Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Yeah that's just transphobic. You're not allowed to deadname people just because you don't like them.
Controversial figure or not, we should use preferred name and pronouns.
Edited by AppleChild CLUNK! (he died.)Seconded. Christine's uh. "Controversial" behavior is not and will never be an excuse to misgender her.
Stan GaruKaru for clear skinShould we also send a notifier to this person? I checked their edit history and so far, nothing weird came up aside from the edits to Vivian Gee's story.
Edited by YuriHaru567 Trans rights are human rights!Probably wouldn't hurt.
Jawbreakers on sale for 99¢Sent them a PM with a link to this thread. Hopefully they respond soon.
Trans rights are human rights!UPDATE: They seem to have ignored my PM and have continued with their current course of action.
Sent them yet another PM, this time for edit reason.
Edited by YuriHaru567 Trans rights are human rights!^ Probably for the best if they don't stop in anyway, people like this tend to have meltdowns.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIt's officially edit warring now, so I'd hold off re-reverting until a mod steps in. I'll send a notifier, but it doesn't seem like they care about that.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meI already reverted the edits (again). Sorry...
Trans rights are human rights! The only reason I said that is because the troper is liable to continue edit-warring their version in, so rather than have the back and forth, wait until the matter is dealt with.
I didn't choose the troping life, the troping life chose meNoted. Thanks for the advice for the next time this happens.
Trans rights are human rights!Hoota has been suspended for edit warring + their insistence to dead name and misgender Christine.
Edited by MacronNotes Macron's notesFYI, our policy on trans creators on Creator Page Guidelines (retroactively using their preferred name and pronouns) also applies elsewhere on the site.
Although reading through the page, it seems that this is a work that features Chris-Chan as a character and is not actually referring to the real life CWC. So if the novel/fanfic/whatever portrays Chris as a guy then shouldn't the work page reflect that?
Edited by AdeptThe novel may need some sort of review if supposed Gender Flip is actually a part of the work or a time artefact, and if the work is inline with all of the site's policies.
Edited by Amonimus TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupLooking at the DA page linked there, the author was last active in 2009 so CWC wouldn't have been Christine at the time the work was created.
^^^When I first saw this query I wondered that myself based on the one link I've seen (on the President Evil page; not really wanting to see the work page proper), but when I checked it again, it says the novel's actually about a No "Celebrities" Were Harmed expy of Chandler. So tropes for the work referring to that character as male is fine, but referring to the person he was based off of as male would still be misgendering, AFAIK.
Yeah, the novel seems to be an allegory based on pre-transition CWC, and it would be helpful to mention that somewhere. Perhaps in the Captain Ersatz entry? Something like "Christopher Winnfield Vega — of pre-transition Christine Weston Chandler, creator of Sonichu"
^Maybe we could try to sidestep the issue entirely by using Gender Neutral Writing? I've seen some people do that to avoid deadnaming and/or misgendering a transgender person when talking about their previous identity (for lack of a better word) is unavoidable.
I do not think this is such an unavoidable case. Christopher Winnfield Vega is a male fictional character. References to Christine Weston Chandler as a real-life female person are kept at a minimum in the page anyway due to flamebait nature of her internet presence.
Edited by AdannorOn a double-check of the page, there are several examples using Christine in reference to actions of Christopher. I'll go ahead and fix them.
I'm unfamiliar with whatever controversy went on that prompted this, but I think it's probably worth it to include an edit note about the deadnaming issue: to wit, this is a Real-Person Fic, creating a fictional character modeled after The Person Now Known IRL as Christine, as she identified at the time the work was created.
(And this is a reason I don't generally like Real-Person Fic.)
Edited by StarSwordI added this to the summary:
"In the year of 2009, Christine Weston Chandler (known then by her pre-transition name, Christian Weston Chandler)..."
Does this help?
Trans rights are human rights! No I do not think that bit in the description is needed. The deadname isn't relevant to the novel and the novel's character isn't even named Christian anyway.
Edited by AdannorThis isn't the first time we've dealt with a fictionalized version of Chris-chan. This discussion reminded me to clean up Player Two Start.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.^ Noted. Thanks.
Trans rights are human rights!
On the page for A Girl Who Brought Down the World, Hoota made the following edits, which seem to refer to her with her deadname and deadpronouns.
While I understand that Christine is already a controversial figure in more ways than one, I thought it right to refer to her using her preferred name and pronouns since the page for the Sonichu webcomic uses that name.
Should we continue to use the preferred name for Christine? I already reverted the edits this person made, but I'm still not entirely sure.
