him weak, but the mention of being bird-head was what actually sent him into murderous rage.
  • If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him!: When Noel insisted that she has prepared to kill Cybilla, Caron retorted that if she were to kill Cybilla in cold blood then she was no different than a mere murderer. This actually got her to calm down.
  • Lady and Knight: The Black Knight to Noel's Dark Lady. He is a through-and-through Devil who serves as her bodyguard figure, and handles most of the fighting with the willingness to accomplish anything for victory as long as his contractor wishes for it.
  • Noble Demon: He took note at Noel's strange reaction and got angry at Cybilla for tricking an uninformed girl into making contract, which was an offense to him. He also disagrees with Spica about the idea of "playing with contractor from a higher place" as he believes a Great Devil should accomplish contractor's will, rather than toying with them.
  • Our Demons Are Different: The only moments where Caron actually has the imposing authority of a Great Devil prior to Season 8 were his debut scene as he made a deal with Noel, and in flashbacks. Other than that, he is more like a superhuman with over-average strength and some magical tricks up the sleeves, but is still affected by exhaustion and prone to injuries as anyone else.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: His hair/fur/feathers grows longer in his final devil form.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: His outfit consists of red and black, and he is a devil who took Noel's limbs as the price of killing someone as well as Burrows' downfalls for his wish to be the mayor. However, he is actually much more moral than some humans in the series.
  • Running Gag: Noel constantly calls him a crow or a bird, even in serious scenes like Caron's awakening as a full-pledged Great Devil.
Noel *shocking face*: "You...You really are a crow..."
  • Super-Strength: It takes a lot of strength to yank a flying helicopter down with merely some chains.
  • Took a Level in Idealism: He used to be an incredibly ruthless demon who would stop at nothing to get his price, but by the time he met Noel, he has mellowed out considerably. Now instead of using dirty tactics and violence like when he helped Russell claim his position as the mayor, he prefers stealth and avoids confrontation as much as possible, and even ensures that Noel won’t dirty her hands in her pursuit of revenge.
  • Undying Loyalty: He will make the path of revenge Noel chose come true, as long as she wishes for it. In fact, he cares for Noel on a personal level and wants the best for her future, even if it makes things inconvenient for him.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Noel. They bicker frequently and Noel has no hesitation to press his Berserk Button, but they still look out and are willing to risk their life for each other.

Demon of Explosion

Fugo Dressel, or infamously known by the nickname Fugo the Bomber, is a demon arsonist who terrorised Laplace with his bombing activities. He kidnapped Jillian under Russell’s command in Season 1 and got arrested after being defeated, but would later come back as a valuable ally.

From Season 5 onwards, he is one of the playable characters in the game.

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Oscar.
  • Arc Villain: Of Season 3.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Crossed with Stupid Evil. Fugo's strategies pretty much boils down to "Hit it 'till it stops moving".
  • Berserk Button: Oscar is a living one for him. Also people he perceives as "weaklings".
  • The Brute: Put bluntly, Fugo is not one for strategy or subtlety. First of all, he'd rather just blast down anything with the sheer power of his bombs. Second, it didn't take long for Fugo to get frustrated in his skirmish with Noel precisely because his typical tactics of resorting to overwhelming firepower does not work.
  • Covered with Scars: His face and body is full of burns.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His parents died in a fire and he was scarred in said accident. Resenting Oscar for his illness, he decided to become a demon in order to become stronger. It's later revealed Jino was behind it all, in order to force Oscar and Fugo to contract with demons.
  • Having a Blast: A Deal with the Devil gave him the ability to create explosion out of thin air, coming with that is fire and smoke. To prevent Fugo from being caught in the explosion himself, the Devil kindly presented him a fireproof body as well.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Normally, Fugo is just a Mad Bomber whose decent face often gets hidden by his gas mask, but when he dresses up for the casino... Hoo boy.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Defects to Noel's side after finding out that Burrows and Jino arranged the accident that killed his parents in order to force him and Oscar into contracting.
  • A Father to His Men: Deconstructed. Fugo is fiercely protective of his gang, but at the cost of total subordination. Him playing leader also makes them desperately fight for his approval, which is essentially what kicks off much of the drama at Season 9.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine. Exuberant and sociable, but also the most volatile and impulsive member of the gang.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his harsh attitude, he appears to genuinely care for his gang and honestly wants to keep the city safe.
  • Mad Bomber: It's in his nickname!
  • Nietzsche Wannabe: Fugo often rants about how in this world only the strong survive and the weak ones deserve to die, fueled by his resentment over how "frail" he considers Oscar to be. He does get better after defecting to Noel and her group though.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He casually bombarded Jillian’s house and abducted her, with her being injured all over her body and the damage seems to extend to her eyes. He also didn’t hesitate to come for Noel herself, although he resorted to Caron after seeing Noel as nothing more than a weakling.

    Ripper/Oscar Dressel

Oscar Dressel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/36c89ecb_ba86_40d5_87ff_9be3471b54aa.png
Demon of Justice

Oscar Dressel or known by his nickname The Ripper, is a demon hidden within the police force and older brother of Fugo Dressel. After he was defeated by Noel and Caron, he defected to their side to take revenge on Burrows.

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Something he ironically has in common with his hotheaded brother, not helped by him being Made of Iron. His opponents have demon powers? Keep fighting. Vastly outnumbered? Keep fighting. Cough blood? Keep fighting. Lose limbs? Keep fighting.
  • Arc Villain: Of Season 4.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Even though he's aware he's being used as a pawn by Jino, Oscar is loyal to him because he supoorted him when nobody else would. He also defects to Noel's group after she shows him the truth of the death of his parents and helps him reunite with Fugo.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He's very protective towards Fugo, even if the latter finds him annoying.
  • Big Damn Hero: He comes to Fugo’s rescue when the latter is overwhelmed by Jino at the end of Season 6.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Is extremely self-righteous, and sees Jino as automatically good and Noel as automatically evil and that Fugo has been "tainted" and it's his job to save him. He does mellow down after joining Noel's group.
  • Butt-Monkey: If there's someone about to get horribly hurt, it's most likely Oscar. He gets pushed around by Jino, Fugo looks down on him because he's sick and too soft-hearted, was beaten by Noel and Caron in their first encounters with him, was maimed by Caesar on Jillian's orders and was captured and tortured by Ribellio and Spica for over a month. Also Ribellio reveals that he never got much respect back in his police officer days and was mocked as "Jino's attack dog".
  • Cool Big Bro: Tries to be this to Fugo and later, Noel.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His parents died in a fire, was separated from his little brother and no relatives wanted to take him in because of his illness. He decides to become an police officer to protect others, but finds out Fugo has become a demon delinquent. Jino convinces him to do a demon contract if he wants to save his brother. It's later revealed Burrows and Jino were behind it all, in order to force Oscar and Fugo to contract with demons.
  • Delicate and Sickly: He spent the first two years of his life in an oxygen tent due to severe asthma and for years was smaller and frailer than the other kids. He's managed to catch up, but he doesn't like to be reminded about his childhood illness and can be shy and standoffish.
  • Disappointing Older Sibling: To Fugo due to his weak health.
  • Distressed Dude: Oscar is captured by Ribellio's forces in Chapter 7 and is tortured for over a month so he'll spill the beans about Noel's location. He's saved by Noel and Caron in the end of the chapter though.
  • Dual Wielding: He wields 2 swords at the same time.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Defects to Noel's side after finding out that Burrows and Jino arranged the accident that killed his parents in order to force him and Fugo into contracting. And because Noel helped him reunite with Fugo.
  • Honor Before Reason: His most defining trait. Oscar insists on charging ahead and "destroying evil" no matter what the odds are against him. Even after defecting to Noel's group, he stays true to his ideals.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Oscar wants to be the one to save Fugo so badly that he's willing to kill Noel and Caron just so they won't. Thankfully he changes his mind after he reunites with Fugo.
  • Made of Iron: As a result of his demon contract....Which is convenient, since he's prone to hurt himself all the time (see Butt-Monkey above).
  • Nice Guy: And possibly the kindest of the gang too. Such as still showing sympathy to Jino even after finding out he was behind the deaths of his parents. He's also the most concerned for Noel after her demon contract takes a toll on her health.
  • Red Baron: Has 2 of them: "The Ripper" and "Demon Slasher". Also, his official demon title is Demon of Justice.
  • Training from Hell: He subjected himself to one of these in order to be accepted by the police force.
  • Sickly Child Grew Up Strong: Who would believe the little kid who was bedridden for most of his childhood is now a badass police officer? Though to be fair, becoming a demon also takes a part in curing his sickly physical status.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Is one to Jino, quite obviously to everyone but him.

    Jillian Littner (SPOILER UNMARKED

Jillian Littner

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f51a34a0_648a_45f3_be0a_359cbeffc41f.png
Witch of Paranoia

Noel's piano practice partner and best friend, whose victory at the competition to become ceremonial pianist caused all the events to kickstart. She got kidnapped by Bomber under Burrows' order in season 1 to lure Noel out of her hideout. After being rescue, she has Burrows make her a demon in order to bring her ideal "Noel" back.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Such obsession is not mere friendship at all. The Yonkoma, which is hilariously canon diverge, even turns her into an obsessive lesbian whose feeling for Noel seems to have reached a sexual level.
  • Arc Villain: Of Season 7.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Helps Noel and Caron in Season 13, revealing she has inherited Caesar's powers and using his old Razor Wind to take down Burrows' minions.
  • Brought Down to Normal: In Season 7, Caesar gave up the deal between them to return Jillian her senses. Averted in Season 13, when it's revealed that breaking the contract resulting in him passing his powers to her.
  • Character Development: Initially she's obsessed with how "perfect" Noel is and is determined to hurt and kill others to stop her from becoming a terrorist. She also sees Caesar as a weapon. Eventually she realizes that she doesn't love Noel, but rather the super-idealized version of her that only exists in her head and she comes to see her as an equal. She also mourns Caesar's death, admitting that he was more than a tool to her.
  • Damsel in Distress: Burrows makes Bomber kidnap her in Season 1 to lure Noel out of her hideout, and Noel’s objective is to rescue her before Jillian can be harmed further without having to risk Noel’s own safety.
  • Determinator: Jillian will stop at nothing in order to have Noel back to her, be it making a Deal with the Devil, going after a literal Devil’s head, or planing on backstabbing the one who helped her seal the aforementioned deal in first place since he’s the one responsible for Noel’s situation.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: She’s also a pianist like Noel. Though she comes from the middle class and doesn’t have the same inherent high-class aura as Noel, she’s still quite ladylike in manner and looks quite elegant in her new outfit too.
  • Ethereal White Dress: She has a costume switch from her homely blue dress to an elegant white dress once she becomes a Demon.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Jillian was just a middle-class civilian with no means to defend herself, and was even the Damsel in Distress of Season 1. Some seasons later and she is out for Caron’s blood with a Great Devil under her command in order to take her Noel back.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Prior to the event of the game, Jillian has always worshiped Noel like a goddess of perfection. Knowing the present Noel is no longer her "ideal Noel", she made a deal with the devil in order to bring her "ideal Noel" back. After Noel and Caron defeat her and Caesar, she returns to her senses and comes to accept the new Noel.
    • Loving a Shadow: Her obsession with Noel falls into this category. She idealizes Noel, to the point she's devastated once she becomes a terrorist and not her "Ideal Noel" anymore. In Chapter 5, Noel lampshades that Jillian fails to understand how she thinks, what motivates her, or how her time seeking revenge on Burrows has affected her.
  • Innocently Insensitive: At first when she heard the result, Noel was still composed and trying to cope with her loss, but then Jillian keeps talking to her about how Noel is worthier than her to be the ceremonial pianist and that Jillian ‘doesn’t deserve it’. Needless to say, Noel snaps.
  • Interclass Friendship: With Noel. She is a rich upperclass girl while Jillian is middle class at best. Which is why Jillian wonders how someone so "privileged" would take any interest in her.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Personal feelings aside, Noel's demon contract takes a toll on her health and using Demon Linker requires Cast from Lifespan, so distrust of Caron was still partially justified. Which Oscar and Fugo painfully lampshade in Season 12.
  • Only Friend: Initially, to Noel. As such, she is desperate to save Jillian from Bomber even though it means risking her own safety.
  • Pet the Dog: It's indicated she still treated Caesar kindly enough despite claiming to see him as a mere tool. Which results in his Heroic Sacrifice for her in Season 7.
  • Purple Is Powerful: She has purple eyes and manages to contract with Caesar, the Devil of Eternity who wiped the floor with Caron himself several times. She then also Took a Level in Badass herself.
  • Sense Loss Sadness: The price she paid for Caesar is her five senses. When Jillian realized she could no longer see well in Season 5, she was understandably freaked out. Thankfully she gets better when Caesar breaks their contract.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Season 13 reveals that Cesar breaking the contract not only resulted in Jillian regaining her senses, but also passed all his powers to her.
  • Walking Spoiler: At first she was only presented as Noel’s friend and a plot device, but most of her characteristics are made after her sudden announcement as a demon.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Burrows messed around with the result to make Jillian the winner so that he could lure Noel - who would be vulnerable after her anger outburst and damaged pride - into making a Deal with the Devil.
  • Yandere: Her dynamic with Noel can be counted as one. She’s willing to hurt anyone that dared to corrupt her "Ideal Noel", notably Caron or Fugo, and even planning on eliminating Burrows for everything he did to Noel. She does tone down overtime and eventually supports Noel's path upon the end of Season 7. Especially shown in Season 13 as she helps Noel and Caron with dealing with a crowd blocking their way to Burrows.

Lauro Maestri

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8248ceaf_530a_4026_8e50_f434becc8bbb.jpeg
Cunning Ex-Mafia

A member of Fugo's gang. Since he doesn't have any special powers, he uses guns and his contacts with the mafia to provide for the team.

Before joining the gang, he was Lauro Maestri, a failed businessman who was forced to become a gangster for the Rosso family due to asking money from the mafia.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Season 9 focuses on him, Toad, Slug and their relationships with Fugo.
  • Animal Motif: Often associated with snakes.
  • Badass Bookworm: The most well-read of the gang, and one of the street smart ones as well.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He’s genuinely polite and pleasant towards Noel and her allies, but he’s not above threatening a woman to take back the money his teammates have struggled to earn.
  • Brainy Brunette: He is practically the brain and voice of reason for Fugo’s crew, a calculative man, and has brown hair.
  • Brutal Honesty: Calls Toad and Slug "dumb" without any hesitation.
  • Cool Big Bro: To the gang, as he's the oldest of the group.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Carries with him a gun with little recoil for Noel to assist Fugo, which comes in handy later.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Was a failed businessman that was forced to join the mafia due to bankrupcy.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic. Python's nearly unflappable demeanor and quiet nature set him apart from the other 3 more extroverted members of the gang.
  • It Gets Easier: His attitude on killing, which is necessary for him to survive.
  • Guns Akimbo: Once or twice he's gone in a bust carrying a gun.
  • Only Sane Man: Fugo and Toad have anger issues and Slug is a bit of a ditz. While Python has some psychological problems himself, he easily qualifies for this among the group.
  • The Reliable One: Is a retired gangster, which comes in handy after the gang is forced to be on the run in Chapters 8 and 9. Such as using his affiliation to the Rosso family to get a shelter for Fugo, Slug and Toad.
  • Stoic Spectacles: Wears glasses, and is a very cunning, composed and calculative man. They also have heat sensors, which allow him to avoid large crowds.
  • Waistcoat of Style: His red waistcoat is a sign that he used to be a Rosso member.

    Toad

Zoe Taska

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f0d5864d_e720_4771_ab88_5238f0ad27f6.jpeg
Rude Captain

A member of Fugo's gang, a sassy girl with a bad temper. Since she doesn't have any powers, she uses her club to beat people.

Before joining the gang, she used to be Zoe Taska, an abused girl forced by her parents to commit petty thefts before running away from home.

  • Abusive Parents: She grew up in a poor trashy household with violent, abusive parents who forced her to commit petty thefts.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Season 9 focuses on her, Slug, Python and their relationships with Fugo.
  • Ambiguously Brown: Has darker skin tone than others, but no defining ethnicity.
  • I Call It "Vera": Calls her club “Golden Spiked Dragon”.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric. A capable thug, but also bossy and aggressive.
  • Freudian Excuse: Comes from a rough background, explaining her desire to join Fugo's gang and her believe that she has to be ruthless so she and her friends could survive in the world.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Saying that she gets frustrated easily would be an understatement.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Has a bad tendency to inadvertently come off as self-absorbed and callous to others because of her lack of social skills.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Toad is fairly arrogant and tends to view herself as above her colleagues, to the point of calling herself the captain of the team when she's just a common thug. But she's deeply insecure and has low self-esteem.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She is arrogant, self-centered, blunt, and socially awkward, but she's got a good heart and is a very loyal friend.
  • Lower-Class Lout: Grew up with ignorant, bigoted, and physically abusive parents who forced her to do petty thefts. While Toad herself isn't as bad as her parents, she's still plenty trashy herself.
  • Sassy Black Woman: Very outspoken and not afraid to speak her mind.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Is forced to wear a pink cocktail dress in order to infiltrate the Misty Casino and manages to attract a few eyes with it.
  • Shrinking Violet: In contrast to her sassy persona, she used to be this in the past. Possibly as a result of her parents' abuse.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Slug, as both are uneducated thugs from broken homes.
  • Well, Excuse Me, Princess!: Constantly criticizes Noel's high class upbringing, considering her a spoiled princess. After she does warm up to her, she continues encouraging her to act less like a spoiled brat and more like the terrorist leader who'll guide them.

    Slug

Agatha Flattz

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/30f6f20a_d03a_4745_9340_2bd504e08c11.jpeg
Gloomy Eccentric

A member of Fugo's gang, awkward and socially inept. Since he doesn't have any special powers, he uses poisonous gas to stun enemies.

Before joining the gang, he used to be Agatha Flattz, an abused orphan who became a thug in order to be like Fugo, whom he admires.

  • A Day in the Limelight: Season 9 focuses on him, Toad, Python and their relationships with Fugo.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was ostracized in the orphanage because his mother was a murderer. When he tried to fight back and punched them, he quickly got outnumbered and they scarred his face.
  • Ax-Crazy: Whenever he gets to spray the enemy with poisonous gas, Slug breaks out of his sleepy attitude and laughs maniacally.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Slug a goofy, socially awkward Butt-Monkey, but he's a competent thug and is scarily good at poisoning enemies.
  • Birds of a Feather: Believes he's this with Fugo, as both got scars during traumatic incidents.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Comes across as awkward and is socially inept, but is an excellent poisoner and in Season 6 he discovers he has a knack for gambling games.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Yes, his given name is actually Agatha.
  • Fan of Underdog: Looks up to Fugo and sees him as his role model.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic. The most easygoing member of the team, but also the weakest willed one as well.
  • Freudian Excuse: Had a bad childhood with a cold, unloving mother and an absent father. It's heavily implied this ingrained his numerous insecurities and his desperate need to have someone to rely on.
  • Hot-Blooded: In contrast to his loopy persona, he used to be this in the past. Traces of his old personality are still there, such as when he poisons his enemies .
  • Lower-Class Lout: Grew up poor in an abusive orphanage, before he ran away to join Fugo. He sees his upbringing for what it was, but bringing it up around him and especially using it as an insult is a personal Berserk Button of his and is a great way to find yourself having a very bad day.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has a scar on his lower face, which he always hides. He got it as a result of some abusive kids in the orphanage.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Toad, as both are uneducated thugs from broken homes.

The Mayor's faction

    Mayor Burrows

Russell Burrows

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a81b9d8b_3895_4a56_a3bf_3de00a813c28.png
Mayor of LaPlace

The mayor of LaPlace, who acts like a Reasonable Authority Figure in public but is actually manipulating all forces in the city for his sake. Both Noel and Caron want to get their revenge on him by stopping his evildoings and burning his reputation to the ground at that.

  • Antagonistic Offspring: Eraldo's manipulation of him as a child has left Burrows with an overwhelming hatred for the man and refusing to become the mayor. He killed his father and while he did become the mayor anyway, it wasn't out of patriotism as his father wanted, but in order to LaPlace as his personal playground.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Burrows comes from a very high class family and is the villain.
  • Bad Boss: Downplayed. He's often genial towards his subordinates and generally fair to them, but he's very prone to lashing out whenever they screw up and often fails to take their opinions and advice into account.
  • Big Bad: Technically the central antagonist of the series, but is in truth merely an enforcer of the unseen antagonists: The Shadow of LaPlace.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: When first introduced, he acts very polite and respectful towards his subordinates and Noel. However, he quickly turns nasty and overbearing when they are less than prompt in providing him with what he wants.
  • Broken Pedestal: For Noel, who used to respect him very much and still had a hard time believing he was the one responsible for her current suffering. When she learned directly that he was a manipulative douchebag however, she got over her hesitation and started opposing him.
  • The Chosen One: The Shadow of LaPlace considered him the person who would return LaPlace to its former glory.
  • Control Freak: As demonstrated repeatedly throughout the series. Burrows is someone who tends to always believe that he's capable of acting on behalf of other people's best interests, regardless of their actual wants; and he tends to become infuriated when challenged. This tendency also ends up coming back to bite him at several points throughout the series, as he arrogantly presumes that he can control anybody that he allies with or does business with, regardless of who they are or how their specific interests might diverge from his own.
  • Create Your Own Hero: At first, despite Caron’s suggestion, Noel thought she had no right to seek vengeance as everything ultimately stemmed from her selfishness. Burrows ordering Bomber to attack and kidnap Jillian however led to her getting to learn how dangerous Burrows really is and sparked her revenge process towards him.
  • Daddy Issues: Resents his father because he thinks that people only saw his father in him, liking him because he was respectable and expecting him to be a good politician as well. He thus decides to become the mayor of LaPlace to spite his father.
  • Dissonant Serenity: He is surprisingly calm despite what goes on around him.
  • Exact Words: He wished to "become the mayor with his own strength", using his life as payment. How is he still alive after eight years have passed since he made the contract with Caron? By forcing the citizens into demon contracts so they'll do dirty jobs for him, therefore never using "his own strength".
  • Evil Is Petty: It's implied everything he's done, even becoming the mayor (a job he absolutely hates) is nothing more than an attempt to spite his father's dream of seeing LaPlace restored.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He often presents a likable and friendly front in order to win over people, even characters who are well aware of his nature as a crooked politician.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Though they turn out to be only cosmetic. He takes them off when he reveals his true colors.
  • Freudian Excuse: Was groomed since childhood to become his father's succesor, to become the mayor of a city he holds no attachment to. He's also extremely bitter about being an enforcer of The Shadow of LaPlace and rarely being able to do what he wants.
  • The Glasses Gotta Go: When he reveals his true colors, he takes his glasses off. As he activates his Fallen Angel form, he does just that as well.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: He wanted to be a normal man, freed from the destiny of having to succed his politician father. He even admits himself that this is one of his reasons for all of the evil things that he has done over the course of the series. After becoming a mayor, he realized he now was the puppet of the Shadow of LaPlace. So he decided he wanted to be free of everything, including God. To that end, he became a Devil himself.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Season 12 implies he does feel guilt for using Caron, Cybilla and Jino. However he brushes it aside, insisting that he wanted to be free of everything, including bonds and friendship.
  • Irony: When he was young he was always complaining about being raised to follow his father's footsteps to take care of Laplace, a city he has no attachments to. Then he becomes a mayor, gaining the freedom he long sought for, but can't leave because he made a contract with Caron with his own life as payment, so he uses the citizens as scapegoat contracts to create a Loophole Abuse. This winds up backfiring big time when he decides to be free once and for all by becoming a devil by amassing the faith of the citizens, only for Noel and Caron to twart his plans and put down for good, dying in the small city he always hated.
  • It's All About Me: A central trait of him's is his inability to see beyond his own wants and needs.
  • Jerkass: When he drops the "affable mayor" persona, he is insufferably arrogant and condescending towards those around him.
  • Mayor Pain: Not so much in the citizen’s eyes, who see him as a hero, but he has done quite the amount of misdeeds to become a mayor and keep his position.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He's the one who set up the contest in Jillian's favor in order to force Noel to do a demon contract to get rid of a political enemy. He also arranged the explosion that killed the Dressel brothers' parents and it's implied he manipulated much more people offscreen with demon contracts as well.
  • Mouth of Sauron: For The Shadow of LaPlace, who has imbued him with the authority to make decisions on their behalf.
  • Moral Myopia: He can't stand any form of betrayal but is happy to betray anyone to suit his own needs.
  • Nerves of Steel: Never flinches or changes their tranquil mood, even when directly threatened or being surrounded by terrorists who could very easily kill him.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Admits that he wants to become the Devil of Beginnings and rule the entire planet just so that nobody could tell him what to do. Noel lampshades how petty and childish it is.
  • Sanity Slippage: He becomes more and more unhinged as he becomes more obsessed with beating Noel and Caron.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: His standard M.O. Burrows happily uses his authority to casually break the law if it benefits him.
  • Self-Made Orphan: In the fateful night when the two mafia families were erased, he also killed his own father.
  • Tyke Bomb: From the day he was born, Eraldo raised him to become the new mayor who'll restore LaPlace. While Burrows hated his father for this and couldn't care less about the city, he still became a mayor anyway in order to avoid Caron's contract (see Exact Words above) and spite his father's dream.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: After Caron accomplished the contract to make him the mayor, but Burrows refused to pay the price and betrayed him. This result in Caron cooperating with Noel to kick his ass some years later.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The people of LaPlace call him a hero and believe just about anything he says, making it a monumental task for Noel to shake his reputation.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: His white hair contrasts the dark clothing he wears, and the color of his heart too.
  • Why Don't Ya Just Shoot Him?: While Burrows is normally willing to shoot people who get in his way, there are several times where he lets Noel walk away when the smart thing to do would be to just kill her.
  • Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Has gold eyes that signifies how untrustworthy he is.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: His favorite method of getting rid of allies.
    • Rigs the piano contest in order to force Noel to make a contract with a demon, using her limbs as payment without telling her. It's also revealed he's forced demon contracts on multiple citizens in order to get rid of unwanted people.
    • Leaves Cybilla to die after she fails to kill Noel and Caron.
    • Shots Anselmo in the head for failing to capture Fugo's gang.
    • Sends an assassin to get rid of Jino after he fails to kill Noel and Madame Coffin.
    • Finally he's killed by the Shadow of LaPlace to prevent him from spilling their secrets.

Secretary of the Mayor

The right hand of Mayor Burrows and his secretary.

  • Arc Villain: Of Season 2.
  • Boobs-and-Butt Pose: Her only sprite has her make the pose. However, it was meant to give her a mysterious vibes than Fanservice.
  • Brainy Brunette: Back to the day she was a student, she has always been the smartest. She then began working for the city council before she turned 30.
  • Classy Cravat: What that black thing on her neck seems to be.
  • The Dragon: Burrows’ secretary, who does things he cannot personally involved. She didn’t last long, though.
  • Emotionless Girl: Cybilla emotes very little and despite her polite attitude, her smile feels incredibly fake. The price she paid for the devil is her emotion.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Talks very politely to Noel and Caron, even when she was throwing Noel into the sea or trying to drown them to death. She throws the act once they pose a serious threat to her.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Not any better than Burrows.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Thinks Burrows was manipulated by Caron into contracting. In truth Burrows used Caron in order to murder his own father and fuel his research of the Devil of Beginnings.
  • Insufferable Genius: When she was a student, she thought her classmates were all idiots and looked down on everyone around her. Up to now, the only person she respects is Burrows.
  • Office Lady: Gives out the vibe. She is the cold and stoic mayor’s secretary who wears glasses and has a professional demeanor.
  • Shock and Awe: Her power as a demon. She can control electricity and any electrical device, including computers, phones, robots, etc...
  • Undying Loyalty: To Mayor Burrows. He is the only person she respects, and even willingly made a deal with devil if it pleases him. Too bad Burrows saw her as nothing more than a disposable pawn.

    Jino Lorenzi

Jino Lorenzi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/d6a20d2d_2ccb_497a_ba4a_253266e436e0.png

The police administrator and Oscar's adoptive father.

  • Agent Peacock: While he might be flamboyant and narcissistic, he's also a vicious and pragmatic combatant.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Acts like a huge tease to Burrows, but he also seemed to have feelings for Luce Marie when he was young.
  • Ambiguous Gender Identity: Biologically male, but seems to prefer being referred to with female pronouns. note
  • Badass Longcoat: That white longcoat with blue turf of fur announced us that he is not an ordinary police at all.
  • Badass Normal: Among a cast of demons and devils, he is merely a human. Season 13 reveals he used to work for the OCT when he was young.
  • Break the Haughty: Starts off self-assured and cocky, confident on his strength and being Burrows's close friend. But after he's betrayed by Madame Coffin and Burrows tries to assasinate him for his failure, he becomes convinced he can't trust on anyone but himself. He stops acting like a Sissy Villain and shows how ruthless and pragmatic he actually is.
  • Camp Gay: Flamboyant to the extreme, and shamelessly so.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: At the end of Season 6, he's mortally wounded after his fight with Noel and Madame Coffin. Oscar finds him and tries to treat his wounds. Jino, who had been subjected to a brutal Break the Haughty moment (see above) refuses Oscar's sympathy.
Oscar: Commander...run away with me. You are an enemy, but I don't plan on taking your life.
Jino: ...Don't kid me! You're just trying to catch me off guard while I'm weak!
  • Faux Affably Evil: When he first appears, he looks like a Sissy Villain, Oscar's only non-abusive parental figure, and possibly the nicest person in the incredibly corrupt and vicious Mayor faction. But as things continue, his true evil nature becomes apparent, and he finally ends up leaving Oscar for dead after he fails to capture Noel and Caron.
  • The Gadfly: Likes to flirt and tease Burrows. Burrows, being the insensitive type, usually regards his affections with indifference or annoyance.
  • He Knows Too Much: After he's gravely injured in the fire at the end of Season 6, Burrows sends an assassin to his hospital room to prevent him from spilling the beans about him. He survives though.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Hates "headstrong women" like Madame Coffin. It's implied this had to do with his resentment over Luce Marie.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After the hell Jino put the Dressel brothers though by killing their parents in an explosion, he gets a taste of his own medicine when he's trapped in a fire and left to die at the end of Season 6. He survived though.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He arranged the explosion that scarred Fugo and killed his parents in order to force Oscar and Fugo to contract with demons.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: After Burrows's failed assassination attempt on him, Jino decides he's out for himself only and tries to take down both Noel's group and Burrows.
  • Mutual Kill: Has the option to do this to Luce Marie in Season 13.
  • Not Quite Dead: In Season 6, he’s thought to have died in the self-destruct building with legs stuck under the security wall that popped up as Jino’s bullet hit the control panel. However, he’s revealed to have survived and reappears in Season 10.
  • Pet the Dog: Spares Oscar's life after their fight against Luce Marie in Season 13.
  • Precocious Crush: When he was a teenager he had a crush on the much older Luce Marie.
  • Sissy Villain: He's Camp Gay. He's a villain.
  • Super-Strength: Which enables him to go pair on pair with an actual demon. Though it’s unknown where he got it in the first place.
  • The Svengali: His relationship with Oscar, who he acts as a father-figure to but uses as a pawn in his schemes.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Used to be a teenager with an innocent crush on Luce. After she beats him up and convinces him that he needs to be strong and not depend on anyone to survive in the world, he became more distrustful and cynical.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: In Season 4 he decides to discard Oscar by setting Jillian and Caesar on him after failing to capture Noel and Caron.
  • We Used to Be Friends: With Luce in their youth.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: In Season 6 he tries to shot Noel, only for Madame Coffin to arrange a game of Russian Roulette with him. If she wins, she lets Noel live, but if Jino wins, he shoots Noel. Jino responds by just shooting Noel anyway.

    Madame Coffin

Coffin Neris

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/546a78ee_ddab_49c6_813c_321f754a4dd6.png
Misty Manager

The head of Casino Misty, who made a deal with a devil for the eternal excitement in gambling. Noel has to challenge her in order to gain control over Misty.

  • Above Good and Evil: All she desires is a good game, morality to be damned.
  • Affably Evil: Nicely greeted Noel when she stepped into her "territory" and explained the rule for her, and she even called Caron out for his stingy thought. However, once the game is on, don’t expect her to be gentle.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Exchanged half of her body for her wish, including one arm, one leg and an eye.
  • Artificial Limbs: Then she replaced the missing parts with prosthetic ones.
  • Arc Villain: Of Season 6.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: Shoots herself in the head rather than being captured by Burrows.
  • Coat Cape: Which complements her formal attire and adds an aura of authority to her.
  • Cool Old Lady: Her age visibly shows through her wrinkles, but she’s still a sharp-dressed Demon and Professional Gambler.
  • Eyepatch of Power: She wears an eyepatch as she lost that eye through her contract, and it makes her look even cooler.
  • Heel–Face Turn: After losing to Noel, she helps her escape from the collapsing casino.
  • Professional Gambler: She has gotten into gambling when she was still a little girl, and become professional since then.
  • Russian Roulette: Tried to pull one on Jino when he chased after the cast to the car park. If she wins, she lets Noel live, but if Jino wins, he shoots Noel. Jino responds by just shooting Noel anyway.
  • Thrill Seeker: Coffin says that she made her deal because gambling had lost its thrill for her, and she wanted every game to feel like life or death.

    Anselmo Ambrogio

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/65cf218a_4651_48e1_a81e_16dd129adc56.jpeg

The new head of the Bianco family, sent to capture Fugo's gang. After he fails to do so, he's promptly dispatched by Burrows.

  • Boom, Headshot!: Burrows fired an unexpected shot at his forehead, killing him immediately.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Likes to let everyone know that he's under the Bianco family's protection, which Burrows, naturally, is not pleased with.
  • Smug Snake: Thinks he's far more irreplaceable and intelligent than he actually is.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: He probably has the shortest lifetime of all characters with unique sprite in this series. In fact, he doesn’t even make it to the main storyline, only appears in the prologue of Season 6.
  • Worthy Opponent: Considers Python as this.
  • You Have Failed Me: Is killed by Burrows for failing to capture Fugo's gang.

OCT

OCT Commander & Major

The OCT Commander & Major. As a devil, he has power over fire.

In truth he's a spy sent to monitor Burrows and put a stop to his corruption and scapegoat contracts. He was also friends with Eraldo Burrows, Russell's father, and wishes to avenge his death.

  • Arc Villain: Of Season 10, trying to capture Fugo's gang.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Fugo, as both have fire powers and are seen as A Father to His Men. They also face against each other during the final season.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Helps Ribelio capture Luce, but not before proving to the superiors that she's a traitor.
  • Blood Knight: Unlike Luce, he sees the notion of fighting Noel's gang with pure enthusiasm rather than immense sadism.
  • Cool Old Guy: Is in his late fifties, but is still a tough soldier and can kick ass as a devil.
  • Expecting Someone Taller: Is rather disappointed Fugo acts more like a reckless thug than the dangerous terrorist he seems to be.
  • Good All Along: In truth he's working with the government to put a stop to Burrows and his abuse of demon contracts.
  • It's Personal: During his betrayal of Burrows, Luce accuses him of having this, claiming that he's doing it not so much for his loyalty to the government, but to avenge his friend Eraldo.
  • The Mole: Is secretly investigating Burrows's inner workings and secrets on behalf of the Shadow of Laplace.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: His breaking speech to Fugo is what motivates him to improve the gang's teamwork, allowing them to reunite with Noel, Caron and Oscar.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Eraldo Burrows. So when he finds out that his son doesn't care about restoring Laplace and abuses the people with demon contracts, Dratton decides he has to die.

    Ribelio Strada

Ribelio Strada

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/re_chara_0023.png
OCT 2nd Lieutenant

A hot-blooded teenager who is the 2nd lieutenant of OCT and captain of the 3rd unit. He develops a rival relationship with Noel. As a devil he has immortality and regeneration.

In the past, he was a member of the elite soldier squad SOLID-7. They were sent to capture Spica, who easily defeated them and almost killed them. Ribelio was forced to make a contract with Spica in order to save his friends.

  • Arch-Enemy: To Noel, as both are reckless teens getting roped into a demon contract.
  • Arc Villain: Of Season 8.
  • Ax-Crazy: As the price of his involuntary wish, he has to go through phases of extreme bloodlust at any time Spica wants.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed; Back in the day before joining OCT, Ribelio would pick any fight out of boredom.
  • Birds of a Feather: He feels him and Noel are similar because they were forced into demon contracts against their will.
  • Defector from Decadence: Leaves the OCT together with Spica and the rest of SOLID-7 after finding that Luce set them up to die.
  • Heel–Face Turn: While he was never bad in the first place, he decides to support Noel's cause after he's reunited with his old squad and finding out that Luce set them up in an Uriah Gambit.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Spica offered him to "become her new toy" in exchange for letting his friends live and he accepted. The poor guy has suffered since then.
  • Fiery Redhead: A red-headed Boisterous Bruiser.
  • Immortality: He is immortal because of the wish.
  • Morality Pet: To Spica, tempering her worst behaviors and providing her with motivation to be heroic.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Shows pity and sympathy for Spica after finding out she was wrongly accused for witchcraft and executed before becoming a demon, although it doesn't stop him from carrying out his duty when Spica threatens his friends and the world.

    Luce Marie

Luce Marie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/luce_marie.png
OCT 1st Lieutenant

OCT First Lieutenant and Captain of the 2nd Unit. Underneath her gentle and friendly persona facade, Luce is very sadistic and rather cruel, craving violence and a desire to be the strongest. As a Devil she has the power to stop time.

Before becoming a Devil, she was a woman who made a contract with Caesar to become immortal. The price she paid was her name.

  • The Ace: She led her unit through many missions without any damage and complete those missons perfectly.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She appears to be a mature, gentle woman in her first appearances, but eventually, she shows her true colors and turns into a manipulative, self-centered, and aggressive monster.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: Originally summoned Caesar for an undisclosed reason. But after witnessing his powers, she forgot about it for a chance to get those powers for herself.
  • The Dreaded: It's saying something when even the Combat Pragmatist Jino advices Noel's group to run away from her.
Jino: With that power of hers, it doesn't matter how strong any of you are. You'll end up in hell before you know what hit you!
  • Fatal Flaw: As it has been shown, her pride blindsides her and causes her to severely underestimate things.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Is unflinchingly polite at all times. Also perfectly willing to brutalize a young Jino, kill the guards in Burrows’ mansion, and backstab Dratton to take his position for herself.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: She is only willing to work for whoever she considers the "strongest" and will abandon them if someone comes along who better fits that description. Such as betraying the OCT in favor of Burrows. She later plans to betray Burrows and seize the Shadow of Laplace for herself, but is arrested before that happens.
  • Kick Them While They Are Down: Seems to be fond of this as she did that to Jino and attempted to do the same to Dratton.
  • Immortality: Thanks to her demon contract.
  • I Have Many Names: She's gone by numerous aliases over the decades, the most recent of them "Elena Droett" and "Luce Marie". Her real name is unknown.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: To the OCT, due to her not giving a rat's ass about mantaining order at Laplace, merely wanting to back what she thought was the most powerful player.
  • Not So Stoic: While generally calm, she freaks out after being defeated by Oscar and Jino. By the time she escapes the sewers and is captured by Dratton and Ribelio's squad, she's laughing maniacally.
  • Sadist: Outside of combat she's rather taciturn, but during combat she takes a tad too much pleasure in the carnage and bloodshed.
  • Time Stands Still: Her main power. Which serves as a clue of how the demon she contracted with was Caesar.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Of the OCT. While at least Ribelio and Dratton have their standards and code of honor, Luce Marie is greedy, sleazy and only looks out for herself.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Looks like she's in her mid-twenties, but is late found to be about 200 years old. She keeps herself looking young due to being a Devil.
  • Smug Snake: Fancies herself as something of a chessmaster, but pales in comparison to Burrows.
  • Uriah Gambit: After Dratton's defection, she tasks Ribelio and Spica to go to Triela Village, knowing the latter has issues with that place. She then sends SOLID-7 to dispatch Spica, knowing they resent her for what they did to Ribelio. Her plan is for them to kill each other so she'll take control of the OCT, but it fails thanks to Noel's invervention.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Was friends with a teenager Jino under her old identity as Elena Droett.

A group of seven elite soldiers, whom Ribelio used to be part of. After they were gravely injured in a mission to capture Spica, Ribelio made a contract with her to spare their lives, but was forced to leave the team. Since then, they've trained to become stronger to avenge their friend.

  • Awesome by Analysis: They learned Spica's fighting techniques after seeing it only once, finding out the Logical Weakness in her powers and coming up with ways to exploit it.
  • Badass Crew: You know they're a name to watch out for as the ones who defeated Spica despite being mere humans.
  • Badass Normal: A bunch of trained elite soldiers, with no power other than their skills.
  • Book Dumb: Nola, which she seems to be aware of.
  • Cool Old Guy: Gasperi, who also acts as the surrogate father for the team.
  • Defector from Decadence: Leave the OCT together with Ribelio and Spica after finding that Luce set them up to die.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: They manage to wound Spica, an absurdly powerful demon, in an act that not even Noel's gang could accomplish, thanks to learning her fighting techniques.
  • Easily Forgiven: Despite their grudge on Spica, they welcome her on the team after Ribelio accepts her as a friend. Nola and Amelia are even happy to have another girl on the team.
  • It's Personal: They resent Spica for what she did to Ribelio. Luce exploits it by sending them to Triela Village, hoping it would result in their deaths.
  • Meaningful Rename: They change their name to SOLID-8 after welcoming Spica on their team.
  • Smug Super: All of them know exactly how invincible they are, and won't hesitate to tell you how futile it is to try and fight them.
  • The Squad: A group of 7 elite soldiers.
  • True Companions: They always hang together and have each other's backs. To the point that after Ribelio was forced to leave them, they still called themselves SOLID-7.

The Great Devil who made a deal with Jillian.

  • All-Encompassing Mantle: Wears an all-encompassing black cloak when his real power was still sealed.
  • Affably Evil: When they’re in a place where the contract doesn’t have validity, he treats Caron and Noel as if they are honorable guests. It may come with the fact that he doesn’t really have hard feelings towards Noel’s faction, it’s just his contract to protect Burrows.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: It’s revealed that his scleras are black. It adds to the intimidation he has in his true form, though he is lacking in terms of actual evilness.
  • Chained by Fashion: Has chains wrapped around him as a kind of "limitation". He completely overwhelms Caron when they are unwrapped.
  • Cool Old Guy: Apparently old enough to call Caron "young" and gives off the vibes of a gentleman.
  • Cultured Badass: He dresses in a nice suit, serves Noel and Caron fine tea, and nearly wiped the floor with them a minute ago. According to Caesar himself, he studied human culture and has interest in tea and western-style furniture.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The second time they meet, he easily knocks out Caron.
  • Declaration of Protection: Jillian's wish is to protect Burrows. He abandoned the wish as well as the deal later.
  • Face Death with Dignity: As he abandoned the contract with Jillian, Caesar shows no fear or regret at the aspect of death, which Caron notes on. The white Devil then lectures Caron on what a Great Devil truly is before our main duo leave, and Caron actually takes that to heart as seen in Season 8.
”What the Devil is most afraid of is not death. It’s losing our pride.”
  • Foil: He and Caron are both Great Devils in a bird-like humanoid appearance who have contracted with a young girl and whose name starts with "Ca", but also opposite of each other in many aspects, such as their colour scheme, their life experience, their goal in regards to Burrows, and how they consider their pride as a Great Devil. As Caron grows more mature however, he starts to become more like Caesar both in appearance and outlook.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He breaks the deal with Jillian in order to save her life. However this also results in his own death.
  • Honor Before Reason: He prioritizes his contractor’s true wish over his own existence, and gives up his life in dignity to save Jillian.
  • In the Hood: The hood of his cloak always covers his face, giving him an air of mystery.
  • Invincible Villain: Though Caron and Noel managed to combine their power to take down Caesar once, it was when he was still using Power Limiter. Without them, the duo literally stand no chance against him, and he’s only removed from the scene by willingly giving up his life for his contractor.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite her treating him as a weapon, Caesar is fond of Jillian and even sacrifices himself so she won't have to die as a result of their contract.
  • Razor Wind: By gathering all the pains and sorrows of his contractors through thousands of years of his time being a Great Devil, Caesar can create a great wind that brings the pain to cut through the skin of those standing in its way. He raised them against Caron in the real world and Noel in his realm,
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's roughly 1000 years old and The Older Immortal among the three Devils.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Because of such long life, he grows exhausted and wants to put a honorable end to it by accomplishing his contractor's true wish.
  • Tea Is Classy: He invites Caron and Noel tea in his realm, showing how civilized he actually is contrasting to the almost animalistic behavior he had before.
  • Time Stands Still: Another of his powers.
  • The Worf Effect: The first time Caesar appeared, he intimidated Caron enough he (Caron) was forced to retreat, then there’s that second time he knocked out Caron for real (though to be fair, Caron was exhausted after a long fight). Caesar himself suffers from this when Noel and Caron teamed up to use Fallen Angel on him while he was still under his Power Limiter.
  • Villain in a White Suit: With his All-Encompassing Mantle removed, he’s shown wearing an elegant white suit, and he begins to display the power and sophistication not before seen while the cloak (and the Power Limiter) was still on him.

Devil of Death

The Great Devil who made a deal with Rebelio. At the end of season 11, she was welcome by Ribelio and his comrades as SOLID-7.

Before becoming a Devil, she was a 10 years old girl named Carla living around 15-16th century. After the townspeople wrongly accused her of witchcraft and executed her, the power of grudge and resentment transformed her into a devil.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: She died because of this. The people of her town shunned her because they blamed their problems on a star and she thought it was ridiculous, culminating in them accusing her of witchcraft and decapitating her for it.
  • Anti-Villain: Ultimately, she's not as much malicious per se as she is a bitter little girl who was mercilessly executed, blindly lashing out after centuries of pain.
  • Came Back Strong: She gained all her powers after her death.
  • Demon of Human Origin: She used to be a human girl before becoming a demon.
  • Defector from Decadence: Leaves the OCT together with Ribelio and the rest of SOLID-7 after finding that Luce set them up to die.
  • Horned Humanoid: A couple of black-turn-red-from-bottom horns on her head.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: The thought of an innocent ten-year-old girl being marked with hot iron and sentenced to decapitation is very unsettling.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: To sweet village girl to terrifying demon.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Spica is an arrogant brat who despises humans, but she does deeply care about Ribelio, even if she won't ever admit it.
  • Little Miss Badass: She has the body of a child and the power of a devil.
  • Meaningful Rename: Spica was the name of a star that just happened to be on the sky when a plague hit Triela Village, leading to the townspeople blaming it for all their troubles and later executing Carla for it. When she becomes a demon, she takes Spica as her new name.
  • Murder Into Malevolence: Once merely a young girl who didn't agree with her village's zealous beliefs, her unjust execution by the fearful townsfolk transformed her into a wrathful demon bent on revenge.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While she's usually playful and arrogant, she becomes angry and sullen upon receiving the mission to go to the ruins of Triela Village in order to capture Noel's gang. This is because that's the place where she was born and executed.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her widowed father and older siblings leave her to be executed.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Is over 500 years old.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Once she becomes a demon, the destruction she wreaks is subsequently explained as having been a storm hitting her village.
And just as they wished, I played the devil. By raining down lightning from above. I crushed down this miserable village. And that is the truth of the Tragedy of Triela, the tale of humans getting what they deserve.
  • Shock and Awe: Her powers are based on electricity.
  • Sinister Scythe: Her weapon as the Devil of Death.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Was a cheerful child who loved her mother and stargazing until she was accused of witchcraft and executed by the townspeople.
  • Was Once a Man: When Caron first meets her, he's surprised that she looks human, as demons often have a monstruous appearance. That's because she used to be human in the past.
