Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup]Sundowner pic and keep All The Rest

Have an EP, based on one of the X-Men games

What's the work?

X-Men Origins Wolverine is a video game adaptation of the movie with the same name. Following the origin of how "Wolverine" came to be, it follows Logan, as he fights off the forces of William Stryker and tries to hunt down his brother, Victor Creed, for killing his wife. There are 5 versions of this game, the prime one (PS3, XBOX 360, PC version), PS2 and Wii version, Nintendo DS version, PSP version and mobile version. Each version retells the story with several differences and small details changed. I'm going to be talking about a version of a villain from PS2 and Wii version (as he is somewhat of a WIE in PSP and prime version and too generic in Nintendo DS and mobile version).

Enter - Colonel William Stryker.

Who is William Stryker?

An high ranking officer and a head of a scientific research facility in his own island, Stryker discovered several "gifted" individuals and decided to put them in military use, creating Team X and having them go on various military operations. Discovering an Adamantium from an African village, Stryker has his team go there, massacre all their militia and then tries to have his team torture people there for information. When Logan rebelled, unwilling to torture and kill innocent civilians, Stryker knocks him out and then orders the village to be annihilated, putting a beacon there and sending a nuke to obliterate the place. Logan managed to awake and get the beacon far away from the village, making the nuke fly towards him and blow him up, an injure from which he was capable to regenerate.

Later on Stryker manipulated Logan into becoming his subject for Weapon X program, by capturing Kayla Silverfox and forcing her to play the role of Logan's lover, while he himself experiments on many humans and turn them into mindless "brutes", who are so tortured by their existence that they thank Logan when he kills them during the gameplay (here how they look). Orchestrating the events to look like Victor killed Kayla, Stryker convinces Logan to allow to inject himself with Adamantium and then tries to kill him, noting that operation is a success and he can simply extract Logan's DNA for later experiments.

As Logan escapes the island, Stryker orders his forces to hunt him down and has one of the former members of Weapon X, David North aka Agent Zero, to hunt him down, killing a peaceful old couple, Hudsons, who have taken Logan in.

Kidnapping a lot of mutant children for his experiments, Stryker manages to capture Logan, after he arrived on his island, by revealing his the true role of Kayla and offering to erase his memories to help him, only to then goes back on his word and openly announcing that he plans to kill him anyway and then orders to imprison Kayla, instructing his troops to kill her if she resists. As Logan breaks from restrains, he helps Kayla to free mutant children, while he himself goes after Stryker, only encountering another former member of Team X, mutated Wade Wilson, who was turned into "Deadpool", the ultimate mutant hunter. Killing him, Logan sees injured Kayla and tries to help her, only to be shot with Adamantium bullet by Stryker, who then attempts to finish him off, only for Kayla to take over his mind and order him to go North until his feet bleed.

Heinousness?

Although kidnapping and attempting to experiment on mutant children are somewhat of Offscreen Villainy, due to us never seeing these children, everything else, from trying to destroy the village and torturing its population to the results of his experiments on humans are on plain site and is more than enough to make him stand out. He is the main bad guy of the game, so he set the standard, as everyone else works for him one way or the other.

Mitigating Qualities?

Unlike other versions, no, no physical or any other evidence, suggesting that he cares about humanity and wants to protect humans from mutant danger exist in this version, no audio logs where he explains his reasons, the only thing that is shown and confirmed is that Stryker simply wants to create the ultimate weapon and kill the mutants for no other reason than scientific curiosity and power.

Conclusion?

I will say Yes.

Weary [tup] Stryker.

Vindsvept, Fanatasy Music is a Youtube channel whose videos revolve around - well fantasy music - sometimes played over a reading of a fantasy themed story in the form of a poem or song.

One such story tells of a kingdom that was taken over by a wicked sorcerer known as the Scarlet King. And no, he's not that Scarlet King. Insofar as I can tell the two characters are unrelated and there's a chance that the writer didn't know of the SCP character when he wrote this.

Who is he ? What does he do ?

The story is told from the perspective of a sage and prophet who spends about a minute describing how beautiful and prosperous his kingdom is. That is until he shows up. The sage refuses to give this monster a name, but a power dark sorcerer appears on the scene and reduces a city to ashes. Later on, an army of a thousand men march to face him, and he proceed to wipe them all out single handedly, being described as a a god or force of nature. The sorcerer eventually kills the king, his family, and takes his blood stained crown, declaring himself the Scarlet King.

From then on, the Scarlet King proceeds to raze the kingdom in fire, and make slaves of his people, occasionally taking them as sacrifices to fuel his black magic. One day, the Sage has a vision that prophesies the coming of a great hero, who would overthrow the Scarlet King. The sage picks out a boy, who is raised and groomed to be an idealized hero. When the time came to face the Scarlet King, the latter struck the hero down. The Sage tells of how the Scarlet King made a bargain with him to sell out the hero in exchange for the Sage's families safety, and the Sage accepted the deal. The Sage reveals to us that he in fact deliberately overlooked the actual chosen one to use a decoy. The actual chosen one is still out there, presumably growing an army of his own, and the Sage notes that he'll probably be killed by the actual hero for his treachery.

Redeeming Qualities or Freudian Excuse ?

Zero.

Heinous Standard

Only villain; is a vicious tyrant who slaughters thousands of people, enslaves the rest, uses some in dark magic rituals and continuously burns his kingdom.

Based on the EP, [tup] to Stryker. That's seven for the X-Men Franchise now. Not even sure New Mutants will even still be considered a part of it when it comes out at this point.

EDIT: We get an eighth, maybe we can finally make that page.

Started on the Counseling Thread yesterday to try to manage myself on this website better. Gonna go there often now.

Btw one I'm handing out the book. Sherlock Holmes and the plague of dracula.

Drac probably counts. It's pretty close to the original albeit with enough changes to probably warrant a new entry (Drac is a child Serial Killer here, he tries to vamp and murder watsons wife, mutilated lucy). Thing is its uh not really one I'm not attached too. He's also only in one scence in person near the middle but his crimes are onstage. So anyone want it ?

Striker's writeup:

X-Men Origins Wolverine (PS2 and Wii version): William Stryker is a high ranking officer within US army and the head of Weapon X project. Having assembled the team of mutants in the past, Stryker uses them to complete his own personal operations, at one point ordering them to massacre the militia within an African village and then tries to torture information from innocent civilians there about the Adamantium that located within the area. When Logan rebelled against him, Stryker knocked him out and then tried to obliterate the village and all civilians there with a nuke. In the present, manipulating Logan to become his subject in Weapon X program, Stryker experiments on countless humans, transforming them into his mindless brutes, who suffer so much, that they thank the Logan for killing them.

Alright, just finished watching The Kid Who Would Be King. So, thoughts on Morgana?

Well, she has no redeeming qualities, she sends her undead warriors loose to kill the child protagonists throughout the film, in the climax she has her army attack an entire school of children, and Merlin's vision of her victory depicts the entire town set aflame and its residents turned to slaves. Pretty nasty.

However, the issue is....Morgana is sort of a case of a villain who sounds bad on-paper, but in-story, is subject to the fact that she's in a PG-rated kids movie that has to tone down the darker elements. The child protagonists never really get hurt when being pursued by her undead minions, that's a given, but even at the end, when there's a full-blown battle sequence between her undead, skeletal armies and a school of children led by a child, it's mostly the kids curb-stomping her minions in comedic fashion while suffering no real damage themselves. At the end, she transforms into a fire-breathing dragon that is shooting fire at said children, but even then, she's not causing as much damage as she really could, mostly being confined to the kids on the school rooftops. There is that whole vision by Merlin, but even then, I doubt that's enough.

So, yeah. If this weren't a kids film that had to tone it down in order to keep its rating, she'd probably count. But it is, so it's not going to depict kids being set on fire or cut down by zombie warriors, so Morgana can't really be as viscerally bad as she could. So, she's a [tdown] in my book.

Why so serious?
