It does depend on the radar system; Germany censors, for example, have a quite different approach to rating violence than do ratings agencies in other countries, an approach which makes it seem like Germany is simultaneously stricter and more lenient. Similarly, an adult drinking alcohol is acceptable in most of the world, but might well be radar-dodging in a Muslim theocracy. But a list of guidelines for what is usually not radar-dodging has merit.
Off the top of my head...
- Marriage of any description
- People having children
- A character finding somebody attractive
- Exposed skin outside of the face and hands
- Women having breasts
- Non-sexual nudity
- Nudity which is indicated but not shown
- Invisible nudity
- Kissing
- An adult drinking alcohol
- Underwear
- Bleeped-out or otherwise censored cursing
- Calling a woman a witch
- Invectives which aren't curses
- Using inoccuous words in place of curses
There's also the wealth of non-examples that are just "this work has stakes", which we saw in the Paw Patrol examples.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessI'd also add Ho Yay and other jokes relating to homosexuality, especially in media that would likely not prohibit LGBT material (such as post-2014 American children's media).
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.Well, Ho Yay is by definition in the eye of the beholder, but there is Homoerotic Subtext for when it's intentional. But I do agree it should be on the list, perhaps with a note that it's a trait whose acceptability has changed with time. One of the cited examples is Korrasami, since we have that blog post from Bryan Konietzko about how they had to dance around Nickelodeon's censors to get it in; that, of course, pushed the envelope far enough to open the door to open homosexuality in children's media.
Ukrainian Red CrossDouble posting because I've been removing examples in the Westernanimation/ namespace, and I found this on Westernanimation.Aqua Teen Hunger Force:
- Getting Crap Past the Radar: Literally, with the first appearance of the Plutonians. Oglethorpe refers to Emory as a "scheisse kopf" (bad German for "shit head)." The Network noticed it, after it aired.
This is valid if true, since it evidently did violate the network's rules about cursing. Unfortunately, the only references I can find for it are this wiki and All The Tropes. I don't suppose anybody is more familiar withATHF can point me to a source?
Ukrainian Red CrossI must say cut.
It is an [adult swim] original, which as its name implies, doesn't exactly have a radar.
I would like consensus as well as I'm unfamiliar with anything on [adult swim].
Aside: Canadian [adult swim] is 24/7 (and has a radar during daylight hours), rather than only during the night.

Kirby is awesome.I'm pretty sure [adult swim] does have a radar. Even TV shows rated up to TV-MA have restrictions, though said restrictions are obviously way more lenient than those for kids programming. Plus I think [adult swim] likes to tow the TV-14 line when it's convenient.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?According to IMDB, episodes varied from TV-PG to TV-MA; in Canada, it went from PG to 18. According to the wiki, that episode was rated TV-PG. America's TV-PG rating does allow for occasional cursing.
The example seems to be describing a circumvention of Adult Swim's internal policies, but again, I can't find any reference to this happening on either the fan wiki or Wikipedia, nor do web searches turn up anything. I've already removed it from the page, so it's probably best to just leave it.
Ukrainian Red CrossI still want to back to the Buffy page, most of the examples are things that are either not subtle or things that were always on the radar in the first place (the constant sex). I still propose it should be removed, especially considering things like Simpsons and Family Guy who target the same age group don't have a page.
Just found the following reference to the trope in the description of Bare Your Midriff and woundered if it was legitimate:
By all means.
Tropers seem to have the idea that a character being attractive is verboten, and that all ratings agencies everywhere are only slightly less strict than the House of Saud. Exposed belly buttons are periodically fashionable with teenage girls (and in India it's part of traditional, modest women's dress), so that can definitely be cut.
In other news, I've gone through most of the Westernanimation/ namespace; only the series that start with P, Q, and R are left. I've added the Transformers examples to a section on Canadian TV classifications, so I'm going to cutlist the Transformers Radar/ pages.
Also, today I learned that each Canadian province has its own system for rating movies.

Ukrainian Red CrossI am guessing the part of the description that says Bare Your Midriff is popular in Bollywood as it is the most they can get away with should be removed or rewritten then?
Knowledge is Power, Guard it WellHey, was the Pokemon Anime page discussed here? Someone on ATT is concerned about the cut.
Remember guys, always link to this thread and/or the TRS thread when cleaning up.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessIt was, but not in full. It was also cut before we decided to cut it. Which is a bummer as a lot of the dub stuff would have fit Demographically Inappropriate Humor just fine. I think it's archived though.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe. And if not, we can always ask a mod to share its contents with us.
That ATT thread reminds me that Radar.Pokemon is unsalvageable and needs to be axed.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?To avoid history repeating, we should probably go through it bit-by-bit before cutting. Much of this can go on DIH.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I've already read the page multiple times and there's almost nothing worth keeping under the new definition — there are no citations and examples largely boil down to innuendo. If you want it for DIH you should just copy the contents of the entire page into a sandbox for a transplant.

If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with? We've had this conversation before. We want to sort through these pages before we get rid of them.
I'm not going to try and kill the page until I know you guys have what you need for DIH and we're all on the same page.
If a tree falls in the forest and nobody remembers it, who else will you have ice cream with?Oh, yeah, prematurely cutlisting Radar.Pokemon Anime was my bad. The examples were all Tropers intentionally trying to make Pokémon look dirty but I do realise it should have had a proper discussion first.
I decided to do a bit of statistical analysis on uses of Getting Crap Past the Radar. This is based on the Related To page before I took a machete to some of the namespaces, which are stricken out. Funny/ is in there too because by the time I realised I'd included it, I didn't want to start all over again.

From the Wakfu page:
- In Episode 8, the watchers may learn more than they wanted about Ruel's marital life. After capturing him and tying him up, Arpagone gags Ruel with a ball-gag.
Is the use of ball-gags generally considered sexual in nature? In my opinon they can just as easily be used in fiction without any sexual connotations. And as far as im aware, the scene in question didn't really have anything sexual in mind- ignoring the fact that Wakfu is basically Getting Crap Past the Radar: The Show (yes, it really, really is).
Edited by KingOfStickers on Dec 26th 2020 at 1:28:03 PM
I mean, admittedly the internet has pretty much ruined my perception of things like ball-gags, but even then I'm not sure it's always intended to be sexual.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure Pureness
Would it be worth making a list of things that aren't Radar, for the analysis page perhaps? As in, "here's what this trope isn't"?
