Beacon Thrones Characters

    Maewren

Maewren

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_maewren.jpg
Beautiful and serene, with a heart (and the skills) to fight for and protect those she loves.
A beautiful, high-born centauride, who is noted most significantly for her selfless nature, exceptional skill with the bow, and loyalty to Belzor Ven'Ho.Having dedicated her life to the discipline of spiritual discipleship under the Misht'thurelin, Maewren is as devoted to the young prophet and his ideals as his Soul Guards. She readily devotes herself to worthy causes, and despite her gentle, quiet temperament, is a fierce advocate in the pursuit of fighting injustices and helping those she cares for.
  • Action Girl: Maewren is a skilled archer and not afraid to engage in combat in order to protect loved ones.
  • All-Loving Heroine: Although only a support character, Maewren still plays an integral role in the story, and she exhibits all the positive traits associated with this trope.
  • Beautiful Singing Voice: Maewren's singing voice is described as a rich contralto tone.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Maewren is considered by many to be naturally beautiful (no magic enhancements needed). She is also devout, selfless and kind.
  • Big "NO!": Chase screams this after the dust clears and he finds Maewren severely injured from the ghoshmyl attack.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: It's pretty clear early into her introduction into the story, that Maewren has feelings for Belzor (and he for her), although she's never worked up the courage to confess—likely due to their professional relationship as Teacher and disciple, as well as the precedence of Belzor's duties as the Misht'thurelin. Near the end of the series, they eventually express their feelings for one another and get a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Character Tics: Maewren fiddles with her neck pendant whenever she gets anxious/ emotionally stirred.
  • Childhood Friends: Maewren has been friends with Belzor, Chase and Ferule since she was a child.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Maewren and Belzor grew up together and ran in similar social circles (he being the Misht'thurelin and her, daughter of nobility). Maewren also chose to pursue a calling as a spiritual disciple under Belzor. But while they would have undoubtedly had a teacher/ student dynamic, their continuously close friendship over the years eventually develops into something more.
  • Eye Scream: Maewren deals this blow to Thrawn, twice—courtesy of her badass archery skills.

  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: Of the weapon-wielders in Belzor's group, Maerwen is the long-distance support (with her bow and arrows) while Chase and Ferule are both close-range fighters (wielding axes and a battle hammer).
  • The Heart: She fulfils this role within Belzor's group.
  • Held Gaze: A beautiful moment between her and Belzor, when they finally express their feelings for one another.

  • Implied Love Interest: Between Maewren and Belzor. For most of the series, the pair dances around the Will They or Won't They? tree, for different reasons, until, with the threat of the Second Gathering imminent, they finally express their feelings and get a Relationship Upgrade.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Maewren takes down running (hobgoblin) targets through a forest while also running. She also manages to strike Thrawn right through the slit of its helm and puts an arrow in the eye of its beast head.
  • Just Friends: Maerwen and Chase; although Chase is in love with her, he knows the feeling is unrequited and so follows the path of I Want My Beloved to Be Happy.
  • No Hugging, No Kissing: The romance between Belzor and Maewren and is a sub-plot that's only lightly touched upon.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Maewren is considered very beautiful in centaur society due to this. Her brother, Tain, shares this genetic combination.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Near the end of the series, Belzor and Maewren finally express their feelings for one another.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Maewren is of noble birth, eloquent, quiet and refined in her beauty. But she is also a forbiddable fighter and relentless in her dutifulness, no matter the danger or emotional/ physical demands required of her.
  • UST: She has this with Belzor.

     Ferule and Chase

Ferule and Chase

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_ferule.jpg
The older brother, proud and rowdy and not afraid to bash some heads.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_chase.jpg
The younger brother, high-spirited and impulsive, affectionate and loyal.
Identical twins with a penchant for jest and boisterous self-expression. Ferule and Chase Sheddly are both centaur vanguards in the Centaurian army, strong and skilled, with just enough irreverence to social properties as to be considered playfully puckish but not troublesome. Despite their disruptive tendencies, the brothers are faithful where it counts—to their friends and to the safe-guarding of their home.
  • Always Identical Twins: Ferule and Chase Sheddly have the same build, the same fur and hair colouring and very similar voice tones. The only noticeable difference between them is Chase's heterochromia (his eyes being two different colours).

  • Big Damn Heroes: Along with Bezlor, Ferule and Chase charge at Thrawn using a shield-and-slam technique in order to rescue Laeka'Draeon and Shifra from the monster's grasp.
  • Big "NO!": Chase screams this after he finds Maewren badly injured by a ghoshmyl strike.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Both brothers are physically strong, and—being centaurs—quite large to boot. They are also fun-loving, high-spirited individuals who enjoy good banter and dramatic jesting.
  • Childhood Friends: Ferule and Chase have both been friends with Belzor and Maewren since they were all youngsters.
  • Comic Relief: Ferule and Chase Sheddly are kings of tension-dispelling by means of their blithe jesting and cheerfulness. Their interactions with Norf are especially amusing.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Ferule and Chase (aside from Chase's left eye) have light-brown eyes that closely matches their sandy-coloured hair.
  • Dual Wielding: Chase wields a matching pair of battle axes.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: They have a habit of doing this as they are well-versed with each other’s bantering.
  • Hilarity Ensues: Whenever they interact with Norf.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Maewren places herself in immediate danger in an attempt to shorten the battle against Thrawn, Chase rushes to shield her and takes the brunt of the High General's terrible blow, being gravely wounded as a result.
  • Hot-Blooded: Both Ferule and Chase are full of vim and vigour and are especially gusty and determined when it comes to combat. Ferule is probably a bit more intense than his brother and tends to lose his temper more easily.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Chase values his friendships with Maewren and Belzor too much to try and pursue his affection for Maewren—being aware of how the other two feel about each other.
  • Just Friends: Chase and Maewren; although Chase is in love with her, he knows the feeling is unrequited due to her being in love with Belzor. He values both their friendships and chooses not to get in the way.
  • Last-Name Basis: In the series, they are often referred to as the "Sheddlys" or "Sheddly twins". Even some characters call them by their last name instead of their first names.
  • The Nicknamer: They tend to use nicknames for those close to them, calling Maewren "Mae" and Belzor "Bez" and "Albi". Chase also affectionately refers to Maewren as "love".
  • Sibling Team: Brothers who work together and play together. Always seen in each other's company.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Ferule uses coarser words than his brother; he also gets more visibly fired-up.
  • Speak in Unison: A few times, although it's only ever a few words (not entire sentences).
  • Twin Banter: Often; it's what they do best.
  • Undying Loyalty: To each other for sure, but also to Belzor—as seen in their efforts to be assigned under him (as opposed to their vanguard posts), and then chasing after him, after he leaves with the Imurainiir on his quest to aid Laeka'Draeon.
  • You Can Talk?: Chase exclaims, “It speaks! after hearing Thrawn verbally respond after Belzor’s group rushed to attack it, knowing it to be the instigator of the raid on Shinyon.

    Rardius

Rardius

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_rardius.jpg
A fearsome countenance and reuptation does not negate a sincerely calm, caring and down-to-earth disposition.
A calm and collected centaur with a surprisingly down-to-earth disposition, considering he is the General of the entire Centaurian armed forces of Gelian. And considering the reputation of the Centaurian army, there's little doubt Rardius is a formidable fighter and strategist.
  • A Father to His Men: Considering his notable character traits, and the fact he fights on the frontlines alongside his soldiers, it's highly likely he cares deeply for his subordinates and would be the kind of leader to regularly express his admiration and praise for their efforts and achievements.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: He is the general of the Centaurian army, and readily gets in on the action—fighting on the frontlines alongside his soldiers (as seen during the hobgoblin and ghoshmyl attack on the Raegelian Forest).

  • Hidden Depths: Despite his fearsome and somewhat angry-looking countenance and presence, Rardius is shown to be a deep-thinking and wise individual; his conversation with Laeka'Draeon as he escorts the young dragon to the Waiting Tree reveals he is a thoughtful listener and observer of others, even those who are not a part of the military circles.

  • Large and in Charge: Being a centaur, he is already one of the largest sentient creatures in Valadae. Rardius is furthermore described as being tall and robustly-built with a fearsome and stern calibre.

  • Protectorate: Rardius is prompted to assemble units of soldiers in order to rush ahead of the hobgoblin and ghoshmyl invasion in order to defend the inhabitants of Raegelian, as well as protect the borders of Caprine.

  • Rugged Scar: Rardius' official profile picture shows significant scars on the right side of his body, starting from his chin, down his neck and across his upper pectoral muscle.

  • The Stoic: He retains a calm and stern demeanour. Even when the target of Ferule and Chase's not-really-respectful-enough-for-the-situation interactions, the most they can goad from him is an eyebrow twitch.

     Pyralis

Pyralis

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_pyralis.jpg
Fierce and forward, she not afraid to do the less pleasant tasks required of a woodland guardian.

An abrupt and robust fire nymph, with a blunt disposition and hot-edged tongue to match. Pyralis is quick to take action in subduing Laeka'Draeon and his friends (without their consent) in order to put them through a cleansing process to ensure they carried no taint into the Olmu Glade. Civility lost to her hot-blooded temperament, her strength lies in her staunch protectiveness of the beautiful and ancient Raegelian realm, and her uncompromising love and respect for her monarch, Lady Megandel.

  • Always Female: Pyralis, and all the other nymphs of Raegelian, assumes the physical appearance of a comely female.
  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Apitmising their interconnected elements, nymphs have a colourful variety of skin and hair tones. Pyralis' skin is mauve, and her hair is actual flames.
  • Ball of Light Transformation: She is able to dual-shift between a physical, female-looking form, and an orb of fiery light.
  • Elemental Powers: Pyralis is able to manipulate and conjure fire.
  • Elemental Shapeshifter: Although in the series the reader never witnesses Pyralis (or any of the other nymphs) in full elemental action, she is capable of transforming herself into great wreaths of flame.
  • Enchanted Forest: Pyralis resides in The Realm of the Nymphs, a forest named after the inhabitants who protect and nurture it.
  • Fiery Redhead: Has literal red flames for her hair and strongly personifies her element.
  • Flaming Hair: Her hair is composed of actual flames.
  • Garden Garment: Her clothes are wispy and ashen, like smoke and ash from a wood fire.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Pyralis is not a particularly civil individual, and is curt and abrupt in her interactions with Laeka’Draeon. However, she is a staunch defender of her home against corruptive forces, and deeply respectful of those in authority (especially Lady Megandel).
  • Meaningful Name: Pyralis means "Of Fire".
  • Nature Spirit: Is a being closely connected to the elements of nature, and is a warden of the Raegelian Forest.
  • No Biological Sex: Although feminine in appearance, Pyralis — as a Valadilian nymph — is biologically genderless.
  • One-Gender Race: Is a nymph; although technically genderless, assumes a distinctly feminine form.
  • Only One Name: Known only as Pyralis.
  • Our Nymphs Are Different: Pyralis is a nymph of the element of fire, capable of dual-shifting between a physical feminine form, and a fiery orb.
  • Power Floats: Nymphs are unsurpassed in the ability to wield and manipulate elemental energies. They are also capable of levitation in their physical forms, as seen when Pyralis shifts from fire-orb to physical form in front of Laeka’Draeon—remaining airborne the entire time.
  • Seeing Through Another's Eyes: Using Norf as a lure, she watches (through Norf's eyes) as Laeka'Draeon and Ubi fall into her toadstool-ring trap.

     Ourntar

Ourntar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_ourntar.jpg
Stoic, loyal, guarded—the embodiment of a silent protector.

A rare and powerful creature known as a soujor, Ournar is Soul Guard to the faerie queen, Lady Megandel, and thus fiercely loyal and protective of her; at her word, he will guard and guide or rend and destroy without hesitation. A legacy guardian, he has served the royal faeren bloodlines for generations, his long and observant life accumulating invaluable knowledge, wisdom and history.

  • The Ageless: Ourntar is a fully matured immortal and will never age from his present appearance.
  • Battle Butler: Is Lady Megandel’s Soul Guard and a fearsome creature, heavily implied to be able to easily hold his own in any conflict or dangerous situation. A testament to his influence is him guiding Laeka’Draeon and companions through the Nymph Realm to the edge of Mistwood after the Wall-watchers had already turned agitated and murderous. Even they (the wall-watchers) steered clear of the soujor, even though their wild instincts had fully kicked in.
  • Complete Immortality: Ourntar—being a soujor—is immune to illness and degeneration by time, and cannot be killed by any measure of wounding. The Wikia compendium gives more insight into the soujor creature-kind.
  • Endangered Species: Ourntar is one of only eleven known living soujors.
  • Hybrid Monster: Does not look it, but is a result of an eudemon and faerie union.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Has piercing blue eyes that have the ability to gaze into the souls of other creatures and interpret their heart intentions.
  • Invisibility: Ourntar is able to phase in and out of physically visible states—an ability inherited from his Eudemon side.
  • Legacy of Service: Ourntar has been the Soul Guard for the faeren royalty for generations.
  • The Mentor: Acts as advisor and confidant to Lady Megandel and, to a degree, Lord Belzor.
  • Panthera Awesome: Ourntar is a soujor, and the majority of soujors take the form of large felines, with fantastical features (such as horns or spines, or extra ears and tails). Ourntar has tiger stripes, forehead horns, and three long, thick tails.
  • Protectorate: As Lady Megandel’s Soul Guard, he is responsible for guarding and protecting her with all his might and ability—which is considerable, with him being a powerful, immortal soujor. And after seeing his reaction to the Aunuen, it’s made clear he is very protective of her.
  • The Reliable One: Is subservient and loyal to his monarch, and also incredibly powerful and perceptive.
  • The Stoic: Is a very calm and serious individual; as a soujor, he does not experience emotions to any impassioned degree like most other sentient Valadilian creatures.
  • Teleportation: Another ability Ourntar has thanks to his Eudemon heritage.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Lady Megandel.
  • The Watcher: Being observant and absorbent is in a soujor’s nature. Ourntar follows this trope to a degree, aiding the companions in small ways, but being more of a bystander and informant.

     Lady Megandel

Lady Megandel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_megandel.jpg
A powerful seer and benevolent ruler of her kind. She strives for peace and restoration for all the fallen and broken parts of Valadae.

The wise, compassionate, and beautiful queen of the faeries and ruler of the Realm of the Nymphs. Megandel's rare seer abilities enable her to foresee events tied to individuals (when she makes direct contact with them), as well as interpret dreams and prophetic visions. It is this particular talent that Belzor relays to Laeka'Draeon when they are faced with the predicament of having prophetic visions trapped, and fractured, inside Laeka'Draeon's mind; and subsequently, the reason why the centaur prophet advises the young dragon seek her out and ask for her aid.

  • Angelic Beauty: Her appearance is described as being “unmatched in radiance and serenity”, among other eloquent prose. She is considered the most beautiful character in the series.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: Lady Megdanel definitely qualifies. She is purely benevolent and beautiful.
  • Cosmopolitan Council: She takes part in the Crown Meet, alongside numerous other rulers and heads, including Belzor Ven'Ho.
  • The Empath: Is able to read the innermost thoughts and emotions of others—both by looking into their eyes and physically touching them.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Is beautiful (with wavy, golden hair) and benevolent, abounding in kindness and wisdom. She also is averse to violence—seeking all other means of resolution first (but will consent to forceful action by her subjects in order to defend and protect her kin and realm).
  • Held Gaze: Megandel does this as part of her seer ability to look into others’ souls.
  • The High Queen: She is this in nearly every aspect of the trope.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: The most purely good character in the series. She is famous for her incorruptible power and insight.
  • Inhumanly Beautiful Race: Megandel is of the honmirogein faerie kind; considered the most beautiful of the four faerie types.
  • The Omniscient: It is clear that Lady Megandel has some level of supernatural insight; through touch, she can look into an individual and see everything about them, including their potential for both good and evil. Her ‘Sight’ also extends throughout her domain, though not beyond.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: Megandel is a honmirogein faerie: a beautiful creature with effervescent insect-like wings, long, elegant cloven-hoofed legs, small antlers, lustrous golden hair, and soft, shapely features.
  • Proper Lady: Megandel is gentle but very powerful and knowledgeable. She places the good of her people and realm above herself and even extends her peace-seeking practises to the surrounding realms. And interesting to note that she goes by the title of Lady, and not Queen.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Lady Megandel is obliging and welcoming of Laeka'Draeon and Shifra, and readily listens to their requests and subsequently offers her giftings and insight to help them.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Megandel uses her powerful seer gifts to reconstruct the prophecy trapped within Laeka'Draeon's mind. She also offers Shifra personal guidance, and then lends the companions her Soul Guard so that they are able to leave the Realm of the Nymphs safely. Later in the series, she goes to Coron-Mias to receive updates from Laeka'Draeon, as well as inform him of the enemy's recent moves against Valadae. She then partakes of the Crown Meet and offers her services to the allied armies in the form of her Soul Guard, Ounrtar.
  • Shout-Out: Megandel was named after one of the author’s high school friends, Megan.
  • Super-Senses: Megandel's clairvoyant giftings would certainly qualify.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Her eyes are described as being silvery in colour with an effervescent quality. Laeka’Draeon likens them to starlight.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After Laeka’Draeon expresses his feelings of being weak and unfit for the task required of him, Megandel renews his courage by reminding him of his incredible potential.
  • You Remind Me of X: In Book Two, when Laeka’Draeon meets the Lady Megandel for the first time, she mentions, “When I look at you, I see someone else I once knew.” She does not continue down that line of conversation, and, although extremely curious, Laeka’Draeon does not pursue the topic. Later in the series (Book 5), after it is discovered that a fair amount of Aurnraulath’s essence absorbed into Laeka’Draeon, altering the rate of his growth (and, likely, his appearance), one can assume that when Megandel looked at the young dragon, she was reminded of his father. Although it is not stated in the books that Aurnraulath or Megandel ever met, one can assume they did in the past, due to their status (he a dragon prince and active delegate, and she the ruler of an allied realm).

     Selisidus

Selisidus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/framed_selisidus.jpg
The powerful and serene guardian of the Beacon Throne of Water and Air

An ancient and gentle serpentine drake infused with the elemental energies of water. Selisidus was assigned as guardian over the Beacon Throne of Water and Air—through which she regulates the stability of its continuous energy-flow. With her body bound under enchanted dormancy (a requirement to properly stabilise the Beacon Throne), she is helpless to stop dark forces from stealing the Throne’s Channelling Stone.By an ancient edict and magical binding, she can only be awakened by a dragon—a task revealed to Laeka’Draeon by Lady Megandel, and thus allocated to him.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: She consciously bears witness to the entire goings-on in the kingdoms connected to her Beacon Throne, but while her body is in its enchanted, hibernation state, she is unable to directly interact with anything or anyone. The "all-powerful" aspect of the trope is downplayed, in that, while she is the most powerful elemental wielder (of Water and Air) in the entire series, she is not infallible.
  • Antiquated Linguistics: Selisidus speaks with a loosely 'Gregorian-styled' speech—implemented to mark her ancientness and belonging to a by-gone age.
  • Bequeathed Power: Selisidus bequeaths Laeka'Draeon with her ability to see the energies of the elements of air and water. She also implants a part of her spirit into him—which restores his power of Flight.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Is a benign creature of immense power, but capable of death and destruction if provoked (she took out Az-Thorz with a Death Seal in a matter of seconds).
  • Disappears into Light: When Selisidus performs the Last Sacrifice her body disintegrates into particles of light, which are then absorbed into both her Throne and Laeka’Draeon.
  • Dying Race: Her kind are thought by many to be long-ago extinct, but Selisidus is one of four remaining (living) serpentine drakes. Alas, she is fated to die in order to restore the flow of her Beacon Throne.
  • Elemental Powers: She is a wielder of both water and air manna.
  • Giant Flyer: Part of the description of her appearance: “The serpentine creature filled the sky, weightless as the wind and splendid as a sunset sky.” In short, she’s big. According to Word of God, she is the second largest of the drakes.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Selisidus does not hesitate to use the Last Sacrifice to transfer all her physical manna into her Beacon Throne, in order to revive its channelling power.
  • Last Of Her Kind: Is the last of the water serpentine drakes.
  • Living Relic: She is one of four serpentine drakes that chose an existence of loneliness and self-isolation by becoming the living stabilisers of their respective Thrones, while the rest of their entire race sacrificed their lives to activate the Thrones’ powers in order to subvert the destruction of the first Manna Eruption.

  • Our Dragons Are Different: Not an actual dragon, but her kind are certainly inspired by the eastern variation of Earth dragons, being elongated, wingless (flight by magic), with hair-like manes and deer-like antlers.
  • Power Floats: She is a master elemental user, guardian of the Beacon Throne of water and Air, and she hovers in the air, her coils in a constant, slow motion, like a snake in water.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Has been alive since the Elder Age, making her at least 2500 years old.
