"Moments" cleanup and maintenance (Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming, Shocking, Tear Jerker)

Go To

See here for Nightmare Fuel, which has frequent enough problems to deserve a thread of its own.

A while ago, I made a thread for cleaning up Nightmare Fuel pages, since they tend to attract all sorts of gushing about anything vaguely unsettling, as well as violations of Example Indentation and the Spoiler Policy among other problems. Well, other Moments pages have similar issues, though to a slightly lesser extent, so they may as well have a cleanup thread too.

"Moments" reactions should:

  • Be free of spoiler tags, in accordance with the Spoilers Off policy which states that:
Fridge, Headscratchers, and the various Moments subpages (Tear Jerker, Moment of Awesome, etc.) are for post-viewing discussions. Spoiler tagging there defeats the purpose of the articles. You shouldn't be going there if you are worried about them.
  • Be based on things that actually have happened, not things that could happen, will happen, or might have happened. Speculation belongs only on the Wild Mass Guessing pages.
  • Have affected the writer of the entry themselves. If you don't find something funny or sad, let someone who did add it to Funny Moments or Tear Jerker.
  • Elicit a strong reaction. Not every single time a character accomplishes something is an Awesome Moment, not every attempt at comedy is a Funny Moment, not every time someone does something nice is a Heartwarming Moment, and not every unhappy event is a Tear Jerker.
  • Explain why they're so awesome/funny/sad: Zero Context Examples aren't allowed on this wiki. Your description should allow anyone to understand your reaction.

Survivor has an entire folder dedicated to "Moments off of the show", filled to the brim with real-life examples about the (former) contestants (i.e. two characters who previously had Romance on the Set breaking up, substance issues not seen in the show, deaths of ex-contestants in general, and even "For those who don't hate Richard Hatch, his financial issues after the show could be considered this").

I'd cut all of that. Meta information shouldn't be included on moments pages; if it didn't happen in the show, then it can't be listed.

While looking through the Shocking Moments subpages, I noticed that the subpage for Tokimeki PokéLive! and Twin Bee is Shocking Moments/

For other subpages, it is merely Shocking/

Does this need to be rectified

It sucks that we won't see the series, but it seems to be another shoehorn pertaining to Chadwick Bosemans passing

On the topic of Boseman, is there any other real person whose Creator Page was put under lock due to excess gushing? Because I know it happened to him.

Ok, Looking through the history for Locked Pages, this apparently happened with Christina Hendricks and Satoru Iwata

Awesome.Rhythm Heaven is entirely about player actions. There is some awesome stuff in the games proper but this page feels like self-congratulatory misuse, saying that player unlocks in general are "awesome moments."

From Tear Jerker:

  • Minecraft Dungeons: Upon beating the Heart of Ender, you’re treated to a cutscene of the Orb of Dominance shattering in the Arch-Illager’s hands. That’s not the Tearjerky part. The Tearjerky part is when Archie is shown cowering in fear before the heroes. It’s a stark reminder of who Archie really is: a child. A child caught in a whirlwind of anger and suffering, and nearly died because of it. Fortunately, the cutscene turns Heartwarming when the heroes lift Archie to his feet.

The Arch-Illager isn't a child. And the part where he is scared is really short. This is very likely a shoehorn.

The only on-page example is not only a ZCE, it's too general ("Any time X happens"). Upon checking the edit history, the only edit made to the page after the day it was created (by a troper whose last edit was on the same day) was to remove a dewicked trope. I think the page can be safely cut.

Edit: Upon digging deeper, the page was made by a ban evader (per ATT thread). So, yeah, it's getting cutlisted.

Question: I've encountered some Moments pages that have very few spoiler-tagged entries (in some cases, exactly one or two.) Should I remove the spoiler tags should I encounter any more?

EDIT: Right after I write this, I encounter a page with tons of spoiler-tags. Now I think the rules regarding spoilers are more complicated than I thought. Should I still remove all the tags?

I think so, yeah. Or it's just people who don't bother to read the rules. (I've personally seen people add spoilered out entries to Nightmare Fuel pages after I removed all the spoiler tags and put a note at the top of the page saying Nightmare Fuel pages are Spoilers Off).

To clarify: The page with "tons of spoiler tags" I was referring to before was the Awesome page for Ace Attorney Dual Destinies...and I wasn't kidding when I said it had tons of tags.

The page was created in May 2013 - five months before its English release and one month before its Japanese release - which gives more credence to my theory that said page creation occurred before spoiler tags on Moments subpages were banned.

Found some questionable content on this page... last edited 3 years ago. I remember watching this movie at least 17 times as a kid, and it contains precisely zero actual sad stuff and the troper who made the page is blowing stuff out of proportions, like, really?

Anyway, enough with the rant: TearJerker.Small Soldiers

  • "Nick Nitro's battery has run out. But his memory will keep going, and going, and going. His death will be avenged!" — ZCE, although I do remember the scene in question and isn't the character in question a villain?
    • The final scene. — ZCE. I know the context that it's regarding the "Goodbye" scene, but as a kid I see that as a "Happy" moment because the other soldiers are free to go on their own adventures and whatnot.
  • Meta example, this was Phil Hartman's last movie before his wife killed him. — "Meta" example... easy CUT.
  • Minor, but Troglokahn's destruction caused Archer to lament in grief. Subverted later when the Gorgonites fix him.Nope, not sad, the character in question isn't even a major character. And yes it does sound shoehorned...

Anyway, any objections on shredding the page?

The four examples can easily be summarised as:

  • An out-of-context quote.
  • A ZCE.
  • A meta example (which, if they're seen on "moments" pages, are cut on sight nowadays).
  • And an example that is not only subverted in the end, the entry even admits it's a minor example.

So, you're right, none of the examples are worth keeping, so I've cutlisted the page, giving the reasons discussed here.

Yet another "This index even necessary?" subpage.

The TearJerker.Alien page serves as an Index, while the sole other example is an "XYZ actor died in real life" shoehorn... opinions?

And then, another old sci-fi horror flick which somehow warrants a whole TJ page for its own, Beware The Blob

* The scene where the kitten gets devoured by the Blob is heartwrenching — Does the kitten even have a name?
