Find a Trope:
opensome sort of interrupting Film
person 1 is about to tell person 2 something important, maybe even that will affect person 2 negatively. just as person 1 is about to say it, person 2 interrupts with some seemingly unrelated statement, then tells person 1 to go ahead and finish what they were about to say. however, person 1 realizes that what person 2 has said now prevents them from saying what they originally wanted to say, so they make something up for the moment.
openThe Cowboy Kid (SOLVED) Film
Is there a trope for characters (usually in westerns) being called "X the Kid" or "The X Kid", where X is either a distinctive piece of clothing, location, family, weapon, personal trademark or skill?
Edited by PisthetairosopenIdentity Trope? It's my identity... no it's mine! Film
What trope fits this scenario?
In a future Marvel Cinematic Universe film, there are two versions of The Punisher. In one scene, the Jon Bernthal version from the Netflix series appears alongside the new Punisher, played by Jim Caviezel, and says "I'M FRANK CASTLE, I'M THE PUNISHER!!", but Jim Caviezel's version insists he's the real deal. The argument degenerates into comedy, becoming a Crowning Moment Of Funny.
Casting Gag obviously applies to bring back the Jon Bernthal version.
It can't be Alternate Self, since they don't look alike and it's not Acting for Two; Collective Identity could fit, but probably doesn't apply in this situation, so what would be the trope for arguing over who's the real thing about an identity?
open"Dece-pitation" Film
A portmanteau of deception and decapitation. I've seen this in several media, but most commonly in live-action films, especially in horror.
A character appears to be resting or sitting somewhere, when another character starts to speak with them, only to jostle them and realize they're dead once their head falls off. I particularly remember this in the film Bless the Child.
Edited by VercalosopenBusiness woman learns to love. Film
I could have sworn that this was a trope, generally from 80's-00's films. Where the love interest or female protagonist is a hard working, no non-sense executive who tends to be a workaholic, learns to love again because of the guy; who tends to be a slob, underperforming, slackster emotionally-cognizant type.
Is this a trope or a subversion/inversion of an existing trope? I think this has happened in movies like What Women Want and The Proposal, maybe Intolerable Cruelty and Pretty Woman might be adjacent to this kind of thing??? I think even Family Guy made a reference to it.
openBecause First Movie Film
Is there a trope for when a sequel does something that was in its predecessor just because it was in the previous film? I suppose it could apply to TV seasons too.
openIt smells your fear Film
Basically, when a creature, particularly a non-sentient one, hunts for someone, and is able to locate them specifically because they're afraid, whether it's by a sense of smell or sensing fearful thoughts psionically.
Off the top of my head After Earth features this, with all the creatures on the planet being able to smell pheromones produced by fear, and also the film Oblivion (1994), which has an arm-wrestling match with the added challenge of an alien animal that attacks when it senses fear.
Edited by VercalosopenArk Destroying Nazis Trope Film
Aside from Laser-Guided Karma, what's the trope that wipes the Nazis out all at once at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? It's similar to Keystone Army, but it's not that.
[down]I meant when bad guys as destroyed all at once.
Edited by futuremoviewriteropenTwo Lesbian Universe Film
There are only two lesbians in the whole universe. Good thing they like each other right away! Often they help one another realize they are lesbians by falling in love and coming out together. It may end happily for the couple. If it ends badly, the more feminine lesbian will end up with a man, which means she's straight because there are No Bisexuals. The more butch lesbian will end up as a Psycho Lesbian. I have seen this in movies and books. Does it have an entry already?
openSimultaneous Takedown of Enemies Film
Which trope used by Phantom Menace, Marvel's The Avengers and Game of Thrones involved the destruction of a source of some kind which then took out all the enemies at once?
open"That was my last chance!" Film
Is there a trope named for when a down-on-their-luck character has their "last chance" at redemption stolen from them? Like when Brad Pitt's hitchhiker character steals Thelma and Louise's get-away cash?
openSequel where first film/game/other fiction is actually a fiction Film
I was thinking about a few examples where this happens, recently having watched the "Grave encounters" movies, and remembering reading it was the same kind of setup as in the second "human centipede" movie (though i haven't seen that one)
Anyway, it's pretty simple: when a sequel, spinoff, "spiritual successor" or whatnot is made following a work of fiction, but it doesn't occur in the same fictional universe: in that of the sequel/spinoff/etc, the first work is actually portrayed as what it is in real life, ie. a movie, game, tv show, etc. In both examples i noted above, the sequel is about someone who saw the first film and attempted to do something similar as depicted in it.
Is there a name for this trope?
Edited by deltopenSubverted Suicide Spaceship (SOLVED: SuicidalGotcha) Film
A character jumps out of a tall building or something, usually after a girl rejects him. The girl assumes he dies, but up he comes - standing atop a flying device of some sort, looking real badass.
To be honest, I think that's a reference to some movie I can't remember, but I've seen it parodied or homaged a few times.
Edited by PisthetairosopenEvent echo Film
An event near the end of a story that echoes a previous event from near the beginning in a dramatic way, sort of like a cross between meaningful echo and call-back where the characters find themselves doing something they had to do in the beginning but the task is now more urgent and difficult. The event or task is not necessarily the same as it was in the beginning, merely similar.
For instance, at the beginning of the story Alice and Bob go rowing to the island in the lake where they find a mcguffin which kick starts the events of the plot and leads to some sort of apocalyptic scenario. Then at the end of the story they have to again row to the island to deactivate the mcguffin and save the world, except the journey which was easy at the start is now filled with obstacles.
Edit: Not solely a film trope, I can't edit it to be neutral
Edited by Generic_name236openEditing induced plot hole Film
Is there a trope for when a film undergoes massive editing (usually to Bowdlerize), and they end up cutting out important scenes and causing Plot Holes (E.G a character disappears and is never seen again because their death scene was excised.)
openA clone of the gang Film
It's like this, there's a gang of protagonists, for example, a nerd, a cowboy and a girl. Then they cross paths with a group that's exactly the same. They even dress the same. It's common in comedy. Anyone remember the name of this trope?
open"Nut O Fun" Film
The website Jabootu.net uses the term "Nut O Fun" to refer to something in the background of a scene that proves more interesting than what we are supposed to be paying attention to (usually because the movie is really boring.) The main thing they assign the name to is a prop in the background on the second Exorcist movie that's some kind of styrofoam hexagonal wheel, although I've seen them and some other sites (such as And You Call Yourself A Scientist). use it to refer to other things. Is there a trope for it? The YMMV page for the Exorcist II mentions it as well as the name Jabootu gives to it but just lists it as an Ensemble Dark Horse despite it not being a character.
I was wondering if anyone can help me locate a specific Trope. The Trope i'm trying to find is similar to the 'Paper scissors rock' trope but more used in film. Example: In the show Gravity falls, the character, Mcgucket is immune to the mind eraser ray, however the same ray was used to defeat Bill Cipher, a powerful god like demon. One item is able to beat someone, but not someone else.
I've just been calling it the paper scissors rock trope. However looking though the tropes list, the Paper scissors rock trope is used more in video games then films, so I'm just trying to find the film equivalent. Thank you
