Aguefort Adventuring Academy

Aguefort Faculty

    Emergency Backup Principal Grix

Emergency Backup Principal Arcturus Grix

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arcturus_grix_2.jpg
"I have been created by your principal, Arthur Aguefort, to enact perfect adventuring order."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Warforged
Class: Wizard

A backup principal built by Arthur designed to enforce "perfect adventuring order". The school digs him out of storage when Arthur and Gilear both go on vacation at the same time, leaving the school without a principal.

  • Establishing Character Moment: He asks the same question Arthur did at the first day assembly. His answer is... different.
Grix: But what is an adventurer? One who goes on adventures? Yes.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even Grix is very thrown off guard and disturbed by the fucking machines belonging to Gorgug's parents that he brings to life when attacking the Frostyfaire Folk Festival.
  • Obviously Evil: Doesn't attempt to hide how violently authoritarian he is.
  • Order Is Not Good: Very authoritarian, focused on "perfect order". He isn't directly hostile, but isn't particularly good either. Until he determines that the best way to create order is to be omnipresent in all the students' lives and attempts to kill those who attend a festival. However, as Grix targeted Ruben Hopclap specifically, it may be that he was trying to stop a direct threat to the school due to the ritual Ruben's performance was secretly powering.
  • Sadist Principal: Is very strict and downright violent (up to and including lethal force) when it comes to making his students respect the bylaws of Aguefort Adventuring Academy.
  • Time Master: Created by Arthur Aguefort, a man who believes Chronomancy is the strongest magic of all, Grix is capable of using Time Stop to enforce order.

    Jace Stardiamond

Jace Stardiamond

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jace_stardiamond.png
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Sorcerer

The Sorcery teacher at Aguefort Academy.

  • Ascended Extra: Technically debuted in Freshman Year, but it wasn't until Junior Year that he got more than a handful of lines. Though even here he doesn't have much focus since none of the Bad Kids take sorcerer classes.
  • Came Back Wrong: Came back from death as a follower of Ankarna.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: As of Junior Year, he is made Interim Vice-Principal due to Gilear going on vacation and is seen trying to stop Interim Principal Grix from capturing students with nets after making them undergo mandatory drug testing.
  • Cool Teacher: He is not really a proper teacher because sorcery is an innate ability in people to cast magic, so a he's really just an older adult friend to hang out and talk-shop with for the most part.

    Porter Cliffbreaker

Porter Cliffbreaker

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/porter_cliffbreaker.png
Race: Earth Genasi
Class: Barbarian/Paladin

The Barbarian teacher at Aguefort Academy.

  • Ascended Extra: Technically debuted in Freshman Year with a handful of lines (and a few sporadic spying attempts by Fig apropos of nothing), but Junior Year brings him into greater focus as the Bad Kids' actual school year gains greater focus.
  • Hidden Depths: Come Junior Year, Fig starts looking into multiclassing into Paladin. It turns out that Porter is one of the Paladin advisors, and has had a few levels in the class the whole time.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Fig is absolutely convinced Porter is evil and is determined to prove it by attending his classes. On Porter's part, he considers Fig one of his best students despite the fact she isn't even enrolled in his class. She even hires Riz between freshmen and sophomore year to spy on him.

    Terpsichore Skullcleaver

Terpsichore Skullcleaver

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/terpsichore_skullcleaver.jpg
"Dance isn't in the future. It's always right now."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Half-Orc
Class: Bard

Chair of the Bard department at Aguefort. Teaches dance classes.

  • Cool Old Lady: Extremely spry and cheerful for her age, and a great teacher on top of that.
  • Hippie Teacher: Her vision of dance and life in general is quite esoteric, to say the least.
  • Meaningful Name: Fitting for a dance teacher, she shares a name with the Greek Muse of dance.

    Tiberia Runestaff

Tiberia Runestaff

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tiberia_runestaff.jpg
"I don't want you first timing it on a ritual to seal an evil divinity within some kind of gemstone."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Human(?)
Class: Wizard

An old friend of Arthur's from the Mountains of Chaos. Teaches every wizard class at the school.

    Lucilla Lullaby

Lucilla Lullaby

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucilla_lullaby.png
"Welcome, students, once again, to another... Oh, oh my god! Oh shit, hi!"
Race: Eladrin
Class: Bard

Another Bard teacher. Fig has been avoiding her classes for two years.

  • Minor Insult Meltdown: Exaggerated. She takes Fig asking her if she could do an independent study for bard class very personally, to the point of going on a months-long breakdown.

    Henry Hopclap

Henry Hopclap

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/henry_hopclap.png
"Hey, you can trust old Henry Hopclap. I'm here to help."
Race: Gnome
Class: Artificer

The new Artificer teacher at Aguefort.

  • Enthusiastic Newbie Teacher: Downplayed. He wants his students to succeed and is willing to skirt the rules to accommodate Gorgug after his MCAT is rejected, but is fully aware of the work and patience required for it to work.
  • One-Steve Limit: Last name version, but he shares the same last name as Ruben of the Rat-Grinders. He eventually admits Ruben is his nephew.

    Zara Sool

Zara Sool

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zara_sool.jpg
"Welcome to independent study."
Race: Vampire
Class: Warlock (The Celestial)

The Warlock teacher at Aguefort. Teaches at night.

  • Cool Teacher: Fig is immediately smitten by how cool the charismatic vampire teacher is.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: A powerful undead who's not afraid to use her powers on her own students. Also one of the most well meaning teachers at Aguefort. Her class is built around helping her students avoid legal pitfalls and understand the social and emotional aspects of forging pacts. She's also willing to speak candidly with her students about their insecurities, as we see with Fig.
  • Read the Fine Print: Her lessons focus on picking apart the dense legalese of Warlock pacts to get the best deal.

    Yolanda Badgood

Yolanda Badgood

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yolanda_badgood.jpg
"Things can be bad and things can be good, but they can all be true."
Race: Air Genasi
Class: Cleric

The Cleric teacher at Aguefort.

  • And I Must Scream: A divine seal from the unnamed rage deity behind the death of Cassandra stops her from passing on. Fortunately, Kristen is able to let her move on to the afterlife.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Investigating into Lucy Frostblade's death gets her killed and her soul sealed inside of her own corpse.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Even though Kristen has been dealing with multiple shifts in ideology and can't currently cast spells, Yolanda allows Kristen to make up for it by performing miracles and writing additional essays.
    Bobby Dawn

Bobby Dawn

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Human
Class: Cleric of Sol

The new cleric teacher hired after Yolanda's death. A sly televangelist from Highchurch and Buddy's grandfather.

  • Laser-Guided Karma: His attempt to fail Kristen out of the school leads to the Bad Kids taking the Last Stand. This not only leads to Kristen acing junior year, but gets his grandson killed and dragged under the influence of another god.
  • Light Is Not Good: A cleric of the sun god dressed in white and one of the most bitter staff members our heroes have had the displeasure of meeting.
    Gavin Pundle

Gavin Pundle

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Human

The proctor for the Bad Kids' Last Stand.

  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Spends the entire test taking notes and announcing the upcoming waves. He drops this once Buddy dies and the treat of death becomes real.
  • The Load: Invoked. 30% of the test is keeping him alive and he can't do anything to influence that one way or the other.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: In rare form for adults in the series, he listens to the Bad Kids' concerns about his safety following Buddy's death. He immediately reports everything to the Council of Chosen and goes into witness protection shortly after.

Aguefort Students

    Mazey Phaedra

Mazey Phaedra

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mazey_phaedra.png

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Minotaur
Class: Bard

The current Student Council President at Aguefort.

  • Betty and Veronica: The sweet and likable Betty to Ivy's Veronica for Fabian's Archie.
  • Dance Battler: Her bard class is focused on dance.
  • Good Is Boring: Subverted. As a well-adjusted Nice Girl with little to no eccentricities, it seems she's set up as the less interesting foil to Ivy, but in actuality, she's actually got quite an interesting life, coming from a family of minotaurs deep into a labyrinth under the Red Waste, but somehow having ended up in Elmville. Her relationship with Fabian is also much more textured and mutual, whereas his relationship to Ivy is a simple struggle to impress her that ultimately goes nowhere.
  • Meaningful Name: Overlapping with Punny Name, Mazey is sly wordplay referencing the labyrinth that imprisoned the Greek Minotaur as well as a reference to her family's place of origin, and she shares her last name with the Minotaur's half-sister and the wife of Theseus who gave him the trick to find his way back through the maze, Ariadne.
  • Our Minotaurs Are Different: She's extremely friendly towards the bad kids as well as a graceful dancing bard, the complete opposite of the stereotypical minotaur.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: As class president and later acting principal, she's fully supportive of her fellow classmates and tries to make sure the school is a safe and comfortable space for them.

    Max Durden

Max Durden

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/max_durden.jpg
Race: Drow
Class: Warlock (The Hexblade)

An anti-establishment student. Joins the Owlbears in Junior Year.

  • Ascended Extra: Goes from an unnamed bit character in Freshman Year to a supporting NPC in the Boys' Night one-shot to a recurring character in Junior Year.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Going along with his anti-police stances, Max also frequently mentions conspiracies about the government. He also mentions believing that advertising was created by a secret council or nefarious purposes.
  • Erudite Stoner: Tries to be this after getting high at Fabian's party. His audience's reception is... mixed.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He was the kid yelling "Police State!" in Freshman Year.
  • Lovable Rogue: The high school variant. He's a rebellious teen that deals in various illegal partying habits, but he's a nice guy and a friend of the Bad Kids.

    Sprak LeFevre

Sprak LeFevre

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sprak_lefevre.jpg
Race: Goblin

President of the Aguefort Aviation League.

  • Ace Pilot: Allegedly. Its yet to be seen if his skill matches his enthusiasm.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Has the body of a 16 year-old and the voice of a World War 1 veteran.

    Gertie Bladeshield

Gertie Bladeshield

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gertie_bladeshield.png
Race: Firbolg
Class: Ranger (Swarmkeeper)

President and sole member of the Aguefort Apiarists' Society prior to Riz signing on.

  • Arch-Enemy: Fabian immediately gets on her bad side. The resulting grudge is enough to ping Fabian's Nemesis Alert.
  • Berserk Button: Don't insult her honey. A mild diss from Fabian is enough for her to attack Fabian in public.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: For all her kindness and generosity, she's still a student at Aguefort. All of that goes out the window when she's pissed, and she's able to keep up with Fabian in a duel.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Played for Laughs. She's got a crush on Kristen, but seeing as she's in the same party as Fabian, she considers any relationship with her impossible, outright calling her and Kristen "star-crossed".

The Rat Grinders

A rival adventuring party in Aguefort that the Bad Kids immediately take a dislike to. Their name is a reference to their intense training regime of killing tens of thousands of extremely weak enemies over and over (for three hours every day after school, and nine hours on weekends, every single week) instead of going on actual adventures.

    In General
  • Believing Their Own Lies: The Bad Kids theorize that the Rat Grinders' usage of Devil's Nectar led them to believe wholeheartedly the lies they may have spun about Lucy's death.
  • Foil: Each of the Rat Grinders is a parallel to one of the Bad Kids, mostly serving as dark mirrors of one of them.
    • Kipperlilly Copperkettle is Riz if his intense drive was pointed at petty nonsense instead of real change.
    • Ruben's shares Fig's countercultural views, but with none of her warmth and an antagonistic view to relationships that clashes with Fig's Undying Loyalty.
    • Mary Ann mirrors Gorgug in abilities and temperament without his passion, curiosity, and capacity for learning.
    • Buddy is what Kristen might've ended up like if she stayed with the Church of Helio, Holier Than Thou and close-minded.
    • Ivy appears to be a mirror of Fabian's role as The Heart, although his Jerk with a Heart of Gold tendencies vanish behind Ivy's manipulation.
    • Oisin is the least clear foil thus far. He and Adaine both Took a Level in Badass and improved their physical skills after intense trauma, but it's unclear if his reasons were quite as personal as Adaine's.
  • Level Grinding: They're experienced adventurers not because they've gone on any noteworthy quest, but because they were farming XP by killing rats behind the school; hence the party name The Rat Grinders.
  • The Psycho Rangers: They're a party of juniors that share the same class composition as Bad Kids, but possess none of their endearing qualities.
  • Meaningful Rename: They used to be called the High Five Heroes, but between Sophomore Year and Junior Year, they became the Rat Grinders.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: They're junior year peers that are nowhere near a worldwide threat, and yet the Bad Kids have taken an extreme hatred towards them.
  • Take That!: The party is a big one towards XP farmers that would rather grind low-level encounters than actually experience the game. Additionally, each Grinder seen so far represents a different kind of problem player.
    • Kipperlilly is a Rules Lawyer — she knows the bylaws of Aguefort inside and out, and uses the fine print to get her way. Her campaign platform is built on honesty and fairness, despite the fact her party is getting stronger by doing something that goes against the school's mission statement.
    • Ruben is the resident edgelord. He's the most openly hostile towards the Bad Kids and built his stardom on emotionally immature Emo music.
    • Mary Ann is one for uninvested players. She doesn't care what's going on around her; she shows up, does what's required of her, then fades into the background. When forced to talk to people, she speaks as few words as possible and leaves at the first opportunity.
    • Buddy invokes the Holier Than Thou behavior certain cleric and paladin players exhibit. He sees himself as above the issues in the world around him and absolves himself of the deaths his magic has caused.
    • Ivy and Oisin are thus far the only ones without clear problem player archetypes, though Ivy does have a nasty streak and takes pleasure in manipulating people and being a horrible influence on the group.
  • Unknown Rival: The Bad Kids are shocked to learn that the squad "famously" hated them throughout Freshmen and Sophomore Year, despite the fact that they were completely unaware of the Rat Grinders' existence until Junior Year. At one point Adaine ontologically proves their lack of significance by casting Legend Lore on Kipperlilly Copperkettle, which provides no information because the target isn't of legendary importance.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: They were originaly called the High Five Heroes, and their freshman yearbook photo shows them being a lot more happier and innocent. What caused them hate The Bad Kids and become the Grinders is one of the driving mysteries of Junior Year.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The story of how their name was changed implies that their teamwork is not the best, as Ruben relishes in the chances to antagonize Kipperlilly and Mary-Ann is too uncommunicative to be helpful.

    Kipperlilly Copperkettle

Kipperlilly Copperkettle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kipperlilly_copperkettle.jpg
"Oh, that won't be necessary. I've aced junior year."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Halfling
Class: Rogue (Mastermind)

An overachieving junior student who's in the running for the next student election.

  • Academic Alpha Bitch: She's a brilliant, overachieving student whose grating personality repulses the Bad Kids.
  • Berserk Button: Riz. She's been to Jawbone's office several times since freshman year due to unknown anger associated with him.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: She's Penny Luckstone with all of the ambition and none of the sweetness. She's also this for Riz, as Jawbone is quick to point out.
  • Cutting the Knot: One can ace their rogue classes for the year by locating the rogue teacher, an incredibly challenging task seeing as they're a master of stealth and also a ghost capable of all sorts of ethereal tricks. Kipperlily did it by renting a backhoe to dig up the teacher's grave, as finding their body would technically count as finding the teacher, and she ends up succeeding when the panicked teacher manifested to her to defend their grave. According to said rogue teacher when Riz later manages to talk to them, she's quite fond of solutions like this as a mastermind rogue, by approaching situations people have rigged to their advantage by cutting through or around them.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She's described as having had "a tremendous fondness" for Lucy Frostblade and had described her as the only one in her party who "gets it". Lucy was the only one who sided with Kipperlily against changing the party name to the Ratgrinders.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Deconstructed. Kipperlilly's obsession with fairness is partly fueled by her insecurities of being a plain, upper-middle class kid in a school of exceptional people with interesting lives. This devolved into her believing that a tragic backstory and personal trauma make you an inherently better adventurer. This leads her to combing through her family history for something remotely interesting, wishing her parents had gotten eaten by Kalvaxus, and resenting the Bad Kids because in her eyes their individual baggage gives them a leg up.
  • Go-Getter Girl: She manages to ace her entire junior year by accomplishing the task of "finding the Rogue professor", freeing up the rest of the year to her student presidential campaign all while gathering intel on the Bad Kids.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: As her file from Jawbone states, she was initially jealous of the Bad Kids for all of the trauma they had been through during Freshman and Sophomore Years, to the point that she broke into her parents' emails hoping to find they were up to some evil shit and said she was envious of Riz because his dad was killed by Kalvaxus.
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: In-Universe. She's elicited a stronger hatred from the Bad Kids than most of their villains before it was revealed she was actually evil.
Adaine: That girl is worse than Kalvaxus. I know Kalvaxus was bad. She is our greatest enemy yet.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: She's a complete asshole in her way to go about it, but she has grounds to question Kristen's willingness to take her campaign for school president seriously, considering how Kristen has already killed YES! out of neglect.
  • Malicious Misnaming: The victim of it as the Bad Kids almost never get her name right, sometimes because they can't remember it and sometimes out of deliberate spite. Her wiki page keeps track of all of the various names they've given her, like Kipperlilly Copperpetal (a genuine mistake), Mollykiggins Kippermedley (general disdain), and Clamface Cunthead (actual hatred).
  • Preppy Name: As Kristen put it, her name sounds like a combination of four show dogs.
  • What You Are in the Dark: At least two of them, Buddy and Lucy, were killed and had the choice to come back as a servant of Ankarna. Lucy refused, sticking to her guns, as Ruben put it, while Buddy accepted, forsaking his worship of Helio that he was so Holier Than Thou about, to get a second chance at life.
  • Xanatos Speed Chess: When Kristen spots her as she's lining up a killing shot on the proctor of The Last Stand, she immediately slits Buddy's throat to stop him from reviving the Bad Kids after the test.

    Ruben Hopclap

Ruben Hopclap

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ruben_hopclap.png
"Wow. Did you just come from a room full of cigarettes and peach schnapps?"

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Gnome
Class: Bard

An emo bard who wrote the song of the summer.

    Mary Ann Skuttle

Mary Ann Skuttle

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mary_ann_skuttle.jpg
"Okay. Bye."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Kobold
Class: Barbarian

A nonplussed, low-energy kobold girl trying out for the Bloodrush Team.

  • Corrupted Character Copy: She's Gorgug with none of the emotional investment.
  • The Dreaded: The Bad Kids (and their players) pretty much unanimously agree that Mary Ann is somehow the most intimidating of the Rat Grinders without even having to try after her effortless Curb-Stomp Battle against Gorgug during the Bloodrush Tryouts.
Lou: Honestly, I'm not afraid of any of the other ones. Only Mary Ann.
  • Emotionless Girl: Shows nothing but apathy for everyone and everything.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Shows up to the Bloodrush Tryouts and shows zero interest... then rolls a 35 against Gorgug, nearly caving in his chest and ripping his arm off. She then brushes off pretty much all follow-up questions and leaves for the day.

     Oisin Hakinvar

Oisin Hakinvar

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oisin_hakinvar.jpg
"It's all a system. This is just geometry and applied... physics."
Race: Dragonborn
Class: Wizard (Conjuration)

A Dragonborn wizard associated with The Rat Grinders. Had a growth spurt over the summer.

  • Corrupted Character Copy: Oisin serves as Adaine's opposite number, but with none of her family, societal, or anxiety issues.
  • I Got Bigger: Apparently had a growth spurt over the summer, though this is the first time we meet him.
  • Living Distant Ancestor: Has one of these in the form of an ancient dragon. He barely knows his ancestor, but gets his spell components from her.
  • Power Tattoo: This being Solace, he got tattoos to help him with his conjuration spells.
  • Token Good Teammate: He's the only Ratgrinder to not have had an antagonistic first meeting with his Bad Kids counterpart, having a pleasant conversation with Adaine and suggesting they study together sometime. Later he tries to calm his party down from arguing with the Bad Kids and apologises to Adaine for his party's actions. There are some hints he may be crushing on her, such as him offering her the diamonds she needs for her classes and remembering the exact class they shared in their freshman year.note  Him seemingly using mephits to steal Fabian's Cloud Rider engine and definitely helping Kipperlilly sabotage The Last Stand does throw up his status as this in the air, based on how willing of a participant he was.

     Ivy Embra

Ivy Embra

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ivy_embra.jpg
"Your ping-pong table's fucked up. Legs are different lengths, yeah?"
Race: Eladrin Elf
Class: Ranger, Fighter

The Rat Grinders fighter.

  • Betty and Veronica: The icy and aloof Veronica to Mazey's Betty for Fabian's Archie.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: She's a gender-flipped Fabian with all the social skills he can only pretend to have, but with none of his warmth or generosity.
  • Fantastic Racism: She compares Mazey to an animal when she realizes Fabian is quite close to her, implying she's quite bigoted against minotaurs.
Ivy: If it gets cold, you can wear her like a sweater, I guess.
  • Jerkass: She is very smug, but not quite as hostile to the Bad Kids as Ruben. However she does insult Mazey for wanting to play Twister at a party.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Being a bad influence on those around her seems to be her primary motivation. Per Kipperlilly's file, Ivy and Oisin were best friends within the group, and were the ones who pitched the name Rat Grinders over the objection of Kipperlilly and Lucy, and she seems to take pleasure in bringing out the worst in people.

     Buddy Dawn

Buddy Dawn

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/buddy_dawn.jpg
"Oh my God! A servant of the Devil!"
Race: Human
Class: Cleric of Helio formerly, currently Ankarna
A cleric of Helio who joined the Rat Grinders at the start of junior year
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Towards Kristen, at the very least. His words are jovial and polite, but it's clear he resents Kristen for abandoning the cult of Helio.
  • Came Back Wrong: After Kipperlilly kills him, he's revived by a giant and converts to the worship of Ankarna, especially notable because he's a cleric and obnoxiously devoted to Helio.
  • Corrupted Character Copy: He's this for Kristen, had she stayed in the Church of Helio.
  • Crystal Dragon Jesus: In case the mannerisms of Helio's followers didn't make it clear enough, his white short-sleeved shirt with a black tie makes him a Mormon in everything but name.
  • Holier Than Thou: He's a cleric of Helio, after all. His treatment of "non-believers" ranges from polite condescension at best to thinly-veiled disdain at worst.
  • Hypocrite: Despite passive-aggressively calling out Kristen for switching deities and being so proud of his worship of Helio, he's revived as a cleric of Ankarna. Which wouldn't be damning, if Kristen didn't figure out that people revived in such a way can choose not to come back, as Yolanda Badgood and Lucy Frostblade did, meaning this was a conscious rejection of Helio on his part.
  • Minnesota Nice: Takes some "bad baby milk" from Fabian, though it's pretty clear he doesn't want any. He later gives it back.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Enforced. He was assigned to the Rat Grinders to be their new cleric after Lucy died. The other Grinders don't seem too close to him and Kipperlilly and Oisin have no issue killing him when they're caught during The Last Stand.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Gets his throat slit by Kipperlilly to keep him from reviving the Bad Kids after The Last Stand.

     Lucy Frostblade

Lucy Frostblade

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucy_frostblade.jpg
Race: Frost Genasi
Class: Cleric of Ruvina
The Rat Grinder's cleric before Buddy.
  • An Ice Person: A Frost Genasi.
  • Friend to All Living Things: Of her party, she was the only one who actually cared about the monsters they were constantly slaughtering. She'd spend time reviving them after the other Grinders had left.
  • I Choose to Stay: The reason her body has clerical magic of Ankarna that's stopping her from being resurrected is that, when given the choice to come back under the influence of Ankarna, she refused.
  • Posthumous Character: Murdered shortly after her Sophomore Year.
  • Spanner in the Works: The kindness she showed to the rats would eventually lead to The Bad Kids discover her and Yolanda'a bodies, revealing evidence and putting pressure on their killers.
  • Token Good Teammate: By far the kindest Grinder, if her treatment of the rats compared to the other Grinders is anything to go by.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Heavily implied to have been killed by the other Grinders when she refused to go along with their plan.

Other

The Council of Chosen

    Cuspin Clark

Agent Cuspin Clark

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/agent_cuspin_clark.png

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Aarakocra

An agent of the Council of Chosen investigating a truancy issue at Aguefort.

  • Dropping the Bombshell: Downplayed. He probably did explain things beforehand to soften the blow during his speech at the assembly, but the Bad Kids weren't paying attention for most of it, so all they heard was "All fun and games until doppelgangers burn your nest!"
  • Inspector Javert: He's chasing after someone (read: Fig) at the school who keeps using various disguises and alter egos to dodge classes and cause chaos. It turns out part of it is due to a personal hatred of doppelgangers.
  • Skewed Priorities: He was apparently at the Frostyfaire Folk Festival when Grix went berserk and attacked everyone, but he only piped up when it seemed Wanda Childa made her getaway.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Fig's alternate personas usually only last as long as she needs them to. This results in what looks like a missing persons case, and someone needs to investigate that.
  • Villainy-Free Villain: Agent Clark is just doing his job. He's just also doing it against the Bad Kids.

The Red Wastes

    The Night Yorb

The Night Yorb

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/night_yorb.jpg

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: ???

The apocalyptic entity of darkness beyond life that Riz unleashed at the end of Sophomore Year.

  • Animalistic Abomination: A world-ending abomination in the form of a flying manta ray.
  • Ascended Meme: Originally just a running gag created from the cast looking for a Significant Anagram in Garthy O'Brien's name, but by the time of Junior Year has appeared as an apocalyptic entity.
  • Big Bad: Played for Laughs: it was the villain of the Bad Kids summer break between Sophomore and Junior years and is a major threat to the world, but all the audience sees of that story arc is the very beginning and the final battle against it, which reduces the Night Yorb to the Starter Villain of Junior year.
  • The Dreaded: The Hangvan and the Hangman don't agree on much, but they both agree not to speak of the Night Yorb, and that it's no joke.
  • Lovecraft Lite: A horrid entity of darkness that will end the world if not stopped, plunges the land into an eternal night, and has killed before — but it's treated as a joke, down to appearing more like a silly manta ray than a horror of the night.
  • The Night That Never Ends: How it's been destroying the world over summer break. At the beginning of Junior Year, it's been 4 months since the last time anyone saw the sun.
  • The Scottish Trope: The Hangman and the Hangvan agree that the Night Yorb should not be spoken of. As Riz shows, that's because mentioning it too much releases it into the world.
    • During the encounter that opens Junior Year, saying the Night Yorb's name makes it regain health. Since the ritual to seal it away requires it to be below a certain health threshold, this is extremely bad.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Fig manages to seal it inside a sigil on the Hangvan.
  • Starter Villain: The final battle against it is also the first of the campaign, after which it's sealed into Gorgug's van.

    Allies against the N.Y.

In General

The Bad Kids' close allies and good friends they met over the summer break between sophomore and junior year.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Played for comedy, beginning when Brennan introduces Squeem as an established and beloved character and continuing as he introduces new characters throughout the combat of the first episode.
  • Throw It In!: A good chunk of Episode 1 is the players making up whatever they want about these characters from their offscreen adventures against the Night Yorb.

Squeem

"Squeem!"

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Crystal

A crystal being who only says his own name.

  • Heroic Sacrifice: He throws himself from the Hangvan to tackle away a Yorbie. Squeem instantly eats shit on the jump and is beset by Yorbies, but surprisingly survives thanks to transforming Fig's discarded crystal into a sword.
  • Pokémon Speak: Seems only capable of saying his own name.

Ecaf

"Please, the energy is horrifying."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Magic Mirror

A magic mirror who helped teach the Bad Kids the magic to defeat the Night Yorb.

  • Clap Your Hands If You Believe: She reflects the energy that's put into her, since she's a mirror. Fabian started flirting with her immediately so she flirts back — but when she's around Kristen, who's less enthusiastic about it, Ecaf is notably more exasperated by him.
  • Disney Death: Ecaf is shattered during the battle against the Night Yorb, and the rest of the Bad Kids lie to Fabian and claim she was working for the Night Yorb and fled in order to spare his feelings. They then realize they can use Mending to repair her, bringing Ecaf back to life.
  • The Lost Lenore: Played for Laughs, with Fabian treating her loss like the death of a love interest and being deeply hurt by her "betrayal".
  • Put on a Bus: Realizing that Fabian's relationship with Ecaf is deeply unhealthy, Adaine convinces Ecaf to enter her Jacket of Many Things and live in the city within in order to keep their lies to Fabian about her fate intact.
  • Sdrawkcab Name: It's Face, which is all she really is in the mirror.

Balthazar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fhjy_balthazar.png

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Human

A silver fox veteran warrior, and partner of Duggan.

  • Ascended to a Higher Plane of Existence: After the Night Yorb is absorbed into the Hangvan's sigil, Balthazar can be seen in the new sigil holding a stock pose of stoic openness, his legs crossed and each hand hovering over a copy of his own shadow. Gorgug interprets this to mean that Balthazar has become one with the universe.
  • Back for the Dead: A 'well established' character, but he dies within the first round of fight against the Night Yorb.

Duggan McCann

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duggan_mccann.png
"You tell me I'm late again, I'll tell you to go sit on a whiskey bottle, you punk bitch."

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Centaur

A grizzled older warrior, and partner of Balthazar

  • The Alcoholic: He shows up to the Night Yorb fight utterly wasted.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Potentially. He dies when the Night Yorb is defeated and the sun rises for the first time in months, claiming this to be the reason, but Riz notes that his body doesn't turn to dust. Gorgug even claims to see him crawling away afterwards. Brennan doesn't contradict either of them, and the Bad Kids assume that he was just so drunk that the return of the very bright sun incapacitated him for a bit.

The Rage Domain

    The Dead God

Ankarna

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: God

A deceased god of rage and fire that begins to stir at the start of junior year. All evidence of their existence was wiped from the material plane, but they seem to have history with Casandra.

Its eventually revealed that she is Ankarna, a Giant goddess of Justice and the Summer, as well as Cassandra's partner. She later fell to the Infernal pantheon for unknown reasons, becoming a god of rage and conquest in order to retain her power.

  • Foil: To Cassandra, their lover.
    • Their domains directly oppose each other. Cassandra's core tenant is Doubt, which invokes elements of the unknown and twilight. Ankarna was a goddess of Justice (truths brought to light) and the Summer sun.
    • Both cheated death and Came Back Wrong, albeit in different ways and in different orders. Cassandra was able to escape the destruction of her following by turning herself into the Nightmare King, losing her identity in the process. Ankarna fell to the Infernal pantheon prior to her death and was forced to "play the hits" with her following to retain power, which slowly converted them into a warmonger.
    • Their modern-day followings are attempting to rebuild in opposing ways. Kristen is trying to build her flock organically in spite of her short comings while Ankarna's minions are forcibly conscripting people by killing them and desecrating their bodies beyond the reach of resurrection, only reviving them if they give in to Ankarna's influence.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Cassandra.
  • Un-person: In order to prevent gods from bringing their peers back to life by funneling worshipers to them, all evidence of a dead god's existence is erased and anyone who remembers them is sworn to silence through a law called obliviati mori. This does not extend to evidence lost to time, like a name carved in a standing stone that sunk into the dirt over the course of centuries.

    Bakur

Bakur/Athenriel

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Pit Fiend

A devil that terrorized Spire in an attempt to revive his master. He was defeated by Lydia Barkrok's party and sealed in a gem in her chest. He was originally an elf named Athenriel, Fig's ancestor who worshipped Ankarna and fell with her into the Infernal pantheon.

  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Eternally loyal to his master. When asked about her after obliviati mori is lifted, the first thing he does is eulogize her with palpable grief in his voice.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Lydia's rage has kept him trapped in his gem for years.

The Vulture Dimension

    The Vulture King

The Vulture King

Played by: Brennan Lee Mulligan

Race: Vulture

Subrace: God? (Ambiguous)

The King of all Vultures.

  • All-Powerful Bystander: An incredibly powerful progenitor of all vultures, who doesn't care about anything except vultures.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: The Vulture King is concerned not with good or evil, but "vulture or non-vulture."
  • Life-or-Death Question: The Riddle of the Vulture Dimension: "Vultures, yea or nay?" The group answers yea, and are bequeathed royal artifacts, but if they had answered nay, the Vulture King makes it clear they all would have been killed by his overwhelming power.
  • Physical God: Appears to be this, being incredibly powerful and linked to all vultures that exist in the world of Spyre, but is also uncertain himself about whether or not he is a divinity.
  • Nigh Omnipotent: Within the Vulture Dimension, he demonstrates the ability to utterly veto all of the players' bits and attempts to cheat his riddle, demonstrating him to be more powerful than Sol, Kalvaxus, and the Night Yorb combined.
  • Vile Vulture: Downplayed. While the Vulture King is weird, gorey, and unconcerned with typical morality, he does honor the terms of his Riddle.
