Characters / Code Geass: Paladins of Voltron, The Holy Britannian Empire

Go To

    open/close all folders
    In General
  • Apathetic Citizens: Averted - many Britannians are outraged over Charles siding with the Galra, and the narration implies the entire civilian population of Area 11 defected out of disgust.
  • Can't Catch Up: Technologically, they're nowhere near the level of the Lions. In regards to skill, though, they outclass their opponents, not that it does them any good.
  • Defector from Decadence: Several of the more sympathetic characters defect to Voltron's side when Charles invites the Galra to attack. Most of Area 11 follows suit in At Least With Sorrow.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Britannia may be The Empire, but the civilian population understandably has issues with Charles enacting a Vichy Earth scenario with the Galra. Just to name one group, the entire civilian population of Area 11 sides with the Black Knights after the SAZ Massacre.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: To some degree - Britannian is by far the most advanced faction in their home series and manages to adapt their technology and strategies fairly quickly to oppose Voltron, but they don't really compare to the Galra in terms of firepower, numbers, and general cruelty. The fight between Cornelia's forces and the Galra under Commander Corza at the SAZ just highlights this - the best Cornelia can do is inflict some external damage on a Galra cruiser via the Hadron Cannons on the Le Fey.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: While Britannia is certainly a major problem on Earth, it's nowhere near as dangerous as the Galra Empire, since it has nothing comparable to Zarkon's fleets or Haggard's Robeasts. Additionally, while we've been introduced to sympathetic Britannians who still side with their empire at first, the only sympathetic Galra seen so far are part of the Blade of Marmora. Even the alliance Charles makes with the Galra highlights this, as several members of the Royal Family (and many members of the civilian population) defect on the spot over it. By contrast, the Blade of Marmora is implied to be relatively small in size, with most Galra being subservient to Zarkon.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: They, along with Earth in general, are unaware of the existence of aliens, let alone the Galra Empire. They are all informed by Chapter 35.
  • Mook Mobile: Use Sutherland and Glasgow’s as their rank and file machine.
  • Villain Team-Up: Under Charles' direction, the Empire officially sides with the Galra in Chapter 35.
  • The Worf Effect: Britannian forces get completed destroyed whenever they face the Paladins. The one exception to this so far is during Lelouch's duel with Nonette, which required Britannia to cheat like hell. The Britannian forces who fight against the Galra fare even worse, since the Galra Empire has a much larger force than Voltron to attack them with and only a fraction of the Britannian forces actually side against the Galra.
  • Riches to Rags: Because of the Galra alliance, anything of value belonging to the Britannian Royal Family was taken away. In Chapter 44 it was revealed that Charles' once luxurious bedroom was reduced to a bed and a dresser with some simplified clothes.

The Royal Family

    Emperor Charles

Emperor Charles zi Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/7cc4ffad4132e3e6c55d6f62a2f2f78e.jpg
The Emperor of Britannia.
  • Abusive Parents: He exiled his own son for daring to question him about his reaction to the death of his Empress. Ironically, he's still a better parent than Zarkon.
  • Arc Villain: For the Earth Arc - while he is by far the most personal of Lelouch's enemies, he doesn't remotely compare the likes of Zarkon, and his plans regarding the Ragnarök Connection are nowhere near as destructive as the Galra harvesting entire worlds of Quintessence.
  • Batman Gambit: Charles has Nunnally give a speech urging Voltron to submit to Britannia, knowing Lelouch will likely throw caution to the wind to rescue her, leading him into a situation where Schneizel could easily capture him. He didn't know that Lelouch's friends would persuade the Exiled Prince to not panic and plan ahead, however, costing him his only leverage against Voltron.
  • Beyond Redemption: For his part in the SAZ Massacre (selling out Earth to the Galra, giving the aliens the go-ahead to kill all Japanese at the SAZ, allowing his men to participate in it, and declaring those who supported the SAZ traitors) effectively burns the bridge Lelouch and the Black Knights were willing to extend to him. In fact, practically the entire civilian population of Area 11 defects over this.
  • Broken Pedestal: Britannians defect in droves after he announces his alliance with the Galra.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It does not seem to occur to Charles that allying with the Galra to stall for time to complete the Ragnarök Connection might permanently sour his relationship with his followers even if said plan comes to fruition.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Unknown Knowns example - Charles' plan to force Voltron to surrender (or at least get itself into a position to be easily captured) hinged on exploiting Lelouch's Big Brother Instinct. While said plan did achieve its intended goal of luring Voltron into the open, it didn't succeed in any other way because Lelouch was willing to listen to his friends, who convinced him to plan ahead before they rescued Nunnally.
  • Foil: To Zarkon. Both are the Emperors of their respective empires, who rule with iron fists. Both also started with the noblest of intentions. However, while Charles still has those intentions in mind, Zarkon has long since devolved into being just a power-hungry tyrant. Additionally, Charles and Zarkon are both headstrong leaders, but Charles is relatively Weak-Willed in comparison. Zarkon easily cowls the former into submission via looks.
  • Godzilla Threshold: According to Naruwitch's end of chapter notes, this is why Charles became The Quisling for the Galra - Lelouch's time in space has shifted his ideals enough that the boy won't agree to assist in the Ragnarök Connection, and with Zenobia having destroyed one of the thought elevators, Charles needs to keep Lelouch distracted long enough to complete his plans, and the Galra are the only ones who can do so.
  • Hypocrite: Charles dismisses the Voltron Paladins as being only children. Haggar points out that Charles uses children to carry out his will. For further hypocrite points, this happens just after Charles and V.V. were given a status update by Rolo/Nebiros.
  • I Have Your Wife: Attempted. Charles secretly sends in teams to capture Rivalz, Milly, Shirley, and Kallen's families after the SAZ Massacre, to gain leverage over the Paladins. We only learn this when Schneizel receives a report that they failed, as the Paladins made sure to grab their families ASAP once they concluded with healing everyone they could at the SAZ.
  • It's All About Me: Charles will only do things if they are done his way. Case in point, he has Britannia enter a Villain Team-Up with the Galra solely that he might have the chance to finish the Ragnarök Connection and reunite with his loved ones, ignoring just how badly this could backfire if worse comes to worst.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Him announcing Britannia's alliance with the Galra to the entire Earth not only gives the Black Knights tons of support, even from Britannian citizens, but it also completely destroys Cornelia and Schneizel's faith in him. Cornelia defects on the spot, while Schneizel has to be forcibly kept compliant via Corza having him directly under her watch. As Cornelia was able to outsmart and outfight Lelouch several times in canon, while Schneizel consistently put Lelouch on the ropes every time they fought, this means that Charles lost his best weapons against Lelouch significantly earlier than in canon, ironically making his alliance with the Galra the only thing keeping Britannia floating.
  • Offing the Offspring: Gives Nebiros the go-ahead to assassinate Euphemia. V.V. secretly modified the order so that Nunnally would also be targeted.
  • The Quisling: Is apparently trying to invoke this, actually inviting the Galra to invade Earth with Britannia's support. That being said, it's strongly implied that Hagar strong-armed him and V.V. into doing so. Naruwitch's end of chapter notes for At Least With Sorrow also revealed that he's using the alliance to stall for time to finish the Ragnarök Connection, believing that Zarkon won't be able to hurt him or any other humans once that plan reaches fruition.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Elements of this are present to his plan to capture Zero - if it works, then he has the Paladins and Voltron in his pocket, but if it fails then, even in the worst-case scenario, he will still have confirmed that Lelouch is part of Voltron. The plan ends up falling apart, though, as Lelouch revealed his identity to the Black Knights prior to rescuing Nunnally, depriving him of a valuable piece of leverage against Lelouch.

    Empress Marianne

Empress Marianne vi Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9180_735971660.jpg
Lelouch and Nunnally's mother, and the Empress of Britannia.
  • Abusive Parents: She spent seven years Faking the Dead, yet never once checked on her children. Though this is Downplayed slightly compared to canon, as the first thing she does when she re-establishes her link with C.C. is ask the latter how Lelouch is doing. She still manages to be a better mother than Haggar.
  • Body Surf: Her mind and soul live in the body of Anya Alstreim, causing the latter to have periodic memory blackouts whenever Marianne takes control.
  • Composite Character: Inherits Keith's backstory from Legendary Defender.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She's genuinely surprised when the Paladins leave Earth, as doing so takes C.C. (who stowed away with them) beyond the effective range of their mental bond.
  • Foil:
    • To Haggar. Both are women who act as the Number Two of an emperor who is also their husband, whilst also being accomplished fighters. Both are also Happily Married and have ways to extend their lives beyond what is natural - Marianne via Body Surf, Hagar through the usage of Quintessence. Finally, both are also talented fighters. As for differences, Marianne is a physical fighter to Haggar preferring magic, and while Marianne is genuinely well-intentioned, Haggar has long since lost any good intentions she had. Also, while Marianne still remembers her time as Charles love, Haggar doesn't.
    • She's also one to Kallen, since both are the Love Interests of a Britannian royal and more capable fighters than the object of their affections, who instead rely on mystical powers. Both also come from lower-class backgrounds than their figures of affection, yet moved beyond this handicap. But while Marianne is wholly devoted to Charles' plan, Kallen is more devoted to helping others and is helping Lelouch come to that line of thinking as well. Additionally, while Marianne while possessing Anya is a Long-Range Fighter, Kallen is a Close-Range Combatant.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Revelations in later chapters heavily imply that she's half-Galra.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: A lot of secrets regarding Marianne - that she is still alive, that she has a Geass, and that she is in league with her husband - were not revealed until R2 of Code Geass. Here, though, these spoilers are brought to light around the third chapter of the story (discounting the fact that the first chapter was posted in six individual parts).
  • Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Marianne fell in love with the Emperor of Britannia and is wholly devoted to his plans, while her mother, implied to be Krolia, rebelled against Zarkon and joined the Blade of Marmora.
  • Number Two: To her husband, regarding the Ragnarök Connection.

    Prince Odysseus

Odysseus su Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/63993.jpg
The First Prince of Britannia and heir to the throne.
  • The Ghost: Has yet to appear in the story, but has been mentioned a few times. Shows up in Chapter 44.
  • Inadequate Inheritor: Pretty much everyone agrees he is not fit to hold the throne.
  • Only Sane Man: Is one of the few members up the Royal Family to realize that taunting the Galra is a bad idea.
  • Token Good Teammate: Of sorts - Lelouch includes him among his mental list of siblings who might join them when considering which members of the Royal family might aid Voltron in Confessions and Revelations. This is more because he is Weak-Willed and doesn't like to be pointlessly cruel rather than actual goodness, though.

    Princess Guinevere

Guinevere de Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/guineveredebritannia.jpg
The First Princess of Britannia.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Tries to back-talk the Galra commanders for disrespecting the royals. It nearly gets her killed.

    Prince Schneizel

Schneizel el Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9180_1284099444.jpg
The Second Prince of Britannia and the nation's prime minister.

    Princess Cornelia

Cornelia li Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/3fa282449ee48d755c7157ba0c636c09.jpg
The Second Princess of Britannia, Lelouch's elder half-sister, and the Viceroy of Area Eleven.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Gets her right arm sliced off by Zarkon in Chapter 37.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Cornelia is normally a sound tactician and strategist, but she'll resort to this if she's sufficiently angered, as seen both times she fights a Voltron Lion. It doesn't really work to her benefit.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Cornelia was Lelouch's greatest enemy as Zero. The keyword being was - by the time the Paladins return to Earth, they've become strong enough to make mincemeat of her forces, with Lelouch and Kallen personally delivering her a Curb-Stomp Battle twice in rapid succession.
  • Big Sister Instinct:
    • Is really unhappy when Schneizel tells her that she cannot see Nunnally after the second prince found her, as she had assumed her younger sister had been dead for years. When Voltron manages to rescue Nunnally, she's so enraged that she attacks the machine even when totally outnumbered and outgunned, leading to her capture.
    • This applies to Lelouch as well. She tries to stand alone against Zarkon to keep him from her little brother.
  • Blinded by Rage: Falls victim to this in Reunion Over the Pacific, becoming incredibly sloppy due to Kallen's taunts.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Cornelia is completely floored when she meets Nunnally aboard the Castle of Lions, as not only is the latter not a prisoner, she can see and walk again.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Is left totally flat-footed when Lelouch reveals himself as Zero, as she never considered the possibility a Britannian Royal would lead the forces most opposed to Britannia.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride, mixed in with Big Sister Instinct. Just like Lelouch, Cornelia is normally a capable Knightmare pilot and strategist, but if her younger siblings are in danger, she'll act very rashly. Additionally, she progressively acts more and more aggressively against the Lions due to repeatedly taking losses against them. It all comes to a head in Chapter 29, where the Paladins not only rescue Tohdoh but also destroy the Avalon. While Schneizel was not on the ship, the loss of the vessel, combined with her earlier defeats (including having the Paladins rescue Nunnally while she was helpless to do anything) lead her to recklessly charge Voltron, which ends with her Knightmare getting wrecked and Cornelia herself captured.
  • Foil: To Allura. Both are/were princesses who have a temper and display Fantastic Racism (Elevens/Japanese for Cornelia, Galra for Allura) due to losing family (Lelouch and Nunnally for Cornelia, Alfor for Allura). But while Cornelia is a Badass Normal Warrior Princess who fights in her Gloucester, Allura can use magic to a certain extent and fights using the Castle of Lions. Also, while Cornelia has several siblings (Euphie being full-blooded and lots of half-siblings), Allura is an only child. Additionally, while Cornelia is unrepentantly racist toward the numbers, Allura realizes that her hatred of the Galra makes her no different from Zarkon and is beginning to take steps to move past it.
  • High-Heel–Face Turn: After hearing about the Galra, chooses to side with Lelouch and the Paladins of Voltron. Even when Charles himself sides with the Galra, Cornelia still remained Lelouch's ally.
  • Humiliation Conga: The Return to Earth Arc really puts her through the wringer.
    • First, Lelouch defeats her with contemptuous ease at Narita, while the Lions overwhelm her other forces...
    • Then, Voltron decimates the remainder of her army, forcing her to call a retreat.
    • And then, after finally finding out that Nunnally is still alive, she's denied permission to see her younger sister by Schneizel.
    • After that, she is defeated by Kallen while guarding the Avalon, who explicitly tells her she isn't worth Zero's time. Meanwhile, Suzaku, Milly, and Rivalz are demolishing the rest of her forces.
    • Finally, in Chapter 29, she not only has to witness Voltron breakout Tohdoh and destroy the Avalon (though with the knowledge that Schneizel was not on it at the time, but she is then captured by Kallen and becomes a prisoner of the Paladins.
  • Irony:
    • Cornelia fights Zero in the name of avenging the deaths of Lelouch and Nunnally (or at least she did until events in the story revealed the two are still alive), yet Zero is actually her long lost brother, Lelouch - who is also the first person to hand her a defeat.
    • While Cornelia tends to dismiss the natives of Area Eleven as Savages, her reaction to losing is arguably more childish than theirs, as she essentially throws a temper tantrum every time she loses.
  • Not So Stoic: She's reduced to Tears of Joy when reunited with Nunnally.
  • Oh, Crap!: Learning that Lelouch is scared of Haggar really drove home just how dangerous the Galra are.
Cornelia: "Lelouch… just who exactly have you been fighting?"
  • Shadow Archetype: She's essentially what Lelouch would have become if the latter had stayed with his family and come to believe in Britannia's ideals.
  • Sore Loser: Throws a tantrum whenever she loses to Voltron.
  • Tranquil Fury: Is practically seething with rage after Zero "kidnaps" Nunnally, just barely containing herself from yelling at Schneizel for letting it happen.
  • Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Cornelia didn't lose any of her skills while the Paladins were in space, but she also had nothing to test herself against, and Lloyd only seems to be interested in improving the Lancelot, so she hasn't improved at all since she last fought Zero and the Black Knights, and it shows.
  • The Worf Effect: Cornelia, possibly the best Knightmare pilot among the Britannian forces in Area Eleven (excluding Suzaku and The Knight of Nine Nonette Enneagram) gets completely destroyed by Lelouch at Narita and then by Kallen over the pacific, showing off just how much stronger the Lions are compared to any of Earth's Knightmares.
  • Worf Had the Flu: While Cornelia is routinely trounced by Lelouch and his allies, this isn't due to her suffering any Badass Decay - she is exactly as strong as she was when she previously fought the Black Knights. Emphasis on exactly - with a massive drop in terrorist activities after Zero vanished, she hasn't had anything to fight against and improve her skills. Lelouch, meanwhile, has gotten much, much, much stronger, and also obtained a mech that exceeds her Knightmare's power level by a wide margin.

    Princess Euphemia

Euphemia li Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/euphie_6.png
Third Princess of Britannia, Sub-Viceroy of Area Elven, and Cornelia's only full-blooded sibling.
  • Accidental Kidnapping: Lelouch was planning to let her return to Britannia, but reflexively takes her aboard the Black Lion rather than leave her in the same room as Haggar.
  • Excellent Judge of Character: Immediately realizes that Haggar is trouble just from seeing her once.
  • Foil: To Allura. Both are/were princesses who wish to help others, but while Euphie is an Actual Pacifist who doesn't fight, Allura is far more willing to get her hands dirty. Also, while Euphie doesn't hate the Japanese for (supposedly) murdering Lelouch and Nunnally, Allura doesn't trust any Galra after they wiped out her people.
  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Tries to do this to Lelouch regarding the Altean Food Goo. Lelouch admits he already knows it tastes horrible.
  • Naked on Revival: The process of reviving her from near-fatal injuries via cryopod ends up destroying her clothes. Allura and Nunnally made sure to keep some spares on hand when she was close to waking.
  • Official Couple: Becomes one with Suzaku in Chapter 31, following a Love Confession.
  • Princess Classic: Just as in canon.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Figured out that Lelouch was Zero back at Lake Kawaguchi, but kept it secret until they were reunited at Kamine Island.
  • Ship Tease: With Suzaku. Nonette wonders if she's spending time with the Camelot Division to get to know her boyfriend better, reducing Euphemia to blushing and stammering. This culminates in a Love Confession in Chapter 31. Suzaku is also the Paladin most affected by Nebiros' attempt to assassinate her, and is the one to take her back to the castle to be healed.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Explicitly stated by Word of God. When Rolo shoots her during the SAZ incident, she gets put into a cryopod to heal her. She wakes up, fully healed, during the Battle of Tokyo.
  • Token Good Teammate: Euphie is the only member of the Britannian Imperial Family that appears in person that has been shown to be a genuinely nice human being, as Odysseus and Marrybel have yet to make a physical appearance. She loses this status in Chapter 37 due to joining the Voltron Coalition.

    Princess Carine

Carine ne Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_02_08_at_103722_am.png
The 5th Princess of Britannia.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Backtalks the Galra commanders when they call the Royal Family 'fat pigs.' Only her personal knight, Dasko, stops her from confronting them physically, which likely would have gotten her killed.

    Princess Marrybell

Marrybel mel Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/story_chara_00913.png
The 88th Princess of Britannia, and leader of the Glinda Knights.
  • The Ghost: Has yet to appear in the story, though she is mentioned a few times. Finally puts in an appearance in Chapter 44.
  • The Mole: It's heavily implied that she is the informant 'Elphaba' giving information to Peace Mark.
  • Token Good Teammate: Lelouch mentally pegs her as one of the few members of the royal family who might aid Voltron during the events of Confessions and Revelations. While she's shown fighting for Britannia under the Galra occupation, Wizard of Peace Mark mentions an anonymous informant aiding them named 'Elphaba'. Considering the Glinda Knights tendency towards Wizard Of Oz references, and that Elphaba is the name of her Knightmare frame...

The Knights of the Round

    In General
The elite warriors of the Empire.
  • Elite Mooks: Serve as this for the Empire. In force, they actually manage to fight the Lions to a standstill.
  • The Psycho Rangers: Following Shin's induction into the group, they become this to the Paladins.
    • Lelouch and Bismark are the Geass-wielding leaders of the group and outwardly appear to be the most professional, but secretly have Large Ham tendencies and possess Geass powers that they revel in using.
    • Kallen and Dorothea are both aggressive women who tend to be the most hot-headed of their groups and have Fantastic Racism toward other species/ethnicities, though Kallen has started moving past this as of late.
    • Rivalz and Gino are down to earth teens who hit on girls without much success and are all around Nice Guys.
    • Rai and Anya are the most logical members of their group and have gaps in their memories, though Rai is more emotive than Anya by a wide margin.
    • Shirley and Monica are the most "normal" of their groups, being girls who have no major personal flaws and come off as level-headed compared to their allies, though both secretly have their own issues (Shirley's devotion to Lelouch and (canonically) Monica being a Blood Knight).
    • Milly and Luciano are the quirkiest of their groups, having habits that attract annoyance from their compatriots which they seem to revel in. Milly most certainly is not an insane Blood Knight like Luciano, though.
    • Suzaku and Shin are Japanese-borne warriors who outwardly maintain an aura of professionalism, but secretly hold limited value toward their own lives and have a rather twisted psyche as a result.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: Are upgraded from Elite Mooks to this in Chapter 44, as Haggar gives them access to Knightmares hybridized with Galra magic.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In-universe, it's noted the Knights brought in seem to disappear from Area 11 after the Galra arrive. They're nowhere to be seen throughout the Black Rebellion. They reappear with the rest of their roster sometime after the invasion, with the implication that Charles ordered them to sit out the Black Rebellion.

    Bismarck

Knight of One Bismarck Waldstein

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9180_129512547.jpg
The current leader of the Knights of the Round.

    Gino

Knight of Three Gino Weinberg

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0af7bfee37d8c0175341a55b996dfeda.jpg
A member of the Knights of the Round.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: He appears in Japan during Zero's duel with Nonette.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He says in Chapter 44, that when he was a kid, he wanted to be an astronaut. In a manner of speaking, he got his wish, but not in the way he hoped.
  • Innocently Insensitive: He tries to lighten the mood in chapter 44, about how he wanted to be an astronaut. Monica and Dorothea both call him out on it.
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Gino did not want to abandon Nonette when Schneizel fired the Le Fay's Hadron Cannons on the Black Lion and the Gawain. Schneizel made sure to not tell him about this, though, so he doesn't find out about the plan until this has already happened.
  • Token Good Teammate: He is the least evil of the Knights of the Round, for while the others don’t like working with the Galra due to their Fantastic Racism, his issues with the Galra is because they’re worse than Britannia.

    Dorothea

Knight of Four Dorothea Ernst

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_02_06_at_40134_pm.png
A member of the Knights of the Round.
  • Dramatic Irony: Disdains Haggar for being a member of the Galra. While Dorothea would probably hate Haggar just for not being Britannian, readers know that Haggar isn't a Galra — she's an Altean.
  • Fantastic Racism: Among the Knights of the Round, she's the most blatantly racist toward the Numbers, and barely manages to keep her disdain toward the Galra in check when speaking with Haggar. She’s also the least thrilled to be working with Shin, whose Japanese.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: While she really wants to challenge Haggar after the latter questions the Knights of the Round's ability to fight Voltron, she keeps quiet because she has no counterarguments to offer Haggar.

    Anya

Knight of Six Anya Alstreim

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/b40befbe4149ddd98208471dbca441da.png
The youngest member of the current Knights of the Round, and a very emotionless girl.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She appears in Japan during Zero's duel with Nonette.
  • Emotionless Girl: Nothing seems to faze her. She doesn't seem remotely surprised when she encounters the Lions of Voltron.
  • Sharing a Body: Chapter 44 has Haggar realize that Anya has a second consciousness inside her head. While unstated, that consciousness is Empress Marianne.

    Nonette

Knight of Nine Nonette Enneagram

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4543453_640px.jpg
A member of the Knights of the Round and an old friend of Cornelia.
  • Accidental Kidnapping: She ends up on the Green Lion when it escapes Kamine Island because she refused to let go of Rai.
  • Ace Pilot: She is the pilot of the Gawain. This automatically qualifies her for this trope because, despite the Gawain canonically requiring two pilots, she is never mentioned as having a copilot.
  • Curb Stomp Cushion: Is this for the entirety of Britannia so far - she's the only member of Britannia to fight a Voltron Lion and not get her ass handed to her.
  • Genki Girl: She's a very upbeat and cheerful person, much to Cornelia's exasperation.
  • I Will Find You: The second she saw Rai's face and recognized him as the missing Prince Zephyr, she immediately goes to Area 11 to help look for him and his family.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Is just as surprised as Lelouch when her Knightmare locks up after colliding with Zenobia during their duel in Chapter 32. This is because Schneizel wanted to lure Lelouch into a position where he could take out the Black Paladin even if doing so cost Britannia potentially irreplaceable asset.
  • More Expendable Than You: Pulls a near-suicidal charge to make the Siegfried vunlerable to attack so Cornelia doesn't have to.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: None of her fellow Knights of the Round try to save her from the attack meant to wipe out the Paladins. That being said, it's possible they were ordered not to by Schneizel, and a Britannian Royal's word would be absolute. Sure enough, Isle of the Gods confirms they were ordered to fall back, and that Gino, at least, wasn't happy about doing so.
  • Shipper on Deck: She teases Euphie about her relationship with Suzaku, which makes sense considering that her former charges were half-Japanese.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Zephyr and his branch of the Royal Family. This is not the case regarding Charles, as the latter doesn’t give a damn about Zephyr, Sophronia, or Erina. As such, once she learns Zephyr is Rai and one of the Paladins, she joins them in opposing the Galra, and remains with them despite Charles declaring Britannia's joining the Galra.

    Luciano

Knight of Ten Luciano Bradley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lucianobradley.png
The Knight of Ten, and the most Ax-Crazy member of the group.

    Monica

Knight of Twelve Monica Krushevsky

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_02_06_at_40419_pm_5.png
A member of the Knights of the Round.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While she's loyal to Charles (she's the head of his Praetorian Guard), even she has issues working with the Galra.
  • Undying Loyalty: Canonically has this for Charles, being the head of his royal guard. That being said, the alliance with the Galra has put that loyalty to the test.

     Shin

Shin Hyūga Shaing

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_02_08_at_104456_am.png

A Japanese Pilot from Euro Britannia who was brought in to replace Nonette.

  • Broken Pedestal: Ashley had looked up to him as a pseudo older brother, but when he chose to ally with the Galra rather than fight back, he was angered by his betrayal, and went rogue with the rest of the Asura Strike Force.
  • Establishing Character Moment: He’s introduced reacting unimpressed with Luciano throwing a knife at him, and leaves the Knight of Ten flatfooted when he shoots down his usual spiel of how their lives are what people value most.
  • Eviler than Thou: He proves to be much more vile than Luciano Bradley, when he tells him that he sees no value in his life.
  • Horrifying the Horror: When he tells Luciano of how he sees no value in his own life, the Knight of Ten, unable to fathom such a notion, reacts with fear.
  • Not Afraid to Die: While he isn't a Death Seeker, he defies Luciano belief that what people value most are their lives by stating he, personally does not value his life. This is implied to be the first time someone ever told the Knight of Ten this, and he's visibly nervous upon learning this.
  • You Are in Command Now: He became the Grandmaster of the Order of St. Micheal after the previous Grandmaster, Michele Manfredi, committed suicide. Spoilers

    Jeremiah

Jeremiah Gottwald

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/113fa0e50668ab4bc02574610103f295_5.jpg
Leader of the Purist faction.
  • Dramatic Irony: Idolizes Marianne and, by proxy, Lelouch, yet attempts to kill (and is almost killed by) Zero, who is really Lelouch in disguise.
  • Elite Mooks: Same as in canon, Jeremiah shows up to the Black Rebellion piloting the Siegfried. This time it's been designed by the Galra.
  • Internal Reveal: After being captured by Haggar and having his memories examined, some of Haggar's comments make Jeremiah realize that Lelouch and Zero are one and the same.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Viletta, who is genuinely saddened by his apparent death.

    Villetta

Villetta Nu

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/villetta_nu___standing_by_tracerunit4.png
A knight and fellow member of the Purists.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Shows up in time to save Nunnally from V.V.
  • Character Development: Being with Voltron for the duration of the coalition's stay on Earth makes her understand why they oppose Britannia and the Galra, leading Viletta to make the conscious decision to remain with them even after getting back her memories.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Villetta genuinely does not seem to believe that Britannia is evil. When Shirley explains her reasons for being one of the Black Knights (well, Voltron Paladins), Villetta actually assumes that the orange-haired girl was brainwashed by Zero.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Even after regaining her memories and identity, she decides to stay loyal to Voltron, even saving Nunnally from V.V.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even though the circumstances are COMPLETELY different, she still faces Shirley and gets shot (though by C.C.). She also still loses her memories like in canon, only recovering them after the SAZ.
  • Mexican Standoff: Get's into one with Shirley in Chapter 26. She did not notice C.C., though.
  • Pet the Dog: When she assumes that Shirley was brainwashed by Zero into joining the Black Knights, she's perfectly willing to send Shirley to the best psychiatric help available, and even personally oversee her treatment. Somewhat warped, but surprisingly nice.
  • Villainous Friendship: Villetta is good friends with Jeremiah, In fact, his conversion into a cyborg was one of her reasons for staying with the Voltron Coalition, despite not knowing if it was Galra or Britannia who altered him.

    Guilford

Gilbert G.P. Guilford

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9180_207227097.jpg
Cornelia's Knight of Honor.
  • Defector from Decadence: He joins Princess Cornelia and Darlton in siding against the Emperor and the Galra.
  • Lady and Knight: Is the Black Knight to Cornelia's Dark Lady.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Cornelia, while also counting as Ship Tease. He has trouble sleeping after Cornelia is captured during the mission to rescue Tohdoh. When the Emperor declares Cornelia a traitor, he sides with her against him without a second's pause.
  • The Worf Effect: Get's demolished by Lelouch in the Black Lion, and later knocked out of the sky by Rivalz in the Blue Lion.

    Darlton

Andreas Darlton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andreas_darlton_1962.jpg
Another of Cornelia's knights.
  • Defector from Decadence: He joins Princess Cornelia and Guilford in siding against the Emperor and the Galra.
  • Killed Off for Real: He's killed by Zarkon following the alien's arrival to Earth.
  • Oh, Crap!: His reaction when he sees the Blue Lion entering the Battle of Narita. Given that he last saw it taking off at Lake Kawaguchi, he has ample reason to be worried.
  • The Worf Effect: He gets defeated relatively early on by the Blue Lion at Narita and then by the Yellow Lion while guarding the Avalon. Then he's unceremoniously blown up by Zarkon to show how dangerous he is even to Knightmares.

    The Glaston Knights

Alfred G., Bart L., Claudio S., David T., and Edgar N. Darlton

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/glaston_knights.png
From left to right: David, Bart, Alfred, Claudio, and Edgar Darlton.
Darlton's adopted sons, and some of the best warriors of the Empire.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: They show up guarding the prison Tohdoh is held in.
  • Death by Adaptation: Claudio, who was the sole survivor of the group in canon (excluding Guilford) is slain during the Black Rebellion by Zarkon.
  • Defector from Decadence: They join their father in siding against the Emperor and the Galra.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation:
    • In canon, Alfred is fried by Kallen's Guren during the first portion of R2 while Bart is killed slightly earlier when his Sutherland is run over by Guilford's G1 base. Here, both are killed by Galra fighters during At Least With Sorrow, with Bart actually outliving his brother by about a minute.
    • Also in canon, David and Edgar are killed by Chiba and Tohdoh during the Second Battle of Tokyo, while Claudio survives the series. Here, all three die in the Black Rebellion during Battle for Home, Edgar getting sliced in half by the Siegfried, and David and Claudio being killed by Zarkon when he arrives personally.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye:
    • Alfred and Bart are killed off in Chapter 36 with barely any characterization.
    • Edgar, David, and Claudio don't fair much better in Chapter 37.

Research and Development

    Lloyd

Lloyd Asplund

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lloyd_asplund.png
Head scientist of the Camelot Division.
  • Admiring the Abomination: From the Britannian perspective, his reactions to the Lions and Voltron is this.
  • Berserk Button: Don't imply the Lancelot is a shoddy design. Just don't. He will make an exception if the person doing this is a Sufficiently Advanced Alien, because they are far enough beyond mankind that this is a perfectly reasonable response.
  • Doctor von Turncoat: When the Galra invade and occupy Earth, he jumps at the opportunity to join the Voltron Coalition. He’s later shown getting along quite well with the Olkari after they’re liberated from the Galra, even after they call the Lancelot primitive.
  • Foil: To Coran - both are downright obsessed with an advanced piece of technology (the Lancelot for Lloyd, the Castle of Lions for Coran) and tend to grate on their companions' nerves. Lloyd, however, has No Social Skills, while Coran is incredibly refined when he wants to be. Additionally, Lloyd tends to be rather amoral vs Coran being unambiguously on the side of good. One wonders what would happen if they were to meet.
  • Heel–Face Turn: While it's mostly so that he doesn't lose Suzaku as a devicer, Lloyd joins Cecile in commanding the Avalon to side with the Paladins during The Bloodstained Alliance.
  • Instant Expert: Once he gets his hands on an Olkari headband, he immediately figures out how to use it, and begins to mass produce wooden versions of the Lancelot.
  • Mad Scientist: But of course! Lloyd may be a benign version, but he's still zany and a bit of a Manchild.
  • Nerdgasm: His reactions to, well, anything the Lions do are interesting. And then there's when he first sees Voltron in all its glory.
"This-This is-! I can't even-! OOOoooOOOoooOOHHHH! This is amazing! I never thought I'd see such a thing in my entire life!"
  • Oh, Crap!: In contrast to his reaction to the Lions and Voltron, Lloyd was downright horrified to see Zarkon tearing apart the Glaston Knights. On foot, no less.
  • Spotting the Thread: While he doesn't quite make the connection, Lloyd notices that the Purple Lion reacts to fighting the Lancelot as if its pilot knew what the White Knightmare's abilities were. Something that only Lloyd, Cecile, and Suzaku would know...
    • After he learns about Zarkon's connection to the Black Lion, he guesses that the Galra Emperor has reasons beyond sentimentality for wanting Voltron so bad, and for not just destroying it, since it's a threat to them, and since they can create Robeasts of similar power, it's not like having the Lions under their control would make that much of a difference in the war effort. Sure enough, Coran then reveals that Zarkon wants to open a new rift between realities.
  • Wing Ding Eyes: His eyes are described as having hearts in them whenever he sees the Lions or Voltron itself.

    Cécile

Cécile Croomy

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cecile_groomy.png
Lloyd's subordinate and often Beleaguered Assistant.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: Is this for Lloyd, having to constantly put up with his eccentricities.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Is normally this, but the meal she makes for Suzaku after he returns to Britannia is actually surprisingly edible. Word of God is that she deliberately stuck with something simple because she didn't want to offend Suzaku.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Does not hesitate to back up Suzaku and the Paladins after Emperor Charles declares them to be traitors in The Bloodstained Alliance.
  • Only Sane Man: Well, woman, but she comes off as this compared to Lloyd, as she tends to be more focused on pressing issues as opposed to Lloyd's borderline insanity.

    Bartley Asprius

Bartley Asprius

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/17455.jpg
The head of the Code R Project.
  • Ear Ache: Corza cuts off one of his ears to make a point about what will happen to those who defy her.
  • Make an Example of Them: He is the example in question. Corza cuts off his ear when he tries to stand up for Prince Schneizel to make it clear that she is willing to harm and kill those under her supervision if they step out of line. This is one of the few non-lethal examples of this trope.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the royal family as a whole, though primarily to Clovis (for unstated reasons) and Schneizel (for commuting his prison sentence). He immediately moves to stand up for Schneizel when Corza talks down to the prince. It costs him an ear.

    Joseph Fenette

Joseph Fenette

Shirley's father, and a member of Code R.
  • Ambiguous Situation: While he is a member of Code R, whether or not he is a Mad Scientist or Punch-Clock Villain is never specified.
  • Good Parents: Genuinely loves his daughter, something she reciprocates. He's in just as much shock as his wife Aurora when he finds out Shirley is the Orange Paladin. Shirley makes a point to rescue both of them after the SAZ Massacre happens, to prevent a Hostage Situation.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: The Narita Landslide never happens due to Black Knights having Voltron as an ally, and Shirley later picks him and his wife, Aurora, up just before the Black Rebellion commences.

Geass Directorate

    V.V.

V.V. / Victor zi Britannia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/83146.jpg
A secretive Code Bearer, and Charles's elder twin brother.
  • Always Identical Twins: Averted - Charles and Victor are one of the rare examples of fraternal twins of the same gender in fiction. Additionally, Victor hasn't aged a day since he got his code, so Charles is physically much older than him.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Is subjected to this during the Black Rebellion, courtesy of Villetta. While not enough to keep him down, it does give the heroes the chance to take him prisoner.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Is baffled when Lelouch claims that he views the rest of the Paladins as his family, despite only being blood-related to Rai. He ends up screaming in rage that they can't be family due to lacking blood ties. Kallen even lampshades that they could attempt explaining it to him, but she doubts that he would understand.
  • Foil: To Haggar - both are extremely old allies of their respective emperors, and love them, though whereas Haggar's feelings are romantic, Victor's are platonic. Both also manage a secret society of magic wielders in their respective empires' forces and create special soldiers for them (Geass-wielders for Victor, Robeasts for Haggar). Victor, however, is physically a ten-year-old boy while Haggar looks like a Wicked Witch though a look at her face shows that she's aged quite well. Additionally, Victor has no combat skills while Haggar is a Red Mage who straight out dominates Lelouch in a fight.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Victor sent Lelouch to Kamine Island with the intent of forcing his Geass to mature much faster than it normally should. Said Geass actually matures even faster than it did in canon, but does so at just the right moment for said Geass (now covering both eyes) to help Lelouch instead of hinder him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: He does not like the level of affection that Charles shows to Marianne and her children. In addition to being the one who killed Marianne, he also secretly orders Rolo to kill Nunnally at the SAZ, despite Charles wanting her alive, and tries to kill her again when infiltrating the Castle of Lions to capture C.C..
  • Hate Sink: V.V. is so petty, childish and cruel that it is hard to find anyone who supports him. His own brother, despite loving him (a feeling that is mutual), doesn’t completely trust him, for good reason.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Sends Lelouch, Rai, Euphemia, and Nonette to Kamine Island, likely with the intent of driving the former two's Geasses berserk via Thought Elevator exposure. When Zenobia and Zerith rescue them, Zen ends up destroying the Thought Elevator, throwing a massive wrench into the Ragnarök Connection.
  • Kick the Dog: Goes out of his way to mock Allura over the destruction of Altea when he meets her, and paralyzes her with a vision of said destruction.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: A villain who is effectively immortal, but is also prone to throwing tantrums if things don't go his way.
  • Sadist: When he paralyzes Allura with visions of Altea's destruction, it's very clear that he's enjoying her suffering, and while seeing Marianne in Nunnally's eyes factors into his attempt to murder her, it also seems to be out of frustration that she interrupted his "fun" with the alien princess.
  • Would You Like to Hear How They Died?: Admits to killing Marianne in For Those We Love and uses this to provoke Lelouch into getting close enough to grab him so they V.V. can use his code on him.
