Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sky, if I'm being honest? Cut down on suggesting images. Like, seriously. Most of the time they're not up to par and we've repeatedly demonstrated our distaste for constantly bringing them up in lieu of other things we can talk about. We don't need a million images.

Part of me is against that because I really don't see why the fuss about selecting images would warrant a separate discussion thread on its own.

Honestly, I don't think a forum for images is warranted. Pictures are often too hard to really illustrate what's going on without much foreknowledge. Or sometimes, they would have the bad guy commit generic actions like holding a gun or knife while looking intimidating.

[tdown]Image thread. Just like with the quotes, I don't understand why images are something that needs obsessing over. I mean, sure, they can be a fun topic if brought up a month or so, but every couple days?

@Scraggle, I should clarify something here:

I want to make VALUABLE contributions to the thread. If my image suggestions are worthless, then maybe I should stick to tweaking entries, something I AM actually good at.

It's not like I am trying to spam this forum. I thought I was actually getting better at Image selection, if the number of images that have been approved are any indication. That said, I feel like I have become too complacent in that regard, and as thus I should take a break from image selection. Nobody is questioning your valid concern.

All said and done, I am willing to refrain from image selection for a while.

Also, no fucking way do we need an image selection thread. You are right, images should be a once in a while thing.

I'd normally wait longer before providing a write-up, but as I need to return the books soon, here's a preliminary write-up prepared.

  • The Goblin Wars, by Kersten Hamilton: Fear Doirich, the Dark Man, is the god of the goblins. Having created goblin-kind by cobbling together creatures from different worlds, Doirich led them in invading Ireland and, upon being driven into Mag Mell by the Fire Bolg and Milesians, sealed the gateway, forcing the Fire Bolg to travel aimlessly without a home. Seeking vengeance against Amergin, the Milesian responsible for his imprisonment, Doirich kidnapped, tortured, and killed him and his Highborn lover Maeve, sparing their daughters Aileen and Roisin with the intent of forcibly breeding a new race bent to his foul will. As per a blood covenant with a cruel rich man seeking vengance against a traveler, Cumhaill, for running away with his daughter, Doirich cursed the lovers and their ancestors to be hunted by goblins for all eternity. Having Aileen killed, Doirich thus seeks to subjugate her daughter Teagan and kill Teagan's young brother Aiden, having his goblins torment and kill their loved ones along the way.

Galiel from The New Adventures of Ocean Girl

The Show: Oceana is a water world ruled by King Nemon and his adopted niece, Princess Neri. Along with their race (which can survive on land and under the sea) the planet is also inhabited by three other sapient species; the Cave Dwellers, led by Laziah, the Flyers, led by Shema, and the Amphibians, led by Zardor. These three clans are descended from the refugees that fled from three different planets that were razed by Galiel. Three years prior to the events of the series, Princess Neri left for Earth, and in the first episode, she and her dog-like droid Micro return to Oceana, escorted by their Cave Dweller friend, Neanda.

Despite what the name may imply, the show was not a continuation of the 1994 live-action series Ocean Girl.

Who They Are: An ancient space wizard, Galiel is obsessed with acquiring eternal life and ultimate power, and 2,000 years ago he visited Oceana, stealing one of its four magic life-giving crystals that were guarded by the wise whale Mandrool. With the crystal gone, the planet's polar ice caps melted, which led to the deaths of all but one of its native Griffins. Galiel, his abilities enhanced and his life prolonged by the crystal, spent the proceeding centuries traversing the universe, searching for more power and decimating everyone in his wake, including the Emperor of Bandor, a planet which he left in ruins after executing the Emperor in front of his son, Prince Jobah. Galiel's servants include Elgar, Moza, and the Warrior. The Warrior is little more than a machine; Galiel seduced Elgar into serving him (he doesn't actually care about her, and his promises of sharing eternal life with her are hollow); and Moza's home world was destroyed by Galiel, who only spared the infant Moza so that he could be raised to serve him (Moza is unaware of this, convinced that Galiel saved him from his doomed planet).

Being away from its home planet and the other three crystals for so long eventually caused Galiel's crystal's power to begin to wane; this results in Galiel's age catching up with him, and he is reduced to an emaciated state, hooked up to his crystal by umbilical cord-like connectors within his meteor-like spaceship, where he resides until the final episode of the series. While initially capable of doing things like creating natural disasters, as the show progresses, Galiel gets weaker and weaker, with his abilities being reduced to possession, astral projection, telepathic spying, and short-range electrical blasts (which he uses to defend himself and torment his lackeys).

What They Do:

  • 1. Arriving on Oceana in his meteor, Galiel announces his presence by terrorizing the Amphibians, Cave Dwellers and Flyers with natural disasters like lightning storms, tidal waves, and earthquakes. By spying on an audience that the clan leaders hold with King Nemon, Galiel becomes aware of Princess Neri, and the clan leaders' belief that she is the prophesied Promised One who will defeat him with wisdom gleaned from Mandrool. Galiel causes Neri's approaching space ship to crash land and, when that fails to kill her, he unleashes the Warrior to track down and deal with her, after having it use Moza as target practice as a test of Moza's loyalty. When the distraught Moza tries to desert after being blasted, Galiel pulls him back (and shocks him) with an energy beam, and forces him back into servitude. After the Warrior is defeated by Prince Jobah, who requests to see Nemon, Galiel possesses Nemon.
  • 2. Posing as Nemon, Galiel has Jobah imprisoned, and manipulates Neri into visiting Mandrool to ask about the locations of the remaining three crystals under the pretense of protecting them from Galiel. When Neri comes back empty handed, the annoyed Galiel vacates Nemon and once again unleashes the Warrior (which he has test its new weapon on Moza) to deal with Neri, convinced that Mandrool telling her nothing of significance means that she is useless. Neri escapes with the freed Jobah.
  • 3. Neri is believed to have perished while helping Jobah escape. Galiel takes Nemon over again, calls off the searches for Neri, prematurely ends the mourning period for her, and orders the clan leaders to focus entirely on locating the crystals. When the Amphibians report that they have found Neri and Jobah, Galiel, who has branded them fugitives and Neri a traitor, demands that they be brought directly to him.
  • 4. Neri and Jobah break out of Amphibian custody and regroup with Neanda, who takes them to Laziah. Laziah's territory is protected from Galiel's mystical sight, which enrages Galiel, and prompts him into taking his frustrations out on Elgar and Moza, electrocuting them both. Realizing that Neri cares about Jobah, Galiel has the Warrior abduct him while Neri is visiting Mandrool.
  • 5/6. Convinced that he knows Jobah, Galiel tries to force him to talk by causing a rock slide that endangers Neri and Neanda. Eventually recognizing Jobah, Galiel mocks him over his father's death and Bandor being left in ruin, and deduces that he traveled to Oceana to get the crystals to try and save his people and the dying Bandor. To screw with Elgar and Moza, Galiel makes it look like Jobah has escaped and threatens to jettison them into space for allowing that to happen, but then he drops the charade and attempts to spy on Neri. Neri succeeds in fending off Galiel's telepathic sight, leaving him unable to observe her from afar any longer, and as Galiel is recovering from the battle of wills, Jobah escapes after making a failed attempt on Galiel's life.
  • 7/8/9/10. As Galiel recuperates, he sends Elgar and Moza out to recapture Jobah and find Neri. Neri is given one of the crystals by the Griffin who was guarding it, but she loses it to Elgar and Moza, who in turn lose it to Jobah. Galiel takes over Nemon again, and sends his forces out to hunt down Neri and Jobah. When Neri returns the crystal to Mandrool, Galiel's spirit tries to force its way into Mandrool's sacred cave, but it is barred from entry. Upon returning to his body, Galiel shocks Moza in a rage, and then decides to possess Nemon and use him to demolish the royal palace and kill all of Neri's allies there as a means of demoralizing her, but with Neri's encouragement, Nemon is able to permanently excise Galiel from his body.
  • 11. Jobah was poisoned by a fish while being arrested by Nemon's men, and while he is weak, Galiel is able to temporarily possess him, and learn from Neri where another one of the crystals is. While Neri goes off to get an antidote for Jobah, Galiel sends Elgar and Moza out to get the crystal after electrocuting them for annoying him and making it clear to them that if he dies due to his crystal running out of power, he'll be sure to take them with him.
  • 14. Elgar and Moza are trapped by the giant blind mole that guards the crystal, and beg Galiel for help. He considers letting the mole eat both or just one of them, but then reluctantly admits that he still needs them and that he can't risk anyone else getting the crystal, so he tries to possess the mole, who fights him off with the help of Neri. The mole gives Neri the crystal as thanks for saving him, and she convinces him to spare Elgar and Moza.
  • 15. Galiel, becoming impatient, tells Elgar and Moza that, unless they get the crystal soon, he will exile them to a volcanic asteroid "that's so hot your feet will melt when you touch the ground." Galiel's spirit then tries to steal sacred texts about the Promised One from Laziah, but he's forced into a retreat by Laziah, Neanda and the rest of the Cave Dwellers. Elgar and Moza seemingly steal the crystal from Neri, but it turns out that all they got was a rock; Galiel electrocutes them for their failure.
  • 16. Taking a break from torturing Elgar and Moza, Galiel makes another failed attempt at breaching Mandrool's cave, blasting Micro in the process. Deciding to wipe all of his enemies out at once, Galiel has Elgar construct a magical bomb, which he has Moza deliver to the palace, browbeating him into doing it by reminding Moza of how he had saved him from his doomed home planet. Moza plants the bomb, but, overcome with guilt caused by him remembering how Neri had convinced the mole to spare him, he warns her about the explosive, which Jobah is able to get out of the palace before it detonates.
  • 17. Galiel blasts Moza for failing him, then has him and Elgar stalk Neri and Jobah in the hope of getting a hint of where the third crystal could be, telling the pair that if they fail him again, they should not bother coming back. Elgar at one point tearfully reminiscences about the love that she and Galiel once shared; when Moza broaches the subject of his own past, specifically his family, Elgar quickly changes the subject.
  • 18. The third crystal is hidden in a chasm, and guarded by a Giant Enemy Crab. While Neri and Jobah deal with the crab, Elgar tries to get the crystal, but has trouble moving it and, while struggling, ends up revealing to Moza that Galiel stole him from his parents, who he left to die after devastating their planet. This revelation causes Moza to run off and pull a Heel–Face Turn, leaving Elgar at the mercy of another beast that was protecting the crystal.
  • 19. Elgar manages to get away with the crystal and, sick of being Galiel's glorified slave, she decides to keep it for herself.
  • 20/21. Galiel telepathically tries to talk and threaten Elgar into giving him the crystal, but she ignores him, and eventually makes it so that he is unable to observe the outside world any longer. Using an energy sphere, Galiel pulls Moza back to him; Moza feigns still being allied to Galiel, who angrily tries to threaten him into trying to steal the crystal from Elgar, screaming, "You get that crystal, Moza, or I'll destroy you totally, JUST AS I DID YOUR PARENTS!"
  • 22/23. As Elgar enjoys her new power, using it to craft a giant ice palace, Galiel resorts to astral projecting a younger image of himself there, to try and sweet talk Elgar back to his side. Elgar is nearly swayed, but ultimately rejects Galiel, calling him out over his abuse of her feelings, and how he probably never really loved her. Neri, Jobah, Moza, and Micro manage to take the crystal from Elgar, who ends up being frozen by her own powers. Elsewhere, the Amphibians manage to sever the roots of Galiel's meteor, causing it to float up to the surface.
  • 24/25. Moza naively takes the crystal and uses it to unfreeze Elgar, convinced that this act of kindness will cause Elgar to forego her evil ways. Once free from the ice, Elgar reclaims the crystal, freezes Moza, and tosses him into the sea (where he's found by Mandrool and Neri) while the Flyers and the Cave Dwellers coordinate an attack on Galiel's meteor. Preying on Elgar's resurfaced insecurities, Galiel manages to successfully woo her into returning to him, and she arrives just as the Flyers and the Cave Dwellers manage to crack open Galiel's meteor. Before anyone can stop her, Elgar hands the crystal over to Galiel, who uses it to rejuvenate himself. As he announces his plan to claim all four crystals, which will make him powerful enough to conquer the universe, Galiel mocks Elgar for believing that he would ever consider her anything more than his slave.
  • 26. Re-anchoring his meteor, Galiel uses his restored power to begin devastating Oceana with natural disasters before blasting Elgar out of his sight and setting off to Mandrool's cave, which he is now strong enough to force his way into, passing the mystical barrier and killing two Narwhal guards. Getting a hold of the other two crystals, Galiel uses all four of them to begin overtaking Oceana, but Neri, psychically backed by everyone on the planet, engages in a battle of wills with Galiel, which Galiel eventually loses; the crystal's return to their resting place, and turn Galiel into a statue that sinks to the ocean depths.

Heinousness: The Warrior was mindless, and Moza was a manipulated Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain who eventually pulled a Heel–Face Turn. Elgar was fully complicit in Galiel's atrocities, but she was in love with him, and her own actions when she tried to strike out on her own paled in comparison to his.

A flashback showed Bandor's descent into ruin (scorched earth, wrecked buildings, people being mind-controlled, the Emperor shackled in a prison cell awaiting his death, etc.) and it's said to be just one of many planets (Moza's included) that Galiel had conquered and plundered over the last 2,000 years. He tortured his glorified slaves constantly, manipulated them into serving him by feigning love for Elgar and by making Moza think that he was indebted to him, and made it clear that he would kill or abandon them at a moment's notice as soon as they stopped being useful to him. Taking just one crystal from Oceana melted the polar ice caps and killed off all of the Griffins; taking all four of them would have ended all life on the planet, not that Galiel (who was already ravaging it with natural disasters) cared.

Mitigating Factors: Him saving Moza from his dying home world turned out to be a highly embellished story, and while he may have once loved Elgar, by the events of the series he's come to see her as little more than a slave, one who he abandons as soon as he gets what he wants from her.
