Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Definite, eager 'Yes' to Nishi/the Death Ninja. Can't beat vampire ninjas much any day!

Alright, for my first in the Chill proposals, and in fact my first Tabletop RPG candidate ever? Count Dracoola himself!

Who is he?

Count Dracula is the same vampiric sociopath we all know and have seen come through this thread dozens of time...an ancient conqueror throughout history, Dracula values power over others and the ability to hurt them above all else, except for his unquenchable thirst for blood, of course!

What has he done?

As detailed in the Vampires sourcebook, Dracula was once known as "Vlad Tepesch/Tepes", the Prince of Wallachia. A brutal tyrant known and feared throughout the world, Vlad is famous for his horrific atrocities committed simply out of sadism and barbarism. Vlad gained his nickname of "the Impaler" when he captured about 25,000 civilians, including women and children, and had them all impaled to die a slow, agonizing death.

Vlad regularly hosts parties at his castle, and during said parties has innocent people impaled constantly so he can be entertained by their screams of pain and the stench of their corpses as the night goes on. When one of his guests complained about the smell? Vlad had him impaled and, humorously, hoisted above the rest of the corpses so he would be "above the stench."

Other instances of Vlad's cruelty? When a merchant arrived in Wallachia and had his cart stolen, Vlad threatened to annihilate the entirety of Wallachia unless the people turned the thief and all the stolen loot over, with one extra gold coin than what the merchant had. When the thief (who was impaled by Vlad ofc) and gold were turned over, Vlad asked the merchant if everything was returned...when the merchant answered positive, Vlad reveals that he already knew the answer, and would have impaled the merchant if he had lied to him.

Another time, Vlad, desiring to try out being a merciful, gracious ruler, turned a massive building into a safe house for the homeless and poor of Wallachia, entertaining them with massive parties and feeding them to their heart's content. Deciding that he prefers hurting people, Vlad seals the hundreds of homeless people inside the building and burns it down, savoring the agonized screams of the civilians roasting alive.

Vlad also had himself a mistress on the side, who he explicitly treated as property. When the lady tried to become closer to Vlad by lying that she was pregnant with his child, Vlad reacted by grabbing a sword and slicing her open to see if she was lying, before discarding her corpse like trash.

Though eventually seemingly killed in the midst of a great battle, Vlad by this point had become a vampire through dark means, and, taking the name "Dracula" as a permanent one, spent the centuries roaming the earth, causing pain and misery to all...possibly even being a benefactor to the monstrous Elizabeth Bathory herself.

Now, the original Bram Stoker Dracula itself is canon to the Chill story, so all of Dracula's actions there are here, as well...after his seeming defeat at the hands of Harker, Seward, Helsing, etc, Dracula secretly survived, rejuvenating himself over the course of several years before hopping aboard a merchant ship, slaughtering the crew, and using the ship to travel once more to England, where he systematically hunts down and kills everyone responsible for his attempted murder in the Stoker story, but not before Seward manages to alert SAVE to Dracula's presence.

As detailed in "Vengeance of Dracula," Dracula continues to kill innocent people, turning the women into his wives and storing others away in coffins to be used as zombies. When the Player Characters arrive in England and begin hunting Dracula, Dracula starts killing a heck ton of people around the PCs and leaving their bodies for the PCs to find, while using the madman Kensington to torment the PCs, and when Kensington outlives his usefulness, Dracula kills the man.

Eventually, Dracula tries to turn any female PCs into another of his vampiric wives, and kill any male PCs. Dracula is eventually driven off from England, forced into hiding back in Transylvania, and though they are unconfirmed to be connected to the Count, many more murders turn up in Transylvania over time, with all the marks pointing to our vampire....

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Nah, none to speak of. Dracula is a pure evil sadist who views everyone as either food to consume or slaves to conquer. Though the dude is obsessed with getting ladies at his side, Dracula never treats his "wives" as anything but slaves and weapons to be used in fights.

Being a vampire of course comes with a natural desire for blood and a pretty lax view on killing people, but nothing ever implies outright agencies issues, and plenty of vampires show moments of kindness, mercy, etc....except for a select few who are just irredeemably bad, Drac being one of them. And considering Drac isn't evidenced to have been a vampire during most of his rule as "Vlad", the dude's been killing kids and violating all sorts of moral boundaries since his human days as well.

Heinousness?

Now, as I said, to note is that all vampires have an inherent bloodlust and....casual stance on callous murder, but Dracula is handily the worst any vampire has to offer. He's got a bodycount indescribable, tons of pointless cruelty, and is one of the most vile villains to come out Chill in both personal sadism and widespread murder. Mass impalings of men, women and children, burning hundreds alive, destroying entire countries on a whim, and then add in a hella high personal bodycount when you take both the original Dracula story as well as "Vengeance of Dracula" into account, and yah, we've got a nasty one.

Final Verdict?

It's one of the most heinous versions of Dracula to come through this thread, whatchu think?

[tup] Drac.

[down] Let's not split hairs, please. I don't mean to be rude, but a lot of the time, they overlap, and I personally don't know about anyone else in the thread, but I really don't consider those minutiae important to the task at hand/ want to get sidetracked.

Edit: I don't mean to overstep my boundaries, either. I just seem to remember that the last time, nobody could be bothered to split the identities, and I feel that doing so is unnecessary as well.

Addendum: Okay, I think I definitely went too far. I apologize.

[tup] to Dracula.

Again, should Dracula and Vlad the Impaler be separated on CM Incarnations Per Character? Stoker was somewhat inspired by Vlad in his creation of Dracula, but they're not supposed to be the same person in the original book. We can certainly note where there's overlap.

Yes to the Lighty-Ravok collab!

Now I brought this up to Lighty earlier but this is an early entry (of Fonse actually, who I mentioned about the first EP) but it reads quite dated and as terrible as his genocide is saying it's done with "giant motorbike" sounds silly no matter how much you spell out the consequences. So, current:

  • Victory Gundam: Fonse Kagatie, the elderly Prime Minister of the Zanscare Empire, cynically exploited the messianic, psychic Maria Armonia's harmless pacifist cult to create a brutal military dictatorship, with Maria as his powerless figurehead. As the de facto ruler of Zanscare, he was responsible for green-lighting all of its atrocities, which included the mass execution of dissidents by guillotine; burning entire towns to flush out the League Militaire; and genocide by giant motorbike. His worst act was creating and deploying the Angel Halo, a psychic Doomsday Device designed to wipe out all intelligent life on Earth via Mind Rape, allowing Kagatie's empire to move in and take the planet unopposed. The power source was Maria, later replaced by her eleven-year-old daughter, and thousands of her followers, whom he tricked into believing that they were broadcasting messages of peace and goodwill rather than orchestrating a total planetary genocide. This also meant that they served as human shields for the Halo, ensuring that every bit of damage it took was measured in innocent lives.

Mine:

  • Victory Gundam: Prime Minister Fonse Katagie, de facto ruler of the Zanscare Empire, exploits Queen Maria Armonia's Newtype cult to leave her as a figurehead to his dictatorship. Executing all commanders who fail their objectives and any dissidents, Fonse also uses Operation Giant Roller to attempt to wipe out all of Mexico. Creating the "Angel Halo", Fonse intended to eradicate life on Earth via psychic attack, powering it with Maria and later her innocent young daughter, as well as thousands of Newtype cultists by claiming their powers were broadcasting a message of peace. The connection to the Angel Halo also meant any attacks it received were redirected upon the Newtypes.

I thought it was originally voted to keep after new info came up. Namely that his mitigating factors were from something both dubiously canon and deleted

I'm gonna look for this discussion cause going off memory clearly isn't getting us anywhere.

Easy yes to Dracula

Cut to submit:

  • Complete Monster: Dr. Anton Bartok is a corrupt technology business magnate who will do absolutely anything for money and power. When Veronica, Seth Brundle's lover from the previous film, has been impregnated with Seth's mutated offspring, Bartok lies to her and Stathis about the incredible danger, and she dies during childbirth. He keeps the seemingly normal infant, now named Martin, as a test subject until his mutations manifest. He presents himself as a fatherly figure to Martin while manipulating him for his own ends. He uses a lab dog that Martin grew attached to for the telepod experiments and, when the experiment fails, keeps the mutated creature alive in agony for years for further study. When Martin grows up at an accelerated rate, he gives Martin a private home for himself and allows him to make some human contacts, but installs secret surveillance to continue observing him. He wants to use Martin's unique physiology to control the morpology of all life on Earth and make his company truly hegemonic.

From The Fly 2...fact is? He doesn't do much. He contributes to one person's death, mistreats Martin, warps a dog and...that's it. "control morphology of earth" isn't even that horrific, just generic baddie stuff.
