Thread current status:
It has been agreed by crowner to merge the Light Novel/ namespace into Literature/.
LightNovel namespace index -- excludes redirects
It has been agreed by crowner that Light Novel examples are to be sorted on trope pages as follows:
- If you're adding an example with LN in mind, place it in Literature.
- If you're adding an example from an Anime/Manga, but unsure if it was present in LN, place it in Anime/Manga.
- If you're adding an example from an Anime/Manga, but know it also happened in the source, place in in Literature.
- If you're adding an example from an Anime/Manga, and sure it did not happen in the source, place it in Anime/Manga even if the work is already listed in Literature.
- If you're moving an example, for example when renaming or handling redirects, and don't know much about other versions, instead just leave it where it was.
- If you know all versions of the work, move examples to the medium they're first featured in.
- Webcomic examples with adaptation go to either Webcomics or Anime/Manga following the above logic.
- Web Serial Novel are still Literature.
- There is to be no dedicated Light Novel folder or subpage on trope pages.
Edge case rulings:
- Due to extreme differences with the original Web Serial Novel, Overlord (2012) will be the hub page for the Overlord Light Novel and its adaptations. Overlord 2010 will cover the WSN.
Original post below.
This has now come up twice in Ask The Tropers in the past year that I know of.The issue is pretty straightforward: where do we put examples from Light Novels on trope pages?
General options previously proposed:
- Put them in Anime and Manga since they're commonly adapted into them.
- Base things on the original medium, and group them with Literature.
- Take a Third Option and create a Light Novel folder.
Points about this media space that are commonly raised:
- The manga and especially anime adaptations tend to be more available and more familiar to the Western audiences that comprise most tropers.
- The adaptations into manga and anime are usually very faithful Compressed Adaptations, so most trope examples apply to all versions.
ETA: Related issue that came up:
- Should the Light Novel namespace be merged into Literature?
Here's a link to pages that are in the LightNovel/ namespace.

This was addressed already but if you aren't sure if you are only familiar with the light novels anime/manga adaptations, it's fine to add your example to Anime/Manga folder. Basically, either Anime/Manga or Literature will work for examples that apply to both the original novel and its adaptations.
In that paragraph, I was talking about specifically about wick cleaning but I should probably say something about example placement too.

Macron's notesSo nothing really changed. Ok then, good to know.

Sounds right?
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupThat's right. Nice way to break it down
Macron's notes
I'd also wonder if it might be best (often already done) that if you are adding an example from an adaptation that you know was not in the source work, the example text would explicitly note "In the <adaptation>..." on the work page.

Some Characters/ pages have a bold note "please provide in context the version the example applies to, the game, novelization or web series". I think it's a good point to upgrade Examples Are Not General, but that's outside this thread's point.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupWay ahead of you.
If an example is present enough in all adaptations (say, The Rising Of The Shield Hero which has a web novel, light novel, anime, and manga), can/should it just be moved to a Multimedia folder?
One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord. So if, say, there's a light novel Complete Monster example, that's not in an anime/manga adaptation, it should be placed in Literature?
(Also, what again was the decision with namespace? Make Literature?)
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsYes and “merge LN into Literature”.
One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.I'd say the one that came first (web novel).
1. Yes. 2. We're moving all LightNovel/, but there's some thinking regarding moving history and discussion.

TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupSo LightNovel.Date A Live will be moved to Literature.Date A Live?
EDIT: Also, answering my own question from awhile back: Matthew Reilly's novels tend to have a fair amount of pictures.

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsYes, when the page gets moved there.
Macron's notesYes.

Well, there are cases where people have proposed examples from an anime adaptation of an LN without having looked at the original, so it is possible that they only count in the anime and the LN has something disqualifying. In that case, according to the rules (“If you're adding an example from an Anime/Manga, but unsure if it was present in LN, place it in Anime/Manga”) it is okay to leave it where it is for now until someone looks into the LN.
One of these days, all of you will accept me as your supreme overlord.Yes. Not many people are familiar with the light novel and even less web novel, so unless someone is willing to confirm, it's fine to put proposals/examples into Anime if that's what the troper is familiar with.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupIt would be unfair to make a troper look for and view work B before they could add an example from work A, if they only know work A.
This goes back to the discussion we had before: nobody is expected to be omniscient about these works and in the worst case scenario someone will just fix mistakes or move stuff later if they're knowledgeable enough to do so.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessPreferably, people should maybe be specifying an episode or volume number in trope examples where possible. And I've made a practice with LN sources of specifying in the work page description which volumes are adapted (e.g. Torture Princess only has a manga of the first volume, Realist Hero has anime of the first four volumes, etc.), so that can help narrow it down.
Crown Description:
Can you provide an example placement demonstration of what you mean, please? With just that paragraph alone, I'm still confused as to where I should start putting LN examples.
