Find a Trope:
openDifferent healing in different places
When in a place Healing Hands are limited and bringing people Back From The Death is an very rare ability (while having the power itself is normal) whereas in another place Death Is Cheap and Healers are rare.
openNo One Can Deny
He may be selfish, arrogant jerk who wants nothing but fame and glory and is utterly condescending to everyone he meet, but nobody can deny that he has done a lot of good.
He might have saved that little boy from the burning building just because he want the public attention, but after all, he DID save that boy.
Edited by AndermannopenWeakhearted but Arrogant
Do we have a trope for someone who acts strong with the weak but weak with the strong? Like a manager who kisses the floor when in front of his boss but treats the workers like slaves?
openWhen the parents of the kids (MCs) don't like each other
The parents minimize that a problem is their child's fault and/or the fault of their own parenting and instead blame the parents of their children's friends.
I don't know if this is We ARE Struggling Together because they're not necessarily a team?
Examples:
In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Mr. Heffley thinks that Rowley is a bad influence on Greg, when the opposite is true. Meanwhile, Mr. Jefferson (correctly) thinks that Greg is a bad influence on Rowley.
In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, the parents of the gang don't like each other and view the gang as a bad influence on their child. The Blakes think that both Fred and Mayor Jones are idiots, Mayor Jones implicitly starts to view them as [[Upper Class Twit}}s when he learns of how they think of him, and the Rogers think that the other parents are neglectful for letting their kids run around and snooping.
openWay ahead of you
Alice goes to tell Bob something or ask him to do something for her — only to find that he already knows what she was gonna tell him or he already did what she was gonna ask him to.
openWe Do Anything Agency
We can help you clean your house, take care of your dog, play piano for your show, be your lawyer, take you out on a date or even be a party clown for your kid’s birthday.
Edited by AndermannopenHardship Tailored to the Flaw
Is there a trope for the inversion of Plot Tailored to the Party? i.e., a conflict that only exists so Mary Sue can, in a convoluted fashion, suffer for her Token Flaw?
I was reading The Simpsons' Radioactive Man specials, and he can never take off his hat - which means he's always getting invited to stuff where hats aren't allowed - but it usually means an Adorably Clumsy girl with a Fear Of Heights will find herself forced to walk on a tightrope or something.
openNot found in the map
When a town or island is mentioned to "not be found in the map or GPS".
Do we have something like that?
openJust As I Suspected
(Reading a document) “Mmhmm, mmhmm, umm huh... Just as I suspected.
I can’t not read this.”
openThe plot starts with the protagonist
The setting of the story has all the pieces of the plot set in place and ready for the story (e.g. the villain and his minions are set to initiate their evil plan). All they need now is for the protagonist to conveniently show up at the same exact time as the plot starts to make everything happen, even if only by virtue of just being there. Sometimes it makes the audience wonder, "Why did the villain wait so long to initiate their evil plan? They didn't know that the protagonist was coming, so what gives?"
Is there a trope for when the in-universe pieces of the plot only seem to get rolling when the protagonist enters the plot?
Examples:
In every Pokemon game, the villain team's plan seems to always coincide with the player beginning their journey.
In the first book in the Percy Jackson series, the quest is to retrieve an item that was stolen six months prior, and the protagonist (a twelve year old boy, mind you), who was only around for two weeks, only has ten days to do it, making the reader wonder why this wasn't taken care of before hand.
Edited by Namor21openKeeping a seemingly destroyed gift
For example, Alice gives Bob this nice badge that she made, but Bob says it’s worthless and throws it in the trash. Later on, we find out that Bob kept it all along.
openGoing solo means going "adult" Music
Do we have something for, when a musical act that's mainly known for singing wholesome music breaks up or a member leaves, one or more members start releasing music that's more adult in theme as a solo act? I'm thinking of Zayn from 1D and DNCE post-Jonas Brothers, but I know this is a fairly widespread thing.
openBadass Mook Film
I'm looking for a trope where a nameless, extremely skilled mook will fight the main character and the main character will be on the losing side for most of the fight until the main character pulls a dirty trick such as kick his nuts or a side character comes and kills the mook for him. An example would be the fight between the taser storm trooper and Finn from Rogue One.
openCorruption that occurs within the womb
Do we have something for when a baby or even an unborn child is corrupted into evil by some dark force.
I know we have The Corruption but was curious if there was something for more specific a scenario like this as I've seen it in fiction a few times.
Edited by miraculousopenHave I mentioned I'm human?
A character repeatedly mentions their "humanity" when they're really (or at least, were originally) something else.
- Alice: Of course! That makes sense! That's totally what a human like me would do. A totally normal, human girl.Bob: Uh, okay?
openParty Periphery
When an action occurs in the periphery of a festive event (party, ball, formal reception, festival...), the action being at least related to the event.
Some examples :
- Cinderella watching the castle from her room in the Disney movie, wanting to go to the ball
- Sneaking around Lady Boyle's party in the first Dishonored
- Two characters getting some fresh air on a balcony and getting to know each other
Edited by LjoturopenEating as an attack
An enemy, usually some sort of monster, tries to eat its enemies as an attack in a fight.
