I was thinking about a few examples where this happens, recently having watched the "Grave encounters" movies, and remembering reading it was the same kind of setup as in the second "human centipede" movie (though i haven't seen that one)
Anyway, it's pretty simple: when a sequel, spinoff, "spiritual successor" or whatnot is made following a work of fiction, but it doesn't occur in the same fictional universe: in that of the sequel/spinoff/etc, the first work is actually portrayed as what it is in real life, ie. a movie, game, tv show, etc. In both examples i noted above, the sequel is about someone who saw the first film and attempted to do something similar as depicted in it.
Is there a name for this trope?
