Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Also if we wanted we could use the full quote which contains even more.

"I am not interested in conflicted antagonists. Nor, for that matter, is anyone else. People want a bad guy they can hate unequivocally. Someone whose brutal demise they can cheer without remorse. Life, sadly, rarely treats them to such a luxury. And here are all these actors, trying to muddy things with moral complexity. F-ck that, I say. And I'll not have it. I am not the hero in my own story. I am the bad guy. I have no end in mind that justifies my means. There are no skeletons in my closet, no abusive childhood or inciting misery that might expiate my vile behavior. Nor am I insane. I know the difference between good and evil. And I am fully capable of empathizing with the pain, emotional or physical, of others. No sociopath, I. Rather, I simply prefer bad over good. Wrong over right. Sick over healthy. Untrue over true."

Though maybe this is too long.

I prefer the truncated version. Both smack you in the face with their pure evilness and I love that (likewise, it's one of my favorite quotes for this trope, Ordeaux) but the shorter version's better for a wiki page.

Fair enough, I was admittedly thinking this would probably be too long for the wiki anyway just wanted to bring it up as an option.

Though the current quote can probably go to the main quotes page.

Huh, funny that. Not a complaint, but interesting that both the image and quote for X-Men could be from relatively obscure characters.

For Spidey, OTOH, it's Carnage.

Btw the star wars quantic game has been delayed till 2028. (Geeze). As they couldn't get anyone to work on it.

Does anyone still want to reserve this if it's not going to come out till that far in the future.

What Is the Work?

Reform School Girls is a 1986 Women In Prison movie. Intended as a spoof of the genre, the movie’s not any wilder than other WIP movies, and still plays its drama very seriously. An Indecisive Parody at its finest.

Jenny is sentenced to the Pridemore Juvenile Facility, a reform school for troublesome teenagers like herself. There, she has to deal with the facility’s horrific staff, as well as the prison’s alpha bitch Charlie (played by late punk rock singer Wendy O. Williams, who was 37 at the time) as she tries to make an escape.

But not if these two have anything to say about it.

Who are They?

Warden Sutter (played by Werewolf Bitch herself, Sybil Danning) is a power-hungry religious zealot who runs the prison with an iron fist.

Edna Dawson, aka “Big Eddy”, is the head matron of the prison, an incredibly sadistic guard tasked to keep an eye on the prisoners and punish them whenever the chance, all to exercise control over them.

What have they done?

Sutter, under the guise of religion, has prisoners punished through painful means or torture, while also allowing slave labor in the form of making the women work in the prison garden in the hot sun with no water. Enabling Edna to do her worst regarding her treatment of the prisoners, which include torture and sexual punishment, (Edna calls this “complete control”) Sutter views herself as the power, with Edna as the control, preferring to rule with fear.

Edna herself takes advantage of the prisoners by routinely punishing them (“complete control” as she calls it), such as placing them in enclosed, tight cell blocks to either physically or sexually torture them for fun. Edna allows Charlie to brand and molest the prisoners in order to further establish control over them, as she sees them as “making progress.” Edna oversees the prisoners work the gardens, refusing to allow them water until they pass out from heat exhaustion.

Setting her sights on the fragile prisoner Lisa, when she finds her in her office retrieving her stuffed kitten (which was a memento from her late little brother), she forces Lisa to watch her burn it, laughing at her pain. Later on, she forces Lisa to stay in the claustrophobic isolation cell, letting her know that she’ll know just where to find her if she wants her, proceeding to sexually molest her all the while. But the final straw comes when Jenny gives Lisa a stray kitten she found. Charlie reveals the kitten to Edna, leading to Edna killing the kitten by stomping it. This, combined with being branded and raped by Charlie, leads to Lisa running toward the prison tower and committing suicide, to Edna’s apathy.

Sutter later does whatever she can to prevent word of her abusive practices getting out and shutting down her prison, mainly by silencing the prison’s kindhearted psychologist Dr. Norton by throwing her out and ordering Edna to torture her Jenny the chief witness until she refuses to testify, making Charlie and her gang the witnesses instead and having them lie about their treatment under threat of harm.

When Jenny commences a breakout, with all the prisoners wanting Edna’s head, Edna grabs a shotgun from a guard and shoots as many prisoners as she can. Edna climbs the tower and continues killing the prisoners, all while screaming “Control! Complete control!” This leads to Charlie plowing a bus into the tower, causing it to catch on fire, and the flaming Edna to fall to her death.

And as for Sutter, she just... vanishes from the story altogether. Yay.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. The movie may have been intended as a parody, but the two's actions are still played very seriously.

While Edna's got zero excuse, Sutter, despite her claims, is nothing but a power-hungry monster who cares more about dishing out violence and assuming control over actually helping her prisoners reform.

Heinousness?

The two women run the prison, allowing everything to happen, such as Charlie’s rapes and brandings, in order to establish dominance. Sutter herself also allows Edna to carry out her abuse on the prisoners, and even encourages her to be as bad as possible just to teach them a lesson.

Compared to other WIP movies, Sutter’s religious angle helps her stand out from other wardens from the genre, and Edna’s active abuse, both of the physical and sexual kind, help her stand out from ordinary guards of the genre. Plus, Edna kills a cute, innocent kitten and makes a joke about it afterwards. Even as someone who’s allergic to cats like myself, that’s cold.

But boy, do I wish Charlie could keep. But despite branding her victims and raping them, she pulls a heroic sacrifice to help the prisoners make an escape, which is treated as an actual act of altruism.

Conclusion

I think the two are keeps.

What's the work?

A Master of Djinn is a 2021 novel by P. Djeli Clark. Hey, do we all love good modern fantasy? I bet we do. Well, this is set in a magic alternate history in Egypt. Fatma el-Sha'arawi is an agent of the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments, and Supernatural Entities. She's a brilliant operative, along with her allies, including rookie Hadia and Fatma's long-time friend and part-time lover Siti.

Things have gone to hell. There's a series of brutal murders carried out supposedly by Al-Jahiz, the returned man who unleashed magic on the world. A being who desires to control the Djinn. Lord Worthington, the man in charge of Egypt, is murdered and Fatma is on the case. And our monster?

Who is Abigail Worthington?

The daughter of Lord Worthington, in Egypt with her father and brother, Alexander. Abigail is a far more capable individual magically and martially than anyone suspects. Abigail is a ruthless imperialist who intends on conquering Egypt to gain control of its powerful Djinn. Viewing her father as well, Abigail assassinates him, burning him alive along with many others in strategically placed positions to drive Egypt into chaos.

In truth, Al-Jahiz is a shared identity using illusory magic. Abigail is the mastermind and presents herself in the guise as a powerful messiah to inspire a full on riot and uprising against Egyptian authorities, with many killed and the situation on a knife's edge. Things, to be clear, are extremely rough in the results here.

Abigail intends to misdirect the others and awaken the Nine Kings, the chief Djinn, so she can dominate and control them and use them to raze anything in her path. The casualties, of course, will be enormous. Fatma discovers that Siti is part Djinn herself, half on her father's side, and with the aid of the madman Ahmad (who may or may not be the Egyptian god Sobek), tracks down more on the plot. Exposed, Abigail flees to summon the Nine Kings.

Fatma stops Abigail to the end and the kings are NOT happy at the presumption. Many Djinn arrive and actually? They're pretty chill about this whole things here. Many like the world and don't want to drown it in blood. Abigail is defeated and the Djinn prepare to depart peacefully. Fatma asks if the chief Djinn King can make Abigail forget what's happened to remove the knowledge that makes her a threat. The Djinn makes her forget.

Makes her forget everything about herself, rendering her an empty shell. Djinn, right?

Mitigating Issues?

Nah. Abigail is an imperialist of the worst sort. Painful murders (her own father included), race riots, planning massive bloody conquest? She's certainly polite as far as it goes, but that fades instantly when pressed. She's not sadistic, but wholly uncaring of people who die. She also has nothing but contempt for her family, especially her brother.

In fact, she even tries to set up her brother to take the fall initially. Nice girl.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Yes to Abigail.

X-Men: The Animated Series. Pretty sure I don't need to explain the premise.

Who is the Master Mold?

Created by Bolivar Trask and Henry Peter Gyrich to protect humanity from mutants, the Master Mold is a giant Sentinel designed to produce armies of his smaller brethren, first introduced doing so for the nation of Genosha in their efforts to capture mutants for slave labor.

Unfortunately, the Master Mold decides to take its programming to the logical extreme: since mutants are humans, that means humans must be protected from themselves. It has its Sentinels kidnap various world leaders, intending to kill and turn them into robots, before apparently being destroyed by Xavier. However, the Master Mold survives as a disembodied head, and waits in the shadows for its time to strike back.

Cue season four! Bishop, a member of the mutant resistance and subject of an apparently never-ending quest to prevent whatever Bad Future he happens to be in this week, learns that Master Mold — the leader of the Sentinel forces — has sent the powerful Sentinel Nimrod and the time-traveling mutant slave Fitzroy to the past to kill Charles Xavier. Without his influence, the X-Men's present turns into a war-torn hellscape, while Bishop's future features the mutant resistance crushed and Master Mold as the undisputed ruler of the world. Long story short, Fitzroy learns Master Mold was going to have him killed even if he was successful and helps defeat Nimrod, saving Xavier.

Apparently this had a bit of a ripple effect, as the very next episode finishes off the mad Sentinel. Master Mold has his "children" kidnap Trask, Gyrich, and Xavier. The first two are just there to repair him, but since Xavier defeated him the last time, he has something extra nasty in store. He intends to use Xavier's psychic abilities to locate every mutant on the planet, gloating about how the greatest mutant mind will be used to wipe out all of mutantkind. Long story short, he has a giant spike rammed through his head and definitively dies.

Does it Meet the Heinous Standard

Attempted genocide, causes a massive war in a Bad Future, enslaves all mutants further on in that timeline. Think it hits the mark for genocide, and all the evils of the Sentinels can be traced back to him.

Any Mitigating Factors?

The fact that it's programmed specifically to hunt mutants may have caused some issues, but by its final appearance it shows that it's perfectly capable of ignoring orders if it wants to. To paraphrase a little:

Master Mold: Bring me Trask and Gyrich!
Sentinel: We are programmed to apprehend only mutants, not humans.
Master Mold: Hm, you raise a good point. I guess I'll pack everything up, shut down my evil plan, and ju- I don't give a shit, go do what I god damn told you to do!

Its raging god complex also smooths out any problems. By season four, the Master Mold is far more sardonic, hammy, and grandiose as it shit-talks Xavier and boasts about its superiority over all humans.

Easy keeper.

Hm, sure to Mold, and final for tonight, from one of the newer Pathfinder adventures, the Abomination Vault and its ultimate villain: Belcorra Haruvex

Who is Belcorra?

A sorceress whose legend persists long after death in the town of Absalom. Long ago, she was slain by the heroic founders of Otari, but death isn't always the end. Known for her atrocities in the day, rhymes for kids persist where she preys on foolish children. Oh, she is a monstrous cannibal, but isn't so limited in diet. Belcorra's spirit awakens in Gauntlight Keep, in her Abomination Vault. And she plots to unleash it, with her superwapon, the Gauntlight.

In life, Belcorra was a monster. She was a worshiper of the eldritch monstrosity Nhimbaloth and used horrific experiments to gain more power on countless living beings. Others were sacrificed and countless, countless innocents tortured and used as food for the monsters within the Abomination Vaults. Not even her own were immune from her wrath, as Belcorra would subject servants to endless torture just because she was bored sometimes, or her failure. And that food for monsters thing? Was regular. Belcorra loved prisoners agonizingly ripped to bits by predators.

To complete a revival, Belcorra is animating the dead and sending her ghouls out to massacre people and bring dead flesh to use in rituals. Another habit she had? Using allies as hosts for the Corpselights, undead monsters. When the Roseguard invaded her sanctum, she was having dinner with a thieves' guild. Upon learning of that issue, Belcorra excused herself and had her chef poison the guild to kill them in excruciating agony before compelling him to end his own life. And she also made a pact with a devil named Urevian to invade the world. Her death left him trapped in the Vaults, unable to complete his contract.

Now, the heroes descend the vaults and in part 3 of the adventure the way to beat her for good is to gather her own lenses and focus the gaze of her own object of worship, Nhimbaloth, upon her as Nhimbaloth's gaze causes it to devour souls. Belcorra is pulled screamed to her own patron and consumed, erased for all time.

Mitigating issues?

For just one nasty ghost? Wow, Belcorra's got tons of horrific torture, experimentation, cruelty and attempts to use the Gauntlight and her monster armies to destroy all of Absalom and Otari. Well outside the weight class, even for Pathfinder. Never mind no good qualities. She's a creature of pure wickedness and spite.

Conclusion?

Easy keeper.
