Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up]You know what, I think he might. I don't remember him having any redeeming qualtities, and sending humanity to the Dark Ages is probably bad enough. I'll have an EP of him sometime later.

Also, the reason why I didn't think Darkseid counted was because Brainiac seemed way worse with around the same resouces.

So Darkseid's outheinoused (A Rare Sentence), while Brainiac's basically a GDV (A Rare Sentence)?

[up]Yeah, that sums it up about right.

[down]Actually, it seems to also apply if one villain is just really, really, evil(I'm referring to Jigsaw and Kreigkopf). I think if you have more lower-level villains, that means there are more villains to stand out against.

From what I understand The thing about how "there's a point where Recources stop mattering" is for when a franchise has NUMEROUS Uber Evil charachters like DBZ or Doctor who.

On the 2003 Teen Titans YMMV we have an Omnicidal Maniac Multiversal Conqueror Next to a Sadistic Terrorist.

Hey guys, there’s an certain video game villain that i’m considering on Effort posting: Quinking from Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3: Night of the Quinkan. Has he been discussed before, if not, i’ll gladly go for it, after all, I used to play the Ty games ALOT when I was younger.

Here is the 2nd candidate from Superman & Batman: Generations.

Who is he? What does he do?

In 1929, Lex Luthor(under the identity of Rex Thorul), was previously working for a scientist named Dr. Erwin Stanislaus. However, Lex Luthor has betrayed him since and has constructed a robot to wreck havoc in the city. Superboy and Robin(Bruce Wayne as a teen) stop it before it kills too many people, find Lex Luthor disguised as the professor, and take him in to prison.

In 1939, Lex Luthor is seen again, but he is just a henchman of the Ultra-Humanite. As I said before in the previous effortpost, Superman throws the Hyperglobe at the Humanite's rocket, destroying it, and the Ultra-Humanite and Lex Luthor swap brains.

In 2008, Lex Luthor wakes up to find that he is in a brain in a robot's body, runs out of the building, and begins attacking the city. Knight-Wing(Clark Wayne, son of Joel and a woman named Mei-Lai) flies to stop him, and Lex(now calling himself Metallo) tries to weaken him using Kryptonite. However, it doesn't affect Knight-Wing as much as it does Superman, and Knight-Wing, along with several other superheroes, defeat him. Lex Luthor does manage to cause a blackout in Metropolis with an EMP, though.

In 2025, Lex Luthor escapes from prison and detonates another, much larger EMP, causing technology to fail worldwide and hundreds of millions of people to die. It takes a while for society to make new technology that can adjust to the conditions(the EMP altered the electromagnetic fields of the Earth).

In the 25th century, Lex Luthor is freed again, goes to the Superman Museum, and plants an atomic bomb. He also uploads his brain to to the A.I. in the museum, planning to gain control of every computer grid on the planet. Fortunately, Green Lantern contains the bomb safely and Lex is stopped.

Unfortunately, Lex Luthor succeeds in gaining control of every grid on the planet and wages war on humanity. One day, he blankets the entire world with Kryptonite radiation, killing Clark Wayne and Lois(Clark Wayne's daughter). Eventually, Lana(Clark Wayne's other daughter) and Batman, who is given superpowers, battle and defeat Lex once and for all together after isolating his intellect in a single network.

Heinous standard?

After consideration, I think he manages to pass. Sending human civilization back to the Dark Ages is unique for the setting, and many, many people die as a result. Starting a war against humanity is also pretty bad.

Mitigating factors? Freudian excuse?

None. He does proclaim that "the whole world is going to pay for his pain" after being released in the 25th century, but he was already evil beforehand.

Conclusion?

I would give him a yes.

[tup]Humanite.

Alright, let's get this over with.

What's the Work?

The Goblin Wars, by Kersten Hamilton, is a fantasy trilogy centered around a teenage girl, Teagan Wylltson, who discovers that she and her brother Aiden are half-goblins. Joined by their distant cousin Finn Mac Cumhaill (who Teagan forms a romantic relationship with), Teagan finds her family and loved ones threatened by goblinkind, led by the goblin god himself....Fear Doirich.

Who Is He?

The Dark Man, Fear Doirich is a Fallen Angel and the creator and "god" of the goblins, aka Sidhe, creatures that he cobbled together from various worlds. Long in the past, Fear Doirich, alongside his wife Mab, Queen of the Sidhe, gathered his forces and invaded what would come to be known as Ireland, driving the Fire Bolg back into Mag Mell, the sentient hidden "world-between-worlds'. He ruled over Ireland for centuries until the sons of men, the Milesians, came over the sea. Fear Doirich would've wiped them out had the Fire Bolg not returned and joined the Milesians in beating back the goblins, forcing them to retreat into Mag Mell. However, as an act of spite, Doirich locked the pathways into Mag Mell, forcing the Fire Bolg to roam the world forever without a home, becoming the Irish Travelers, while Doirich ruled Mag Mell, reducing it to a horrific Crapsack World overrun with his murderous creations.

Seeking vengeance on Amergin the bard, the Milesian who had driven them into Mag Mell, Mab had her sister Maeve seduce him. Maeve fell in love with him for real and they conceived two daughters, Aileen and Roisin. The goblins whisked the family into Mag Mell, and Doirich tortured and killed Amergin and Maeve, but kept the daughters alive, planning to breed a new race with them, consensual or not. They managed to flee, however, and while Aileen married and had Teagan and Aiden in the human world, Roisin hid herself in Yggdrasil, which Doirich and his shadows cannot enter due to its holiness. Meanwhile, one of the Irish Travelers, Cumhaill, ran away with the daughter of a rich man, who retaliated by making a blood covenant with Fear Doirich, who cursed the lovers to have goblins haunt them and their ancestors through all eternity. The lovers died horribly, but their son, Fionn Mac Cumhaill, was raised by a woman warrior and female Druid to fight goblins, and he struck a blow against Doirich by killing his son, Aillen the Burner. The war between the Mac Cumhaills and goblinkind intensified, with one Mac Cumhaill born each generation to fight the goblins, with the current being Finn.

In the present, Doirich sends his shadows to kill Aileen and has her husband, John, whisked into Mag Mell to be slowly tortured to death for days in order to draw Teagan in, hoping to have her take Roisin's place, whom he also intends to kill once she leaves Yggdrasil. Once he has them in his grasp, Doirich attempts to kill Aiden, but Finn intervention allows them to retaliate and subdue Doirich and his son Kyle. Though they manage to escape Mag Mell with their father, by the next book Doirich has sent his forces to torment Teagan's family and friends. His goblin forces kill multiple people for entertainment, driving Teagan to venture back into Mag Mell to pull Doirich into the human world and allow Finn's guardian angel, Raynor, to destroy him. Arriving at his kingdom in the midst of a party, whose source of entertainment consists of a "phooka" being torn to pieces by the goblins (with an iron collar around his neck specifically to prevent a quick death), Teagan nearly reaches Doirich, but at the last second chooses to save a phooka, Gil, from being killed by Mab.

In the final book, the gateway to Mag Mell threatens to open and unleash all of goblinkind. As her loved ones continue to be killed as a result of the goblins, Teagan returns to Mag Mell to put a stop to Doirich and Mab's tyranny once and for all. While Mab is killed, Doirich uses the distraction to whisk away and attempts to kill Aiden. However, he is caught in a trap and Raynor appears in a motorbike, colliding with Doirich and whisking the evil god out of existence.

Mitigating factors?

Pfffft. He never displays any care for anyone else. He and his wife Mab despise each other, with there even being a story of Mab having an affair and trying to have the resulting child buried alive, only for Doirich to have the phookas guard the child with their lives....specifically to make Mab suffer by making her watch her image grow old and die.

Heinousness

Big Bad and is responsible, directly or not, for much of the suffering in the books. There's Mab, but she has little in the way of actual screentime, and also Kyle, who's plenty nasty (for reference, he's literally Jack the Ripper), but he gets a bizarre Alas, Poor Villain death.

Final Thoughts?

Your call.
