This is the thread we use to talk things over with people who have received a suspension notice. A lot of the time the notice goes out just so we can explain how seriously we take certain things, not because we want the person to feel bad and go away.

If you're suspended, give What to Do If You Are Suspended a read, then post here to begin your appeal. We try to respond to appeals in order via batch posts every few days. If a moderator has responded to your appeal, you will receive a notification in your private messages, even if you're suspended from PMs.

The Forum Rules apply here.

Don'ts

  • Don't be rude. Rule 1 applies here, too.
  • Don't try to negotiate your suspension outside of this thread, such as by sending Private Messages to moderators or posting elsewhere. Such activity may be thumped or otherwise removed, and may warrant an additional suspension block if it keeps happening. All communications have to take place within this thread.
  • Don't respond to other suspended users. This is a place for you to discuss your suspension, not others'.
  • Don't post multiple times about your appeal if it hasn't been a few days since your last reply from us, since it makes it more difficult to compose responses. If you've posted, we're likely looking at it, and kindly request you to be more patient.
  • Don't make another account to try and get around your suspension. This is called ban evasion and will get you bounced. (Again, read What to Do If You Are Suspended if you don't know what these words mean.)

I think it's clear. It's okay to have two jokes on the same indentation if they tie to each other well enough, and there's no need to make another indentation to separate them.

~Tropers/The_Dag appeal

First, please be patient. A few days, like this, is already stated in the header to be a normal response time.

You were told that your Forum Games ban is permanent, so you can't appeal that ban. We can, however, discuss your current wiki ban, which is because you edited someone's troper wall to discuss forum games...despite specifically being banned from forum games and PM's for your bad behavior. That's circumvention and is explicitly disallowed.

~Crimson Oddball appeal

You were suspended for Edit Warring (read that page please) with this edit. If you disagree with a change or removal to one of your edits, you must obtain agreement/consensus to put it back, not just do it and argue in the edit reasons. Where does Edit War say you can have such conversations?

~Neo Silver Thorn appeal

You still have to address the behavior which got you suspended, which was a rude response to an Example Indentation notifier. In your last reply here you were complaining about double standards and claiming people were looking over your shoulder while editing rather than addressing that so...

~Tropers/Bomber-Boi appeal

You have two notifiers for Zero-Context Examples, but it still shows up in your edits.

Here, for example, you remove the comment markup (%%) on ZC Es without expanding it. That is essentially adding a Zero-Context Example. Please read that page thoroughly and then revise these examples so that they are no longer ZCE (protip: the trope name is not context). Post your revisions here.

  • Demon Slaying: What the Special Circumstances unit is occasionally called upon for doing.
  • God Is Good: Again, it's a pro-Christian series. This trope is a given.

~Patches The Cat appeal

I saw two percentage thingys in the page code that weren't there before and thought it must be some weird bug and deleted them.

This is why we recommend that users read the notifiers they receive, as well as the accompanying administrivia. You have two notifiers for Zero-Context Examples, and that page explains the %% markup:

If you see a Zero-Context Example and can't personally expand it, the common protocol is to hide it using double-percentage markup (%% at the start of a line). This allows someone else who knows the work better to add context while keeping it invisible for the reader's sake. It is not recommended to delete these, since this has been known to lead to Edit Wars. Also, do not add Zero-Context Examples that are commented out in the hopes that someone will expand them. That's essentially just adding a regular Zero-Context Example.

idk I just assumed not much people visit new, uncompleted pages

All work pages, regardless of how large their audience is or how much traffic they get, should be up to par.

Is there some way I can know who else has edited a page so I don't do something like this again?

You can view other page editors by looking at the "history" page. It is on the same banner as the edit button.

Now that that has been cleared up, could you answer the question that was posed to you?

Let's start with the edit war - what are your options if someone changes one of your edits and you want to revert it without starting an edit war?

~Tropers/Neeku-Nekku-Nakuru-Nikua appeal

This is important here!

Let's get one thing straight first. You are not entitled to proposing Complete Monster candidates, nor are you entitled to editing the wiki. These are privileges that are extended to users as long as they follow the rules. You have not, and so you will remain suspended until we have sufficiently over the policies that you have not been following.

All this goes back to the first point — you act very entitled regarding Complete Monster. This extends to how you think other users should conduct themselves, and how specific edits should look. Before we even get to the rest of the issues, we have to emphasize that this attitude is not allowed. This is a collaborative environment — Complete Monster more than most other items — and if you are not able to play nice with other tropers, then you cannot edit. Is that clear?

~Scuba Wolf appeal

Suspensions do not have a default time limit. They last until we are convinced that you understand the problem and won't repeat it.

In your case, you have a problem in the US Politics thread. Wishing death on politicians, no matter how much you dislike them, is not allowed. Neither is raging at other users. Thumps should have gotten the message that something is not allowed, but it kept happening, hence the ban. Will you be able to conduct yourself appropriately in the future?

~Gecko 12 appeal

Your suspension is because you have repeatedly been editing an entry to say "(in)famous". That is Edit Warring and merits a suspension. The necessity or lack thereof of this specific edit aside (even on Horrible/, you shouldn't excessively complain), you are generally not allowed to redo an edit of yours without agreement or consensus from other users. Can you read Edit War and tell us where you can hold those discussions?

~Tropers/Fourthspartan appeal

Is this a deliberate decision or an oversight?

Neither, you just never posted here after this post letting us know that you actually wanted PM's back. That's a separate discussion.

In your case, you tend to get defensive in private messages after you are thumped. You repeatedly respond with "why was I punished when other users weren't". Contesting a thump once or twice is not really objectionable note , but this has happened enough times for us to think that you are probably the problem. If you want PM's back, you have to resolve to drop this behavior. If you are thumped, consider your rhetoric and how other users have been responding to it. Remember that feeling like you are the Most Correct is not as important as contributing to civil, polite conversation.

All better. The initial Wham Line example had the line, not the "wham", while the Promotion to Parent and Strong Family Resemblance examples did not clarify the relationships between the characters.

Do you have any other questions about Zero-Context Examples? Can we trust that you'll follow this policy in the future?

~Lt Fedora appeal

The policy page is Notifiers. We can't "reset your count", and you are not obliged to respond to them, but you are obliged to learn the rules so you don't get any more. Feel free to browse administrivia as necessary. Your suspension is released.

~Tropers/Thorion appeal

Right. You can also use Ask The Tropers and the forums if you want to involve outside opinions. Remember that you need to get consensus before redoing an edit. Your suspension is released.

~Blaze Flash 9726 appeal

We have an "email for PM" function that you can toggle if you go to your private messages page, though I can't personally say how well it works.

However, unless you're PM banned (you're not), if you're in a position to edit, you're in a position to read your messages. In this case, you were not messaged until you'd already readded it. The readdition is what we're trying to emphasize was against the rules — in the future, you should reach out before recreating your edit.

~Raymond 1 appeal

Yes, averting an Edit War via private messages is one such method. However, you will not always get a resolution (e.g. they don't respond, or you can't come to an agreement). Can you name one more location on this website Edit War recommends to hold discussions?

~Riley Gronlund Super Mario appeal

No. We want to make sure that you're actually changing, not just acting on your best behavior for a few weeks. Since you have exercised poor enough judgement to get suspended twice in a short amount of time, we're probably looking at a year at least. This part is not negotiable.

~Chris X appeal

Again, we'd prefer that you don't get grammar notifiers at all. Mind your Example Indentation and How Indexing Works as well, since you have more recent notifiers for those. Remember that this may be your last chance — your suspension is released.

~Rm 74 appeal

All right. There is no need to post here again until you have felt like you have had several contributions over a long period of time.

~Black Faith Star appeal

That statement wasn't directed at this site, but the server I got banned from that forbade mention of the Israeli–Palestinian Conflict before it even sparked any debates in there, but I digress.

Even if this wasn't a snipe at moderation, it's still drama importation, which...you get it. No more of that going forward.

We have no ban on Palestinian media at all. Knock yourself out. Your suspension is released.

~Trope Roper appeal

You got it. Your suspension is released.

~Mono Tom appeal

Umm...what does that have to do with our last post to you?

~Joe Merl appeal

Correct. Sometimes it's also acceptable to group works from the same franchise together under a franchise bullet, e.g.

  • Star Wars
    • Movie 1: Example
    • Movie 2
      • Example
      • Example

But each work should be on its own "parent bullet", and separate examples should be on separate bullets. Is the Example Indentation clear now?

@Synchronicity

I will follow the policy as closely as I can in the future. I also have no further questions for the Zero-Context Examples and rectify the previous three examples like this:

  • Wham Line -> Call-Forward: After Delilah collects the 42 Spider-bots that Spider-Man found all throughout New York in the side mission "The Message", her last line before disappearing is one big foreshadowing of Spider-Man's eventual meeting with the Spider Society.
Delilah: And if Miguel comes looking for these, tell him 'finders keepers.'
    Spider-Man: Wait—who's Miguel?

  • Promoted to Parent: After Earthia is rendered immobile upon her transformation into a tree, Galaxia takes up the active role of raising the then-infant Cosmo. In turn, Cosmo affectionately calls Galaxia "Onee-sama" in the original Japanese dub. [Erased]

  • Strong Family Resemblance: Galaxia looks like an older blue version of Cosmo, which makes sense as they're sisters. [Erased]

I apologize for the unintentional edit war.

I had lost track of the fact that Distaff Counterpart was my edit in the 5 days since I had added it, and that I'd therefore be the third edit in a repeating chain.

Excuses aside however, I am aware that the proper procedure for when another troper makes changes or removes to my edits that I disagree with is to try to discuss it with them via PM, or utilize the article's discussion page, or discuss it with them and/or others on Ask The Tropers, to reach a consensus.

I acknowledge my mistake and I will strive to take more care in the future to avoid this problem again.

As a quick aside, if you are willing, I would like to use this opportunity to ask for clarification regarding edits, to further my understanding and better avoid any future problems.

My understanding is that an edit war specifically occurs when specific edits are repeated (or functionally repeated)

If Troper A makes an edit, Troper B makes changes (additions/clarifications/rephrasing/etc) to it, and then Troper C removes some or all of Troper B's edit. Is it considered an edit war if Troper A then restores B's edit?

And is there any specific span of time that matters between Troper A editing something, and then repeating the edit again?

Ah, I see, those Zero Context Examples. Truth be told, I'm not very familiar with the Special Circumstances series, so I'm not able to provide much context there aside from what I could get from the rest of TV Tropes' article, but I felt that given that context, the Demon Slaying and God Is Good tropes felt self-evident enough for those pithy summations to suffice — Demon Slaying being part of the protagonists' job description, and God Is Good because it’s a Christian series and God is assumed to be benevolent by default in the Abrahamic POV. Apparently, they were not. Again, I don't actually know the series, and I don't know how much of a role God plays in it. I am legitimately confused how the Demon Slaying example is "Zero Context", since it's a thing the protagonists do and the rest of the article goes into detail on that about as well as it can. Well, I suppose there's not much to be done but to cover those back up and move on. I'll be more cautious about revising and uncovering commented-out tropes in the future.

The second thing you're asking is, "Am I permanently banned? How long will this last?" We don't have a fixed length of time on suspensions. They last until we're satisfied that the problem won't recur.

I am honestly admitting I did the wrong thing and want to promise not to try to not repeat my bad behaviour.

I think I was suspended because I posted less than 3 tropes on Dexter episode recap pages. I wasn't trying to fill out the episode pages, just simply trying to get things going by posting the tropes I could remember. I wasn't trying to create stub articles, I didn't realize it was a problem, would like to edit again. Was also unsure how to make it so at the bottom of an episode page, you have the links to the episodes before and after. Wasn't sure how to do that.

Was I rude? Yes. I admit that. Mea culpa. I was frustrated. I apologize.

As for the formatting rules: While I do try and follow them, I'm not sure I quite get the reason for the current indentation rules simply skipping straight to the secondary bullets with multiple examples of a trope. It might just be me, but it doesn't seem to do any actual space saving, nor does it look particularly organized. It just looks messy to my eye, like someone edited out the example but didn't remove the secondary examples or the trope.

Maybe that's just the obsessive-compulsive part of my mind, abhorring the wasted space.

Ah, well. Figured I'd ask, since it'd been a year. Have a good one.

First of all, I am not like those other people who directly disrespected you, you know like you said, “I am better than you, you don’t know English, profanity” all that. Secondly, I put in those edits specifically because I actually did the research like with the anime version of Wolverine not being well received. But I honestly don’t care about the Scrappy entries, because frankly they are one of my least favorites and rightly so, so go ahead and undo them. And finally, I understand that I will play nice with the other troopers and will follow the rules and will no longer make implications that I am childish and entitled like I have been lately. I thoroughly apologize for my behavior and from this point onward, I shall only do minor edits (such as grammar and missing tropes) and if you allow me, the only thing I will do in the Complete Monster forum is ask questions if I am lost or confused, but that’s obvious, you know like how does this guy count, and of course making direct proposals on what guy should be added onto there, as I have done successfully, apparently, and will gladly do again. Otherwise, you will never again see me act irresponsible like those other guys (that you already blocked, not the guys I am discussing the monsters with, just so you don’t blatantly misunderstand me again), and you will hold me to that promise, as I will too. I take full responsibility for the situation and will not deny or wrongly justify myself in any way. Sorry for all the problems and I hope you can forgive me, Synchronicity and everyone else. I hope you will allow me to fix my mistakes.

Pardon Quois? Is my recent suspension in any way related to my two attempts at trying to list Opaline Arcana from the My Little Pony (Generation 5) page as "Stupid Evil", or does it have something to do with me linking to Malty Melromarc from The Rising of the Shield Hero as an analog to compare Opaline against in-terms of exactly how Stupid Evil she is? If it should be instead listed into the YMMV category for Generation 5, I'd understand it.

…Okay, let me see if this is good for the Special Circumstances ZCEs.

  • Demon Slaying: As the header stated, the Special Circumstances unit is often tasked with solving supernatural crimes that mundane law enforcement can't handle. Sometimes this involves hunting down and dealing with demons who are causing trouble on Earth.
  • God Is Good: Well, it's a pro-Christian series, so this is a given — especially since religious faith actually does work in terms of fending off supernatural beasts and monsters.

Can I be allowed to edit again, please?
