The Web Original namespace -- is it necessary?

Similar problem with Art/ and Advertisement/, some are just too short to be standalone.

Well, Art/ is difficult because in most cases a single picture does not tell a story. But the ones that do, yeah, I'd be all for giving them a page.

Advertising/ tends to be about specific campaigns, which seems better anyway because typically, many of the ads a company puts out will be similar in presentation and tone and everything.

ARG/ is the worst one, mostly because it tends to be a niche genre.

Actually, that's not true. LARP/ is the worst one, and I was planning on bringing that one up for cleanup in the future. It's barely thriving, and seems redundant with Roleplay/, down to having the same verifiability issues.

Yeah, LARP/ can be moved into roleplay.

ARG/ is one I'd like to flesh out more, except that despite how much I love them I'm rarely ever able to actually get involved with them and there are many I don't know enough about to trope.

Merging LARP/ with Roleplay/ is very tempting, but it needs a separate thread, and this thread may need to re-focus on decentralized web works question.

Okay, I'll break out the big question then.

More work pages keep being added to this namespace, and most of them are misused or low-quality. What can we do to stop this from happening?

I still think a Multimedia/ namespace could be good for some of the more questionable Web Original/ cases (questionable as in "hard to define", not "barely tropeworthy"). Going back to WebOriginal.Cat Ghost, the reason it's in web original at all is because while it is a web animation series, each episode was released with a downloadable flash-game that was an equal part of the experience, most of them needing to be played in order to unlock clues and learn more about the plot. There are some things in some videos that simply don't make as much sense unless the video game information was known, making the games an integral part of the experience.

Edit: As for the "low quality pages question", all we really can do is continue to curate the namespace and cut/move whatever doesn't belong.

Aside from the ones brought up, not off the top of my head. I did think of Film.This House Has People In It, but that really probably ought to be in ARG instead... or web video... ehhh I might need to make a thread just to discuss that one because it's weird.

I suppose Cat Ghost and Wyoming Incident could also go in ARG/, but the question is I guess, where is the line drawn between a "normal" ARG and one that's, say, centralized on YT or a forum thread?

I guess the line we need to draw here is for works like 17776. What goes under Literature/? Should creepypasta go there? Should web original stories go there? We already moved the Navy Seal Copypasta there, so I don't see why not.

I admit, I made a page for WHAT COLOR ARE YOU?, an online quiz. Where would that go if we got rid of Web Original?

It's one of two that I have no idea where I'd put. The other is that other quiz Twiddler made a page for.

Web Original isn't getting cut, so the page is fine. However, it had to go elsewhere, maybe Website?

I think it's in Literature/, yeah.

The fact that a good portion of 17777 is told via video, not writing, means to me it shouldn't be put in Literature/. Same thing with Homestuck and Webcomic/.

IMO, if enough of a work's the story is told in different mediums that you flat out can't understand the work if you only read the parts for a single medium, it doesn't belong in that medium's namespace.

Homestuck should stay where it is. It's primarily a webcomic, even if some parts of it aren't in that form. As for 17776, it fits best into Literature/.

WebOriginal/ is a last resort for things which can't fit anywhere else.

I've brought up the other thing, but now that I'm reminded about it I'll queue both.

Discovered Fan Verse and remembered the "collaborative works aka pages about unspecified amount of works on the same topic" conversation. Do these fanfics work the same?

Trollge is poorly troped and IMO not really worth keeping even if it weren't. Most of the works falling under its label are low-effort variations on a meme template, and a few seem no longer accessible online. There are a few more substantial works based on it, including several Friday Night Funkin' Game Mods which already have pages here.

Surreal Memes are much more varied in content despite being obviously meme-based, and could perhaps be preserved as a genre page following the model of YouTube Poop. It also covers multiple webcomics and video series that I think could easily be troped on their own, though the only one that has a page now (Riddle Of The Rocks Saga) is an underdeveloped stub.

We do still need a call on whether meme videos whose visuals are barely if at all animated crude drawings and photomanipulations belong in WebVideo/ or WebAnimation/.

I just checked out Trollge and I'm a bit more partial to it. The wiki timeline has been archived.

The first video I watched has a troll kill ants then cuts to the troll as a cosmic entity in 2033. The second trollge video I found, GOD OF EARTH INCIDENT is a minute long, establishes a short story, character motives (becoming rich), and a few horror tropes (apocalypse, Nightmare Face, Black Speech, distorted sounds).

There's a lot of stuff happening here, which I think would be lost if we required each video or creator to have their own page just to compile tropes anywhere.

I think videos focused on the drawings should be Web Animation, and live-action if the focus is on live-action photos. It can be hard to draw the line, but that's what we do when deciding which side of the Roger Rabbit Effect a work is on.
