The Changeling Spring Court

"Gentle is the warmth of the sun in Spring. Splendid are the ones that came from its Court."

Also known as the "Court of Roses", the Spring Court is one of two 'official' Changeling Courts. and by far the largest among all the Courts. Their Hives and Swarms are ruled by Changeling Queens, of which Chrysalis had been one of them until recently. Ironically, unlike Chrysalis they are among the most benevolent and fairest of Changelingkind. Yet though they are among the best of Changelingkind, they are not without skeletons in her closet...
    open/close all folders

    General
  • Boomerang Bigot: They were largely responsible for Apterus becoming a Tragic Villain because they detested her for being the hybrid child of a Changeling Queen and a Dragon Lord. This makes every Spring Court royal that did so hypocrites, since every single one of them was sired by Blackrose and a member of a different race, making them hybrids themselves. They also bullied Queen Odonata for being half-Kirin, since she retained enough draconic traits that she reminded her siblings of a dragon, and would have repeated the cycle of hate had Puck, Blackrose, and other kind family members intervened.
  • The Clan: All the Changeling Queens are related by blood to their matriarch, Blackrose the Changeling Empress.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of The High Queen. While most Changeling Queens are benevolent, they tend to act superior and patronizing, and they don't hide their hatred for Dragonkind. Their flaws and biases later played a huge role in the creation of Apterus, as they were so racist against Dragonkind that they didn't help Apterus or her parents, Queen Acherontia and Dragon Lord Vulcan, in any way. However, it's reconstructed in Queens who don't share this racism, and rightfully objected against family members who participated in the aforementioned incident.
  • Fantastic Racism: Deconstructed. Like the Kings of the Summer Court, the Queens of the Spring Court loathe Dragonkind for the atrocities they have inflicted upon Changelingkind. When they forcibly separated Queen Acherontia from her dragon husband, and sealed away both of them as punishment for daring to fall in love with each other, it led to the rise of Apterus, who was traumatized by her parents' disappearances (among other things). Likewise, they also hated Apterus for being a dragon-changeling hybrid, despite being racial hybrids themselves. Of course, this bit them in the ass later when even the gods and goddesses themselves called them out on their racism, with Luminiferous stating how petty they were in trying to fulfill their revenge instead of trying to break the Curse that's plaguing their people. There are exceptions to this belief, including Queen Odonata who utterly despises racism due to being a target of it and Queen Zoraptera Avalon also went out of her way to make cures for the dragon strains of the Crucible Virus for no other reason than it was the right thing to do for example. Also, when Queen Odonata was born, many of her sisters shunned and bullied her out of disgust for resembling a dragon, to the point where one of them physically tried to harm her. Fortunately, Puck, Blackrose, and other kind family members intervened so Odonata wouldn't become another Apterus.
  • God-Emperor: Gender-inverted. The matriarch of the Spring Court and its Queens is the Changeling Empress, who is also the Co-Progenitor of Changelingkind.
  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Mostly benevolent and fair, but as mentioned also produces their share of 'bad apples' like Chrysalis (and she isn't the only one). Even some of their more reasonable members can be a bit arrogant, racist, stubborn, and patronizing.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Not by a long shot. They are generally fair and benevolent, but if anything threatens them, their subjects and their Court, they can and will mess them up.
  • Gentleman and a Scholar: Gender-inverted due to the Spring Court being completely matriarchal. While Changeling culture in general have a predisposition towards high culture, the Changeling Empress, her daughters and her granddaughters are famous among Changelingkind for being patrons of high arts, and are very cultured themselves.
  • Guile Hero: Like the Changeling civilization as a whole, the Spring Court values guile and deception over brute force, and while having their share of flaws embody the heroic side of Changelingkind along with the Autumn Court.
  • The High Queen: All of the rulers of the Spring Court are very benevolent people, give or take a few bad apples. However, it's deconstructed that their benevolence doesn't extend to certain races, as most of the Royal Changelings are very racist towards Dragonkind to the point of separating and sealing one of their own for falling in love with a Dragon Lord. Racism aside, even the more benevolent Queens aren't above acting superior and patronizing towards their subjects, especially if they decide to leave their Court for reasons. It's reconstructed with Blackrose - while she wasn't perfect, her brief stint in tyranny before and during the First-Spawn Rebellion ended when a dying daughter's Armor-Piercing Response caused her to realize what she had become. She also tried toning down her racism in the presence of dragons and reincarnating Apterus back into a Changeling egg so her parents would be able to raise her this time.
  • Holier Than Thou: Benevolent as they are, most Changeling Queens and even the Empress herself aren't safe from this attitude. While they're willing to be lenient with dissenters, they still believe that being Changeling royals automatically makes them entitled for the right to rule, and only they know what's best for their subjects. Anyone who decides to leave their Court is "ungrateful" because they're rejecting their rulers' love and protection, and they undermine their legitimacy simply by existing.
  • Land of Faerie: Avalon, the Radiant Valley is the capital of the Spring Court and the Changeling Empress' own residence and kingdom. Considered the greatest hive among the Changeling Courts and is an oasis of Changeling culture and prosperity. Avalon palace and many buildings are architectural masterpieces covered in plant life from the Changeling Empress' many gardens, and is extremely huge, considering the Changeling Empress' throne room by itself is big enough to have a door and space for Queen Supia.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The trauma of the "Burning of Amorea" made many Changeling Queens extremely racist towards all Dragons. When they learned Queen Acherontia fell in love with a Dragon Lord and sired a hybrid daughter with him, they attacked the innocent family out of hatred, and essentially abandoned the then-infant Apterus to her fate. This ends up biting them in the collective flank when a grown-up Apterus, driven by hatred and revenge, went on a destructive rampage to reclaim what she believed was rightfully "hers". Those Changeling Queens who didn't buy into the racism were appalled by their siblings' cruelty, with Queen Pentatomidae avoiding her family for 500 years, and Princess/Captain Mimetidae punching her mother, Empress Blackrose, for her cruel actions.
  • Loophole Abuse: A Changeling Queen from the Far East was once confronted with a conundrum when a fight with a Winter Court exiled sister devolved into a close-quarters brawl (having both exhausted their reserves of magic, weapons and cunning), with the Winter Court sister tries to forestall her inevitable defeat by asking if she would hit her own sister with her hooves, trying to appeal to her oriental family values. The Far Eastern Changeling Queen concurs that's a good point and declares that she will 'not raise a hoof against one's flesh and blood'... before picking up a rock and beat her unconcious with it.
  • Matriarchy: Being the counterpart of the Summer Court, the Spring Court in general is ruled by Blackrose, the Changeling Empress. All hives within the court are ruled by her daughters, who are Queens. However, Prince Puck enjoys a high position as his mother's closest advisor/chancellor, holding duties and secrets that Blackrose wouldn't normally share with her daughters.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: This is how the Spring Court normally deals with Autumn hives. Whenever they find one, the Queens attempt to lure the Autumn hive back into mainstream society with diplomatic promises of political and social leniency, and remedying any problems that caused the dissenting Changelings to leave their original Court. Meanwhile, they secretly beseige the Autumn hive by blocking outside help and preventing anyone from leaving or attacking, so the Changelings will have no choice but to surrender.
  • Red Baron: Collectively known as the 'Radiant Court' and the 'Fairest of the Fae'.
  • Semi-Divine: All the Changeling Queens are demigods, being related to the Changeling Empress. This becomes a plot point later on — because none of them managed to Ascend to true godhood like their mother did, they came to believe and accept that such a feat is impossible. Those Changeling Queens who did manage to become true goddesses, like Queen Ganglia, end up completely flipping the status quo as they are now superior to their demi-divine half-sisters, including those who are chronologically older.
  • Women Are Wiser: Unlike the Summer Court's tyrannical, cruel, and scheming Changeling Kings, the Spring Court's Changeling Queens are benevolent, wise, and fair, and thus enjoy a much better reputation with the outside world than their Summer counterparts. However, it's deconstructed as even the Changeling Queens have made their own fair share of mistakes, and it's noted that the "Burning of Amorea" event affected many of them so badly that they became racist towards Dragons, and deeply obsessed with survival. The "Revenge of Apterus" event is a prominent exampe of this, as the Changeling Queens' cruelty towards Queen Acherontia's family later made them targets of Princess Apterus' vengeful rampages. Their collective unwillingness to let go of the trauma stemming from the "Burning of Amorea" event also stunted them psychologically and physically, to the point where many Changeling Queens were unable to grow past their "sub-imago" phase.

    Blackrose, the Changeling Empress

Court Affiliation: Spring

"A mother loves her children. She doesn't have to love what they do."

Empress Blackrose (her entry here) is the matriarch of the Spring Court, the Mother of Changelingkind, and one of the most beloved and benevolent figures among her people. She is notably the mother of Chrysalis and her siblings, whom she loved very much — but as Chrysalis demonstrated, even her love and patience has limits and she will neither hesitate nor tolerate if any of her daughters goes too far down a dark path. Has a past and relationship with Discord and her counterpart in the Summer Court that is best described as... complex.
  • Abusive Parents: Was implied to be this during her old God Save Us from the Queen! days before the First-Spawn Rebellion. She definitely was this to her Zeroth Spawn children, who she sired with Blackthorn while under the Love Poison's influence, as her rage and hate over the event was directed at them for being related to her rapist. The twins, Danaus and her brother Actias, both have physical and psychological scars from the abuse. Rosedust has come to seriously regret being this and tries to make amends after her Jerkass Realization, but admits her oldest children have every right to hate her for how she treated them.
  • Ambiguous Situation: While she's confirmed to have been a Flutter Pony ruler named Rosedust, it's ambiguous whether or not she's the original Queen Rosedust or one of her descendants, all of which used the same name. She's referred to as a Princess, but given the setting and that to have descendants on the throne she would've had to advocate it herself, she could've returned to the throne and changed her title for a variety of reasons. Adding to it is the depiction of the Hearts and Hooves Day Princess shows she was an Alicorn, meaning she easily could've been the original after becoming an immortal demi-goddess or full goddess. Only she, Blackthorn, and Discord likely know for sure, and none of them have reason to talk.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: She was on the receiving end on this by Queen Pentatomidae, who was completely disgusted with how she and her other daughters treated Queen Acherontia for falling in love with a dragon, to the point where she shunned her family for 500 years. It stuck, as Blackrose, wanting to atone for her actions, proceeded to release Apterus's parents from their sealing and reincarnate Apterus into a newborn egg after she was put down.
  • Canon Character All Along: Is heavily implied to be the Hearts And Hooves Day Princess, and is speculated to be her even in-universe. She's also heavily implied to be Queen Rosedust, or at least her descendant. Both of these are eventually confirmed, though which Rosedust she was is still a mystery.
  • Child by Rape: It's eventually revealed that she and Blackthorn have children together that happened before the Fall. Given Rosedust's abuse of them was directly because of how they were born, the implication is she and Blackthorn conceived them under the Love Poison, and thus was done against Rosedust's actual will. Unusual example as, because he was also under the Love Poison, Blackthorn didn't intend to do this either, even if it was his own fault for using it.
  • Classical Anti-Hero: She is undoubtedly heroic, friendly, and noble... but she's also deeply flawed. Her most prominent flaws are her fury, her vindictiveness towards those who wronged her, her staunch Fantastic Racism towards Dragons, and her inability to move on from her Dark and Troubled Past. Much of her character arc involves being forced to reexamine herself and her actions for what they are, realize that she has problems, and try to make amends with those she genuinely hurt. Come the War Against Order Arc, decades in the future, and it seems she's lost the 'anti' part.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Though genuinely friendly and noble, beneath her facade she is a mother who had endured an existence of loss and regrets which still haunts her ages after their occurrence - The single most important of which concerns her origins as the Mother of All Changelings and the dawn of her mortal children. Like many secrets of the Changelings, this dark and troubled past remain known only to herself and her those closest to her. Unsurprising, considering she's none other than the Hearts and Hooves Day Princess.
  • The Dreaded: Being their patriarch's equal, the Summer Court Changeling Kings and their subjects have an almost primal, instinctive fear of Empress Blackrose. Given their implied backstory, Discord is also uneasy about her.
  • Evil Matriarch: Believe it or not, she was not always the nicest parent. The events that led to her becoming Mother of All Changelings initially left her filled with bitterness and rage, which twisted her into a cruel and vindictive tyrant and matriarch to both her family and subjects, to the point that for a long time there was no difference between the two official Courts. It took a Civil War in the form of her First-Spawn daughters revolting against her - resulting in most of them dying and her Court in ruins - that finally made her realize what she let herself become and cause her to change back to the loving mother and benevolent empress she is today.
  • Fatal Flaw: Wrath. While a generally good person, the grudges she holds towards others have caused her to make poor and/or amoral decisions that have caused pain and destruction for herself and the Spring Court. She eventually begins to realize she's got this problem, but only after it's come back to bite her numerous times. This culminates in her realizing her anger at Blackthorn and anger over the Hearts and Hooves Day incident was causing her to avoid actually addressing that pain and anger for aeons. As a result, she began working towards letting go of her hatred and changing for the better, such as finally forgiving the dragons for the Burning of Amorea.
  • Five Stages of Grief: Despite being ancient, she's remained in the Anger stage of grief over the Fall and the Burning of Amorea, resulting in her Fatal Flaw of Wrath. She eventually realizes she's also stuck in Denial, trying to refuse acknowledging or speaking about it, allowing her pain to fester for millennia. She finally begins moving towards Acceptance after this.
  • Forgiveness: With her realization that her Fatal Flaw of Wrath is causing suffering and costing her too much for too long, she begins making an earnest effort to forgive those who she's let herself hold onto grudges on for far too long.
    • While she hasn't forgiven him yet, she tells Blackthorn she genuinely wants to forgive him someday.
    • In perhaps one of the most earthshaking ones, seeing what Despotic Destiny and Broken Harmony's grudge on Discord turned them into, she finally faces her grudge against Dragonkind and forgives them.
  • God-Emperor: Gender-inverted; As the immortal Empress of the Spring Court, and also the Co-Progenitor of Changelingkind, she is one. That being said, she has a very hands-off approach, letting her daughters rule their own hives as they saw fit and only intervening if they need help or goes bad.
  • Good Parents: One of the most jarring thing about her when compared to her wayward daughter, Chrysalis, is just how incredibly nice, gentle and loving she is to her subjects and her family. Even more jarring once we found out that it wasn't always the case...
  • Heel Realization: She used to be far more villainous, but the First Spawn Rebellion caused her to realize that she'd become a monster and try to change.
  • The High Queen: Empress, but still counts. She's beautiful, compassionate and good, and is a goddess among Changelings to boot.
  • Hypocrite: As shown with her mistreatment of her daughter Queen Acherontia, her husband Dragon Lord Vulcan, and their daughter Princess Apterus, she is deeply racist against Dragonkind and has similarly low opinions of Changeling-Dragon hybrids... but she's perfectly fine with her other daughters being hybrids, having sired them herself through fathers from various non-Changeling races. It's deconstructed during the 'Revenge of Apterus' event, as not only some of her more benevolent family members are disgusted and angry with her (with one daughter outright punching her in the face), the public reveal of what she and her more racist family members had done to Apterus and her parents has provoked both deities and mortals alike into calling out the entire Spring Court. To her credit, she has recognized this and is making personal efforts in atoning for her sins, including forgiving both Tiamat and Bahamut for their children's horrible actions during the 'Burning of Amorea' event.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: She largely keeps her domains outside of Changelings private. During her fight with Broken Harmony, she reveals that one of them relates to light and starts utilizing it. And then there's her 'Discord Killer' form.
  • Interspecies Romance: Unlike Blackthorn, who primarily chooses sires for scions for pragmatic reasons and rarely, if ever, stays with them after, Blackrose only has children with people she's genuinely fallen in love with. While she's had countless mates over her long life and on some level she does factor pragmatic reasons into it (such as siring a child to protect a specific kingdom from the Summer Court via the Throne Accords), she still considers every last one her lover. She is currently in a relationship with King Kamili.
  • It's Personal:
    • Has a massive grudge against Discord that she held since the dawn of their existence, though has put it on the back-burner for now after Discord reformed and even helped break the Curse that afflicted their people.
    • To a lesser extent, she also holds a grudge towards her male counterpart in the Summer Court, Emperor Blackthorn for reasons unknown, even though he still loves her. Unsurprising, given he's the one who got her and Changelingkind cursed in the first place. Deconstructed, as she eventually realizes her refusal to let go of her past and grudge on him is hurting her and her loved ones and admits she hopes one day she'll be able to forgive him.
    • She also has a huge grudge against Dragonkind ever since they instigated the 'Burning of Amorea'. This gets deconstructed as, while already internally conflicted, her antipathy for Dragonkind caused her to make the objectively cruel decision against one of her daughters, Queen Acherontia, for falling in love with Dragon Lord Vulcan by separating them and sealing them away, while she did not do much to find out what happened to their child Apterus, unwittingly leaving her hybrid grandaughter to be abused by a Changeling King in gods-knows-where. All this later bit her in the ass when her actions alienated a few children who were rightfully horrified and angry with their mother, and Apterus came back years later to enact a Roaring Rampage of Revenge and get what's rightfully 'hers'. It got so bad that Blackrose had to release Acherontia and Vulcan to deal with her. After Apterus was killed, Blackrose tried to make amends - first by reincarnating Apterus into an egg so she could be raised properly, and recorded it in literature and plays so no one would repeat her heinous actions again. It is mentioned after Toxikon and the Crucible Crisis that she is noticed correcting herself in her use of racial slurs against Dragonkind. She eventually chooses to forgive them entirely after realizing her Fatal Flaw of Wrath.
  • Jerkass Realization: The breaking of the Masquerade has forced her to have a rapid fire series of these due to being confronted with events that forced her to reexamine herself. The biggest was gradually realizing how much her anger and hate has poisoned her. This leads to her choosing to try and overcome it and finally heal.
  • Light 'em Up: While what it is is still unknown, it's confirmed during her fight with Broken Harmony that she has a divine domain relating to light.
  • Legacy Character: The reason it's ambiguous which Rosedust she actually was: it was customary for each Flutter Pony ruler to be named Rosedust, so she could just as easily be the original Queen Rosedust from G1 as one of her descendants.
  • Mood-Swinger: It's noted in her entries that when she let her personality show beneath her facade, it can vary incredibly depending on situation: she can be warm, approachable, friendly and even energetic on her best days to her friends, family and subjects (according to her daughters, she's a hugger). But she is also deeply affected by past tragedies and mistakes, whereupon she becomes melancholic, depressed, solemn and remorseful. She is also known to hold onto ''aeons''-long grudges which could fill her with immense bitterness and rage against those who had wronged her.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Experienced one when she realized her bitterness and hatred over The Fall turned her into such a cruel and vindictive matriarch she drove her own Scions against her and nearly destroyed her Court, her family and her mortal subjects/children in a bloody Civil War. It took an Armor-Piercing Response from her last (known) remaining rebellious daughter for it to trigger, but afterwards she would make amends and eventually return to being the loving and benevolent person she once was.
    • She eventually comes to have this over how much damage her Fatal Flaw of Wrath has allowed her to do, especially to her Zeroth Spawn children, and attempts to rectify it.
  • One-Winged Angel: Her current form is her original changeling form, but ages-worth of bio- and magical-modification in preparation for her revenge against Discord meant it's but a disguise to her true form - something immensely powerful and horrible. She eventually reveals it during the War Against Order, showing it's an Ursa Major-sized insectoid abomination covered in eyes.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Blackrose's mane and tail are a light shade of pink, and she's a benevolent and motherly Changeling Empress. She wasn't always like that, however - before the First-Spawn Rebellion, she became as tyrannical, bitter, and ruthless as Emperor Blackthorn over the Fall and everything afterwards, and during the Rebellion dealt with her rebellious daughters without an inch of remorse. When she finally got to ask one of her dying daughters why they rebelled, her daughter replied "Because we love you." This caused Blackrose to finally realize what she had become, so she vowed never to repeat it again.
  • That Man Is Dead: Inverted: when she finally accepts that she and Blackthorn have been refusing to address the trauma and events that lead to the creation of the Changelings in the first place and grow from them, she goes back to her original name: Rosedust. She then states it was Blackrose that was the false identity she was using to hide from her past and the pain associated with it.
  • The Older Immortal: While all Changeling Royals are immortal, she's one of the original two Changelings and thus considerably older than all of them. As pointed out by her creator, the fact the Hearts and Hooves Day legend depicts her as an Alicorn means she was already a demi-goddess or full fledged goddess before she became a Changeling Goddess, meaning she's even older than Blackthorn, potentially by a massive margin if she's G1 Rosedust.
  • Time Abyss: Existed since the dawn of Changelingkind and co-created them. She's magnitudes older (and more powerful) than even her own daughters, who are ageless demigods with lifespans measured up to millennia.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: By default, this is the case a lot of the time, as she's a very large goddess even bigger than Chrysalis, so most of her mates would be considerably smaller. Played to a larger extent when it's revealed she's had relationships with a leprechaun king and a Breezie, though shape and size shifting was involved.
  • Trauma Conga Line: It's implied the Fall, the Burning of Amorea, and the First Spawn Rebellion all happened in a very short space of time, at least from a divine perspective. To say it messed her up is an understatement.
  • Troubled Sympathetic Bigot: She's racist against dragons and has discriminated against them in the past. Given the Burning of Amorea, she has her reasons she ended up this way. She eventually recognizes this as a problem and let's go of her hatred, forgiving the dragons.
  • Was Once a Man: She used to be the Hearts and Hooves Day Princess before becoming what she is now.
  • What Have I Become?:
    • Immensely regretted letting her bitterness and rage over the Fall that created her and her people to twist her into a cruel tyrant and terrible mother initially, which eventually drove her earliest Scions to rise up against her and caused a devastating civil war, one that nearly destroyed her family and the Spring Court as a whole.
    • She eventually realizes she never actually got all the way over it and is not happy with herself for remaining a bitter, vindictive goddess for as long as she has, and moves to fix it.
  • Wham Line: Gives a series of these to Blackthorn in a canonized drabble, all of which signal Nothing Is the Same Anymore. The biggest, however, comes at the end:
Empress Blackrose: Blackrose was a mask I have worn for far too long. A mask to run away from what happened. A mask to hide from the past instead of facing it. It is not Blackrose anymore...

  • Wham Shot: Upon hearing about the news of Star Flower, a living Flutter Pony returning to Equus as she escaped her kind's extinction due to being lost in space during the Second Age when it happened. She shuts herself in her own room, and then...
Mom... are you okay?" asked Puck, looking to Blackrose.

The Changeling Empress looked at the picture of Star Flower, a few tears welling up in her eyes. "I'm...I'm fine...please leave me..."

Once she was alone, Blackrose walked over to a mirror and shapeshifted, transforming into a Flutter Pony herself... but not Star Flower.

In a rare moment, the Mother of All Changelings broke down crying as she looked into the eyes of the mare she once was.
  • World's Strongest Man: She's the most powerful female changeling alive. She might actually be the most powerful Changeling period, as she was already a goddess when she became a Changeling, and if she is the original Rosedust, likely was one since the First Age, while Blackthorn was only a mortal at the time.

    Puck Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"You're all welcome in Mother's house, but break the rules and you're gonna have a bad time."

Puck (his entry here) is Empress Blackrose's First-Spawn son, making him one of the oldest Royal Changelings in Avalon, as well as extremely powerful among all Changelingkind. While he often appears to be an unassuming Common Changeling, he plays an important role in his mother's kingdom, handling things that even most of Blackrose's beloved daughters wouldn't be trusted with.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Is a good-natured, happy-go-lucky prankster, but there's very good reason few in any Court trifle with him. On top of being a demigod, he's also one of the most experienced Changelings on Equus.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Much like his sister, Queen Pentatomidae, he also called out his mother for cruelly punishing Queen Acherontia out of racial hatred towards her dragon husband.
  • Cool Big Bro: Owing to his status as one of Blackrose's eldest children, he's this to many of his later Changeling Queen sisters, many of whom looked up to him. That being said, he still enjoys teasing/embarrassing them every now and then like any older brother, and won't hesitate to pull a mean prank on them if he saw them making a transgression, like bullying one of their younger sisters.
    • Most observable with Changeling Queen Odonata, giving her encouragement and emotional support when her younger self was suffering from racism for her heritage and directed her to use her gifts towards constructive purposes.
  • The Conscience: Loves his mother very much and is truly loyal, and thus served as this for his mother as he would not hesitate to speak up against her if he thinks she's about to make a big mistake. For example, he most certainly did not approve how his mother or his sisters handled Apterus, and told them as much that this would screw them over much later down the line - which it did.
  • Forced Transformation: He once cursed a Changeling infiltrator working for Chrysalis to have a donkey's head for the rest of the day. Whether he actually hexed them or caused their transformation abilities to short out is not known, since Puck is very tight-lipped about it.
  • The Good Chancellor: Effectively served as this to his mother, Empress Blackrose, dealing with various matters among the Spring Court as her Equerry, Representative, Caretaker of her palace and other duties. He also arranged the meeting between Princess Twilight Sparkle with his mother in one Codexverse story.
  • A Kind of One: Only known son of the Changeling Empress, the rest being her daughters and granddaughters the Changeling Queens. If there are/were more, they are yet to be seen. Regardless, Puck is her First-Spawn son. It turns out First-Spawn only means he's the first Changeling born to her after the fall. His older brother Actias is eventually revealed, but he and Rosedust haven't seen or acknowledged each other in aeons.
  • The Prankster: He's royalty by blood due to being a son of the Changeling Empress, and loves playing good-natured pranks to friends and family (and less good-natured ones to intruders and enemies).
  • Semi-Divine: His unassuming Common Changeling form often makes people forget he is, in fact, a Changeling demigod who's the son of Blackrose and had all that comes with it.
  • The Prankster: As mentioned, he's this, and a darn good one. No one has yet to figure out how he pulled off some of his most spectacular pranks, like turning an infiltrator's head into a donkey's for a day, or swapping the weapons of the Changeling Queens and Kings for candy during their conferences.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: He's really the most beloved son of Empress Blackrose and her most trustworthy helper in the Spring Court. But because his appearance is that of an unassuming Changeling drone and not a Royal Changeling as befitting his station, many Changelings overlook him.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: From what had been implied, he could not bring himself to participate on either side of the First-Spawn Rebellion and ducked out the entire event rather than fight against his mother or his rebelling sisters, returning to his mother's side only after it was over.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Implied. The fact that he looks like a normal Changeling drone means that his Empress mother, as well as his many sisters, tower over him due to being Royal Changelings.
  • Time Abyss: Is Blackrose' First-Spawn son. He's been around for a very long time. Even the fact that he has an older brother, Actias, doesn't change this as he's still the third oldest male Changeling alive.
  • Undying Loyalty: In a realistic sense. While he's deeply devoted toss his mother, the Changeling Empress, this does not mean that he's blindly obedient - rather, he serves as The Conscience for Blackrose, advising Blackrose on her decisions and calling her out when he thinks she's made a grave error.

Hive Cicada

A Changeling hive known for its members' preference for crazy partying.
    General
  • Beware the Silly Ones: All members, especially their Queen, are known for being party-people. But that doesn't mean they're entirely weak for it.
  • Long Game: Its members are known to play this, owing to Queen Cicada being among the most patient Queens of the Spring Court, willing to bid her time and wait as long as it takes to strike back at her enemies.

    Queen Cicada Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"You try spending seventeen years resting. You'll want to stretch your legs when you get out too."

Queen Cicada Avalon (her entry here) is one of the Changeling Queens of the Spring Court. Cicada Avalon and her Hive is unusual in that they spent 17 years sleeping, feeding on ambient love, followed by 1 year of awakened activity during which they would party like there's no tomorrow. While this led to a reputation of them being 'lazy', Queen Cicada and her Hive are not to be underestimated.
  • Awakening the Sleeping Giant: Due to being a Royal Changeling Queen who's known for being a party girl and a long sleeper, incurring her wrath is considered to be a great death wish.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Sleeps a lot and parties when she doesn't, but if someone threatens her Hive, she will rise to its defense. She had been compared to a sleepy bear in this regard.
  • Commonality Connection: She and Peinture became friends over being similarly patient and taking time to do things, even though what they specialize in (parties and painting, respectively) are completely different. Naturally, it led to them falling in love and dating each other.
  • Life of the Party: Cicada is this among the Changeling Queens, though that only happens every 17 years.
  • Long Game: Queen Cicada is infamous for being among the most patient Queens of the Spring Court, willing to bid her time and wait as long as it takes to strike back at her enemies. Her people have notably picked up on this trait.
  • Super-Scream: Has a sonic weapon in the form of a sonic scream. Her hive also specializes in sonic weapons. Used to devastating effect during the final battle of the Crucible Crisis against one of Toxikon's dragon lieutenants

Hive Pentatomidae

A Changeling hive that's ruled by Queen Pentatomidae Avalon. They have a very infamous reputation of being literal stinkbugs, which was due to royal decree that no one should never have to take baths.
    General
  • Nature Spirit: All members pretend to be benevolent guardian spirits or deities of the swamp they are located in who protects and guides people travelling/living within from harm. It's noted to be not entirely untrue, however given Queen Pentatomidae's Semi-Divine heritage.
  • The Navigator: All members has perfect memory and recall of their swampland's entire layout and almost never gets lost in there.
  • The Pig-Pen: The entire hive only bathes if absolutely necessary, and thus are this. As a result they smell so bad that they can knock an unprepared pony out.

    Queen Pentatomidae Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"I'm a queen, I don't have to take a bath if I don't want to."

Queen Pentatomidae Avalon (her entry here) is a benevolent Spring Changeling Queen and one of the more unusual members.

Born from a union between Blackrose with a Zebra witch-doctor, Queen Pentatomidae Avalon detested bath-times when she was a child and declared that when she became Queen, she wouldn't make her subjects take baths. She kept her Word, and because of this she and her Hive has become the literal 'stinkbugs' of the Spring Court, with a stench that could knock out the unprepared. Yet Queen Pentatomidae and her subjects are still kind and benevolent, acting as 'guardian spirits' of the swamp they made their home that guides and protects those travelling through or living there, as well as helping people with their knowledge of potion-making and alchemy (Feeding on their love and gratitude in the process).
  • Affectionate Nickname: Blackrose tends to call her her "little stinkbug".
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Queen Pentatomidae called out her mother and her siblings for their treatment of Acherontia and Vulcan, and it's noted it was 500 years before she and Blackrose would even speak following it. When the pair's hybrid daughter returned for revenge, she made it no secret her family had no one to blame for it but themselves.
  • Fantastic Racism: Notably subverted in that Pentatomidae is one of the very few Changeling Royals to not have this against the dragons. Part of this is due to her close relationship with her sister Acherontia, who never judged her preferences when it came to bathing and ultimately ended up marrying a dragon; as well as being part Zebra herself.
  • The Gadfly: She enjoys seeing people's reactions to her stink, rather than being insulted by them.
  • Hates Baths: As mentioned above, Pentatomidae loathed baths. One of her royal decrees after becoming queen of her Hive is that she wouldn't make her subjects bathe. This caused her Hive to become very stinky.
  • I Gave My Word: She wasn't kidding when she decreed that her subjects would never have to take baths.
  • Nature Spirit: All members pretend to be benevolent guardian spirits or deities of the swamp they are located in who protects and guides people travelling/living within from harm. It's noted to be not entirely untrue, however given Pentatomidae's Semi-Divine heritage.
  • The Navigator: Hive Pentatomidae has perfect memory and recall of their swampland's entire layout and almost never gets lost in there. Pentatomidae herself is no exception.
  • The Pig-Pen: The entire hive only bathes if absolutely necessary, and thus are this. As a result they smell so bad that they can knock an unprepared pony out. Even Moufette, Top God of the Skunk pantheon, couldn't stand to be around her, which is saying something.
  • Odd Friendship: Queen Pentatomidae has one with Munditia, the Goddess of Hygiene. The latter tolerates her since she does take care to follow other methods of hygiene (brushing teeth, making sure their food is clean, etc.), but still wishes she and her hive would take baths so she wouldn't put clothespins on her nose so often.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: She's generally a nice and fun individual, but openly called out her siblings and mother for their actions against Acherontia and Vulcan, and wouldn't speak to them for 500 years.
  • Please Spare Him, My Liege!: Pentatomidae begged her family to spare Acherontia's family, but sadly, they didn't listen. They would come to regret this, as Acherontia's hybrid daughter Apterus would return many years later on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge to dish out karma for what the Spring Court had done to her parents. As Laser-Guided Karma, Pentatomidae would avoid her family, especially her mother, for 500 years.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: In order to avoid taking baths, she made a royal decree that she wouldn't make her own hive take baths. Given Changelingkind's emphasis on I Gave My Word, she was successful, resulting in a very stinky Hive.
  • Silent Treatment: After calling out her family for their treatment of Acherontia, her lover Vulcan, and their hybrid daughter Apterus, Pentatomidae pointedly continued to express her displeasure by avoiding her relatives for 500 years.
  • Stink Bomb: In addition to helping and healing people with their potions and alchemy, Pentatomidae likes making stink-bombs to fight enemies or simply to prank her siblings.

Hive Hōnetto

A Neighponese Changeling hive that's based in Yattsumoshima (better known as Neighpon).
    General

    Queen Supia Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"It's quite hard to find royal quarters when one IS the size of a castle."

Queen Supia (her entry here) is one of the more unusual Queens of the Spring Court in that she looked like a cross between a Changeling Queen and a giant hornet, and size of a skyscraper. Her father, a Neighponese shogun with an unhealthy obsession of Neighpon's kaiju, made a deal with a Daiyokai to imbue a kaiju's size and power to his newborn child - unaware that his consort was Empress Blackrose during one of her sojourns from the Spring Court. Needless to say, when Supia was born, she grew up to become a kaiju herself, and has heroically defended her Hive and Neighpon ever since.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Her shogun father, Uma Akuno, was responsible for her 'condition' and then became increasingly tyrannical down the line. One of her first heroic acts was helping with his overthrow...by eating him.
  • Eating the Enemy: Fond of this, being a Giant and a Kaiju, up to and including her own father, though he was apparently becoming a deranged tyrant at the time of his death.
  • Fantastic Racism: Averted. Unlike the other royal giants, Supia is very humble and respectful of those vastly smaller than her, and isn't fond of using the racial slur "Tinies". It only indicates a superiority complex that's common among her peers.
  • Friend to All Children: During a diplomatic meeting in Ponyville between the League of Royal Giants and the Equestrian royalty, Supia has taken to giving several foals piggy-back rides (which isn't an issue, since she's so large), and letting them slide down her carapace.
  • Genius Bruiser: As expected of a Royal Changeling, she is a capable tactician/strategist on top of her strength and size. Has her Hive's armed forces prepare the battleground ahead of her fight with an approaching resurrected piece of Orochi and used a combination of cunning and skill to fight the Fifth Demon King. She and her Hive's forces managed to last a full day against it, giving Hive's civilians time to evacuate and delaying the Fifth Demon King long enough for her fellow Kaiju allies to arrive.
  • Gentle Giant: A literal Changeling giant thanks to being a hybrid daughter of a divine Changeling Empress. Fortunately, she's very nice... until someone manages to provoke her wrath.
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: She's tall as a skyscraper, thus allowing her to smash her enemies with her hooves alone.
  • Good Is Not Soft: She's benevolent, but won't hesitate to pummel evil kaijus and stomp/eat any threat to Neighpon and her subjects.
  • Kaiju: Counted among the heroic Kaijus that protects Neighpon, protecting the land from many evil and dangerous Kaiju as well as non-Kaiju threats. This is because she's a daughter of Empress Blackrose, which granted her many physical Kaiju-like properties Her daughters are also this.
  • Lady of War: As befitting someone who hails from the My Little Pony equivalent of Japan, Supia is graceful, polite, and kind to everyone she meets, and addresses people with Neighponiese honorifics (such as "Ojo-Twilight"). She can be also quite menacing to those who threaten her home country and those who practice evil in general.
  • Large and in Charge: Exaggerated. Even among Royal Changelings, who tend to be larger than Common Changelings, Supia is gigantic by her people's standards, being as tall as a skyscraper.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Unlike her father, a shogun who became increasingly deranged and tyrannical as he got older, Supia became a benevolent ruler and protector of Neighpon, serving as one of the guardian Kaijus due to her size and unique heritage.
  • Nice Guy: Gender-inverted Described as a kind, fair and enthusiastic individual, and a noble kaiju who protected Neighpon over the centuries. A scene-insert mentioned her giving piggy-back rides to children during a diplomatic visit to Ponyville. That being said, she's far from soft.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, she once tripped and flattened a whole castle by accident. She's somewhat embarrassed about this.
  • Our Giants Are Bigger: Is size of a skyscraper and has personality and instincts that came with it. A member of the League of Royal Giants, a club/association of Giant royalties and leaders. A scene-insert depicts them giving a diplomatic-visit to Ponyville.
  • Patricide: Consumed her own father, though he had it coming.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's around 2,000 years old, being around since Fourth Age Neighpon's equivalent of the Heian Period.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: As noted, she is counted among the guardians of Neighpon and periodically pummels evil kaijus and monsters. Confronted the Fifth Demon King head-on during the 'Orochi Crisis' when it was about to threaten her Hive, even though she knows she's outclassed by it. The same goes with her daughters, who helped her out during said battle, despite her explicit orders not to participate. She also defeated and sealed fellow (but far, far more malevolent) Kaiju Changeling Royal King Diversus away in ancient times, then assisted Gamarea, Battryu, and Mothryu into defeating him when he returned and performed a Fusion Dance with the Sixth Demon King to become Demon King Dynastinae.
  • Worthy Opponent: Grudgingly respects the Diamond Dogs of the Dollogae Kingdom, who once managed to stonewall her attempts at conquest with a fleet of Turtle Ships commanded by an Admiral Yip. They even managed to land a salvo of cannon-fire upon her buggy backside.

Hive Chiron

A Changeling hive that specializes in mind magic. It is ruled by Queen Ganglia Tauren-Avalon, one of the smartest and most powerful Changeling Queens of her generation.
    General
  • Mage Species: Hive Chiron has a special caste of Changelings called "Mind-Witches", which specialize in wielding Psychic Powers (particularly Telepathy). They were originally created for memory/information retrieval and espionage purposes, but over time they became therapists, teachers, and mind-healers in addition to that.
  • Meaningful Name: Hive Chiron takes its name from the centaur Chiron, who in Greek mythology is a wise being with great knowlege in medicine. Hive Chiron lives up to its name by being a place of higher learning and mind-magics. In-Universe, it is speculated that Ganglia met the real Chiron sometime before her Errance, later inspiring her to name her Hive after him.
  • Non-Indicative Name: The Mind-Witches, despite their name, includes male and female Changelings who specialize in Psychic Powers. This is because Changeling society is generally pragmatic and doesn't believe in letting gender affect talent and merit.
  • Psychic Powers: Hive Chiron specializes in mind-magics, as does its founder and ruler, Queen Ganglia. Serving Ganglia is a special caste of Changeling "Mind-Witches", originally created for memory/information retrieval and espionage purposes. However, over time they became therapists, teachers, and mind-healers in addition to that.

    Queen Ganglia Tauren-Avalon, the Mind-Witch

Classification: Ethereal/Ascendant

Portfolio: Mind, Knowledge, Science, Enlightenment

Rank: Divine (???; believed to be Tier II/Lesser or Tier III/Intermediate)

Affiliation: Spring Court (main), Pramanthan Pantheon, Serenum Pueri

"Through learning, we enrich our minds with knowledge. Through enlightenment, we acknowledge our past mistakes and become better for it."

Queen Ganglia Tauren-Avalon (her old entry here; her new entry here) is the Alicorn-Changeling hybrid goddess of Mind, Knowledge, Science, and Enlightenment, and is one of the most intelligent and psychically-capable Changeling Queens of her generation.
  • Abstract Apotheosis:
    • She achieved her "Errance" and transformed into a Royal Changeling demigoddess of Mind, Knowledge, and Science after learning of her true heritage from her mother, Blackrose, and vowing to use this information for good.
    • Much later, after receiving considerable amounts of therapy and working hard to become a better person, she would finally talk to Blackrose after many years of estrangement and genuinely forgive her mother for her sins. This not only broke her racial curse, but also allowed her to Ascend to true godhood as an "Imago" Alicorn-Changeling goddess and gain the domain of Enlightenment. As this feat was considered to be impossible to achieve even by Royal Changelings, she kept it a secret until the public emergence of her oldest siblings, the Zeroth Spawns, which further upended the status quo once it finally got out.
  • The Ace: She is not only one of the most powerful Changeling psychics of her generation, but she's also the most intelligent and capable Changeling Queens of her generation, being a skilled psychologist and neuroscientist in addition to ruling her own Hive. Said Hive, Hive Chiron, also serves as an academic center for everyone to come and learn about various subjects, including how to use Psychic Powers. She was also a capable spellcaster, having learned under the Tauren priesthoods of Ilios and Thelgossa, among others. However, it was deconstructed; in her early life, the Old Orosian Pantheon's pettiness and the loss of her birth father's kingdom left her vulnerable to Changelingkind's worst flaws, causing her to act like them. With help, she gradually realizes how she and her people acted was wrong, pushing her to be better. Her efforts eventually pay off when she Ascends to true godhood and breaks her racial curse by forgiving her mother, whom she previously hated, for her sins. Now enlightened, she seeks to not only spread knowledge and learning to all races, but also help improve Changeling society/culture so her people could become better like she did.
  • Always Someone Better: Despite her relatively young age as a member of the Seventy-Eighth Spawn, she surpassed many of even her older Royal Changeling half-sisters by virtue of being an academic, magical, and psychic prodigy, causing them to resent her to the point of attempting (and failing) to sabotage her. Then it's discovered she Ascended to true godhood and broke the racial curse on herself, once believed to be impossible for even Royal Changelings, by genuinely forgiving her mother. The revelation caused some of her more villainous, reactionary, and/or bigoted half-sisters to try kill her outright.
  • Animal Motifs: Butterflies. Butterflies symbolize change, transformation, and rebirth, though in certain coutnries like Greece, they are interpreted as souls of the dead. Ganglia is an Alicorn-Royal Changeling hybrid with Swallowtail butterfly wings; though they were tattered in her "sub-imago" form, they become full and shimmering wings once she Ascends to true godhood as an "Imago" royal Changeling. Much of her character arc involves letting go of her grudges and traumas, and changing her toxic beliefs into positive, openminded ones. She also desires to improve Changeling society, doing away with its more harmful aspects and helping her people overcome their grudges so they can finally grow as a race. This is further shown with her domain of Enlightenment, which she gained by genuinely forgiving her mother, Blackrose, for her sins.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: She's an Alicorn-Changeling hybrid goddess who embodies Mind, Knowledge, Science, and Enlightenment.
  • Benevolent Mage Ruler: While all Changeling Queens are capable of great magical feats of various kinds by virtue of being Royal Changelings, she is acknowledged as one of the most powerful and most talented Changeling psychics of her generation even by her kind's standards. She is also the kind, intelligent Queen and founder of her own Hive, Hive Chiron, which is part of the Spring Court and presently located in the Tauren Peninsula, the place of her birth.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Despite her stoic, logical, and composed demeanor, she is among the kindest and most benevolent Changeling Queens, in her case desiring to help people learn and build environments that encourage them to do so. And thanks to people like the Redeeming Six and Blue Suede Heartstrings, she sees all life as precious, but also sees death as a beneficial change that prevents stagnation and brings new life. She specifically designed Hive Chiron to be a place of both academic learning and psychological healing for all races, both Changeling and non-Changeling. However, she despises all forms of ignorance and bigotry, having been a victim of both, and since her second Ascension, she has become openly critical of her people's worst flaws and actions. She is also one of the most intelligent and psychically-capable Changeling Queens of her generation, and as her detractors learned the hard way, many attempts to sabotage or kill her ended badly because she was that smart.
  • Beyond the Impossible: By genuinely forgiving her mother, Empress Blackrose, for her sins, she not only Ascends to true godhood, but also breaks her racial curse as King Thorax had done before her, turning her into an "Imago" Royal Changeling. As these feats were considered by her people to be impossible, she kept her status a secret for many years, barring trusted individuals like the Redeeming Six until the public emergence of the Zeroth Spawns, her oldest siblings. Naturally, the truth of what happened to her caused further upheaval among the Changelings once it finally got out, with some of her more villainous, bigoted, and reactionary half-sisters trying to kill her out of sheer jealousy.
  • Blue Is Heroic: Part of her mane and tail is colored indigo-blue, and she's one of the more benevolent and kinder Changeling Queens who, through a series of events, comes to realize a lot of things wrong with herself, her people, and Changeling society overall, pushing her to become a better person. Her efforts in doing so eventually allow her to Ascend to true godhood as an "Imago", something long considered to be impossible even by other Royal Changelings, and break the racial curse upon herself.
  • Boomerang Bigot: After discovering the worst secrets and sins of Changelingkind, especially those of her mother's, she developed a deep hatred for both her people and her family by the time she meets the Redeeming Six, seeing them as monsters and hypocrites who deserved to be punished for their crimes. However, it's deconstructed; while the Redeeming Six did understand where she was coming from and helped her with her trauma, they still showed her that such attitudes are still wrong as she's just enabling her kind to hurt more people. To emphasize their point, they introduce her to Blue Suede Heartstrings, who shows her all the horrors of racism that were common in the early Second Age. This influences her to try become a better person, which eventually pays off when she Ascends all the way to true godhood and breaks her racial curse by genuinely forgiving her mother.
  • Cain and Abel:
    • It's implied she was the "Cain" to her half-sister Queen Acherontia, who was the "Abel". Ganglia was racist towards Dragons and hated them for what they did to Changelingkind, whereas Acherontia fell in love with Dragon Lord Vulcan and sired the hybrid Princess Apterus with him. However, the Changelings and Dragons' actions in tearing Acherontia's family apart horrified Ganglia, setting up the circumstances that led to her realizing that her Fantastic Racism attitudes were wrong. She later apologizes to Acherontia for her racism, factoring into her Ascension to true godhood.
    • She herself would become the "Abel" to her more villainous, bigoted, ambitious, and/or reactionary sisters, who served as her "Cain". While they already resented Ganglia for being The Ace and The Archmage among them due to coveting the favor of their mother, Empress Blackrose, their resentment increased when Ganglia revealed that she Ascended to true godhood and broke her racial curse, further upending the status quo. It got to a point where Ganglia's sisters tried killing her, though fortunately, they never succeeded.
  • Calling the Old Man Out:
    • She was horrified by what was done to Queen Acherontia's family and Empress Blackrose's role in it, and got into a heated argument with her mother over it. Learning of her mother's darkest secrets, such as her monstrous abuse of her older children, inflicted a case of Broken Pedestal so bad that she ran away from the Spring Court and developed a grudge against her mother for being a Hypocrite.
    • She eventually does it again many years later, after receiving much therapy and improving herself as a person. While she does talk with Empress Blackrose and genuinely forgives her, she makes it clear that Blackrose needs to improve herself if she wants to earn her daughters' trust again and be the loving mother she wanted to be. This allows her to Ascend to true godhood and break her racial Horror Hunger curse, as she let go of her grudge against her mother.
  • Child Prodigy: Prior to her "Errance", even as a young filly, she was an intellectual and magical prodigy, studying among royalty, politicians, theocrats, writers, and scientists alike. However, it's in Psychic Powers (specifically mind-reading), psychology, and neurosciences where she truly shined. Eventually, she proved herself competent enough to serve as an active member of her birth father's court despite her young age.
  • Daddy's Girl: While she loved both of her parents, she was closer to her birth father; she not only inherited her intelligence from him, but also idolized her birth father and wanted to make him proud. Outliving her father due to being her species' agelessness naturally upset her, but she decided to honor his memory by being The High Queen when she inherited his throne. Part of her trauma over her wrongful banishment — and the actions she took in the centuries that came after — came from how her father's kingdom fell as a direct result of her absence, causing her to feel that she "failed" her father. However, the knowledge that her father would certainly disapprove of her actions is what partially motivated her to become a better person. Thanks to the Redeeming Six, she received therapy for her trauma and later accepted Sunny Field Vaughoof's offer to adopt her as his daughter, but she never forgot her birth father and continued honoring him.
  • Defector from Decadence: Previously, she was an ardent supporter of Changelingkind, believing all the horrible things she did were justified and necessary for her people's survival. Thanks to people like the Redeeming Six and Blue Suede Heartstrings, she comes to realize that not only her actions and attitudes were immoral, but also the Changelings had stagnated and corrupted themselves by taking their obsessions with grudges, secrets, and survival too far. This in part led to her second Ascension and purification. While she ultimately chose to stay in the Spring Court, she is presently one of the most openly critical members of her kind, believing their old way of life is severely holding them back as a race, society, and culture.
  • Deity of Human Origin: She was originally a mortal Unicorn until she learned the truth about her heritage from her mother, Blackrose, after which she achieved her "Errance" and Ascended to demi-godhood as a Royal Changeling demigoddess of Mind, Knowledge, and Science. Many years later, after going through considerable amounts of character development and letting go of her grudges, including forgiving Blackrose, she Ascended to true godhood (something that was considered to be impossible by even many Royal Changelings) as an "Imago", gaining the domain of Enlightenment.
  • Divine Parentage: She's one of Blackrose's daughters through a Pony philosopher-King from one of the few successful Pony city-states in the Tauren Peninsula, making her Semi-Divine. However, she didn't become a true demigoddess until she achieved her "Errance", turning her into a Royal Changeling.
  • The Empath: As a goddess of Mind and Enlightenment, she has empathic powers on top of what she already has as a Royal Changeling.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Despite her stoic and logical exterior, she can be surprisingly dorky and excitable at times, especially when learning new things. She also admitted to developing a taste for instant ramen to the point of encouraging the creation of Changeling equivalents and passing it on to her students, both Changeling and non-Changeling. She also has a fondness for young children, including Changeling grubs.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Despite her still being racist towards Dragons at the time, she was horrified when she learned what the Changelings and Dragons both did to Acherontia and her family, as they essentially tore apart an innocent family. She had a heated argument with her mother, Blackrose, over it, and in her fury, she went looking for answers... and what she discovered would irrevocably change her life for centuries to come.
  • The Exile: Sometime after achieving her "Errance", she was wrongfully banished from the Tauren Peninsula by the Old Orosian Pantheon, many who didn't like having a Changeling in their lands or envied her for being more popular than them. Her banishment directly led to the fall of her birth father's kingdom as it grew stagnant, corrupt, and ignorant withouth her there to rule, and this left her with trauma that would affect her for years to come. Her efforts in helping to oppose traitors and Discord-worshiping cults in the Tauren Peninsula during the "War Against Chaos" caused the Old Orosian Pantheon to reluctantly reverse her banishment in grudging gratitude, if only to keep her from publicly exposing their past crimes against her.
  • Fantastic Racism: Deconstructed; much of her character arc is devoted to showing how harmful and toxic racism can be, both for the prepetrators and the victims.
    • The Old Orosian Pantheon originally banished her from the Tauren Peninsula for the "crime" of being a Royal Changeling when they learned of her true species, as well as jealousy towards her for being more popular than them. Her wrongful banishment directly led to her birth father's kingdom's eventual fall from stagnation, ignorance, and corruption without her to rule it, leaving her with trauma that would affect her for years until she met the Redeeming Six. Later, her role in the war effort againt Discord by rooting out local, chaos-aligned cults and traitors in the Tauren Peninsula would force the Old Orosian Pantheon to reverse her banishment and stay in good graces with her, knowing she could publicly reveal their mistreatment of her at any time.
    • On the other hand, she herself became racist towards all non-Changelings, especially the Dragons, due to a combination of her aforementioned trauma making her vulnerable to Changelingkind's toxic attitudes, seeing how knowledge was rejected and/or misused by others, and reading about what the Dragons had done to her people in the past. Among other things, she hoarded knowledge solely for Changelingkind's benefit and dished out Laser-Guided Amnesia towards those she deemed "unworthy" (i.e. anyone who isn't a Changeling). Learning what her people did to Queen Acherontia and her family horrified her so much that she got into a heated argument with her mother, Blackrose, over it, which led to her hating her own family and kind once she discovered secrets regarding their horrible misdeeds. Meeting the Redeeming Six, Blue Suede Heartstrings, and others caused her to realize that her racism, even if directed towards her people, is wrong, which pushed her to change herself and improve Changeling society so they can avoid this problem.
  • Fantastic Slurs: During a confrontation with one of the wicked Old Orosian Pantheon members who previously voted for her banishment out of racism and jealousy, she gets called an "annoying cockroach" by him.
  • Friend to All Children: By her own admission, she is very fond of both Changeling grubs and young children of non-Changeling races.
  • Generation Xerox: Much like her mother, Empress Blackrose, she was horribly wronged by malicious individuals who targeted her for petty reasons, leaving her traumatized for years. Her rage over being wronged led to her adopting toxic attitudes that turned her into a complete opposite of the kind, benevolent ruler she wanted to be, committing horrible actions herself while condoning the actions of her own people. An important event later shook her beliefs to the core, and thanks to people who forced her to realize the harm her mindset was causing, she pushed herself to become a better person, both for her own sake and others.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Downplayed. Discovering the deepest, darkest secrets of her people, including numerous atrocities done in the name of survival and Empress Blackrose's monstrous abuse of her older children, horrified her so much that she ran away from the Spring Court in tears. The secrets also left her with a burning hatred of both her people and her mother, seeing both as monsters and hypocrites who deserved to be punished for their crimes.
  • Heavenly Blue: Part of her mane and tail is colored indigo-blue, and she not only is a daughter of Empress Blackrose, a Changeling goddess, but she herself became a Royal Changeling demigoddess after achieving her "Errance" by vowing to use the knowledge of her true heritage for good. Centuries later, she Ascended to true godhood by letting go of her toxic attitudes and genuinely forgiving her mother for her sins, making her more powerful than even her older Royal Changeling half-sisters.
  • The High Queen: Upon establishing Hive Chiron and becoming its Queen, she turned Hive Chiron into a place of higher education, whether in academics or in mind-magics. As her entry quote indicates, she strongly believes in the value of knowledge, and thus opposes ignorance of all kinds.
  • Hybrid Power: As an Alicorn-Changeling hybrid, she possesses both the combined magics of all Pony tribes and Changelingkind's racial shapeshifting and illusion-based powers. Ascending all the way to true godhood and breaking the racial curse on herself made her racial powers even stronger.
  • Interspecies Adoption: With her mother's blessings, she became adopted by Sunny Field Vaughoof, a Pony, after Ascending as a full-fledged Alicorn/Changeling goddess, having been the closest to him of the Redeeming Six. This made her a member of Sunny Field's children, the Serenum Pueri. Despite this, she never forgot her beloved birth father and continued honoring his memory.
  • Large and in Charge: Due to having been a demigoddess for centuries, when she Ascended to true godhood, she became larger than many of her demi-divine half-sisters (barring those with Giant heritage) because she had a "head-start". She's also a Queen of her own Hive, as well as her birth father's kingdom before the Old Orosian Pantheon's racist meddling caused its fall.
  • Magic Hair: Both her mane and tail are composed of Mind energy.
  • The Magnificent: Known as "the Mind-Witch", due to being one of the most powerful and skilled telepaths of her generation, as well as being the creator of the "Mind-Witch" caste of Changelings.
  • Master of Illusion: As a Royal Changeling, her racial powers include the ablity to cast illusions, which is further enhanced by her purification, full-fledged divinity, and domain of Mind. Ironically, her domain of Enlightenment allows her to see through and neutralize illusions as well.
  • Metamorphosis: This happens to her twice.
  • Meaningful Name: Twofold. Her name refers to a ganglion, a group of neuron cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system. Ganglia is a Changeling Queen who specializes in both Psychic Powers — especially Telepathy — and "soft" sciences like psychology and neuroscience. Her being named after a body part rather than an insect also sets her apart from her family, as she is both one of the smartest Royal Changelings alive and one of few Queens in the Changeling Court who strongly disagrees with her people's racism and obsession with survival.
    • She was originally a Unicorn mare, but when she learned her mother's true identity and that she was born a Pony-Changeling hybrid, she vowed to use this knkowledge for good. This allowed her to come into her Errance and transform/Ascend as a Royal Changeling, albeit a "subadult/subimago" one with leg holes, tattered wings, and darker exoskeleton.
    • After receiving considerable amounts of therapy and learning to forgive those who wronged her, including her own mother, she broke her racial hunger curse on herself and Ascended to true godhood. In the process, she turned into a "Imago" Royal Changeling, a stronger and more powerful version of non-purified Royal Changelings. This is shown in her appearance's bright colors, full wings, and the complete absence of leg holes.
  • Mind over Matter: AS a goddess of Mind and Enlightenment, she has psychic telekinesis.
  • Mortality Phobia: Possibly due to her birth father's kingdom crumbling in her absence after her wrongful banishment, she developed a fear of death and the prospect of dying, believing all her work and knowledge would ultimately come to nothing. Thankfully, she received therapy and support for this.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Deconstructed. Her good deeds as a Queen of both her birth father's kingdom and Hive Chiron ultimately meant nothing to the Old Orosian Pantheon, whose members voted to have her banished from the Tauren Peninsula out of racism and jealousy towards her popularity. Her banishment directly led to her birth father's kingdom crumbling in her absence, leaving her traumatized and vulnerable to being influenced by Changelingkind's worst flaws. It was after learning of Changelingkind's darkest secrets (including her own mother's worst sins) and meeting the Redeeming Six that she realizes her grudges and anger were turning her into someone her father would not approve of, motivating her to change for the better. While she did later help defeat the Old Orosian Pantheon, she only did so to stop them from hurting others, as she learned firsthand how poisonous grudges can be.
  • No-Sell: As a goddess of Mind and Enlightenment, she is immune, or at least incredibly resistant to mind-manipulation and brainwashing spells.
  • Oppose What You Suffered: She despises ignorance and bigotry as well as those who spread them, because she herself was a victim of both and had witnessed how others rejected and/or misused knowledge. This made her a staunch enemy of traditionalists, racial/tribal supremacist groups and others who want to keep others prejudiced and foolish. This later fueled her desire to help improve Changeling society/culture — her people had become so obsessed with survival that they themselves became racist, ignorant, and corrupt like the Old Orosian Pantheon who screwed her over for being a Changeling.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Had Ganglia not impulsively gone off searching for answers in anger towards her mother, Empress Blackrose, for what was done to Queen Acherontia's family, she would not have discovered the deepest, darkest secrets of Changelingkind that Blackrose kept from even her own daughters. It's that choice that led to her tearfully running away from the Spring Court and meeting the Redeeming Six, setting up her character development.
    • In-Universe, Ganglia believes that had she chosen to defy the Old Orosian Pantheon and their attempts to banish her from the Tauren Peninsula, her birth father's kingdom would not have fallen from stagnancy, ignorance, and corruption because she would be there to continue ruling it.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Even before inheriting her father's throne and becoming Queen (as well as a Changeling Queen of her own Hive), her academic and magical prowess were so great that she became an active member of her father's court while still young.
  • Psychic Teleportation: As a goddess of Mind and Enlightenment, she possesses psychic teleportation.
  • Psychic Powers: As a goddess of Mind, she possesses various psychic abilities like telepathy, psychic telekinesis, clairvoyance, and empathy, among others, and her domain of Enlightenment enhanced them further. Even before becoming a Royal Changeling, she was one of the most prodigious telepaths of her generation, and is capable of things like casting telepathic illusions and shields, manifesting/manipulating one's thoughts and memories, projecting a telepathic aura to either drain psychic energy or fight with as a physical force, and performing telepathic healing. Her great feats as a telepath and psychic — including her creation of the Changeling "Mind-Witches — led to her being named "the Mind-Witch", and it is believed that not even deities will be able to shield themselves from her telepathic might.
  • The Runaway: After discovering the deepest, darkest secrets of what her people and her mother did to others in the past, she tearfully ran away from the Spring Court, unable to handle such revelations. Fortunately, this led to her meeting the Redeeming Six, setting up the events that influenced her character development.
  • Seers: As a goddess of Mind and Enlightenment, she has clairvoyant abilities.
  • A Shared Suffering: Living among mortals in disguise opened her eyes to how others felt about being on the receiving end of the Changelings' activities and manipulations, including the Autumn Court Changelings, who were often persecuted by the Summer and Spring Courts for being different. This led to her aiding the Autumn Court in secret, seeing herself in them for how she was similarly treated by the Old Orosian Pantheon. After Ascending to true godhood and breaking her racial curse, she chose to stay in the Spring Court so she can help Changelingkind move away from the toxic attitudes that were causing Changelings from all Courts, including the Autumn Court, so much pain and misery.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: She admitted to developing a taste for instant ramen when it emerged in the Fourth Age, consuming numerous cups and packs of instant ramen while studying and encouraging the creation of Changeling equivalents. Many of her Changeling and non-Changeling students would develop the same habit.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As an Alicorn-Changeling hybrid, one of her racial powers involves shapeshifting. Her most preferred forms are either a Unicorn mare (her original form), an Alicorn goddess (what she could've become if she wasn't half-Changeling), or a Minotaur (one of the biggest racial groups in the Tauren Peninsula).
  • Workaholic: One of her flaws is that she has workaholic tendencies, as her thirst for knowledge is so great that it led to her obsessing over her studies at times. She has to be frequently reminded to take a break because of this.

Hive Marabunta

A Changeling hive that is rather unusual for its kind. The hive has a biological peculiarity of birthing the highest number of twin Changelings. Equally unusual is its dual rulership - the hive is ruled by Queens Mara and Bunta, who are identical twin sisters. The Changelings born in that hive feed through familial symbiosis, forming unique bonds that is akin to biological siblings.
    General
  • Angsty Surviving Twin: Subverted. Marabunta Changelings feed through symbiotic relationships that is akin to one shared between twins, even if they aren't biologically related. When one dies, the surviving "twin" replaces them with another, often with their twin Queens' consent.
  • Fusion Dance: All Changelings in Hive Marabunta can merge together to become a new being with enhanced physical capabilities and power, a la Steven Universe. While they can merge with each other, they can also merge with either one or both Queens if the situation requires it. Merged Changelings with extremely close bonds run the risk of becoming "permafusions".

Queen Mara and Bunta/Queen Marabunta Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"We are..."
"...one and the same..."

Changeling Queens Mara and Bunta (their entry here) are unusual among the Royal Changelings in that they were born identical twin sisters. While they're different from each other, personality-wise, their status as twins and their telepathic bond ensures that they're closer to each other than they are with their other family members.
  • Expy: Of Ruby and Sapphire, in that they share a close bond and can fuse into a powerful, unified entity, and that individually, Mara and Bunta are polar-opposite individuals. However, Mara and Bunta's relationship is platonic while Ruby and Sapphire's is romantic.
  • Fusion Dance: A unique ability both Mara and Bunta have - they can merge together to form Queen Marabunta, whose personality is a rounded combination of both twins, is physically taller and stronger, and has more magic/love reserves. They can also fuse with their Changeling subjects if the situation demands it.
  • Hot-Blooded: Mara is described as one in her joint profile. It's even reflected in her having red-colored magic.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Due to being identical twins, Mara and Bunta look exactly the same, except for the colors of their magic - Mara's is red, while Bunta's is blue.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: Mara is the hotblooded and energetic sister, while Bunta is stoic and composed.
  • The Stoic: Bunta is described as stoic and composed in her joint profile.
  • Twin Telepathy: Mara and Bunta are capable of psychically communicating with each other due to being born twins.

Other Spring Court members

    Queen Acanthosomastidae Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"Mighty are the pen and the sword."

Daughter of Empress Blackrose with a legendary warrior-poet, Queen Acanthosomatidae Avalon (her entry here) is also called 'The Cavalier Queen', known for both her artistic talent and martial skills. As Queen, she dedicates herself to high culture and its defense and propagation, her hive both a military stronghold and a museum/theatre/gallery, with her and her knights cultured warriors who preoccupy herself with art when not at war. Whether openly or in disguise as honourable knights or cultured warrior-aristocrats, Acanthosomatidae and her hive can be guaranteed to stand in defense of innocents and civilization from barbarism and savagery, feeding on the love of those grateful of their knights in shining armour.
  • Amazonian Beauty: Much like her sister, Queen Theraphosa, she's described as tall, beautiful, and strongly-built.
  • Fantastic Racism: Justified; she's known in her family for being rather intolerant of non-Changeling races, which stems from her deep bitterness over the Ponies casting out her father for associating with Changelings. However, it's subverted in that her father and mother's benevolent teachings left her taking a neutral stance, as despite her beliefs, she participated in many situations that had her working together with non-Changelings, such as helping Commander Bridgehead liberate territories that were taken by the Storm Empire.
  • Heroic Lineage: Her mother is a Changeling goddess and the Empress of the Spring Court. Her mortal father is a legendary Warrior Poet.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Acanthosomatidae is an honorable warrior with a keen eye for art and philosophy just like her father. However, she tends to be rather arrogant and disdainful of those who don't live up to her high standards in terms of character and achievements. She also expects those of high breeding (like herself) to act in a way that befits their station, which leaves her befuddled whenever Luminiferous acts so casual and friendly despite being the ancient Alicorn god of Perfection and Potential.
  • Warrior Poet: Her father, Minnesänger, was a legendary knight and novelist who authored many books during the Medieval era. As his daughter, Acanthosomatidae would grow up to be just like him, having been taught in the way of the pen and sword. Her subjects also consist of martial artisans, and as a result, her hive became a library of literature, plays, and art.

    Queen Ithomiini Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"Ponies love the films, darling."

Queen Ithomiini Avalon (her entry here) is a rather unusual Changeling Queen in that she isn't interested in survival, or hiding herself from the outside world like most of her family. Having been raised by her father, who was a film industry buff, Ithomiini rose to become a famous movie director with her own studio/hive, Movie Bug Studios. Her guise in the outside world is "Movie Bug".
  • Ascended Fangirl: She was a fan of movies growing up and eventually founded her own movie studio, with the help of her hive of course.
  • Benevolent Boss: While she can be somewhat egotistical and a bit of a perfectionist, she genuinely cares for her subjects, who also double as her stage crew and actors.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Ithomiini's father was a film industry buff, and instilled that love in his daughter. Years later, she would become a famous and respected movie director.
  • The Perfectionist: Ithomiini is noted to be a perfectionist, she is noted to have helped her make good movies.

    Queen Odonata Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"As our elder brother said, if there's a fire in your heart, put it to a good use."

  • Fantastic Racism: Despite Kirins being a "gray area" due to being dragon-pony combinations, Odonata was shunned, bullied, and mistreated by many of Blackthorn's sons, and even some of her more racist sisters.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: Half Changeling, half Kirin. Due to Kirin retaining some draconic traits, Odonata was bullied by some of her racist sisters until Puck, Blackrose, and her more benevolent siblings stepped in to protect her.

    Queen Theraposa Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"We must fight for those who cannot fight for themselves."

Queen Theraposa Avalon (her entry here) is an incredibly combat-oriented Changeling Queen whose sheer strength and fighting skills allow her to match the Summer Court's Changeling Kings, making her a rarity among the Changeling Queens overall.

    Queen Zoraptera Avalon/Dr./Saint Angel Wing

Court Affiliation: Spring

''"I'll be watching over you."

Queen Zoraptera, also known as Dr./Saint Angel Wing (her entry here) is an expert healer and doctor who seeks to create a universial cure for all diseases.

    Princess Metophis Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"Momma, can I sleep in your mane?"

Princess Metophis Avalon (her entry here) is one of the youngest Royal Changelings living within the Spring court.

    Queen Buprestidae Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

"Where one sees beauty, we see resplendence."

Queen Buprestidae Avalon (her entry here) is a Changeling Queen who originaed from the kingdom of Timbucktu. Chrysalis' destruction of Timbucktu and genocide of the Twinkle-Eye Ponies traumatized Buprestidae so much that she developed a near-homicidal grudge against her sister, vowing to kill Chrysalis for her crimes.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Gallows Humor in the Spring Court tells how Buprestidae would, on any given day, talk about photography, the weather, her love for her hive, and how she would gouge out the eyes of her sister Chrysalis with a cereal spoon for what she did to the Jewel-Eyed Ponies.
  • Cain and Abel: Possess mutual sororicidal animosity with her sister Chrysalis Avalon, in her case for what Chrysalis did to her father's people.
  • Eye Beams: Thanks to being the first 'Jewel Beetle Changeling', her pupils are replaced with organic-crystals which enable her not only extremely pristine vision, but also ability to channel magic through her eyes. One of the techniques she could do is firing beams of magic against targets.
  • Freak Out: She was never the same ever since her wayward sister Chrysalis Avalon destroyed Timbuckto and drove the Twinkle-Eye Ponies, her father's kind, to near-extinction.
  • I Have No Son!: Or rather, she has no sister with Chrysalis, whom she disowned for committing genocide against her father's people the Jewel-Eyed Ponies during Chrysalis' conquest of Timbuckto.
  • In-Universe Catharsis: Chrysalis' defeats and eventual exile to the Winter Court was this to her. She celebrated by piling up Chrysalis' private belongings in her fortress after she was dethroned and burning it all with an unhinged grin on her face, and then going to Chrysalis' room in Avalon Palace and wrecking everything inside with a sledgehammer she borrowed from her sister Queen Odonata, laughing maniacally all the while. And having both instances photographed and/or filmed by her siblings and subordinates for the memories.
  • Stepford Smiler: While outwardly still cheerful, deep down she is haunted by grief and consumed by monomaniacal hatred for Chrysalis.

    Queen Gonepteryx Avalon

Court Affiliation: Spring

Queen Gonepteryx Avalon (her entry here) is a Changeling Queen of the Grittish Isles, and also half leprechaun.
  • The Fair Folk: While all Changeling Royals are this, she's half leprechaun and thus has more fae traits than her sisters. While she's generally fun loving and friendly, if mischievous, it's best not to make her mad.
  • Leprechaun: She's half leprechaun, and has a number of their powers. She's also extremely short, but don't insult her about that.
