Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yes to Kilokhan. How do they stop nuclear armageddon?

What is this for Curry? He's also done Pennywise, Skullmaster, Arl Rendon Howe, Animated!Palpatine, Doviculus, and (if he counts) Animated!Slagar.

Anyone know if VR Troopers or Beetleborgs has anyone?

Also, I admit, I just binged the entirety of Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad for that EP in one setting. My eyes hurt (from strain, I like the show).

I honestly forget how terrible Kilokhan actually was though.

EDIT: Servo destroys his monster in a tough battle and just barely restores the damage to the digital world in time. Worth noting: if the missiles had actually LAUNCHED, it wouldn't have MATTERED and that would've been game over and it got cut close.

[up]Yes, I know.

Also, in case the edit didn't go through: Servo barely beat his monster in time to stop the missiles from launching, but had they launched, he explicitly wouldn't have been able to stop them. Not super fancy, but the episode the stock footage came from was about a monster turning flowers into emitting poison pollen over one city, so not much they could've done to epic it up.

Also, nice quote from Kilokhan at the end:

"It is a shame the missiles failed to ignite. I believe your world could use a good cleaning. A cleansing by fire. An end to all meat things everywhere."

As for Beetleborgs and VR Troopers, I brought up Nukus before and he got downvoted solely due to lacking agency (being made by Les Fortunes to be evil, though as he's concept art, I still don't believe that's the case).

I COULD do one for Grimlord, but would genuinely seeming to care about his pet iguana disqualify him?

Wait, he contacted a Mad Artist too?

Given that the SSSS Gridman had references of both versions. We're talking about proto Alexis.

Heh, Elfen needs to see this.

Mir: Ah, right, him.

As for Grimlord: If he GENUINELY cares about his pet iguana, I would probably consider that disqualifying.

[up]Takeshi Todo also did artwork for Khan Digifer to bring to life, but he was primarily a hacker first if I remember correctly. So yeah, her being mainly an artist likely was a reference to Malcolm.

Also, I love that if Kilo gets approved, we officially have a CM who managed to commit genuinely horrific atrocities with electronic pom poms and Christmas lights.

[up]I can say one thing Akane got from Malcolm definitely: Khan Digifer brainwashed his victim, while Malocolm, like Akane, was a genuinely antisocial and not mentally well person all on his own.

So I found a Mongul image; I just have NO idea what it's from.

EDIT: It looks like it's from a Green Lantern issue. On that note, should Mongul be moved from Superman to DC?

Also no where not moving a main member of Superman's Rogues Gallery out of his page. The in General section in DC and Marvel should only be for guys who aren't tied to any specfic Rogues Gallery or hero like that.

Mongul don't have the weirdness that he flipflops between being a Superman villain with a Green Lantern villain? But mostly a Superman villain.

Also, it looks like Post-Crisis Mongul does indeed flip flop between the two.

[tup] to Mabry, Kilokhan, and Trunchbull

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic: Commander Vergost, from the Nar Shaddaa sidequest "Genocide", is a xenophobic and genocidal Imperial officer who disgusts even his fellow Empire. Taking control of a slaving camp on Nar Shaddaa, Vergost uses the secrecy of the planet to develop a bioweapon unbeknownst to his superiors, using it to begin wiping out members of the alien race the Evocii. Vergost plans to unleash the weapon across the space moon to kill the millions of Evocii populating it, then to present his work to the Empire in the hopes of spreading it across the galaxy to eventually wipe out all alien races. When his bioweapon is destroyed, Vergost, in rageful spite, starts massacring every Evocii he can get his hands on, killing thousands of them before he is stopped.

  • One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: "Big Nurse" Ratched is the cruel head of the state hospital the story takes place in, using her connections to her superiors to allow herself free reign over the hospital. Ratched subjects her dozens of patients to horrific conditions and abuse, employing brutal lackies and methods to keep patients in line and under her thumb, uncaring of the countless patients who commit suicide or self-mutilation due to her rule. Of the belief that her patients have to be perfectly-functioning before allowing them to leave, Ratched often resorts to electro shock treatments and even lobotomies to destroy her patients' minds. When her rule is challenged over and over again by Randle McMurphy, Ratched increases her abuse of the patients to the point that one of McMurphy's friends kills himself. Though Ratched's control over the patients is broken, she spitefully has McMurphy lobotomized in a last-ditch effort to terrorize the patients into falling back in line.

  • Legends of the Dark Knight:

    • Mr. Lime, real name Dewhurst, is a greedy sociopath who, after murdering his elderly parents to gain their inheritance, begins systematically slaughtering elderly folks across Gotham to frame his acts as the work of a Serial Killer and draw attention away from himself. Utilizing guns, bombs, and poisons, Mr. Lime kills over a dozen innocent seniors, even couples and the homeless, and sets an occupied nursing home on fire to kill as many of the occupants as possible. Me. Lime plans to continue his spree until he's absolutely certain he's in the clear, being stopped by Batman even as he prepares to murder even more people. Batman shows a special disgust towards Mr. Lime, noting his petty and despicable motive is that of a pure evil monster.

    • Davies is a seemingly unassuming man who in truth runs a snuff film ring. Taking a special order from Richard Carmichael, Davies has a dozen young women kidnapped, tortured, and asphyxiated on camera, selling the film's to Carmichael and planning to continue making more. When Batman begins investigating him, Davies has his partners murdered before trying to have Lee Hyland, a potential witness, executed as well. After Davies' death, Batman finds a ledger filled with dozens of names who Davies has made films for, exposing his massive snuff ring and revealing he has made countless films and is responsible for death across Gotham.
