It came to my attention in an Ask The Tropers query that Pet-Peeve Trope is No On-Page Examples instead of a Definition-Only Page, and I think allowing examples from audiences would result in Troper Tales-like examples (aside from examples on profile pages). However, making it In-Universe Examples Only was also suggested, and it turns out that most wicks are already in-universe. I don't have a strong opinion on whether we make this IUEO or definition-only, but I'm leaning toward the former, and I'm against allowing Audience Reactions on YMMV pages (though examples on tropers' profile pages could stay).

  • 37/50 are in-universe examples.
  • 1/50 is an audience reaction.
  • 12/50 are miscellaneous wicks instead of examples, such as wicks in descriptions or indexes.

Wick check here.

If it's already mostly being used for in-universe examples, I see no harm in making it IUEO.

IUEO is fine by me, since it's how most tropers are using it anyway.

If changed to IUEO, we can probably also allow examples on the trope page again.

Absolutely. I actually meant to mention that we could remove it from No On-Page Examples when making it IUEO, and at least take examples I found in the wick check to populate the on-page example list when removing that restriction, and maybe crosswick other in-universe examples as they're found during wick cleanup, but I apparently forgot to mention that because it was late at night when I made this thread.

What about creators? I have read the entries on Zero Punctuation. I think we should allow examples for individual creators. Plus I never really thought it would be a YMMV trope.

If this becomes IUEO, does that mean creators expressing their dislike of a trope won't count? Or is that considered an in-universe example?

[up] I'd imagine it depends on the context of how it's presented in their material, but I'm not so sure.

Anyway, also voting for IUEO.

If it becomes IUEO, would it stop being YMMV? And what's the deifference between it and Berserk Button?

A character has to get irrationally angry for it to count as a Berserk Button. Pet-Peeve Trope doesn't require that level of anger. Simple annoyance or stated dislike will do.

Yeah, Berserk Button was a whole other thread.

I agree with the notion to make it In-Universe Examples Only.

OK, to answer the questions that came up:

  • This would stop being YMMV if it becomes IUEO. The two are mutually exclusive with each other, and the latter takes priority over the former.
  • Examples from creators would be allowed, so the Zero Punctuation examples would be allowed to stay (especially because Zero Punctuation is a work, and we're keeping examples from works). We'd just be forbidding examples from audience members who aren't creators, including specific tropers (aside from listings on Tropers/ pages), which would be anything on YMMV/ subpages.

Calling in favor of making this IUEO. However, we need to hold another vote regarding whether to allow on-page examples, since after discussion with the other mods, that has to be decided separately from making it IUEO.

Calling in favor of allowing on-page examples. I'll remove it from No On-Page Examples, but I don't feel like adding any on-page examples yet; we could probably crosswick examples from the wick check as a starting point.

I made Pet Peeve Trope Wick Cleaning to keep track of wick cleanup since we're not removing everything. Make sure to crosswick valid wicks when going through work page namespaces.

Edit from later: I crosswicked examples the wick check picked up, so there are at least some on-page examples now.

Crown Description:

Consensus was to make Pet Peeve Trope In Universe Examples Only. Allowing on-page examples was also discussed since examples are now limited to in-universe ones. Should on-page examples be allowed as well?
   22 (Yeas:22 Nays:0)
Allow on-page examples of Pet-Peeve Trope? These would still be limited to In-Universe examples.
