Viernes / Duke Barbaroa

Click here to see Duke Barbaroa
The Gold Dragon God, an individual beyond normal comprehension. His influence looms over Gold Owl, its alchemy, and a nebulous scheme to capture wizards and assimilate their magic power.

For a long time, Viernes had turned into a dragon of concept after losing his physical form. He created a sentient concept based on Duke Barbaroa, Elefseria's long-believed late disciple as his avatar, and subsequently created a alchemy guild known as Gold Owl mostly through his Alchemy specialty. Following that, he posed as the Guild Master of Gold Owl and the strongest "human" member.

His Alchemy specialty is in "Human Transmutation", the ability to create people.

    Tropes A-I
  • Always Someone Better: He (as Duke) is this to God Serena who claims that he cannot a candle to him and the Singularity Sisters despite his strength as a former Spriggan 12 member. At the same time, he intends on powering up Athena II so she will force the Dragon Gods to bow to him, indicating that she will be the most powerful being on the planet by far once her modifications are complete.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He intends to subjugate the Dragon Gods as their master.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: While Viernes did once possess a physical body as confirmed by Elefseria, he has since transcended it in his goal to become a concept, now acting through proxies such as the guild of Gold Owl and its master Duke.
  • Attack Backfire: What ultimately does Viernes in. Seeing Natsu shooting straight at him to stop his massive landscape-altering gold transmutation, Viernes unleashes his Breath Weapon... but instead of his usual gold laser, it's golden flames courtesy of Athena acting inside of him. Natsu devours said flames and uses this Power-Up to land the finishing blow.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He (as Duke) wears a nice looking suit befitting a dignified guild master and he is the strongest man surpassing God Serena.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With the three remaining Dragon Gods. He intends to make them his own servants using the power of Athena and later Athena II. Then it turns out that Duke is one of the Dragon Gods manifesting through the concept of a deceased man.
  • Build Like an Egyptian: Unusually, Viernes distinctively brings to mind the aesthetics of Ancient Egypt, resembling a sphinx statue and sporting what looks like a nemes headdress on his head.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He's not afraid to fight dirty to get people to lower their guard.
    • When Athena II is being overwhelmed by Natsu, Duke puts a sword to Wendy's neck and warns Natsu not to fight back.
    • When Erza attempts to attack Athena II after she strikes down Lucy, Gray, Rogue and Jellal, Duke hurls the unconscious and wounded body of Natsu at her to break her concentration as she stops to grab him. This opens her up to being knocked down by Athena II.
    • When Natsu powered up on his allies' magic manages to land some meaningful damage, Viernes decides to forgo any direct clash and just use a widespread gold transmutation on his surroundings in order to trap his enemies to kill or at least render them helpless without any chance of them fighting back. Were it not for Athena's interference helping Natsu beat him before it could be finished, it likely would have worked.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Viernes took on the form of Elefseria's deceased apprentice and gained access to his human transmutation alchemy. However, this is subverted when Zalam is revealed to be the actual Duke as an old man and Viernes was masquerading as the man in middle age.
  • Draconic Abomination: According to Selene, Viernes is an exceptional existence even among dragons. Specifically, he's a concept, a dragon that exists yet also doesn't, to the point it's impossible to defeat him through pure brute force and why she wanted the legendary dragon-slaying weapons.
  • Evil Knockoff: The present-day Duke we're introduced to is an older and malicious replica with an eyepatch and powered by the influence of Viernes. The actual Duke, a benevolent individual, died when one of his experiments with alchemy backfired.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Over the fake Duke's left eye, and in a guild that has access to body part replacement transmutation, this is rather peculiar.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Since he is actually a sentient concept, a creature which simultaneously exists yet doesn't exist.
  • The Ghost: The one Dragon God that took the longest to appear in person. To emphasis how much he's this, the supposedly deceased sixth Dragon God Dogramag makes a physical appearance before him.
  • Holy Halo: His dragon form has this but, since Selene describes him to be a threat to humanity alongside Ignia, he might be the case of Light Is Not Good.
  • I Have Your Wife: Upon seeing that Athena II isn't strong enough to defeat Natsu in a straight fight despite possessing Wendy and Rogue's Dragon Slayer Magic]], Duke quite calmly summons a sword and puts it right to the unconscious Wendy's neck, telling Natsu to not fight back as Athena II pummels him into the dirt.
  • Informed Ability: Serena hyped him up as a threat of great power, yet his actual performance in battle barely backs it up. While he can take a decent hit and he can use Whiteout to nigh instantly incapacitate an unready opponent, he's rarely shown fighting directly while preferring to leave his underlings to battle, and Natsu defeating him with at most half of his full power given he could only use Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic at the time with his Fire Dragon Slayer Magic stolen doesn't really do Serena's claim of him being even stronger than himself justice.
  • Impersonation-Exclusive Character: The real Duke Barbaroa is already long dead at this point, with the Duke acting as the Guild Master of Gold Owl actually being an avatar that Viernes would speak through after becoming a concept. Subverted when it turns out that the real Duke is Zalam.

    Tropes K-Z
  • Keystone Army:
    • He is literally the reason why Gold Owl and most of its members ever existed, as he sustained the entirety of Gold Owl's original guildmember, who were born through human alchemy and ceased to be when Viernes was obliterated. Thus, he shares the same page with most of his guildmembers (see below). All of the alchemic dolls made by him are incapable of dying unless Duke himself winds up eliminated.
    • Individuals whose existences began outside the guild, like God Serena, Athena, and the Signario Sisters, were the only exceptions.
  • Logical Weakness:
    • Although Duke can make living beings in the appearance of people, he cannot truly create natural-born humans like a divine power. His creations are merely sentient dolls, but they can harness skills of their own, and some of them lack basic human traits than make them unnatural.
    • While Viernes is tough enough to withstand Natsu's brute force easily, his golden armor makes him weak to both heat and electricity, making Natsu's Fire and Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic combo extremely efficient against him.
  • The Magic Touch: Viernes's magic power/alchemy as the Gold Dragon God gives him the ability to turn what he touches into gold, shoot beams of light out his mouth that change objects to gold on contact, and conjure gold coins in a rain of money. His ultimate attack essentially is just him applying this power on a massive scale by flying high into the sky and transmuting everything beneath him into gold. A reaction shot shows an entire mountain range beginning to rapidly get covered by his gold and spreading further.
  • Meaningful Name: His name means "Friday" in Spanish, which is doubly meaningful as in Chinese and Japanese Friday translates to "Gold/Metal's Day".
  • Metal Muncher: As dragons can consume their element for a power up or nutrition, it's all but certain Viernes can chow down on gold.
  • Nothing Personal: He holds no grudge against Fairy Tail even after they stopped Gold Owl from retrieving the Dogra Cores. He only targets them because he wants their Dragon Slayers' power to steal via Whiteout.
  • A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Subverted. He is impersonating the deceased former student of Elefseria who found out he wasn't very capable of magic, so he switched to Alchemy instead and created Athena.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: He refuses Enny Signario's request to kill God Serena for failing to bring back a Dogra Core, stating that there are other alternatives to upgrade Athena.
  • Really 700 Years Old: As Elefseria's apprentice, he's been alive for much longer than a regular human, but with the secret to his vitality a mystery, and he made Athena a century ago. This would be subverted when Elefseria reveals the real Duke died in an accident and Viernes assumed his form, masquerading as Duke for ages.
  • The Reveal: As he is a sentient concept, Viernes essentially is the guild of Gold Owl and its master Duke, which puts him in the spotlight during the Gold Owl arc, which is also the Gold Dragon God arc.
  • Smug Smiler: He is very confident in Athena's (and later Athena II's) power to surpass the Dragon Gods with a smirk.
  • Super-Toughness: Being made of solid gold metal, he can shrug off a punch from Natsu simply by having armored skin too rugged to harm and causing pain to reverberate through Natsu's arm. It takes the combined magic of his strongest friends from Fairy Tail, Sabertooth, as well as Jellal all enchanted onto Natsu to break through Viernes's scales, and even then Viernes remains standing and pissed off despite the backlash of Natsu's fire obliterating many of Viernes' golden constructs as a side-effect of his strikes. It takes another power-up courtesy of Athena giving Natsu more fire magic to eat to give him the strength to finally land a critical blow on Viernes.
  • You Have Failed Me: Effortlessly punches a hole through his supposed Dragon-in-Chief Athena - a hint at who Duke really is - and forces her to power down in order to recharge.
  • Your Head Asplode: Natsu powered up on the magic of his allies and a last-minute extra assist by Athena blows Viernes' head and upper neck to golden pieces with a Fire Dragon King's Demolishing Strike.

Gold Owl

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f0w8ljjagaq28ry_1.png

Created by Viernes mainly through Human Transmutation, Gold Owl is the top Alchemist Guild of Guiltina, which is distinct from a regular Mage Guild in that its practioners don't use magic but rather alchemy, which relies on acquiring precious or rare items to use as materials for their techniques.

    In General
  • Alchemy Is Magic: Downplayed; at first glance, their Alchemy is just Magic by Any Other Name, but it does possess distinct differences: it seemingly doesn't rely on Ethernano, but instead existing materials, even if those "materials" can be rooted in immaterial concepts like "bonds". Sai even admits to Gray that what differences there are would be a "pain in the ass" to explain.
  • Always a Bigger Fish: The guild is this to God Serena who remarks how low leveled Ishgal is compared to the larger world.
  • Human Resources: Among the "materials" they can use for their Alchemy includes the magic power of Wizards.
  • Keystone Army: With the exception of a few members and puppets, the whole guild originated from Viernes's alchemy and ceased to exist when the Dragon God perished.
  • Treasure Hunter: Their members seek out rare and precious items, but unlike an actual treasure-hunting guild like Slyph Labyrinth they're not interested in the treasure's possible monetary worth but rather its potential in their alchemy.

Guild Master

    "Duke Barbaroa"
The Guild Master of Gold Owl and the strongest human member. His Alchemy specialty is in "Human Transmutation", the ability to create people. It turns out that he did indeed pass away as Elefseria previously thought, and this Duke is really a sentient concept: specifically, Viernes' avatar.

See Viernes' folder from above.

Members

    Sai

Sai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f4jordhbqaa7shs_1.png

A member of Gold Owl encountered by Gray in the Labyrinth of Dogra stealing one of the Dogra Cores as a "treasure". His Alchemy allows him to transmute objects, be they physical or even immaterial concepts.

  • Chain Pain: One of his techniques "Destruction Chain" involves transmuting a large long metal chain tipped with a barbed weight.
  • Dirty Coward: Prefers to fight helpless women or an opponent's weaker rivals, abusing his ability to transmute people's bodies to do so.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite being a sexist, when he later sees Gray - in his underwear - walking around the city with Wendy, he is disturbed to think that Gray would behave in such a way towards a young girl and seemingly have another woman already, mistaking him for a serial philanderer and pervert.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: His "Bond" transmutation techniques involve transforming people into others based on their existing connections. A side-effect is that the other person in the "bond" will take on the form of the target.
    • His "Love Bond" causes a person to transformation into their significant other (such as Gray turning into Juvia).
    • One of his aces-in-the-hole, "Weak Bond", causes the target to transform into the weakest person they can think of.
    • "Material Bond" causes the target to be switched with an object, placing their consciousness within the item and their body in the place of the item. He uses this to capture Gray, Wendy, and Carla by switching them with some jewelry they briefly admired, which leads to the amusing scene of bewildered shoppers staring at their comatose bodies on the jewelry stands.
    • "Rival Bond" forces a person to turn into the individual they despise the most, or at least have the most trouble getting along with. Gray obviously turns into Natsu, and Lucy tries to resist the technique but a small hint of resentment towards one person in particular is enough to trigger a body swap... with Brandish.
  • Logical Weakness: Sai's alchemic bonds change a person into the person or thing that they are thinking of as long as it follows the rules of the technique. His targets can force the technique to fail by thinking of nothing, or manipulate it to their benefit by thinking of a person whose abilities are quite powerful and willingly exchange bodies under the terms of the bond. It also cannot turn a person into someone whose soul has passed on, because there is no longer a life to trade places with.
  • No Ontological Inertia: When he's knocked unconscious by Gajeel-in-Levy's-body, the transmutation immediately wears off.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Has a rather sexist view of women, seeing them as weaker than men and preferring to fight them instead, despite the fact that the Gold Owl has alchemists called the "Singularity Sisters" that he fears and respects for their strength, proving just how utterly clueless he is. This makes it all the more ironic when he is taken off-guard by Gray and Gajeel after he had turned them into Juvia and Levy respectively as they proceed to prove just how capable their significant other is.

    God Serena

"Eight Dragon" God Serena

The former #1 of the 10 Wizard Saints of Ishgal and member of the Spriggan 12 of the Alvarez Empire. Despite being slain by Acnologia during the Empire's invasion of Ishgal, an alchemist from Gold Owl found him and used body part transmutation to fix the lethal damage done to God Serena, and he has resurfaced a year later, alive once more as a member of Gold Owl.

See his entry on the Alvarez Empire page.

    Gennai

Gennai

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gennais_full_appearance.jpg

A member of Gold Owl and one of the two Dolls made by Duke Barbaroa via Human Transmutation.

  • Artificial Human: He is an Alchemist Doll created by his guild master, Duke.
  • Expy: He looks similar with Kozuki Oden from One Piece if he decided to dress up as a Kabuki performer.
  • Mr. Exposition: He explains how Alchemy works exactly and why it is different from Magic to Gray and Wendy and the Exceeds.
  • Smoking Is Cool: His Smoke Alchemy is this as he turns anything that comes contact with his large pipe into smoke.
  • Smug Super: As a Doll with unlimited stamina, he is proud of his alchemist abilities to use without issue compared to wizards.
  • Verbal Tic: "Orororoo!"

    Kotetsu

Kotetsu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/j009_1.jpg

A member of Gold Owl and one of the two Dolls made by Duke Barbaroa via Human Transmutation.

  • Artificial Human: He is an Alchemist Doll created by his guild master, Duke.
  • Hellbent For Leather: He wears a dark leather uniform and a mask that covers his face like that of a ninja.
  • Meaningful Name: Kotetsu can mean "Steel" in Japanese, fitting his power of Iron Alchemy.
  • Midas Touch: In this case, he turns any individual he touches into iron as Rogue found out the hard way when he tried to block his punch with his arm.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: He takes his battles seriously and doesn't play around with his opponents.
  • Smoke Out: He does this to distract his foes and get the drop on them with his Iron Alchemy.

    Athena II

Athena II

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/f4jopbtaiaevawr_2.png

A new version of Athena designed by "Duke" (actually Viernes) to surpass both the original one and the Dragon Gods. She utilizes the abilities of Dragon Slayers whose data she has obtained.

  • All Your Powers Combined: She is potentially able to combine as many forms of Slayer magic as possible. She already has Shadow Dragon and Sky Dragon added to her checklist from Rogue and Wendy. After she beats down Athena I (off-panel) and either she or "Duke" take out Natsu (also off-panel), she gains Fire Dragon powers too.
  • The Archmage: Her creator intends for her to be able to absorb and combine as many forms of Dragon Slayer magic as possible to surpass and curb-stomp the Dragon Gods.
  • Artificial Human: Created to master different forms of Slayer magic and bring Selene and Ignia to their knees before Viernes.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: She never says more than two words per sentence, and she is a merciless mechanical monster capable of plowing through some of the strongest heroes in the series.
  • Blow You Away: She has a more powerful version of Wendy's Sky Dragon Slayer magic which she is able to decimate her enemies with.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: She and Duke deal with Natsu and Athena I off-panel with absolutely no trouble. On her own, she completely smashes right through Lucy, Gray, Jellal, Rogue, and Erza, only using one move on each of them.
  • Dark Is Evil: She has a far darker color scheme and is absolutely vicious.
  • Death of Personality: After Viernes' defeat, Athena I's consciousness takes over Athena II's body, making Athena II essentially dead.
  • The Dragon: The new right-hand of "Barbaroa".
  • Emotionless Girl: Since her creator decided that emotions might get in the way, this Athena is a cold-blooded robotic killing machine.
  • Healing Factor: Obtained from gaining Sky Dragon powers, her healing ability (self-regeneration) is so powerful that she can reform without a scratch immediately after Natsu does enough damage to shatter her body.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Powerful and fast enough to blitz the entire team sent to face Gold Owl and defeat them all with one attack for each of them.
  • Living Shadow: She copies Rogue's abilities and learns how to become one, weaponizing his own powers against him.
  • Magitech: A super-powered Android who can utilize different combinations of Slayer magic.
  • Mechanical Lifeforms: Just like her predecessor, albeit now she even acts the part.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: She wasn't on Natsu's level even with Sky and Shadow Dragon Slayer magic, but after taking Natsu's Fire Dragon Slayer abilities for herself and surpassing him, she batters the original Athena and the entire team sent to stop Gold Owl to within an inch of their lives.
  • One-Woman Army: Five of the most powerful mages in the world combined get utterly decimated by her in a matter of seconds, and she wasn't even trying.
  • Playing with Fire: She introduces herself to the group facing Duke with a fire-powered kick.
  • The Quiet One: So far, she mostly sticks to saying two words like "Yes, sir" and "Master Duke."
  • Superior Successor: What Viernes intends for her to be when compared to the original Athena. Time will tell whether or not she has succeeded, given that she absolutely thrashed her half to death off-panel, though Athena was already dealing with a hole in her chest at the time.
  • Strong and Skilled: She's second only to Viernes in power and she has already achieved mastery over at least three different Dragon Slayer elements.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Shadow and Sky Dragon powers not enough for her? Just add Fire Dragon magic, and she can solo the entire team of heroes sent to stop her master.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her very existence is a major game changer for just about every faction in the story.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She's only "weak" compared to her older sibling Athena I and Natsu, but she already has mastery over two different forms of Slayer magic that she can combine to deadly effect. When Natsu has to go on the defensive to avoid "Duke" killing Wendy, Athena II launches a merciless assault and nearly kills him right then and there if not for Athena I stepping in, and even then she holds her own against her older and stronger counterpart, eventually surpassing her thanks to obtaining Natsu's Fire Dragon Slayer powers, becoming Strong and Skilled by comparison.
  • World's Strongest Woman: What "Duke" (Viernes) wants her to become so that she can easily force his rivals (Selene and Ignia) to bow before them both. Of course, given Natsu is able to rather handily get the upper hand on her in a straight fight using Lightning Dragon mode despite her possessing Wendy's and Rogue's magics prove she's nowhere close to that level yet. "Duke" readily admits that she's currently no match for Natsu's full power. Then he helps her obtain Natsu's own powers, granting her Fire Dragon mode, which allows her to reduce both Natsu and Athena I to a near-death state, meaning only Selene surpasses her now (as the world's most powerful woman who rivals Viernes and Ignia, the two most powerful men).

    Rousseau Signario

Rosseau Signario

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20230125_182114.jpg

One of the two Singularity Sisters from Gold Owl who far surpass even God Serena in terms of power and skill. She has the warmer, upbeat temperament.

  • Always Someone Better: She and her sister are this to God Serena who states that he cannot hold a candle to them and their Guild Master despite his strength as formerly Ishgal's strongest acknowledged mage.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She’s the friendlier one between the two sisters, but her power proves why everyone is afraid of both of them equally.
  • Cute and Psycho: An incredibly beautiful woman who has has a notably fondness for things that she considers cute....yet considers every part of her Dream Death World to be adorable and during her fight against Erza, Jellal and Minerva she spends half of it gushing about the beauty of her magic and half of it grinning like a bloodthirsty lunatic.
  • The Dreaded: Sai is left almost pissing himself in fear at the thought of what they'll do to him if he fails to bring the Dogra Core back to the guild, and so he goes on a furious attack on Gray in Juvia's body.
  • Girly Bruiser: She's as powerful a mage as her devotion and enjoyment to "cute things" is apparent, being able to comfortably fight against Erza, Jellal and Minerva at the same time while never losing her playful attitude.
  • Glass Cannon: She's very quickly wounded by Erza's myriad Heaven's Wheel blades slashing at her all at once, and when she falls down, instead of forcing herself to stand up, she weakly calls out for her big sister to help her, causing Enny (who, as it turns out, has armor requipping abilities like Erza) to step in and take over the fight for her. She does, at least, remain conscious enough to watch the outcome.
  • A God Am I: When she uses her 'world transmutation' alchemy, she declares herself a "cutie god".
  • Logical Weakness: Her world transmutation alchemy is on another level, but it relies on affecting the space she's designated as "her world". In order to animalize Erza, Minerva, and Jellal, she had to directly capture them in chains formed from her power and blast them with energy, and once they managed to escape thanks to Enny they immediately went back to normal. As Erza realizes in their rematch, an attack powerful enough to destroy its surroundings, i.e. "the world", will temporarily render her powerless until she exerts her will on the surroundings again.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Like her sister, she’s a slim, busty woman, and though her dress is less revealing than her sister’s, it still emphasizes her chest.
  • Nice Girl: In contrast to her sister’s annoyed demeanor, she’s introduced as more friendly; even accepting God Serena’s antics with good cheer.
  • Oh, Crap!: She's understandably shocked and worried to see her big sister Enny actually losing to Erza, not to mention Rousseau herself is too injured to jump back in and assist her or maintain the world they created using alchemy.
    Rousseau: BIG SIS!
  • Reality Warper: Why is near everyone wary of her and her sister? Because as alchemy is described as changing existing substances, she and her sister take this to its logical conclusion by transmuting "the world” and making it follow their commands.
  • Sibling Team: They are two sisters who happened to be the strongest alchemists of Gold Owl second to the Guild Master.
  • Squishy Wizard: Her alchemy is straight into the realm of Reality Warper, but as Erza finds out in their second fight, get past that and Rousseau isn't nearly capable of taking a hit she isn't fast enough to counter with her power.
  • Underestimating Badassery: It's pretty clear that Rousseau doesn't take Erza seriously in their second fight when she fights Titania alone compared to Round 1 where Minerva and Jellal were also on hand, to the point she starts playfully singing about how she's unstoppable after casually transforming Erza's Adamantine Armor into a bikini and dogpiling her with summons. When Erza starts destroying her surroundings directly to interfere with her World Alchemy, Rousseau is so shocked and starts panicking that she doesn't even try to use her chain-and-animal transmutation that rendered Erza helpless before and instead tries to just overwhelm Erza with sheer numbers.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Her Reality Warper alchemy is such that even God Serena is frightened of her power, but it's clear from how she fights Rousseau doesn't really have a warrior's instincts and treats it more like a game with rules of her own making, preferring to overwhelm the opposition with her creations and use whatever niche application of her power strikes her fancy at the moment. When Erza gets a definite upper hand on her, Rousseau just panics and resorts to throwing more and bigger creations at her rather than step back and think logically as Enny yells at her to do, and this brute force approach doesn't deter Erza from charging through and taking her down.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: At the end of the Gold Dragon Arc, she and her sister regain their proper memories as servants to Ignia, not Viernes who manipulated their memories, and make their exit in an explosion of flame to return to their master while promising We Will Meet Again.
  • World Gone Mad: Her Dream Death World recreates the world into a nightmarish amusement park.

    Enny Signario

Enny Signario

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/20230125_181041.jpg

One of the two Singularity Sisters from Gold Owl who far surpass even God Serena in terms of power and skill. She has the colder, downbeat temperament.

  • Aloof Big Sister: While Enny goes wherever Rousseau does, she tends to hang back and just watch her sister do their business, and she isn't above "spoiling" Rousseau's fun if she feels like it's been dragging on and making her displeasure known. When Erza manages to cut down Rousseau, however, Enny immediately shifts gears with murderous intent.
  • Always Someone Better: She and her sister are this are this to God Serena who states that he cannot hold a candle to them and their Guild Master despite his strength as formerly Ishgal's strongest acknowledged mage.
  • Black Knight: Her "Armor of Destruction" Requip clads her in a set of black demonic armor, complete with more prominent armored horns from the sides of her head and a jagged black sword with eyeballs near the hilt.
  • Death World: Her Purgatory recreates the world into a hellish land with dead and rocky terrain complete with burning fire rivers and skeletal trees and bones dotted everywhere and black clouds in the sky.
  • The Dreaded: Sai is left almost pissing himself in fear at the thought of what they'll do to him if he fails to bring the Dogra Core back to the guild, and so he goes on a furious attack on Gray in Juvia's body. Even the normally fearless and eccentric God Serena freaks out when she wants to kill him for annoying her and bungling an important task.
  • Half-Hearted Henchman: Even if it complicates carrying out orders, Enny expresses zero compliance if she becomes bored. She grows weary of her sister's antics in Dream Death World, so she creates an exit for her opponents just to be done with it all, and shoots a Death Glare at Rousseau for being blissfully unaware of the unbearable boredom she's caused Enny to feel. About the only thing shown to get her interested is her sister being in danger.
  • Magic Knight: Unlike Rousseau, who relies solely on her alchemy, Enny is more specialized in close combat and proves it by clashing with Erza head-to-head with the blade while only using her World Alchemy to launch cheap shots from the surroundings to keep her off-balanced, even managing to overwhelm Erza in their duel.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Like her sister, she’s a slim, busty woman, whose dress emphasizes her chest and slender leg, and is implied to be wearing nothing else.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: When Enny steps up to fight Erza, she doesn't waste time gloating or doing anything fancy with her power. Instead, she's immediately on Erza swinging her sword and manipulating her surroundings with World Alchemy to fire shots to keep her off-balance.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Unlike her expressive sister who's almost always smiling, Enny seems to have a frown as her default expression, which barely changes save to get more intense when she's particularly annoyed.
  • Reality Warper: Why is near everyone wary of her and her sister? Because as alchemy is described as changing existing substances, she and her sister take this to it’s logical conclusion by transmuting "the world” and making it follow their commands.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: Her revealing outfit is this by default.
  • Sibling Team: They are two sisters who happened to be the strongest alchemists of Gold Owl second to the Guild Master.
  • Summon to Hand: She has the ability to use the same Requip magic Erza possesses, which surprises Erza since this would suggest Enny is a wizard alongside being an alchemist, a status that would technically only be shared by Duke and Athena in Gold Owl. Enny clarifies however that this is simply another application of her alchemy.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In contrast to her sister, she is not a fan of God Serena. She wonders why a wizard is a member of an alchemist guild, finds his antics annoying, and asks if she can kill him for his failure to retrieve the Dogra Core.
  • Vapor Wear: In contrast to her more conservatively dressed sister, Enny’s dress is backless with a slit that goes high enough to her waist to indicate she’s not wearing anything other than the dress. She does switch to a more conservative armor set for her fight with Erza, however.
  • Villain: Exit, Stage Left: At the end of the Gold Dragon Arc, she and her sister regain their proper memories as servants to Ignia, not Viernes who manipulated their memories, and make their exit in an explosion of flame to return to their master while promising We Will Meet Again.
