Orphen's Group
Krylancelo Finrandi aka Orphen
- Voiced by: Showtaro Morikubo (Japanese); David Matranga (English, 1998 and 2020 TV series), Quinton Flynn (video game) (English); Pablo Ausensi (LA-Spanish)
- Adaptational Badass: In the first anime, he was a reasonably badass Magic Knight in his own right. In the 2020 anime, Orphen's magic is even more versatile and his combat speed is even faster than ever. He's also an even better unarmed hand-to-hand combatant than he was in the first series, being able to single-handedly beat down multiple opponents or high level sorcerers in the Tower of Fangs to the point that 2020 Orphen can be considered both a Magic Knight and a Kung-Fu Wizard.
- Almighty Janitor: Orphen's a pretty high level spellcaster who can exchange both physical and magical blows with high level sorcerers, take down plenty of dangerous magical creatures, and is talented enough to be considered one of thirteen candidates to become Court Sorcerer... but at the end of the day, he's still a dropout who never graduated and left the Tower of Fangs to focus on finding and curing Azalie.
- Badass Teacher: Towards his pupil Majic, who even refuses other people's offers to be his teachers (including Esperanza) because he admires the guy so much.
- Hell-Bent for Leather: He wears leather pants very, very stylishly.
- Heroic BSoD: When Hartia tells him about Azalie and Childman's Grand Theft Me.
- Hot-Blooded: While age does calm him down some, considering his frustration over how the Tower of Fang tried to cover up what happened to Azalie, his heart and emotions often drive him to act instead of walking away from someone else's problems.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Is rude and mouthy, but has a heart of gold and is completely devoted to those he loves.
- Kung-Fu Wizard: 2020 Orphen is as much of a physical, hand-to-hand fighter as he is a magic user and has proven himself capable of beating down both multiple and single opponents with his bare fists.
- Love Martyr: Arguably, to Azalie - after learning what she has done.
- Magic Knight: Part of where he gets his "Sorcerer Stabber" title from. He's essentially a magical mercenary, though he leans more towards physical knives than swords for practicality and being trained more as an assassin rather than a straight-up fighter.
- Start My Own: Starts his own magic school called the Swedenbrory School of Sorcery.
- Papa Wolf: Towards his companions, specially seen when he deals with Licorice's family and then Escalena
- Tall, Dark, and Snarky: He's pretty tall, with dark hair and tanned skin (plus black clothes), and holy shit he loves dealing the snark.
- That Man Is Dead: After he refuses to let go of Azalie!Bloody August and leaves the Tower."My name is not Krylancelo! FROM NOW ON, I'M ORPHEN!"
- Tragic Keepsake: The Tower pendant he wears? It's not his own. It's Azalie's.
- Warrior Therapist: Specially seen when he deals with Majic via both speaking to him and beating him up.
Claíomh Everlasting
- Voiced by: Mayumi Iizuka (1998 TV series), Rumi Ōkubo (2020 series) (Japanese); Shelley Calene-Black (1998 TV series), Sarah Wiedenheft (2020 TV Series) Jennifer Hale (video game) (English); Laura Orlázabal (LA-Spanish)
- Always Someone Better: She felt like this in regards to Stephanie.
- Bathing Beauty: She sees Orphen for the first time when she's taking a bath in the lake near to her village.
- Boarding School: The action kicks off when she actually returns from there.
- Hot-Blooded: Has a quick temper and doesn't always thinks things over.
- It's All About Me: Can be kinda selfish sometimes, to say it politely. She mostly grows out of it with time, and later it's more or less Played for Laughs.
- Meaningful Name: Claíomh is named after the sword in Irish Mythology, Claíomh Solais.
- Orphan's Plot Trinket: The Sword of Baltanders is actually a gift from her Disappeared Dad, hence why she tags along: to make sure Orphen will give it back to her.
- The Ojou: Mostly the Nice Girl type, unless she has a mood swing.
- Plucky Girl: And holy shit, HOW. When she and her sister got kidnapped by Bloody August, Claíomh attempted to save herself and Mariabelle almost without hesitation. It didn't work since, well, it was a girl against a dragon, but the thought does count.
- Spell My Name With An S: While her name is officially rendered in English as Claíomh for J-Novel Club's light novel releases, the ADV adaptation of the 1998 TV series calls her Cleao and the English release of the PlayStation 2 game uses Cleo.
- Tsundere: A Type A: she's harsh and Hot-Blooded, but very gentle when given the chance.
Majic Rin
- Voiced by: Omi Minami (1998 series), Yūsuke Kobayashi (2020 series), Chihiro Suzuki (Adult) (Drama CD) (Japanese); Spike Spencer (1998 TV series), Ry McKeand (2020 TV Series) Justin Jon Ross (video game) (English); Jorge Araneda (LA-Spanish)
- Brainwashed and Crazy: In Revenge, Esperanza does this to him. Orphen manages to undo it.
- Dub Name Change: His name is Magnus in the English dub of Scion of Sorcery.
- Evil Costume Switch: Interestingly enough, it's his standard outfit in most parts of the Haguretabi novels (except for the hat)
- We Can Rule Together: In Revenge, Esperanza offers to tutor him to unlock his potential as a sorcerer. Majic politely refuses, though... and he then gets Brainwashed and Crazy.
- Wholesome Crossdresser: In Revenge, though for a single episode
Leki
- Voiced by: Konami Yoshida (Japanese); Serena Varghese (English)
- Badass Adorable: A baby dragon with the shape of... a black little puppy.
- Our Dragons Are Different: As said above, he is the offspring of a dragon.
- Team Pet: Pretty much his role in the plot is being the group's cute pet. Claíomh even carries him in her arms many times, like a real puppy!
The Tower Of Fangs
Childman Powderfield
- Voiced by: Joji Nakata (1998 series), Daisuke Namikawa (2020 series) (Japanese), Jason Douglas (1998 TV Series English), J. Michael Tatum (2020 TV Series, English) Sandro Larenas (LA-Spanish)
- The Ace: He's the most handsome, skilled, admired, kind-hearted of the magic teachers in the Tower.
- Good All Along: In every introduction, he comes across as an antagonist who's there to get in Orphen's way and kill Azalie but after a while, it turns out that he deeply cares about Azalie and wants to save her. It just so happens that he has a really bad case of Poor Communication Kills, leaving Orphen in the dark about his true intentions and by the time Orphen finds out about his true nature, it's already too late to help him.
- Grand Theft Me: Azalie uses White Magic on him, so she ends up in his body... and he becomes Bloody August. He offers little to no resistence, though, due to the guilt he feels in regards to her horrible condition.
- Poor Communication Kills: Had he been clearer on how he wanted to help Azalie and not to kill her, lots of drama would've been avoided.
- Spared by the Adaptation: Played with in the original anime, which had him be reincarnated as Azalie's baby after Bloody August's form was destroyed, leaving the two souls with only one possible vessel. In the others he dies too soon for Orphan to find a means to save them both.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: Him and Azalie, since she deeply loved him and he's implied to have some feelings for her, but the whole Bloody August deal tore them apart.
Hartia
- Voiced by: Ryōtarō Okiayu (1998 series), Taito Ban (2020 series) (Japanese); Randy Sparks (English), Jorge Araneda and Tito Bustamante (LA-Spanish)
- Cain and Abel: Milder case with Orphen, as he is on the side of the Tower and not on Orphen's. He still cares for him, though, and tries to Take a Third Option by using a disguise to help him. It HORRIBLY backfires.
- Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He's actually a pretty decent spellcaster and a good magic teacher, quirky and all.
- Fangirl: Of a certain novel hero named the Black Tiger. He then dresses up as the Black Tiger and tries to assume the guise of its main character and namesake on occasion.
- He Knows Too Much: Not only does he find out what was going on with Childman!Azalie, but that Lai had become a Human Popsicle. Childman!Azalie almost kills him right there, and he barely escapes to Orphen and Co.'s side.
- Hey, You!: Claíomh and Majic never refer to him as Hartia, but as "the shrimp man". To be fair, at first they didn't know his name, but once they did it... well, it just stuck. The only two times Claíomh called him by his given name happened in their Birds of a Feather scene and while speaking to Orphen about Bloody August!Azalie.
Lai
- Voiced by: Katsumi Toriumi (Japanese), Vic Mignogna (English), Carlos Carvajal (LA-Spanish)
- He Knows Too Much: He was the first one to discover the truth about Azalie being in Childman's body.
- Human Popsicle: Rather than killing Lai, Azalie freezes him like this and then hides him. He's released almost at the end.
- Seers: This is supposed to be his biggest skill, and he even has a Crystal Ball for such effects.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is very, very good-looking, plus rather quiet and polite.
Azalie Caith Sith
- Voiced by: Emi Shinohara (1998 series), Yōko Hikasa (2020 series) (Japanese); Christine Auten ( 1998 TV Series, English), Lindsay Seidel (2020 TV Series, English) Loreto Ayala (LA-Spanish)
- Adaptational Jerkass: In the first anime, she did her share of shady things but was otherwise portrayed as being a tragic Broken Bird character. In the 2020 anime, she's a bigger jerk than ever, deliberately going out of her way to troll and cause trouble for Orphen and other students just for her own amusement. That being said... see Took a Level in Kindness.
- Adaptational Karma: While a tragic character, Azalie in the first anime did a lot of shady things and never gets called out on any of it, with Orphen going out of his way to defend her and try to save her to the very end. In the 2020 anime, Orphen calls her out on the the wrongs she's done to him and Childman and beats her down in a swordfight.
- Broken Ace: She was the most talented and beautiful witch from her generation... but also bitter, sad and more ambitious than she should be.
- Broken Bird: She had deep, deep insecurities, plus an immense Unrequited Love. Both factors mixed and Hell broke loose.
- Dark Magical Girl: An antagonistic figure and powerful magic user, with a deeply sad backstory and lots of bitterness behind her cold mask.
- Important Haircut: Chopped her long hair off when she started studying magic for real.
- Grand Theft Me: Happens late in the anime, due to being a Pragmatic Adaptation. Happens early on otherwise.
- Lady of Black Magic: Beautiful, stylish, and damn deadly with her magical spells.
- Love Makes You Evil: Had Childman not rejected Azalie's love for him...
- Took a Level in Kindness: While 2020 Azalie is undoubtedly a more mean-spirited character than the first anime's Azalie, she also puts in more work to redeem herself, particularly during the Battle of Kimluck, most notably saving Claíomh's life, rescuing Orphen from drowning, and most importantly sacrificing her own life to stop the Goddess and save Orphen and the whole world during the final episode of the second season.
Leticia "Tisha" Macready
- Voiced by: Kotono Mitsuishi (1998 series), Shizuka Itō (2020 series) (Japanese); Christine Auten (English)
- Cool Big Sis: In large part due to Azalie being an Adaptational Jerkass in the 2020 series who cares more about her own amusement and getting a rise out of everyone, including Orphen, this role is taken up more by 2020 Leticia who plays the part of the understanding and mature older sister figure who was also there for Orphen in his younger years and truly knows Orphen as a person inside and out.
- Demoted to Extra: In the first season of the 2020 anime, she was a more prominent supporting character. By the second season, she's reduced to a few, sparse flashback scenes.
- Lady of Black Magic: A longhaired beauty who handles her magic very gracefully.
Eris
- Voiced by: Asa Shirakura (Japanese)
- Boyish Short Hair: She's far more straightforward than the long-haired Fienna, and her hair is extremely short
- Butt-Monkey: Something silly or humiliating is slated to happen to her whenever she and Hartia go out in adventures...
- Magical Girl Warrior: As cute as she's skilled in offensive magic.
- Sarcastic Devotee: Yeah, she is Hartia's pupil, but she's among those who deal the snark the most to him. Then again he does make her put on silly fairy dresses...
- Tsundere: Fairly sweet to Majic, but has quite the short fuse to everyone else and specially to Hartia.
Shastanasi
- Voiced by: Yoshiko Okamoto (Japanese), Marcy Bannor (English)
- Empty Shell: After she is Out-Gambitted and curb stomped by Childman!Azalie, she is seen sitting on a chair and... well, just being there.
- Smug Snake: A very, very arrogant and irritating old woman who thinks she's far more skillful than she actually is.
Flameheart
- Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese), Ty Mayberry (English), Andrés Skoknic (LA-Spanish)
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas and Momma's Boy: And how. Flameheart was a mere Smug Super of sorts, but once Shastanasi was an Empty Shell, he went hell bent in revenge.
- Smug Snake: Just like his mother, he's arrogant as Hell and does not hav the charm and the magic to back it up.
Friends
Tristiny Everlasting
- Voiced by: Kazue Komiya (Japanese), Brianna Roberts (English)
- Apron Matron: She's a very motherly lady, and is almost always seen wearing an apron as she takes care of the Everlasting household.
- Armor-Piercing Question: She's the first one to actually ask Lycoris about her family, accidentally undoing her Fake Memories before it's time.
Mariabella Everlasting
- Voiced by: Satsuki Yukino (Japanese), Kelly Manison (English)
- Cool Big Sis: She is Claíomh's older sister.
- Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She has blonde hair and is also a Nice Girl.
- Nice Girl: Mariabella is one of the nicest people you would ever meet.
- The Ojou: Again, the Nice Girl type
Stephanie
- Voiced by: Sakiko Tamagawa (Japanese), Karen Coffer (English), Rosario Zamora (LA-Spanish)
- Bespectacled Cutie: A rather cute young lady whose glasses add to her charm.
- Deal with the Devil: Had to do one against her will, with a demon who wanted to kill Orphen and threatened her with destroying her town if she didn't "help". Orphen notices and tries helping her to get free.
- Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Her boyfriend Tim is a Nice Guy from her hometown.
- Team Mom: She was Orphen's first companion, and she actually sorta coaches Claíomh on how to take the torch as such.
Lycoris Nielsen
- Voiced by: Tomoko Kawakami (Japanese), Luci Christian (English), Keyros Guillén (LA-Spanish)
- Break the Cutie: The poor girl is completely dragged through the mud towards the end of the TV series.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: She is a clumsy girl.
- Driven to Suicide: Twice. First, when she realizes she's been Dead All Along. Second, to stop her family and friends from fighting to death.
- Fake Memories: Escalena wiped out her memories after her first suicide attempt, then sent her out with fake ones of being an orphan and a membress of the Royal Cavalry. Esperanza must periodically play a magical song to keep the charade, and when Orphen stops her from doing that and Tristiny poses her a well-intentioned Armor-Piercing Question, Lycoris remembers what happened and almost shatters.
Fienna
- Voiced by: Yui Horie (Japanese), Kira Vincent-Davis (credited as Kira Maltezos) (English), Keyros Guillén (LA-Spanish)
- Back from the Dead: The Dragon God once found her corpse, then decided to revive her so she'd be his medium
- Heroic Sacrifice: To save Orphen, his friends, and her village.
- Friend to All Living Things: As the medium and priestess for a Dragon God.
- Mark of the Beast: Has one on her chest which symbolizes the pact with the Deep Dragon.
- Silk Hiding Steel: A sweet and softspoken little girl... who actually manages to save Orphen from a really pissed off Deep Dragon's attacks.
- Star-Crossed Lovers: She and Majic, since she can't leave her village or she will die.
Enemies
Bloody August
- Eldritch Abomination: More so in the original anime, as the reboot gives her a much more conventional dragon-like design. It was meant to reflect the sword of Baldander's ability to transform those cut by it according to its wielder's intent going haywire when Azalie tried using it on herself and the intense pain made her lose focus.
- Was Once a Man: Or rather woman, specifically Azalie. And later, Childman.
Escalena / Erukarena
- Always Someone Better: She's this to all magic users in the world.
- Big Bad: Of Revenge. It doesn't become clear until the final few episodes, but the show's Myth Arc wouldn't have happened if McGregor hadn't made a Deal with the Devil with her in order to save his daughters.
- Curbstomp Battle: Gives one to Orphen of all people, and does so while laughing and having fun. It's the only character in the entire series that Orphen couldn't even hope to defeat by any means
- Creepy Child: Despite actually being Really 700 Years Old, she has the appearance of a very creepy-looking little girl.
- Eldritch Abomination: Downplayed. Escalena isn't unlikable, she doesn't drive anyone insane and her morality is anything but blue and orange, but her true form is disturbingly out-of-the-ordinary compared to anything Orphen has ever fought; a monstrous, tentacled Ancient Evil powerful enough to annihilate the entire planet.
- Faux Affably Evil: She acts cute and cheery but in reality she's completely cold-hearted.
- Just Toying with Them: She really has fun fighting both Orphen and Mc Gregor in her child form as a magic user herself. Even when it seems that they achieve to get the edge in battle and deliver her a fatal blow, it was just a trap
- Nigh-Invulnerability: Her huge physical size ensures that she can't be killed by anything short of a nuclear nuke, which needless to say doesn't exist in the series universe. She being a magical monster herself, ensures she can't be killed by offensive spells as she excels in both offensive and defensive magic.
- Perpetual Smiler: And when she doesn't smile... It's best to RUN.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Even The Celestial Beings themselves couldn't find a way to put her out for good, so they had to seal her.
- Would Hurt a Child: What Escalena puts innocent Cute Clumsy Girl Lycoris Neilsen through is twisted. She forces Lycoris' elder sister Esperanza to repeatedly edit her sister's memories, then directly tries to kill Lycoris after murdering Esperanza right in front of her eyes. It's made creepier by the fact Escalena herself, despite being anything but, looks like a little girl not much younger than Lycoris.
McGregor Nielsen
- Always Someone Better: to Orphen
- Awesomeness by Analysis
- Badass Book Worm
- Combat Pragmatist
- Papa Wolf: VERY dark take on this, as to save his daughters from death he makes a Deal with the Devil with Escalena.
- Tragic Villain: Never wanted to sacrifice any sorcerers to Escalena in the first place, but Escalena's got him trapped in a deal to save the lives of his two terminally ill daughters. When he learns Escalena never intended on keeping her promise and kills the older of his two children, he realizes all the death has been for nothing and gives his life to help put Escalena down.
Esperanza Nielsen
- Voiced by: Megumi Hayashibara (Japanese), Kelli Cousins (English; 1st voice), Tiffany Grant (English; 2nd voice), Maureen Herman (LA-Spanish)
- Broken Bird: Lampshaded by Claíomh, who compares to her to a bird with broken wings.
- Dark Magical Girl: A deeply wounded young woman who was utterly broken in her past, and now serves Escalena despite still being a kind person.
- Forceful Kiss: Kisses Orphen on the lips to taunt him. And to hide what she truly wanted.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How she died, stabbed through the chest with Escalena's roots.
- Knight Templar Big Sister: To her beloved Lycoris. She even admits it to Orphen and later to Claíomh.
- Love Makes You Evil: For her adored little sister, Esperanza would kill and die. And she does both.
- The Reveal: She was the girl who truly died, not Lycoris.
Flamesoul
- Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese); Chris Patton (English); Andrés Skoknic (LA-Spanish)
- Angsty Surviving Twin: The remaining brother of Flameheart, hellbent on revenge for the death of his family.
- Momma's Boy: Just like Flameheart, he is obsessed with his mother Shastanasi and VERY angry after her death and his brother's.
- Smug Snake: A very, very smug mage who's far less skilled than he thinks he is
- You Have Failed Me: At the receiving end, from Escalena herself.
Others
Volkan and Dortin
- Volkan voiced by: Kazue Ikura (1998 series), Marie Mizuno (2020 series) (Japanese); John Swasey ( 1998 tv series), Brittney Karbowski (2020 TV Series, English) Chris Cox (video game) (English); Viviana Navarro (LA-Spanish)
Dortin voiced by: Hekiru Shiina (1998 series), Mai Fuchigami (2020 series) (Japanese); Hilary Haag (1998 tv series), Apphia Yu (2020 TV Series, English), Debi Derryberry (video game) (English); Sara Pantoja (LA-Spanish)
- All Trolls Are Different: Their race. And well, Volkan tries to troll Orphen more than once. In truth, if they weren't explicitly called trolls in the story, one might either think of them as being dwarves or even a pair of exceedingly obnoxious and troublesome children.
- Bullying a Dragon: Somehow it never crosses Volkan's mind that antagonizing a powerful sorcerer he owes money to, and who, more importantly, doesn't like him, is a very bad idea.
- The Chew Toy: There is almost literally NO episode where these two don't get the shortest end of the stick, and it's almost always Played for Laughs.
- The Conscience: To Dortin's credit, he at least realizes when Volkan's schemes are going way too far, even if Volkan never listens to him and goes through with it anyways.
- Karmic Butt-Monkey: A lot of bad things tend to happen to Volkan and each and every time, it's the kind of punishment he's brought upon himself for all the trouble he stirs up.
- The Load: The number of times the two of them cause some kind of trouble for Orphen with their antics far outnumber any amount of times they contribute anything to help out Orphen and his friends.
- Opaque Nerd Glasses: Dortin wears these.
- Pet the Dog: They find an injured and almost dying Bloody August!Childman... and they actually befriend and take care of him.
- Sitcom Archnemesis: Volkan is not an actual villain in the series but he has an antagonistic relationship with the main character and always rubs Orphen the wrong way, with Orphen sometimes taking it out on Volkan in comically violent ways. The two never get along, always butt heads in petty squabbles, and Orphen always considers Volkan a pain in the ass to deal with.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Volkan "The Great"
