Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Here's the header for Suda MB page:

In Suda51's insane multiverse of immoral assassins and crazed killers, there are many who prove to be as intelligent as they are charismatic.

We can change that to:

EDIT: Oh, and can we PLEASE get a CGW header (and knock off that last Fables one)?

[tup] Percival

So two weeks ago I mentioned we needed to make a cut for a character I effortposted before due to new information. Now that two weeks has passed, it's time to discuss the entry and why we need to make the cut.

From the Hearts of Iron IV mod Kaiserredux

  • H. P. Lovecraft is the leader of the occult white supremacist Providence Circle cult operating in New England. While initially a figurehead for the Providence Circle, Lovecraft fully embraces his role as the "Yellow King" of New England if the Providence Circle takes over New England in the wake of the Second American Civil War. Upon taking power, Lovecraft establishes Delta Green as a means of enforcing his will on New England, and launches a campaign of violence against Irish-Americans in order to create a pure white Anglo-Saxon New England, along with a massive crackdown on Abrahamic religions in New England; said religions being replaced with worship of the Elder Gods. If Lovecraft establishes his New Order on either New England or all of America, he launches a massive genocide of non-whites and immigrants deemed to be worms and barely human and enforces a Spartan lifestyle on all his subjects.

I don't know what to say but despite the really horrific crimes he's behind..we're going to have to cut him.

In a recent content update from Kaiserredux a bit over two weeks ago, Lovecraft has the opportunity to survive whatever kills him in the game and he can have an ephiany and genuinely renounce his extremely racist ways and actually work to undo the damage of the far right occultists that used him to come to power, identifying as a leftist rather than a crypto-Esoteric Nazi. It is also revealed that his wife has actually been a positive influence in constraining his toxic behavior.

So cut, multiple positive qualities off the bat. Now...this redemption of sorts isn't completely off the mark and sudden...there was some evidence that Lovecraft did renounce his racist views, and that his views at the end of the life are closer to socialism over the crypto-fascism he esproused for most of it. There is also evidence that his wife was a positive influence rather than a negative one on him during the time he was married.

None of his successors(who are bascically multiple sci-fi and fantasy authors given Historical Villain Upgrade to Esoteric Nazi levels—personally I feel this is less justifiable than making Lovecraft a ultranazi gamer route since while Lovecraft was a rather vile individual for most of his life the others had a much less hateful record and they could have just used other Esoteric Fascists from the time period but influenced by the Cthulhu mythos rather than the Black Sun, but leave it to Kaiserredux to make things for shock value or make people who weren't seeking much political power in real life insane for the sake of it rather than historically plausible stories and gameplay) in the case where he stays dead, while all genocidal occultist nutcases, have enough character or personality to qualify in his stead.

But yeah, all this aside, say goodbye to the Lovecraft entry. [tdown] and never put it back up again unless they retcon all this.

While we are cutting Lovecraft, Beria and Pavelic can stay. I would look into other qualifiers since Kaiserredux is Warhammer 40K levels of cursed and there was a character that narrowly avoids this trope in KR that dosen't have redeeming qualities in KDX and has even worse atrocities under his belt vs. mainline KR I think is worth a discussion but KDX is frankly my least favorite mod for various reasons(which you can kinda tell from my post kinda dunking on the mod for lack of care to historical accuracy and excessive edginess for the sake of it) and the only reasons I play it is because it's Russia and America content is genuinely good—when Kaiserreich finally starts adding content again, I'm out.

Back with another Final Fantasy candidate! I am not fully versed in FF 11 lore but have researched this one as thoroughly as I can. If someone wants to add in something that may disqualify them, I welcome the correction.

What is the work?

The work is Final Fantasy XI, the Final Fantasy MMO that doesn't have an award-winning free trial.

Who is the character?

The character is Eald'narche, the Big Bad of the expansion Rise of the Zilart

What do they do?

10,000 years ago, the Zilart were an oppressive empire and the dominant race on Vana'diel. They tapped into the power of the five Mothercrystals, the source of life in the world, to create and power their civilization. The elder prince of the Zilart, Eald'narche, connected to the Mothercrystals and had a vision telling him that the races of the world had been cast out of Paradise, the realm of the gods, but by using the power of the Mothercrystals they could return. Through the Zilart telepathic link, he shared this vision with his race, and they became obsessed with harnessing the five Mothercrystals to open the gates to Paradise to become gods.

The Dawnmaidens, Zilart who were followers of the Goddess Altana, were concerned for what this plan would do to the world and its people, and they advised the Zilart it could destroy them all, but the Zilart were unmoved and continued their plans. The Zilart intended to channel the power of the Mothercrystals through a system called the Crystal Line into the floating fortress of Tu'Lia, to open the Gate of the Gods there. They were sabotaged by the races they had ignored, and a massive Meltdown occurred that devastated Vana'diel and wiped out the Zilart. However, Eald'narche and his brother Kam'lanaut were sealed in stasis in Delkfutt's Tower.

A few decades before the start of the game, they were unknowingly freed by Raogrimm, who made contact with one of the Mothercrystals and became the Shadow Lord. The Zilart wished to complete their plan, but Raogrimm's contact had corrupted the Mothercrystal's power, so they were unable. They went to the Duchy of Jeuno and joined the city, and Kam'lanaut rose to become the Archduke. Eald'narche was actually the elder brother, but his aging had been frozen when he made contact with the Mothercrystal, so he acted as though he was the child of the two and let Kam'lanaut be the public figurehead. When the Shadow Lord was defeated, the two enacted their plans anew.

The Adventurer and their allies confront Kam'lanaut in Delkfutt's Tower as he attempts to reactivate the path to Tu'Lia and defeat him, but Eald'narche reveals his true identity to them and coldly dismisses his brother's calls for help and lets him die. Eald'narche reveals he has the head of the Shadow Lord and has enthralled the maiden Verena, who can commune with beastmen; he intends to use her to connect to the Shadow Lord's head and tap into its power to reach Tu'Lia. He does so and ascends to continue his preparations to open the Gate of the Gods, and invites the Adventurer to follow and see Paradise for themselves.

Eventually Eald'narche is confronted in the Celestial Nexus, and he prepares to activate the Crystal Line. He battles the Adventurer and his control console is destroyed, and he reveals his true power and engages them again. Defeated again, he begins to reactivate the Crystal Line even if it is incomplete, intending to cause another Meltdown. One of the Adventurer's companions, Lion, sacrifices herself to stop the Crystal Line, and the spirit of the leader of the Dawnmaidens appears to him and consoles him, and he collapses and dies.

Heinous standard

Very high. Eald'narche was the prince of a race of oppressive people, and though he didn't rule them, he clearly inherited their views — he repeatedly expresses contempt and disgust for other races, referring to them as petty vermin and a plague devouring Vana'diel. He directly insults the Galka as being foolish and dismisses all races other than the Zilart as leading petty, meaningless lives, that don't deserve to live in Vana'diel, which rightfully belongs to the Zilart. His trope page attributes the destruction of the city of Tavnazia indirectly to him, by tricking someone into trying to claim an ancient and powerful sword and in doing so they caused a massive explosion; I can't find a direct citation for this, however, so I can't clarify to what extent he was involved in those events.

He intends to open the Gate of the Gods to enter Paradise and become a god-like being. It's unclear in-universe what effect this would have on Vana'diel, but the Dawnmaidens, priestesses who worship the Goddess Altana, advised against it, and Eald'narche and all the Zilart ignored them. During the game he directly expresses that he doesn't care what happens to Vana'diel when he opens the Gate, just as long as he can realize the vision he had 10,000 years ago. When defeated he goes into a full Villainous Breakdown and attempts to reactivate the Crystal Line with the expressed intent to cause another Meltdown that will destroy Vana'diel and kill everyone living on it. With this, he becomes an Omnicidal Maniac and tries to destroy the world before he succumbs to his wounds.

Mitigating factors

Minimal. Eald'narche makes a We Can Rule Together offer to the Adventurer to become a god with him, but given his personality and the insults he hurls at them when they refuse, it's dubious if he really meant it. In a particular moment of coldness, Eald'narche allows his brother to die without aiding him, mocks him for thinking the Crystal chose him, and pretty much invokes You Have Outlived Your Usefulness word-for-word. He shortly after reveals he had a secondary plan ready to reach Tu'Lia if Kam'lanaut failed, and in the same sentences dismisses him as worthless. In this he makes it clear he cares nothing for his brother and only viewed him as a pawn to achieve his vision.

His character page lists Even Evil Has Loved Ones, and cites the end of Rise of the Zilart implying he cared for the leader of the Dawnmaidens, Yve'noile. But watching the scene, I find that interpretation highly questionable — his reaction to her is merely surprise and saying her name, that's all. There's nothing in his demeanor to imply any sort of positive disposition towards her, and having watched all his other scenes and read his dialogue, I don't find any mention or even hinting that he has any regard for anyone at all.

The best that could be said is that his motive of wanting to open the Gate of the Gods is understandable and has a logical reasoning behind it. The next expansion Chains of Promathia reveals Eald'narche knew that the humanoid races were once god-like beings that lived in Paradise before the world and its people degraded to their current state, and he thinks the Zilart are reclaiming what they lost. However, the Dawnmaidens (again, followers of the goddess Altana, who know much more about this stuff than him) advised against doing this, as it could have unintended consequences, and they were ignored. Further, Eald'narche's demeanor makes it clear he mostly cares that he will return to Paradise and become a god — again, he repeatedly voices racism towards the lesser races of Vana'diel for their inherently flawed and imperfect nature, and even in the ancient past the Zilart were oppressors of those they saw as beneath them.

Conclusion

Eald'narche is obsessed with opening the Gate of the Gods to enter Paradise and become a god, and when he is thwarted he has a Suicidal Cosmic Temper Tantrum and spends his last moments trying to destroy the world out of spite and revenge for being denied.
