Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Has anyone else played the Lone Wolf series of gamebooks? I've played through the first 2 series now and see there hasn't been any discussion on them. I'm interested in talking with someone on a few potential candidates.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

Speaking of Get Out, the person who played that character got nominated for Best Villain at the MTV Movie & TV Awards this year. Congrats to them on that. I'll be planning to see the movie soon.

Also, is anyone else very annoyed that of the five nominees there are only two that are from movies? I realize they want to integrate movies with TV, but they really needed separate categories for both because they're different mediums and they can't be judged evenly like that. They have to be done so separately. Golden Globes, People's Choice and yes, even Teen Choice and Kids Choice have the right idea and this is gonna backfire. Hope they realize the mistake and fix it next year.

Doesn't help that the only other Best Villain movie nominee for this year is Jared Leto for Suicide Squad. A decent performance, but he contributed very little to the movie. Also, a version of the Joker that's not a CM? NO THANKS.

I'm wondering if Roman Armitage from Get Out counts. He kicked the scheme off and has the most petty motivation (He never got over loosing to Jessie Owens)

The Emperor's New Groove

  • Complete Monster: Deconstructed. Kuzco, while arguably entertaining, is irredeemable for the first half of the film. Pacha's interactions with and reactions to Kuzco are based on a belief that "there is some good in everyone", but, after Kuzco leaves him to die hanging from a bridge, he concedes angrily that Kuzco proved him wrong. After this admission, they are mutually thrown into peril, and, with their lives at stake, cooperate to negotiate themselves out of danger. Then, as Pacha begins falling to his death, Kuzco does something unprecedented by saving his life. After this, Pacha reaffirms his belief, with Kuzco as his evidence.

What?

[up] Not like that. It can certainly be intentionally played with but it would just be a parody. The character still wouldn't be allowed on this trope if they didn't fit the qualifications.

Get Out!'s Grandpa can't count due to mostly having Offscreen Villainy and being out done by his kids and Grandkids. While he kicked it off he never does anything on screen till the end. I mean, they're all horrible, horrible people, it's just that She Who Must Not Be Named manages to secure First Place, even if just barely.

Zheng? If I remember correctly, Ronald blasts him through a few walls the moment he becomes a dragon. Don't think he's ever shown getting up from that.

And can we not get bitchy over an incarnation of the Joker not being a CM? Please? There's no contract or unwritten rule that states he has to qualify in every single adaptation.

A question for the arrowverse before my effortpost two weeks later.

There is...quite a bit of villains who qualified. But looking back at the past seasons for each show, one can safely say that the heinous standard raised. Among many others atrocities:

  • In Arrow, Anarky tried to indirectly murder several hundreds of people. He had no ressource.
  • In Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, Indigo and Vandal Savage tried to kill everyone on Earth.
  • And in Flash, Zoom tried to destroy the multiverse.

With that in mind, I'd like to propose a removal of some examples from the list. Such as, for example, The Dollmaker, who I always thought was pretty tame in comparison to the rest of the list, and it's definitely the case compared to Anarky.

I'm not awfully familiar with the Arrowverse, so I probably shouldn't comment. Though your point about Anarky is salient.

That being said, I will officially abstain.

I don't know, Dollmaker seems like a lesser tier of evil than, say, Vandal Savage.

Alright then. I'll do a complete list for the removal request, after a thorough search on why they qualified, and why it doesn't apply anymore.

[up]So is Anarky, who vastly...outheinouss Dollmaker.

Well, we'll see the arguments. I'm a bit leary of comparing some of Arrow's more...street level toughs to guys like Zoom, though. It's the same reason why, say, Batman villains and Darkseid and Blanx can occupy the same 'verse as a CM

I am with Lighty. It is hard to compare Villain of the Week thug to somebody with plenty of resources. I would keep the Dollmaker. The only villains that I might consider cutting are the original Count Vertigo and Daniel Brickwell. I am still willing to listen to the conversation.

I have another candidate: Zack White from Non-Stop:

Who is he? What does he do?

Zack is The Dragon to Tom Bowen. Together, the two plan to cause the death of a person once every 20 minutes on a plane while making anonimous demands for $150 million. Their goal is to frame protagonist, air marshal Marks, thus ruining the reputation of the Air Marshals Service. Bowen wants revenge for the service not preventing the death of his father on September 11 and, as a result, believes that "security is the country's biggest lie" and its exposure is inevitable. Bowen persuades White, who is in it for the money, to help him.

After they trick Marks into killing fellow air marshal Hammond in self defense (they used their 20 minute warning and the fact that they knew Hammond was going to be going to the bathroom at that time to check his cocaine that he's smuggling to make it look like Hammond was the terrorist, and when Marks confronted him, Hammond pulled a gun on him), they poison the captain. With two people dead, Marks is getting suspicious of everyone on board. Zack tells the woman who has been sitting next to Marks (and who knows that he is looking for a terrorist) that he is a programmer. This gets the woman to convince Marks to have Zack create a virus that will make the terrorist's cell phone ring, revealing them. of course, Zack makes the phone of an innocent man with some sort of medical condition ring. When Marks interrogates him, he suffers a panic attack and dies. Zack and Bowen activate a bomb that will detonate in 30 minutes. When Marks notices Bowen making contact with the banker's pocket, he realizes that he is the terrorist. Zack reveals himself as Bowen's accomplice, and he says that since the money has been transferred (it was put into Mark's account as they were framing him, but they can easily access it and get the money), Bowen and him should parachute off of the plane and leave everyone else to die. Bowen and Marks explain that he wouldn't survive parachuting so high up. It's than revealed that Zack had been used the whole time. Bowen never intended either Zack or himself to get any money, they would die on the plane with everyone else. Marks convinces Zack to help stop this, but Bowen shoots Zack. Marks manages to kill Bowen while the co pilot drops the plane down to equalize air pressure to try and minimize the bomb explosion, the bomb having been moved to the back of the plane and covered with luggage to try and soften the blast in hopes that the plane won't be completely destroyed and they can survive (as throwing it out would make it detonate in midair). The plane is now low enough for Zack to parachute out, so, having survived the bullet, he tries to kill Marks and retrieve a parachute to escape and leave everyone else to their fate. Marks manages to incapacitate Zack and push him farther back in the plane has the bomb goes off. The plane is heavily damaged, but it just barely lands with all of the remaining passengers alive, except for Zack, who was too close to the bomb.

Heinousness?

He helps to kill people on a plane and set off a bomb. The plane was said to have had 150 people on board. While Bowen was trying to get revenge on Marks for his father's death and cause a disaster that would get people to increase airline security, making him a Well-Intentioned Extremist, Zack was just in it for the 150 million dollars, which he didn't know neither of them would get. He tries to leave everyone to die while he gets off.

Redeeming features?

He does not care about Bowen's desire to inspire more airline security, he just wants money. He does try to help Marks stop Bowen at the climax, but that was an Enemy Mine situation, as he discovered that Bowen intended Zack and himself to die with everyone else on the plane. He didn't care about the other passengers, only himself. He was about to parachute Bowen and himself out while leaving everyone else to die before he learned that that wouldn't work, and after Bowen is killed and the plane gets low enough, he tries to kill Marks and get back the parachute.
