Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Oh Yeah I agree, it does have a unique enough edge to make him stand out enough. Even the worst of FF's badguys don't deal in sex crimes.

Alright, ACW asked me to truncate some of the Suikoden entries so lmk what people think of these:

  • Suikoden:
    • Suikoden: Neclord, once a power-hungry man who journeyed to the Blue Moon Village of peaceful vampires, willingly had himself made into one. Stealing their Moon Rune, which had kept the thirst for blood of the villagers at bay, the vampires were forces to choose between killing to eat or starving. Joining with Windy, Neclord decimated villages to obtain more True Runes in the name of his avarice. Attacking the village of North Window, Neclord wiped out the population to revive them as an undead army for himself, doing the same to the soldiers of a fortress he was made governor of. Demanding a young girl be sacrificed once per year to be his bride, the screams from Neclord's castle could be heard throughout the village. Returning to North Window, Neclord abducts and murders women who stray too close. Trying to turn the population of Tinto City into yet another undead army, Neclord abducts more women to be his "brides".
    • Suikoden II: The "Mad Prince" of the Highland Kingdom, Luca Blight, relishes in committing murder and expresses disgust to anything that dares live. Having his own Child Soldiers slaughtered by his men dressed as soldiers from Jowston, Luca happily provokes war just to enjoy the carnage. Burning a village to the ground, Luca makes a point of killing each and every person and when a woman begs for her life, forces her to act like a pig before shouting "Die pig!" when she complies to try and save herself. Decimating a fortress, Luca is found running a teenage boy through with his sword before trying to kill a young girl whose parents he had already murdered and though she survives his attack, is rendered mute from the trauma. Sacrificing the entire population of a city to the Beast Rune in a bid for more power, Luca's war crimes prove to be so depraved he is eventually betrayed by the Highlanders who assist the player in defeating him, much to Luca's delight at the chance for combat this will provide him. Though he has the excuse of watching his mother be raped while his cowardly father hid, Luca grows up to be a monster who shows no care for anyone, even dying while boasting himself to be "the true face of evil".

Thoughts?

[down] I'll take a look, though if he's the villain of every work in a popular franchise, it might be a case where the length is warranted.

[up]Looks good. If you don't mind would you be cool with trimming Master Xenahort of Kingdom Hearts as well. Its a massive wall of text at the moment (tbf though that's what happens when you make a villain the Big Bad of every single game in a series, the crimes stack up after awhile).

It's the kind of thing where Yotsuyu was screwed from the get go. In a situation like hers, it's hard not to come out with a heightened sense of misanthropy that would have lead anyone to becoming a villain. But in her capacity as a villain, she's just so beyond the pale that it separates her from her Freudian Excuse and puts her agency in her own hands. She's not just getting vengeance at the people who wronged her (they're all in an entire different country during this period of the game), she's slaughtering and tormenting everyone from the former noble class who sat on her suffering to those as weak and defenseless as she was and she loves the suffering from both sides equally.

It's implied that Yotsuyu's backstory isn't wholly uncommon for her country, and sex crimes appear and are suggested in the massive glut of sidequests and content that the game has (MM Os are really, really hard to set a heinous standard as it turns out). It damns Asahi as a person nonetheless, but it's not the only time something like this gets brought up.

Alright, as per Mir's request here's a restructed Xehanort. I didn't wanna trim too much since he does a lot but lmk what folks think:

  • Kingdom Hearts: The franchise's Overarching Villain, Master Xeharnort was once a Well-Intentioned Extremist seeking to bring a balance of light and dark in the universe but proves time and again he's gone so far off the edge that any care or kindness that he once held has long since faded. Taking the eleven-year-old Ven as his apprentice, Xeharnort intends to train him to use the darkness, then steal his body from him. When Ven proves unable to aid his nefarious endgoal, Xeharnort forcibly extracts the darkness from his body, rendering the child comatose and throwing his body to his own much-hated home world in the hopes he will perish. Realizing Ven will not die, Xeharnort gives him to fellow Keyblade Master Eragus to train the boy in the light until it grows strong enough that he can be forcibly reunited with the darkness, becoming a weapon strong enough that Xeharnort can use him to reshape the world. Deciding he wants the body of Eragus' other student, Terra, Xeharnort manipulates the two into fighting, personally killing Eragus when the combat weakens him. Splitting himself into two beings, Xeharnort has one half, the Heartless, "Ansem", possess Riku and manipulate a cartel of Disney villains to run amok and cause their own chaos; and the Nobody, "Xenmas", which forms "Organization XIII" and strings its members along to become vessels for Xeharnort to store pieces of his own Heart in and turn them into clones of himself to extend his own life and power. A callous Chessmaster who would risk apocalypse to sate his own curiosity, Xeharnort is a monster who will do anything for ultimate power.

Is TV Tropes going through more maintenance, barely anything is working on my end. Certain buttons aren't appearing and the folders aren't working.

All right, I'm just finishing up the tenth episode of Season 3 of 24.

We're cutting Ramon Salazar.

Before you ask, this has nothing to do with his relationship with his brother, Hector, and that comment about having a funeral for him. Whether or not he genuinely cared for him matters little here. The problem is the heinous standard. I read his current write-up, which reads "since his release from prison, Ramon killed numerous innocent people." This is blatant exaggeration. Throughout his entire appearance in Season 3, Ramon kills less than five people. He stabs his lawyer, Douglas Shaye, in the neck with a pen. He has his men kidnap a prison guard's son in order to force the guard to murder Luis Annicon, a government official who got him arrested. And he kills his brother after he tries to walk out on the Cordilla Virus deal. That's about it.

It's implied Ramon is responsible for killing Annicon's wife and children, but this was off-screen. And the first episode shows a pile of bodies being dumped into a giant grave, but it's not confirmed that Ramon is responsible for these deaths. Now yes, Ramon tried to sell the Cordilla Virus to several terrorists, but he had no intention of outright using said virus, nor did he sell it for the intention of killing millions. All he cared about was the money. And considering how we voted down Eli Mills from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom despite trying to sell dinosaurs illegally and knowing how dangerous they were, I fail to see how this is any different.

Hell, Ramon is out-heinoused in his very own season. After Ramon dies, Stephen Saunders replaces him as the Big Bad. The first thing he does is have one of his men place a vial of the Cordilla Virus inside of a hotel. And it goes off, killing hundreds of innocent men, women, and children. Saunders also ordered Ryan Chappelle to be killed, and came very close to getting thousands of undercover agents killed as well. And no ACW, Saunders isn't a CM. He has a daughter he loves; you shush. tongue

So, unless anyone else has other info or questions on Ramon, I say we cut him.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.
