Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So far, only one person serms to have weighed in on my suggestions.

I have tried to address their concerns.

Does anyone else want to weigh in on my suggestions?

I concur with Mir. It just encourages ban evaders to come back. An old forum I used to go to could ban IP addresses, but with a VPN that's pretty much impossible now. Damn you, modern technology!

For ban evaders relitigation, what's wrong with simply rewriting the example instead of having to go through another effortpost. It just seems too much work.

Klavice: Last I checked, sockpuppets were not reliable sources of information. They have a tendency to either leave out information or add misinformation.

Additionally, I would argue that sockpuppetry existed before this suggestion, and will persist long after; they will do it regardless. I would also contend that if a newcomer picks something for evaluation from that list, it will make it easier to catch them if they are socks.

[down] The reason for my suggestion that we either create a new sandbox to hold those cut candidates, or link to Ban-Evader Example Rewrites in the to-do lists is precisely because they will be de-prioritized. In fact, I would argue for a waiting period of at least a month before relitigation.

Hmm... there's that. Honestly I suggest we just cut the example entirely if a user gets banned and don't give them the satisfaction of having it back up. If it's a valid example, it will be re EP'd in a slow stream. There's no need to rush it.

I'm ultimately fine with a list but we shouldn't give them the satisfaction of adding it back right away. It just feeds the troll.

Isn't there an entire cleanup dedicated to Ban Evader edit reversion already? Why not ask them?

[up]Sounds good to me.

Just so we are clear:

  • The sandbox/section of the sandbox is meant to document candidates which await re-litigation on account of being effortposted by ban-evaders.
  • I am suggesting a 1 month waiting period minimum from the time that the work is added to the list.
  • I am also suggesting that relitigations potentially need to be reserved in advance, and called in the thread.

This goes for both CM and MB, assuming I can convince both threads.

Does anyone have anything further to add?

~Tropers/ACW, you seemed amenable to my suggestion via PM. Do you have anything to add?

Edit: The more I think about this, the more an extra sandbox seems like too much work.

@Michael: The 1984 Sheena movie got away with full-frontal nudity of Tanya Roberts—a prolonged waterfall bathing scene, in fact.

Hilarious yes to the Dark Overlord, BTW. Honestly surprised nobody got him earlier; the film is one of the reigning kings of So Bad, It's Good.

So having fiiiinally watched "The Maze" from Miami Vice, I got some issues with Elio. And TBH, with the standard as it is, he probably needs to go.

So numerous things:

1) The writeup makes it seem like Elio's the one who kills the detective. He is not. His brother Raul is (Raul, BTW, doesn't qualify; he has a Villainous BSoD in his final scene and surrenders sobbing "I'm sorry!")

2) While he's certainly participating in holding the population of the hotel hostage and planning to murder them, he's still splitting that crime with the other Escobars, including Raul—Raul is the leader of the gang, on whose initiative this all takes place

3) While he is an attempted rapist, and the only one in the Escobars who is, the writeup claims he kills his own brother who tries to defend her. Georges is not Elio's brother; he's the brother of the woman Elio's attempting to rape. He's one of his hostages.

So Elio's rapsheet boils down to...participating in the schemes of his equally nasty family, outside the attempted rape and subsequent murder which—while bad—isn't enough to stand out on its own. There's one other dude much later in the show named Cruz who basically does everything Elio does except with even less resources; he only has the one partner as opposed to an entire gang backing him up.

So I'll probably post Cruz soon, but Elio? Cut him.

Also, I'll also get up another Marvel keep while I've got the stage! A happy find from my impulse buys from my local vintage comic shop, from Marvel Preview #18.

What has Quan-Zarr done?

From the Earth-791 Star-Lord series (the 70s GOTG series I got Gareth and Kyras Shakati from), Quan-Zarr is introduced as ruler of the planet Redstone, a dingy little world where all technology is hoarded by him and his soldiers. Soldiers on his order open the comic slaughtering a ship full of people. These people happen to look like beastmen; no coincidence. There are a spat of beastmen attacks on Redstone when Star-Lord arrives, each claiming innocent lives, but the attacks aren't random. Tthe beastmen have a very understandable chip on their shoulder when it comes to Quan-Zarr.

Redstone didn't always belong to Quan-Zarr. After Quan-Zarr was exiled from the last place he ruled, a twele-planet system we never see, he fled to the most backwater planet he could find—that was Redstone. Quan-Zarr rained absolute hell down on the planet, subjecting the peaceful population to fiery, indiscriminate genocide.

Oh, but Quan-Zarr wasn't “utterly without mercy”; he left some survivors. Yes, he kept a small population on which he “threw like bones” to his scientists, subjecting them to grotesque and agonizing genetic experiments that warped their bodies. Then Quan-Zarr took those monstrosities and put them in a forced breeding camp, forcing them to mate over and over until they produced children. These kids were the beastmen.

The ultimate purpose of these breeding experiments? It seemed to simply be so Quan-Zarr could use the beastmen as pets in a zoo for his own entertainment. Any escapees or rebels were subsequently massacred by police, until Quan-Zarr's own son liberated the remaining beastmen. After this, Quan-Zarr coldly had his boy killed by his soldiers.

Now in possession of a planet-destroying superweapon he hopes to use as a means of conquest to regain his rule over the twelve-world empire, Quan-Zarr's dreams of conquest come to an end when the beastmen's leader invades his capital and impales him through the gut, though Star-Lord has to kill the beastmen's leader to prevent him from taking out his wrath on the rest of Quan-Zarr's people.

Any mitigating factors?

I'll bring up quickly that the aforementioned leader of the beastmen is a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds; he's so consumed with pain and anger for what Quan-Zarr did to him, his people, his race, his...well, everything, so he elects to try and destroy Redstone's capital city and wipe out millions of unrelated people as an extension of his wrath. The beastman's leader isn't without standards—he tries to get Star-Lord to leave, recognizing he has no beef with him—but it's still horrific Misplaced Retribution no matter what Quan-Zarr did.

Now, with that out of the way, Quan-Zarr's still a clear goddamned polevault across the heinous standard. He doesn't have the body count of Gareth and Kyras, but in a span of a single issue Quan-Zarr manages to wrack up a count of tyranny, genocide, eugenics experiments, forced breeding camps, and filicide. For a 70s Marvel comic, that's fucked.

Conclusion?

Clear keeper.

When you have something as massive and overlapping as the Nasuverse? It's kinda hard to justify a page with only eight entries.

It might just be because I don't want to have to deal with yet another page right now, but I'd say at the least just give it time.
