The Leather Rebel

The main character of the comic, and POV character, a mercenary born from a middle-class working family, after being scarred in the military service, he was going to go back to his family, but ended up running away with his army's girlfriend. A day afterwards he becomes a bouncer, and shortly after, a mercenary under threat. Years later he works under "Rouge" after she saved him from bleeding out in an alley, albeit, under the threat of his head exploding.

  • Alliterative Name: Daniel Dietrich.
  • Anti-Hero: He's a good guy at heart, just not the usual definition of good person...
    • Action Hero: Definitely, even as far back when he was on the military service he jumped without hesitation to save his friend.
  • Badass Normal: It certainly takes guts and a degree of badassery to go against cyborgs and other trained mercenaries, and winning!
  • Barbarian Hero: The main concept behind his looks, according to Word of God, it was to transplant a Barbarian Hero to a Cyberpunk setting.
  • Barbarian Long Hair: One of his most prominent traits is his long blond hair, contrasting with the undercuts and short hair of other characters.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Fitting to give him a manly appearance, contrasting his fair features, giving him a mixture between Pretty Boy as a teen and Hunk as adult.
  • Boots of Toughness: Daniel never appears without a pair of black leather boots. Either with stars emblazoned in, metal studs, or just regular army boots, and he gives them good use.
  • Break the Badass: After his first kill, he couldn't take it well, and ended up vomiting and crying his eyes later that night. Up until that point, both in the present and past of the story, it's shown that he's happy go lucky, Hot-Blooded and stoic enough to be able through a lot of crap and go mostly well. This was the last straw.
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: Played for Laughs, he's stated by the thug from Track #8 to look like a bad Billy Idol cosplayer, complete with Daniel himself saying he likes to "Dance with himself". Funnily enough, per Word of God, Daniel was gonna originally look less punk and more subdued, without spiky hair nor makeup.
    • On the other hand, he has an uncanny resemblance to actor Daniel Dietrich, but Fluhor stated it's one hell of a coincidence in his twitter, he wasn't even aware there was an actor that had this name.
  • Conspicuous Gloves: Fingerless gloves with studs; he's had them since his days as a mercenary.
  • Darker and Edgier: Both figuratively and literally, he was just a normal teenager, then the army, alongside bad decisions changed him forever.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: He starts with short hair, passing through a Billy Idol inspired Spiky Hair, to medium-length bangs, and culminating with his mane.
  • Explosive Leash: Despite the fact that he's happy to work with Rouge, it's just to be sure, according to her.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: One of the kindest characters of the setting, and ironically one of the most violent ones…
  • Has a Type: Brunettes, or at least girls with either dark hair or complexion. Although in a bonus comic, he states that he likes Tomboy's.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather; He's consistently shown dressed with leather jackets, longcoats, and boots, even before abandoning his civilian life.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At first glance, a cocky mercenary, who'd rather talk a robber out, instead of killing him directly. He also gives encouraging words to people in times of distress, like the cashier at the end of the second chapter, he's a good person all things considered.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice:He has a prominent square chin, even as a teenager, more evident in the close-ups, and for the most part, a force of good.
  • Loveable Rogue: A friendly hired-for-money mercenary, that's what he is... Unless you hurt someone innocent.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: He has had a lot of weapons over the years, but his debut has him with a chipped katana, that according to Rouge, the battery was busted. How it works, it's still a mystery, although can argue it was similar in functionality to the High-Frequency blades from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
  • Meaningful Name: Roque means "Strong as a rock" in Spanish.
  • Metalhead: His Leather Man getup and Barbarian Long Hair aren't just for looks, alongside his mercenary nickname, "The Leather Rebel", it's a subtle way to characterize him as one. He'd fit right in the whole Rocker Boy class of the Cyberpunk game.
  • Progressively Prettier: Alongside Art Evolution, at the beginning he was scruffier, if somewhat Gonk, a few chapters later, besides his teenage years, he's much closer to a Long-Haired Pretty Boy than in his debut.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: His black Badass Long Coat doesn't precisely scream hero, to be fair, but he's a good person... For the most part.
  • Red Baron: The "Leather Rebel" is not just a moniker, it's one of the nicknames he's known for by other mercenaries and by the militia themselves
    • Track #8 reveals it was given to him by his first boss.
  • Revolvers Are Just Better: His old Rsh-12 is shown very prominently in his design and ends up being decisive in many encounters. It's shown in the flashback that it belongs to an old comrade of his, that interestingly enough, also has blond hair with bangs.
  • Street Samurai: He's a definite example, moreso in his younger days. When he joins Rouge, unbeknownst to him, he became a Corporate Samurai, due the fact she's a CEO of a pharmaceutical company.
  • Took a Level in Badass: From a cadet getting his ass kicked by a girl one head shorter, to being able to hold on his own against a cyborg in less than two years, is certainly impressive.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: From stoic teenager with some anger issues, to Hot-Blooded angry adult, jaded with the state he lives in.
    • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In a blink and you'll miss it, one panel shows him and his father in a fair, looking like a cute little kid.
  • "X" Marks the Hero: His prominent scar on his left cheek, he usually hides it from people in the present.

     Rouge

"Rouge" Nimsi

The Cybernetic Valkyrie

The charismatic Rebel Leader who wants to abolish the dictatorship from her country, recruits Daniel after he's fatally stabbed, she infuses him with her nanomachines to speed up the process of his healing. Gives him an ultimatum to join her, which he accepts. Currently interrogating Daniel due his past, she knows a lot about him and apparently she has a little crush on him. In reality she's the CEO of her own company that focuses on pharmaceutical technology and nanomachines, using her economic power to gather resources, doing domestic terrorism against the government.

  • The Alcoholic: Kaworu's call her a fan of the Irish coffee, which she chastizes her.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Downplayed because while mysterious, she pulls the act of being a cheeky woman, but while talking about business that mask falls off.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She's 5'11" tall, making her the tallest woman so far, and she has both an imposing muscular physique while also looking very feminine.
  • Ambiguously Evil: Her reasoning is firmly on the side of good, her methods? Eh… Hiring mercenaries to execute a coup d'etat wouldn't be the most legal way to make a revolution, but it's what she wants to do.
  • Brainy Brunette: She's the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, while also being a scientist herself.
  • Electronic Eyes: Her right eye is a glowing red one that it's made of Machina Revoltare.
  • Expy: Despite being similar to Makima in her demeanor and attitude, she's based on Integra Hellsing, of all people, according to Word of God.
  • Goth: All of her outfits are consistently goth, either dresses, longcoats, or even more practical clothes, all have that goth flair like studs, lace, or something in between.
  • Hime Cut: A V-shaped one, fitting her relatively regal appearance, but also making her look somewhat menacing.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: A Cyberpunk CEO that wants to liberate her country of opression until the bitter end? With no ulterior motive behind it? Colour me surprised.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's a cheeky woman, but on the side of good nonetheless.
  • Ms. Fanservice: For what is worth with her goth outfits, shower scene, and bonus images of her and her lovely drawn derriere.
  • Mysterious Protector: How she meets Daniel, it's implied she's been following him from quite some time to gather info of his mercenary days, alongside body meassures, and other personal data.
  • Meaningful Name: Rouge means several things, from lipstick, to the color red. Nimsi on the other hand? It's an Hebrew name which means "Rescued from Danger".
    • Gender-Blender Name: At the same, while the origin is usually male, in the Spanish speaking world is usually used for females.
  • Scary Impractical Armor: Who'd have thought that behind that imposing black armor there was a beautiful woman? Bonus points for looking like Darth Vader without being a Tin Tyrant.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Oh yeah, she's a very cheery jerk, and proud of it. Either to her subordinates, or her bodyguards.
  • Tritagonist: She's the second main character, and leading force of the plot in the present
  • Valkyries: what Daniel thinks of her, anyways.

    Julio

Julio Sosa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/13color_copia.jpg
"Is this relevant?"
Rouge's enigmatic companion, not much is known about him currently, just he's antagonistic towards Daniel calling him names and being overall hostile to him.
  • Cool Shades: He has mirrored blue-green shades.
  • Foil: He's one to Daniel, wearing light coloured leather, has long black hair, and works as a mercenary for Rouge.
  • Greek Chorus: It should be noted he Lampshades all the inconsistencies and weird events of Daniel's backstory, calling it boring, dumb, or flat-out mundane, to which the girls tell him to shut up.
  • Heroic Build: Much more buff than Daniel, he's in a much better physical condition due to his line of work as Rouge's bodyguard.
  • Jerkass: Towards Daniel, at least.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: A Downplayed example, but he shares the same name and nationality as famous tango singer Julio Sosa.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: From what little has been shown, he's kind of a dick, but an entertaining one.

    Kaworu

Kaworu Cardozo

"You can trust us, we're comrades now."
Rouge's another enigmatic companion, a snarky half-Japanese girl, with dyed blue hair, and much more polite than Julio.

    Anahi

Anahí Gabriela O'Riordan

"Mind your own business!"
A punk girl who Daniel meets before joining the army, they had a rough meet up, both her being bruised and him traumatized due the events earlier at his home and the car. They end up as a couple after meeting each other outside of training, dating in secret. They were a couple for around 3 years according to the prologue, in which it's shown they break up, what happened remains to be seen.
  • Abusive Parents: Her father, was... Not kind, on his later years, it's explained it's due the stress caused due domestic terrorism and their powerlessness to counterattack it.
  • Battle Couple: With Daniel, natch, if she isn't fighting, she's giving some kind of support.
  • Broken Bird: On the present, around 2052 she wanted nothing regarding the mercenary world and became a civilian once again, on the first chapter she looks like she's doing fine by herself.
  • Deuteragonist: She's the other main character of the flashback arc.
  • Developing Doomed Characters: Downplayed Trope, by the fact that she's seen in 2054 fully alive, there's no way she will die in the flashback... Doesn't mean she's not gonna suffer, same with Daniel.
  • Expy: She's basically a mix between Casca and Lucia, but as a punk mercenary. Funnily enough, she also looks like an older, albeit bitter, Ed.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: From Delinquent Hair, to shaven, passing through Boyish Short Hair, going for a medium hairstyle, and culminating with long hair in the present.
  • Fiery Redhead: Oh yeah, totally, contrasting with Daniel's stoicism. One may wonder if his snarky personality on the present is due her influence on him, which considering how she is considerably snarkier, it's a possiblity.
  • I Have Brothers: Implied that part of her personality is due this.
  • Inappropriately Close Comrades: At least in the army, anyways.
  • Love at First Punch: They noted attraction at first, but the place was no good place to flirt. After some sparring sessions and some secret encounters they ended up becoming a couple shortly after.
  • Lust Object: Of Sirio, who has an unhealthy interest in her. Both her and Daniel are understandably pissed over the entire deal.
  • Meaningful Name: The Argentinian national flower? The cockspur coral tree. note
  • Military Brat: Her father was a lieutenant, and she served the army herself, albeit against her will
  • Neutral Female: Averted every time there's some kind of conflict, she'll fight back
  • The Quincy Punk: A more traditional punk, with her sporting and undercut and wild spiky hair, ripped jeans and some leather in her studded jacket. It has a basis on real life, too. Argentina had a pretty big Punk scene post-dictatorship, according to the author, this was very deliberate.
  • Spicy Latina: If her introduction wasn't enough, she also ends up as a mercenary like Daniel, and has quite the temper.
  • The Squadette: Whenever there's a conflict, she's usually in the ranks. Although this is discussed, as the military junta is very egalitarian when it comes to their armed forces.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Despite having masculine tastes in music and skills, she's usually dressed in punk clothing, albeit usually leaning on the feminine side.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Played straight and then subverted, for her night job as a waitress she must wear make-up and wear Stripperiffic outfits, but on her day to day life she's happy not using them. She's quite attractive herself without any of it.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Oh yes, fine you can harm her, harm Daniel and she's gonna lose her shit. Like when she grabbed a revolver and riddled César with bullets.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: She has golden brown eyes, unique to her, that Daniel comments on after their first meet, and once again when they have Their First Time.
  • Youthful Freckles: Which last up until her adulthood.

Characters from the Prologue

     Abigail

Abigail

The cashier that got punched by the robbers in the first episode after defending herself from sexual harassement.
  • Badass Bystander: Even if she got her mouth punched afterwards, it takes balls to stand up against a robber.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: A cute curly haired girl that has glowing glasses

     Sebastián

Sebastián

The butcher that works near Daniel's apartment, a pretty mellow guy.
  • The Confidant: Just a regular guy, who happens to be friends with a hardened mercenary.

     Gabriel

Gabriel

One of the robbers that killed the guard at the market, ends up with his neck broken.

     Pablo

Pablo

The other robber that ends up transformed and kills his friend. Everything goes to hell really fast.

     Chubby Woman
One of the civilians that almost gets killed by the robbers, ends up helping Daniel and Abigail.

Characters from Daniel's past

    Dietrich's Family
Daniel's family, a Nuclear Family that, although far from perfect, there was nothing wrong with them, but this being cyberpunk, they meet the cruel reality of this world.
  • Beard of Sorrow: After 2 years of not seeing their son back, Claudio grew a beard, after they leave, he's shown with his regular stubble
  • Good Parents: A constant example in all the flashbacks.
  • Papa Wolf: Claudio tried his best to protect Daniel from the handlers, but he was no match for them.

    Leo Rocha

Leo Rocha

Daniel's mentor and friend from the army, a homosexual young man that had to hide it, but it was more or less an open secret. And according to Daniel, something that was met with scorn.

    The Handlers
The 3 handlers that take Daniel in and send him to the military service
Daniel: Alright ,I'm h-JESUS CHRIST, YOU'RE HUGE!
  • Hand Blast: The more human looking one had this power, courtesy of the MR implants, Daniel's father learns about it in a bad way.
  • No Name Given: The Captain is just called that... While the tall imposing one is called Xavier, and the female one, Natasha.
    • Downplayed in Track #11, in which he reveals his name Captain Mendilaharzu, that while strange, it's a real name.
  • Two Guys and a Girl: Natch, hell, Natasha apparently likes to have fun with the cadets.
  • Villainous Cheekbones: The Captain has them. While Xavier has a cyborg Lantern Jaw of Justice one.

     Sirio Estelar
The owner of "Le Perv", and a mysterious but powerful individual, capable of calling the militia at any time to do his bidding. According to him, the bar is actually a hub for mercenaries and army people he employs, after Daniel broke a fight with a regular, he hired him and Anahí on the spot... Because he'd kill them otherwise.

     César
One of the first cyborgs Daniel faces, at first just a guy who was verbally abusing his girlfriend, ends up on Daniel's bad side and getting knocked out. The story, however doesn't end there, he ends up pissed and wants revenge on him, wanting to get stronger and killing him, after getting new Machina Revoltare implants by people who are implied to be other than human, he's back and wants to use his newfound electric powers to get revenge

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: He's presented this way
  • Ax-Crazy: Freely talks how he killed several servicemen.
  • Body Horror: After getting Machina Revoltare implants he becomes a travesty of a human, combined with electricity based powers and Combat Tentacles
  • Dark Is Evil: Oh yes, there's not much of a redeeming value on him, but he's happy indulging on this.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Presented as a formidable guy with a big physique, but gets disposed easily by Daniel. after he comes back with new implants he's every badass as he stated, and ends up killing several people in Le Perv.
  • Glass Eye: When he first appear, then it's upgraded to an Electronic Eye.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Dresses with Boots of Toughness and a leather vest when he first appears, when he appears later he's shown wearing a hoody and sportswear.
  • Killed Off for Real: This is the first meaningful casualty in the comic, and the one that affects Daniel the more.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Daniel, with the twist that this is basically what Daniel'd become if he didn't have his sense of justice in the present, having long hair, scars, wearing black clothing, and on a vendetta against the junta. The difference is that Daniel despite all the odds remains as a Vigilante Man that fights against corrupt people and Wouldnt Hurt An Innocent, while César doesn't give a damn about collateral damage.
