Old Magnificent Bastard thread

Welcome to the Magnificent Bastard proposal thread! This is the thread where new Magnificent Bastard examples are vetted, approved, and written up. If you're looking for the general cleanup thread (for cuts, rewrites, expansions, and the like), please go here

Important: Before suggesting any new examples, please read the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List; if you have any questions, the odds are high they are answered there. Additionally, please check here for the earliest date a work can be discussed (usually two weeks from the U.S. release date) and whether the work has already been reserved by another user.

Here is how the process works:

    Process

  1. If you have a candidate to propose, you can simply come right in and propose them! If the character's run is brief, such as a single issue of a comic book, then a simple summary of their actions and any potential mitigating features will be enough; for longer-running candidates, an effortpost (EP) might be helpful for organizing the proposal. An EP is not outright required, but please be mindful that if a post becomes too clunky and unorganized, it can be very hard for other people to follow.

  2. After the proposal, there will be a 72-hour discussion and voting period, where people may ask questions and vote on the candidate. The number of upvotes must outnumber the downvotes by at least five for the character to be considered "approved".

  3. Three days after the proposal has been made, if the character has been approved, you may post the writeup (the text to be posted on the trope page itself) on the thread and send it to the drafts page. Your candidate will soon be added to the MB subpage. If the work has a page, you should add your candidate to the relevant YMMV page. Voila! It's that simple!

Outside of this process, we do have a few ground rules:

    Ground Rules

  1. To keep the thread moving at a reasonable pace, there are some restrictions on when a proposal can be made. There should only be a maximum of four EPs posted both per page and per hour to ensure that nothing gets lost in the shuffle; additionally, each individual troper should only be proposing or writing up characters from a maximum of three works at a time (from initial proposals to end of their voting period). If your proposal would fall outside of either of these guidelines, we'd like to ask you to please wait until they would fit within; feel free to type them up on an outside document, and then when the time comes, you can just copy, paste, and post!

  2. No plagiarism of any kind. This is a very serious matter site-wide, as the website could get in actual legal trouble over this; as a result, this can very quickly lead to mod intervention. This can take many different forms:
    1. Direct plagiarism, i.e. wholesale copying. This is not only the easiest to find, but is also the most likely to warrant quick moderator intervention. To be clear, quoting in some places is perfectly acceptable, but it has to be very clear you're quoting from something else and it cannot be anything longer than a sentence or two - if you're quoting an entire work summary from Wikipedia, no one is going to believe you've actually consumed the work, so even if you cite your source, your candidate will be downvoted anyway.
    2. Self-plagiarism. Even if you can prove that you wrote the same text in both places, the site itself can't contain any of the duplicated text. If you already wrote something once before, it's not too hard to write it a second time.
    3. Using another site's work as a template for a proposal. Just because you don't copy and paste something directly doesn't mean it's any harder to detect if you're basing parts or all of your proposal on text someone else wrote. To be clear, this doesn't violate site rules and won't lead to mod intervention, but just like if you directly plagiarize, no one will believe you've consumed the work if you're clearly basing your proposal on something else. This thread largely operates on the honor system, and tweaking someone else's work to pass it off as your own is one of the fastest ways to lose trust.

  3. Votes must be for specific candidates, meaning no blanket voting (i.e. "yes to everyone I missed").

  4. If you are the first person to downvote a candidate, please provide an explanation of why when you do so. We're here for discussions above all, and a hit-and-run downvote doesn't facilitate anything.

  5. If a work is already reserved by another user, please don't comment on the work or any potential characters worth discussion before the discussion date. We know how exciting it is when a work has a keeper that you're waiting to talk about, but it's not fair to the person who reserved the work who is just as excited to lead the discussion to see the discussion getting spoiled before they get to do it. On the other hand, if the reservation only has one name attached, shoot them a PM - they may be down for a collaboration, which will get you in on the fun as well!

  6. Please keep the thread on-topic. While discussing the trope is fun and we encourage people to enjoy it, questions like "who's your favorite MB" are off-topic and can lead to thumps. That's the kind of question to take to people's PMs if they're willing. Similarly, while we encourage friendliness and familiarity with other users, posts should always have some kind of thread-relevant purpose; for instance, if you want to wish someone a happy birthday, feel free to, but if it's the only thing in the post, it's off-topic and needs something else alongside it. Again, though, while we strive for a friendly atmosphere, this is not Facebook; life updates are fun, but unless they have some kind of impact on your thread participation, please do not bring it here - we have Yack Fest for that.

  7. Please refrain from asking anything along the lines of "How Did We Miss This One?" In almost every case, the answer is simply "No one thought about it before". This Is a Wiki where everyone has different interests, and the fact that people missed a particular candidate, even one that seems like a textbook example of a trope or a character who is particularly iconic in pop culture, means absolutely nothing. The question is disruptive, has a simple and consistent answer, and provides nothing to any discussion.

  8. If you are suspended from other parts of the website, it is still possible to participate!
    1. For users who are suspended from editing the wiki, you still have full access to this thread. You can propose candidates and write them up with no issues whatsoever; while you will have to ask someone else to post the entry to the relevant pages once it is done, all write-ups are considered thread-approved - as in, done by consensus - and thus doing so does not violate any rules regarding meatpuppeting.
    2. If you are suspended from the forums, your participation is limited but not impossible. It is still possible for a forum-suspended user to assist in creating the write-up for a character who has already been approved; as previously mentioned, write-ups are inherently considered a consensus-based edit and thus not tied to any one particular user. However, you can not assist in the proposal of a character; as a proposal is based around the forum rather than the wiki, doing so with a forum suspension qualifies as meatpuppeting.

  9. Please keep all discussions "in-house".
    1. What other wikis use for MB equivalents is irrelevant here.
    2. Please be wary of using other wikis, Fandom or otherwise, as sources of information. They are just as fallible as a site like Wikipedia in regards to accuracy because they can be edited by any user, just as this site can.
    3. Do not attempt to force a communication with an author in an attempt to gather evidence or settle a debate; besides the fact that this is a YMMV trope and thus author intent has variable weight depending on the circumstance, doing so may cross the line into drama exportation, which is prohibited site-wide.

If you would like to use an EP for your candidate, here's the general format. This format does not have to be followed exactly, but these are the main topics that need to be covered:

    Effortpost Template

What is the work?

This is a brief summary of the work you're going to discuss. We don't need a full plot summary here, just however much we need to understand going into the discussion — it can even be as simple as quoting the summary on the work's page.

Who is the candidate and what have they done?

This is essentially the character's biography — who they are, their story, their goals and methodology, and, preferably (though not required), what happens to the candidate at the end. It does not have to include every single thing they ever do — for some characters, we'd be here all day if that was the case — but it should include the highlights of their journey.

How are they Magnificent?

This is the point where you highlight the character's brilliance. How to they convey their intelligence and charm to the audience? What makes them stand out among the crowd? What are their goals and how do they go about accomplishing them? This part welcomes a lot of creative thinking — not everyone has to be a Machiavellian Diabolical Mastermind to be worth considering here! This is also the time to showcase how the character can think on their feet if it's necessary.

How are they a Bastard? How are they not too bad?

What kinds of moral lines is this character willing to cross for the sake of their goal? Are they willing to let innocents die? Start wars? Commit crimes? The character has to show some kind of unscrupulousness in order to count as a "Bastard". Notably, this character does not necessarily have to be the villain, and an Anti-Hero can cross the line if they're immoral enough, but they have to be immoral somehow.

This is also the section where you then state your case for why they're not too bad. Perhaps their good intentions help mitigate their crimes. Perhaps others are shown to be much worse than them. Perhaps they're prone to Pet the Dog moments or are even fighting on behalf of loved ones. Whatever the case, there are certain lines that an MB can't cross, but as long as their villainy is reasonable for their goal, they can be considered.

Final verdict?

This is where you post your final conclusion on the character in question. You can continue elaborating on your reasons or even just say a simple "yes" or "no"; at this point, we've heard everything we need to hear.

And that's everything you need to know. Welcome to the thread!

Hello everyone. Today I am gonna do my first MB EP here after seeing what's happening. It may take time but do let me know how did I do for this thread. For my first candidate, I will be taking a look at a crossover game and I might as well find other candidates in the PL or Ninjago series as a whole.

What's The Work

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright is a crossover game that had both beloved heroes as they solve the truth behind Labyrinthian.

Who Is She? What Has She Done?

High Inquisitor Darklaw is the main antagonist of the game.

She was a childhood friend to Espella but after the fire broke which lead to murdering everyone in the entire town she changed her name to Darklaw to keep the truth hidden from Espella who was scared of the incident as a child who was believed to be the one responsible for causing the fire and being the which Eve. She aided her father to fabricate a town named Labyrinthia. After hearing her father committed suicide she decides to get revenge on The Storyteller by revealing the truth in Labyrinthia with the help of Layton.

She disguised herself as the Great Which chasing after Espella and Carmini in the car before crashing it which lead to Espella getting kidnapped. When Layton and Luke rescued her the witches appeared to get Espella but Layton tricks them when it was really Luke. Angered Darklaw warned them before disappearing as both Layton and Luke get sucked into the book called Labyrinthia. Darklaw disguised herself as a teacher to Phoenix and Maya for Espella's trial and long story short got her a non-guilty verdict.

Knowing her plan is working the next story was about the girl burning the two men as she sends Kira to do the crime and frame Espella for the crime who was believed to be Bezella. It end's with Kira being sent to the flames. At her father's place, she disguised herself as the great which turns Layton into gold leading to Maya being framed as a witch. It didn't end well since even after being proven innocent Maya was sent to her death when saving Jean from being executed for being a witch despite not committing the crime. After talking to the storyteller she plans for the next story that Barnhan heard.

She appears as the great witch again stopping the shades from capturing Maya and Layton and then leaving the two behind so they could learn the truth behind everything. It was revealed she escaped when Barnhan gets knocked out. She does not appear until Darklaw enters Espella's mind to reveal the tragedy causing her to see visions of her past. This causes Espella to flee to the bell tower in front of everyone and then sends a massive fire dragon to her father before having her arrested for the crime. Darklaw takes the case and arrested Barnhan for treason even though he followed her to find the truth.

In the final witch trial, it's revealed that Darklaw attacked Kira when following her orders. It's her killing Espella's father the storyteller. Phoenix reveals the truth that Kira is aware of the attacker leading to Darklaw at the witness stand to testify. After Layton took the place Darklaw revealed her carrying Espella which using the invisible cloak said by Kira. Darklaw also revealed herself as the great witch and everything about the flame trick. Long story short revealed the storyteller himself is the one who ordered Kira to kill him. Layton wants to talk about the great fire leading to Darklaw leaving the stand knowing she fulfilled her goals.

Darklaw returns as it goes on revealing her true name to Espella and the daughter of the late Belduke blaming Storyteller for his death after the bell tower appeared. Espella attempted suicide but before she can Phoenix and Layton discover it was Darklaw who rang the bell instead of her causing Darklaw to flee when being told her memory was altered as well to protect both of them. Even after the truth was revealed Espella still tries to commit suicide but was saved by Eve before both of them fall when the rail breaks off. Layton and Phoenix revealed the illusion behind the town as many cranes and machines appeared.

Eve apologizes to both Espella and Story Teller for her past actions thanking Layton for revealing the truth behind Labyrinthia according to her plan. As both Phoenix and Layton leave everyone says goodbye to our heroes.

Is She Magnificent

I say she fits the bill. Darklaw is shown to not just be a competent foe but a charming character in the game as a whole. She has a solid Freudian Excuse on why she committed her acts as her father committed suicide due to having enough of the Story Teller's lies. All of her actions were not just so she could have revenge on Espella's father but also to reveal the entire truth behind Labyrinthia which in the end succeeded thanks to our heroes all while having zero sadism in them. Given what was happening it's pretty hard not to understand why Eve did these actions.

She also proved herself to be a great foe as she manages to keep Layton and Phoenix guessing who she is and even when they encountered her she does manage to get ahead of them such as having Layton save Espella for the entire chapter, intentionally having Layton be sent to Labyrinthia, tricking everyone into believing Layton was turned to gold when in reality he was kidnapped after being knocked out with the silver bells that were used by the Shades. In court, she is shown to be a tough Inquisitor when arguing against Phoenix in the trial up until he frames her for being the one who attacked Kira. When she realized Espella was going to kill herself she decides to save her life even when knowing the risk and after being saved she redeems herself when she finally lives at peace with her best friend in the end. And either way, she pretty much succeeded in revealing the truth of Laberintia no matter what given the fact she's a Xanatos Gambit which IMO is an automatic pass for the criteria.

Is She Too Much Of A Baddie

She targets Espella many times in the game such as kidnapping and framing her for Bezella and even attacks Kira at the tower when following the orders of Story Teller. But what stops her from being too much of a baddie is as I said all her actions are motivated by both her father's death and to reveal the truth behind Labyrinthian. Yes, it's true she was the one who started the great fire but the reason why that doesn't make her too heinous is due to the fact it was completely unintentional. It doesn't help the fact at the time she was a young child who didn't know this would happen making it completely accidental. After she realizes the action she not only apologizes for her past action to Espella and Story Teller but also for her revenge to be completely unforgivable redeeming herself in the end. This is pretty much why she isn't too much of a baddie in my eyes.

Final Verdict

Your choice for my first EP here. Let me know how I do explaining here.

[tup] to Darklaw.

I would like to propose Super Super Big Doctor from Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe.

Feeling inadequate next to her brothers, Super Super Big Doctor used a plant with mind control spores, which she named "Mama", to conquer the planet Feebla-Oot along with her army, imprisoning her brothers as a bonus. When Mama wilts due to a lack of Remarkalonium (carbon dioxide) and the spores start to lose their effect, Super Super Big Doctor sends vessels to numerous planets to scan for a life-form that produces the substance, one of which brings Candace and Vanessa to Feebla-Oot. Super Super Big Doctor plays to Candace's ego by declaring that she is the Chosen One who will save the planet to gain her trust, and she bonds with her over their shared feelings of inadequacy next to their brothers, all while harvesting the carbon dioxide she breathes to feed Mama. When Phineas, Ferb, their friends, and Dr. Doofenshmirtz come to rescue Candace, Super Super Big Doctor discretely has them shipped off to prison. When Candace discovers Mama, Super Super Big Doctor tells her the truth of why she brought her, even telling her what she really did with their respective siblings, thinking that she will agree with her and continue to help, and is genuinely disappointed to realize that they were not on the same page. When Candace unwittingly reveals that all humans produce carbon dioxide, Super Super Big Doctor binds Candace and forces her to continue supplying CO 2 for Mama while she moves them and the army to Earth. Landing on Earth, she holds the kids off long enough for Mama to grow strong enough to start releasing mind control spores and ultimately overpowers them even while Candace defeats her army. When Candace helps her realize that everything she did was to boost her own self-worth, she is prepared to reform on the spot.

She also displays additional honorable qualities, such as being shocked that the kids would trick her and her soldiers through song, and acts friendly toward Candace even while openly using her for her own ends and fighting her.

Didn't read about the Phineas & Ferb villain, but yeah, that ending does sound too undignified—even in an animated kids comedy.

By the way, is Colonel Sebastian Moran worth doing or do his skills and actions rely too heavily on Moriarty's orders?

Time for my next Star Wars: The Old Republic effort post. Today's EP will focus in the Jedi Consular story line, wherein the Consular takes on a more diplomatic role that the more straightforward Heroic Fantasy of the Jedi Knight class and focuses more on force based combat rather than lightsabers.

The Consular's story is split into 3 acts of which the first is widely considered the most boring saga in the MMO and consists of finding a cure to mystical sleeping plague affecting some Jedi Masters or whatever. It's irrelevant to the overarching plot line of the second and third acts which involves the Consular recruiting an organization of Separatist worlds known as the Rift Alliance into the Republic. In the shadows, however, lies a dangerous and all but unknown threat of sleeper agents from the Empire that threatens to tear the Republic apart from the inside. This also happens to be on the eve of full scale war breaking out between the Empire and Republic once again. My candidate today is the Big Bad of the Consular's story.

Who is the First Son of the Emperor?

Syo Bakarn was a force sensitive infant born into a noble family on the Republic world of Corellia. Like many force sensative infants of multiple races, Bakarn was kidnapped from his family and taken to the Sith world of Korriban to be trained as one of the Children of the Emperor. The Children were a group infused with the strength and will of the Sith Emperor who had secondary personalities bound to the Emperor hidden away in the psyches. Bakarn's intelligence and leadership impressed the Emperor enough that he was chosen the be the first of the Children and their leader and was dubbed the First Son. Bakarn was made to forget all the training he went through at the Sith Academy and returned to his parents later in his childhood. The First Son slept within Bakarn's mind until the day the Emperor would call him to do his duty to the Empire.

As the leader of the Children, the First Son was bound to other Children and mentally shielded them from detection by the Jedi and other Sith, all the while being able to guide their actions through the Force. Bakarn was eventually detected by the Jedi and the First Son subtlety guided him into ever increasing positions of power within the Jedi Order, eventually becoming a Jedi Master who sat on the Jedi High Council itself. Bakarn became a famous and beloved healer and diplomat that allowed him all manner of access to information and systems within both the Jedi and the Republic. While sleeping, the First Son remained aware of everything happening during Bakarn's life and obviously would make full use of his position in the near future. His time came during the Cold War that followed the first major conflict between the Sith Empire and the Republic.

During the Cold War, the First Son fully awakened and would possess Bakarn to give orders to the other Children to perform acts of espionage to ruin the Republic's diplomatic ties with various worlds it sought alliances with. The Children first came into contact with the Consular when the First Son orders a Child named Augin, representative of one of the worlds in the Rift Alliance, to work with the Sith Lord Kyrus to cause conflicts within the Rift Alliance to destabilize their growing relationship with the Republic. Eventually Augin and Kyrus attempted to assassinate the leaders of the Alliance to destabilize it, but both were slain by the Consular. Shortly after this, full scale war reignited between the Republic and the Empire as it often does and the First Son began to more actively take over Bakarn to guide the Children in the war effort.

The Children had infiltrated all walks of life in the Republic from Jedi to soldiers to diplomats. The First Son had the Children perform acts of sabotage and assassination all throughout the Republic where they could do the most damage, but the Consular began to hunt down the Children based on reports of sleeper agents. A Child working as a warden on the prison planet Belsavis helped to cause riots and worked to free and recruit a race of ancient aliens, where as another Child worked as ambassador to a race of Force Mystics called the Voss and tried to have the Consular killed while manipulating the Voss to the Empire's side. The Consular foiled both of these plots and during the process learned the First Son's identity as Syo Bakarn.

With his identity exposed, the First Son took full control of Bakarn and went to the world of Corellia to help the Sith conquer it. Here the First Son guided many sleeper agents in high positions, including Corellian Councilors and Jedi Knights, to capture the Guardian Holds protecting the planet. The Consular manages to retake several of the Holds while hunting the First Son and throughout tries to appeal to Master Bakarn to retake control. Eventually, the Consular is able to track down the First Son in his hidden base below one the Guardian Holds and defeats him long enough for Bakarn to retake control. In this final battle, the First Son shows respect to the Consular and states they would have made an excellent Child and ultimately fades away calmly lamenting why a being unique as him must disappear from the galaxy. Following his death, the Children are exposed and are eventually all rounded up.

Is he magnificent?

The First Son is described in-universe in his character entry as being a master strategist with truly unlimited patience, and the game itself backs this up by him fully using his high position to sabotage the Republic in and out of war and the fact that he remained hidden for most of Bakarn's life while only subtly guiding him. The split personality is calm and collected and is quite Affably Evil towards the Consular and doesn't go berserk with rage when he finally loses like many Sith Lords.

Is he a bastard?

Of course. He's an evil split personality that tries to ensure the Empire's dominion, but he is still very tame compared to what some of the Sith get up to in the game.

Final Verdict?

It's not often we get a Split Personality in here, but the First Son hits all the criteria well so I'm saying [tup].

@Lore Heh, very funny. Haha. Thanks for letting me know.

Someone I thought wasn't worth it before? I think had more going for him than I originally realized:

  • Work: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows—released in 2011, sequel to the hit 2009 Sherlock Holmes and takes more of an inspiration from The Final Problem—the most famous of all the Sherlock Holmes stories.

  • Who/What: Colonel Sebastian Moran is a disgraced soldier
    • turned efficient and extremely loyal assassin for Professor James Moriarty
    • —with Moran both entering and leaving the movie subtly taking targets out with poisoned darts fired from his cane.
    • Moran also trails Sherlock Holmes both when he prevents a bomb from taking out one target and then to Dr. John Watson's wedding to inform him of when to meet with Moriarty in person after that.
    • Moran also successfully snipes a target moments before the bomb meant to conceal the kill goes off,
    • distracts Holmes by showing him how to work a German-made gun long enough to then have him subdued,
    • shoots a cop in the way while trying to take Watson out—having given the officer the chance to move beforehand—
    • and then unleashed an arsenal to try to take Holmes; Watson and their allies out while they're escaping
    • —and with intense focus despite injury, managing to personally get a kill shot off on one at the last moment.

  • Additional Info: He's not seen again after taking out René Heron at the end of the movie. This is moments before Holmes famously sends Moriarty to his demise over Reichenbach Falls—while following him himself in the process with the intent of surviving—as well. Moran presumably will be back in the next one and wanting to seek revenge on Holmes for taking out Moriarty.

  • Magnificent: Moran is undeniably smart and impressively professional, proves to be more than just a blunt tool Moriarty uses to do his bidding, proves to be adaptable to situations and focus his skills and is so successful in his endeavors that it's clear he's a big part of helping Moriarty be able to pull things off at every turn.

  • Bastard/Too Much: Commits multiple murders and is instrumental in Moriarty nearly starting WWI in order to profit off providing the weapons—and keeping loose ends out of it means at least two times he kills regardless of either momentary success or failure, but Moran is doing his job and serving his boss rather than having any kind of overly personal, greedy or cruel interest in the plan; while becoming enraged at Moriarty nearly getting crushed by a brick smokestack Watson knocks over, it's absolute proof that he cares about Moriarty himself and will do anything for him; he still proves to be personable in circumstances when he's not killing somebody at the moment and his waiting a little bit before killing the cop—in the hope that he'd move first—also expresses how he won't kill anyone unnecessarily either unless they're either a target or wrong place, wrong time.

  • Verdict: Granting him a [tup].

Preemptive Writeup:

  • Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows: Colonel Sebastian Moran is a disgraced soldier turned efficient and extremely loyal assassin for Professor James Moriarty—with Moran both entering and leaving the movie subtly taking targets out with poisoned darts fired from his cane. Moran also trails Sherlock Holmes both when he prevents a bomb from taking out one target and then to Dr. John Watson's wedding to inform him of when to meet with Moriarty in person after that. Moran also successfully snipes a target moments before the bomb meant to conceal the kill goes off, distracts Holmes by showing him how to work a German-made gun long enough to then have him subdued, shoots a cop in the way while trying to take Watson out—having given the officer the chance to move beforehand—and then unleashed an arsenal to try to take Holmes; Watson and their allies out while they're escaping—and with intense focus despite injury, managing to personally get a kill shot off on one at the last moment.

Yea to First Son and Moran but I’d like to see a writeup not getting to such plot summary levels in his actions there future.

[tup] First Son

With this bit for Moran:

shoots a cop in the way while trying to take Watson out—having given the officer the chance to move beforehand

He "doesn't give" the officer a chance. Morans in a tower with a sniper and the guard is just doing his job and asking why Watson is there before Moran picks him off with a "I warned you" remark after.

I genuinely don't know with Moran based on my memory of the film. It's a little foggy.

Oh, Mr. Kennedy, you entertain me. To show my appreciation, I will help you awaken from your world of clichés.
