The following have their own pages:

Crossover
  • Digimon 3: Predator vs Digimon (Digimon & Predator): Parodied. Peter Chimaera is a well known writer of Troll Fics and is notorious for his intentionally inaccurate portrayals of the source material he writes fanfiction about. His first two Digimon stories, for example, erroneously used the name Digimon for a single character, rather than the collective term for multiple species of digital creatures, like it is in the original source. After a lot of complaints about this by people who did not realize the joke, Chimaera pretends he realized this mistake and retcons it in Digimon 3, saying the character Digimon belongs to a new species of Digimon he specifically created for his story.
Peter Chimaera: Auithors notel Digimon is a new Digimon because there is not actual Digimon that is called Digimon he is a new one that I invented
  • The Equestrian Wind Mage: A lot of readers' viewed the Equestrian villains getting the short end of the stick, the Zelda villains being the major threat with Ganondorf overpowering the Elements and Daring Do getting her flank kicked by the Church of Majora, and Vaati single-handedly dealing with all the major villains while the Mane Six barely did anything. Come Season 2, and not only do the Mane Six hold their weight, they're the ones to finish off nearly every boss monster including Demise himself. Lampshaded during that last example, when Twilight points out that they've been relying on him the whole time, but now that he's too exhausted to continue, they'll have to finish it themselves.
    • The same could be said for how he brought back Diamond Tiara. Originally, she came up with the plan to burn down the Cutie Mark Crusaders' clubhouse with them inside it herself without Dethl there to possess her, was disowned by her father, and was supposed to die when the Krylock bit her. However, following the backlash from many fans who felt he was too hard on her, he wrote the chapter that revealed that Diamond Tiara was turned into a Krylock by the venom, was released by Dethl, sicked on Ponyville, turned back to normal, and was revealed to have been possessed by Dethl when she committed her deed, rewriting the original chapter to include that. However, it seems apparent that the author doesn't like Diamond Tiara very much, and despite bringing her back, didn't go easy on her.
    • Admittedly, when she comes back the SECOND time, it's somewhat of a Moment of Awesome, as she arrives to tell Zelda to head for the Silent Realm in order to awaken the Guardians, having been given a steampunk makeover.
  • Infinity Crisis:
    • Chapter 4 had a bit where Shuri tells Tony Stark she built a suit of armor just like his in her room when she was just 5 years old. After some reader complaints of that being too much, it was amended with a line later in the chapter of Shuri admitting she was just trolling Tony.
    • The first chapter of Tomorrow's Guardians had Alara on the crew of the Orville. Right after publication, the character was written out when the actress left the show. It was thus altered to replace Alara with the character of Talla.
    • After she's split off from Lena Luthor, Morgan Le Fay is shown in Counterpart Conferences to have altered her appearance to now look like Elizabeth Hurley as Morgan in the Runaways (2017) show.
    • It had been said that the Sara of Earth-2 died with her Oliver on the yacht sinking. Then the Arrow series had Black Siren revealing she was still alive. In Tomorrow's Guardians, it's explained by Black Siren admitting that her Sara survived but they had a falling-out and thus easier to think she was dead.
    • Legacy of Lightning initially established that Smallville took place on Earth-21; later revelations in Crisis on Infinite Earths (2019) prompted Weyer to change the number to Earth-167, albeit making it clear that this version won't have Clark losing his powers.
    • Salvation Run reveals that Felicity was replaced by the Skrull Lyja around the time Oliver first faced Ra's al Ghul, justifying her more ruthless actions after that point.
    • In Generation Gaps, Hope reveals that the system that sent her and Scott to the quantum realm during the initial snap had a failsafe relay, allowing them to return to Earth after Hank and Janet were taken by the Snap whereas canon saw Scott stuck in the Quantum Realm for five years/hours.
  • The Last Spartan: Humanity gave up Artificial Intelligence quickly and willingly after the First Contact War. Initially it seemed like a complete cave-in, but a Codex Entry at the end of Chapter 24 paints it as a long-drawn-out diplomatic/legal process that climaxed with an incident with a rogue AI infiltrating the Citadel itself.
    • In addition, it's noted that A.I.s are still common among humans living outside of Citadel law and influence or working for ONI.
    • One of the stated goals of humanity and the former covenant races is that if they get a council seat, they're going to bring back Slipspace and AI technology.
    • On a meta level, the author has noticed that as the fic's popularity rises, he has gotten a wave of new reviews criticizing some of the content of the first chapters and plans to remedy this by removing a few Codex Entries containing already existing saving throws to said chapters to placate new readers long enough to keep them reading.
    • To a smaller degree, he points out later on that though he classified Mgalekgolo as dextro-amino creatures initially, it was because he mistakenly assumed that "Dextro-Amino" meant "eats rocks." He later apologized for this and added in that though they do eat rocks, they won't swell up and die if they eat Turian or Quarian food.
  • The Lightning Strike (Harry Potter & Marvel Cinematic Universe): The story includes a section where Wanda unintentionally ends up essentially "listening in" as Harry and Skye have sex. While the three involved swiftly talk about the incident the next day, with Harry and Skye forgiving Wanda as they understand that she didn't do it on purpose, some reviews expressed concern about the potential violation of privacy if Wanda can tap into the minds of just anyone around her during such intimate moments. The chapter was swiftly amended to include the detail that Wanda only sensed this particular encounter because Harry and Skye were in the room next door to her own (prior encounters in Skye's room were on the other side of the building from Wanda), so Wanda can avoid any serious issues by staying a certain distance from others until she has better control.
  • The Marvelous World Of DC: A major problem in the earlier chapters of The Marvelous World of DC is that Finmonster has a tendency to go into lengthy passages of exposition delivered about the character's backgrounds. Starting from Chapter 6, "Trial By Fire", such exposition is ditched entirely.
  • My Heroes Reborn (My Hero Academia & One Piece): During the Stain arc, the author added a Drama-Preserving Handicap to Izuku in the form of a subconscious mental block that prevented him from using his abilities as Sanji as a last-minute Ass Pull. The readership hated it immediately, due to a combination of Izuku's overpowered abilities being one of the draws of the story and the twist being seen as a cheap cop-out and poorly-written. As a result, she was forced to backtrack and promise to end the subplot as soon as feasibly possible.
  • My Ideal Academia: One of the moments most readers have been waiting for is when Shirou reveals his past to Yu, his adopted mother. However, it was done offscreen, to most of the readers' disappointment. Seeing this, the author decides to rewrite the scene.
  • Shadows over Meridian (Jackie Chan Adventures & W.I.T.C.H.): After several readers complained about how unlikable Caleb was being made by his characterization as a Knight Templar, Chapter 11 gives him several Freudian Excuses for his behavior — most prominently, the fact that his hopes of ending the war and being able to retire to a normal life with Cornelia have been dashed by the Knights of Vengeance and Jade/Kage's actions, as well as the revelation that everything the Rebellion sacrificed was just part of Nerissa's master plan, all of which is pushing him to his emotional and mental breaking point.
  • Yugioh EQG (My Little Pony: Equestria Girls & Yu-Gi-Oh!): Several readers disliked how during Applejack and Soarin’s duel Rainbow cheered for Applejack instead of Soarin, her own teammate, especially people who shipped the two of them. They also thought it was a bit harsh for her to say she doesn’t want him to think he was on her level when he had been trying to improve just to impress her and give her the kind of duel Flash could. During the last chapter, Rainbow calls Soarin the best partner she could ask for, and apologizes for what she said during his duel with Applejack, explaining she just didn’t want him to get cocky. Soarin says he figured that and says that probably would have happened if he won, which would have made him crushed when he eventually lost again. This was much better received.
  • YuYuGiDigiMoon:
    • Most of the Season Trilogy stories have a lot of lengthy chapters, which causes the author to be tired while working their outlines. He has promise that stories starting with Neos United will be more concise and realistic.
    • Beforehand, the decision of crossovering Digimon Fusion Kai (and Digimon Accel Stream) is the best choice to expand ideas of dimension travelling.
    • Shin-YuYuGiDigiMoon: In general, the use of proper canon concepts instead of the overreliance of AU concepts serves as a better way to give YYGDM a second chance to new and general readers.
      • Back in the original, the GX cast are secondary characters. Here, they finally become major characters.
      • Ghidorah finally has a proper defeat from the heroes unlike the original version who was killed by Yami Houou.

Fusion Fic

  • When the Cold Wind is a Callin': A minor complaint about The Dragon and the Bow was that Hiccup and Merida's romance felt a little rushed, especially given that she tried to kill him the first time they met, which you'd think would put him off falling in love with her. Here, Hiccup, while trying to convince Merida not to kill Jack Frost, tells her that her actions were Forgiven, but Not Forgotten, and that the only reason their romance progressed as far as it did is because Hiccup refused to try killing Merida in retaliation.

Harry Potter

  • A common complaint about Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness is that the Cruciatus Curse is demoted from being a nightmarish torture to the equivalent of flogging — the students take to bragging about how often they get cruciated. Thanfiction wrote a scene in Chapter 21 of the first story where Neville, facing Bellatrix, gets hit with the curse — and thinks to himself, just before he whites out from the pain, that the Carrows never did a proper one.

The Loud House

  • Stories and Tales from Dimension 63: Either this or Take That, Scrappy!, but Linka being forced to change just like Lincoln when she's shown back in chapter 16 can be seen as this, considering that the earlier chapters didn't exactly make her look like a likable character.
    • The revelation about what happened to Linka (and Lane and Lars) was probably intended to do this, but how effective it was is up to you.
    • If you were getting tired of the bros not seeing the truth about Linka, or being in denial, chapter 20 has Luke, Lars and Loki discover the truth by visiting the girl herself, and are left broken when she states she doesn't want to come home.
  • What is a Person Worth?: In Chapter 22, Lynn calls Ronnie out for not just buying the Frame-Up of Lincoln for supposedly seeing Cristina behind her back but also her brand of "affection", even having a moment where she admits that she's been screwing up her relationship with Lincoln long before the events of "No Such Luck" by ignoring the fact that he wasn't enjoying their "playtime" like she was.

My Little Pony

  • Aftermath of the Games was criticized over Twilight defeating the villainous Starlight Glimmer by Ret Goneing her via adopting her younger self and taking her away to the future, which lead to an Esoteric Happy Ending. The sequel, Integration, addressed some concerns the fans had by using an interlude chapter to flashback to the event in question. It shows that Twilight did offer Starlight the same chance of redemption that she got in canon, but she refused and became even more dangerous, meaning that Twilight really DID have no other choice. Also, despite her friends, brother, and fellow princesses being extremely supportive of her decision and believing that it was necessary in those circumstances, Twilight is haunted by what she did, feeling like she had purposely murdered the original Starlight, which combined with her being fully aware of the possible ramifications of altering the timeline meant she felt undeserving to be filly Starlight's adoptive mom.
  • In The Elements of Friendship, a big complaint about Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy's relationship in Book 1 is that it pretty much comes out of nowhere — the first time we even realize they're a couple, they're announcing their engagement. Book IS (1.5) rectifies this by having the pair realize they were acting out of fear of NightMare Moon's conquest of Equestria and jumped the gun, and they ultimately decide they're better off as Just Friends.
  • The Flash Sentry Chronicles:
    • Readers complained about how Applejack spent much of the series as being Out of Focus due to not having many of her episodes adapted. "The Quest for the Golden Apple", helped mitigate this, by having her be the focus of the chapter, and by giving her some Ship Tease with the new character, Rogue.
    • Some readers accused Hiveena of taking away Thorax's uniqueness and his role in the fic. In the re-write of "To Where and Back Again Part 2", Hiveena made it clear that Thorax is proof for the evolution of Changelings and felt he is a better choice to lead the Changelings than herself since he was able to evolve into his true form on his own, when she would have needed to take her place on the throne to do it.
    • Many readers were annoyed with Fire Heart throughout Dragon's Awakening, since he constantly ignored direct orders from Flash and Twilight and rushed into battle against the dragons without a plan, only to make the situation worse for himself and his friends. It was very satisfying when his actions caught up to him in the end, and he was grounded and punished by Flash.
  • Loved and Lost:
    • While the story progressed, some commenters complained about Twilight's negative change in character. Disturbed by this, the author worked on the chapters dealing with the extra details about how that started because of Jewelius as well as Twilight's Jerkass Realization and subsequent reconciliations with her loved ones.
    • In the original version of the fic, the entire Royal Guard did side with Jewelius during his coup, serving him all the way down to the attack on Ponyville. This case of Adaptational Villainy wasn't appreciated by everyone, so the author afterwards added the scene in which one guard joins Lieutenant Shackle in questioning the morality of the attack on Ponyville, only for Jewelius to kill him in response. Eventually the author rewrote a couple of chapters, making it so that most of the guards were injured by the Changelings yet remained loyal to the dismantled princesses, so Jewelius ordered these injured loyalists to be murdered as casualties of the invasion and afterwards hired bribed convicts to replace them.
  • Quiververse
    • A Shimmering New Year was meant to be this after critical reception brought up flaws in Wherever You Find Love. Further edits to the former story, however, led to one of the epilogues for Many Happy Reunions being written to address issues raised there.
    • When the first version of the Vignette for Luna Eclipsed was met with similar reception, a new one was written to take its place.
  • Triptych Continuum: In Luna's Lottery Lunacy, it is stated that the Lunar Courtyard exists under a illusory total solar eclipse during the day. The problem, of course, is that under Equestria's cosmology Sun and Moon are never naturally in the sky at the same time, and as such a solar eclipse will never occur without someone going to great effort to specifically arrange it. In response, A Total Eclipse Of The Fun establishes that the Diarchs witnessed eclipses during the Discordant Era and revolves around Celestia and Princess Luna arranging a solar eclipse in celebration of the one-year anniversary of Princess Luna's Return.

Naruto

  • True Potential:
    • Prior to Chapter 27, several readers complained that Naruto was too weak as a result of relying on the Kyūbi too much. DryBonesKing acknowledged the complaints in the Author's Note at the end of Chapter 27 and decided, in regards to Naruto's fight in that chapter, to remove a few elements of the fight where Naruto would have used the demon's chakra to show how he can fight on his own.
    • When Chapter 55 was first published, Naruto initially let go of Hidan's head following their fight during said chapter. Many readers complained over how stupid it was that he didn't bring Hidan's head back to Konoha instead. Recognizing his mistake, the author updated the chapter about one week later. In the updated version, Naruto attempts to bring Hidan's head back to Konoha by sealing it inside a scroll, but Zetsu intervenes and prevents him from doing so.

Pokémon

  • Pokémon Reset Bloodlines: Chapter 30 is one for the handling of the Cerulean Sisters: several commentators found their treatment by the author to be unusually harsh for the fic, which generally avoids nearing bashing territories for characters a lot more maligned than they are. Many were pleasantly surprised to see the Eevee Brothers, who are similar to the sisters in canon behavior, treated not only well, but made more sympathetic than their canon selves, up to and including their treatment of Mikey and their reasons for being pushy about evolution.
    • The same chapter also has one for the fic's tendency to slip too long: the author noted this and split the chapter in progress up early as to prevent another long gap while the chapter was made after the author noted it was getting notably long due to the Eevee Bros. adaption.

Supernatural

  • The [Emma] Winchester Chronicles: The story opens with Dean having brought his Amazon daughter Emma back to life after his time in Purgatory, despite the fact that Sam killed her. After spending a year getting to know each other again, when Emma has helped Sam bring his kitsune friend Amy back to life, she explicitly asks him why he killed her, and Sam admits that he was driven to do so by the hallucination of Lucifer he was dealing with back then, but after such moments as talking with Henry and Bobby about his actions, he now fully accepts Emma as his niece and part of the family.

Total Drama

  • Total Drama: Superstar Showdown: When Helga was abruptly eliminated one chapter after her relationship with Wolfgang started, readers were not happy. Because of that, the author made sure to give Helga loads of spotlight in the losers chapter, as well as a major appearance in both parts of the finale, wrapping up her plot with Wolfgang nicely.

Transformers

  • Transformers Animated Season 4: "The Machine Churian Candidate" was a non-musical episode written by the creator to replace the lackluster "Sound of Music" musical version.

Unsorted

  • Ages of Shadow: Partway through the Third Age portion of the story, Mildred ends up getting her eyes gouged out. Fan complaints about this weren't so much about the event in question as they were the fact that it's mostly glazed over, with very little direct reaction to it. Later chapters responded by having characters discuss it, and even giving Mildred a subplot wherein she learns to use shadow magic to compensate for the lack of eyesight.
  • The Many Dates of Danny Fenton features alternate endings and snippets where Danny chooses a different girl. That way, readers who want Danny with a different girl will get their wish.
  • Attempted several times in My Immortal (a Harry Potter fanfiction) but pretty much everyone agrees that the author, Tara Gilesbie, failed miserably and the fanfic is still infamous for its bad writing:
    • In the chapter that introduces Dumbledore, he swears loudly at Ebony and Draco for having sex in the forest. Tara has tried to explain this Out of Character behaviour by saying that he had a headache and was trying to be goth. Everyone agreed, however, that it would take more than that for swearing loudly to be in-character and that trying to be goth is out-of-character in itself. Tara also tried to make him seem more in-character by describing him as doing things "wisely", including crying, which everyone thought was ridiculous.
    • Reviewers complained that Draco was out-of-character. Tara tried to fix this by having him accuse Ebony of being a muggle as an insult and tried to explain away his uncharacteristic behaviour as the result of him being in love with Ebony.
    • Reviewers complained about Tara making Snape and Lupin "pedophiles" (even though the only underage character they perved on was Ebony who's seventeen and in the UK, sixteen is the age of consent and in Harry Potter, seventeen is considered an adult), so she made Wormtail, or Snaketail as she called him, sixteen when he asked to have sex with her.
    • The reviewers were none too pleased with having Harry, Hermione, and Ron switch houses and so Tara claimed that it was because they'd become evil— which opened up another can of worms because Ebony is meant to be on the side of good despite being a goth, so why would she hang out with bad guys?
  • No Such Luck, No Such Love: One that stands out for most NSL Deconstruction Fics is that in those stories, the Louds took their superstition too far. But the Louds here except Lynn actually knew Lincoln was lying all along and his punishment outweighs his crime.
  • Nobody Dies had a particularly weak fourth season, and is generally considered the point where the fic's weaknesses were at their most evident. This eventually required the author to retcon almost the entire season into being a shared dream caused by one of the Angels. The problem was that, while the Saving Throw wasn't a full-blown Voodoo Shark, people still raged against it because it ended up eliminating what they did like about the season. This resulted in a Creator Breakdown and the story becoming dormant.
  • Readers of the Poké Wars story "The Subsistence" were baffled by Dawn's sudden prowess with guns, and most complained that it was an Ass Pull. Then Cornova wrote "The Incipience" and did some minor rewriting which better explained Dawn's sudden gain of Improbable Aiming Skills.
  • Spectacular Seven had its first volume go into dark territory really fast, and readership complaints were that the story was getting way too dark and depressing to keep reading with all of the angst it kept piling on top of Sunset Shimmer. Come Volume II, the Magical Girl aspects of the setting are played up much more, and the darker elements were pushed back. Sunset's struggles are far more external than internal, and the romance between Sunset and Twilight Sparkle gets a lot more screentime to balance out the plot. This all culminates with a Final Battle sequence and a "No More Holding Back" Speech from Sunset, making the angst part of some character development that Sunset ultimately learns from, grows past, and becomes better for.
  • Syngenesophobia:
    • The author opens Chapter 21 by stating that the events of the therapy sessions have actually only taken about 2 days of in-universe time, which is a reasonable length of time even if it's dragging from our perspective.
    • One of the common criticisms about the story is that the readers actually never saw the fallout of the girls' friends and acquaintances. However, there are some moments, such as Margo talking to Lynn. Recent chapters have rectified that by showing the girls confront their former friends, flashbacks showing the break up of their friendship, and more details are given on the break up of their friendship and the bullying the girls suffer.
      • Chapter 38 has Leni confronting Becky and Mandee about her fallout with them. Becky and Mandee both start to avoid Leni when they learn of the incident with her brother being hospitalized. Tired of being alone, Leni goes to talk to them; they were uncomfortable with her presence and lied, so they don't have to spend time with her. Leni, angry, confronts them on their lie, saying while she does deserve the cold shoulder, they could ask if she was ok instead of avoiding her. Becky and Mandee admit to Leni's point and say they were uncomfortable being around her for what she did to her brother. While they both see that Leni is remorseful for her actions, they say they can't forgive her right now unless her brother forgives her.
      • In Chapter 41, we see during a flashback the fallout between Lori and her friends, with Lori's friend Whitney at first comforting her when she was crying, only to become disgusted with Lori when she learns the full story. Whitney and the rest of Lori's friends unfriended her and started to bully her, only stopping because of a school assembly where the teachers had proof of their bullying and punish them.
  • The Pretty Cure fanfic Twilight Pretty Cure got significant backlash over the unintentional way the author treated some serious subjects. The author accepted the legitimacy of these concerns and set out to completely rewrite the story.
  • A preemptive case in the Miraculous Ladybug fanfic An Unexpected Revelation (NSFW). A major point in the story is a large school graduation ceremony, like the one the author had in Canada. She wrote a note well in advance that she doesn't know how they do this in France, and apologizes if it's not customary there. So when she was told that it is indeed a much quieter affair there, she simply added a plot point of Chloe getting her father to arrange a large, American-style ceremony, which is totally in character for her.
  • What If Raditz Turned Good?: After noticing Ranch had OP elements to her, MasakoX started having her more fail more, and made her more prone to error.
  • What Lies Beyond the Walls: After the first chunk of Book II, which featured at least three explicit rape scenes, a backstory dealing with parental abuse and incest, and the death of Tike Bonson, amongst other things, the author admitted that even he thought he went too far and was making the story too dark. The author then said he planned on toning down the characters' deaths and darkness, and backed up his statement with two Breather Episodes that don't even so much as kill off a Red Shirt.
  • Super Smash Bros fangames are no stranger to this trope, but PMEX REMIX certainly takes the cake.
    • The bombastic E3 orchestral rendition of "Lifelight" is well-loved in the fandom, but is completely absent from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the game it was written for. PMEX REMIX uses it as its Battlefield theme - and properly looped, to boot.
    • Lucina, a fighter not in Project M, raised some eyebrows in the official Smash games for her Moveset Clone status. The version of her used in PMEX REMIX is fully decloned from Marth and heavily inspired by her game of origin.
    • Multiple franchises that are poorly or inadequately represented in the official Smash games have heavier representation in REMIX.
      • The Final Fantasy content and representation are heavily beefed up from the official Smash games prior to Sephiroth's addition to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. An additional Final Fantasy VII stage has been added in the form of Planet's Core, and the remix of "Let The Battles Begin" used for the stage is a Smash worthy remix rather than the PS1 quality rip present in the real games. Not only is Cloud now fully voiced in English, but two additional Final Fantasy fighters have been added - his Arch-Nemesis Sephiroth, and protagonist of subsequent game Squall, the latter of which provides series representation outside of VII unlike the official games. In later builds (following Sephiroth's official inclusion in Smash), Seph himself was updated to his Ultimate moveset (still with his English voice), more stages and tracks from across the Final Fantasy series were added, and a fourth fighter was added — Zack Fair, as a semi-Moveset Clone of Cloud.
      • Sonic the Hedgehog is another franchise that's poorly represented in the official Smash games but is considerably beefed up in REMIX. The game not only keeps Sonic's much better-received Project M moveset and adds the formerly canceled Knuckles as a playable fighter, but boasts six playable fighters, note  a vast improvement from the official games' total of one, and also features a wider variety of stages that go beyond the Green Hill Zone aesthetic.
      • Dive into the Heart features tracks from across the Kingdom Hearts series and not just the original game as Hollow Bastion did in Ultimate. Sora's up taunt is now actually a Practical Taunt, with Cure, Aero and Stop actually having uses in battle.
    • Bowser finally uses his proper voiced sound clips by Kenny James instead of having the animalistic sounds he has in the official Smash games. Likewise, version 0.95b updated Pit's voice actor to Antony del Rio to keep him in line with his Kid Icarus: Uprising depiction to match Dark Pit and Palutena, despite him keeping his largely Brawl-derived Project M moveset.
    • While the Pokémon Trainer is one of the most beloved fighters in Ultimate, some Charizard mains from 3DS/Wii U were burned by their favorite character no longer being a standalone fighter. As with Project M, EX features Charizard along with Squirtle and Ivysaur as standalone fighters with more intricate movesets, all while bringing back most of the Ultimate cast and multiple newcomers so as to make less of a sacrifice in terms of roster size than PM and Project+.
