Hey, have you ever noticed that one of Magnificent Bastard's alt titles is just "Film."

It's MagnificentBastard.Film, actually, but the link formatting doesn't show that on the main page.

Speaking of disambiguation: As understandable as removing those tropes were, I will miss reading their Main pages before getting deleted. Then again, we have the Wayback machine, so there's that.

Is it possible for the mods to check if someone is using a bot to post on the forums?

They can look at IP logs and also can look at how the user signed up

I don’t think there’d be any point to using a bot on these forums in any way that wouldn’t be immediately obvious anyway.

Bots have been caught before but they're usually just spam and advertisement bots.

You know, I'm kind of amazed Xanatos Gambit has yet to be renamed considering its an absolutely awful name. I had not heard of Gargoyles until I came to TV Tropes and the same is true of many people.

I think it's one of those tropes where, while the name is objectively bad, people on the site understand what it means so renaming is sort of pointless.

I've been considering taking it to TRS but I can't think of a way to phrase it that sounds good. The only way I can think to phrase it is "Not that many people remember Gargoyles" and I'm afraid people will take offense to that for some asinine reason.

I mean, see Trope Renaming Guidelines. The name has to be causing some sort of obvious problem to be renamed; otherwise it's just not worth the effort.

Do Wick Checks only include Work Pages or does it include every page with a wick (Trope, Moment, etc)? It's very unclear?

Any page with a wick, as long as it's accessed from the related page. And keep in mind, you typically only need about 50-100 of them depending on how large the trope is — all randomly chosen, which is why the namespace doesn't actually matter.

Feel free to check out the Wick Check Project sandbox to see examples of wick checks others have done / are doing; sometimes it's easier just to see how others do it.

On the subject of the Wick Check Project, this discussion regarding doing a wick check for Xanatos Gambit ought to be taking place in the Wick Check Project thread.

But yeah, we take an "innocent until proven guilty" with trope names. "I don't like the name" isn't enough of a reason to change it; we need evidence of a problem first.

And as for the bot discussion, spambots are bounced when they're caught. I'm pretty sure someone brought up a spambot in this thread several months ago and I thumped its posts and bounced the account.

Edit: And speaking of renamings, I'm glad that the page for when to rename a trope had its own name changed from Everything You Wanted to Know About Changing Names to Trope Renaming Guidelines because the original name was ridiculously clunky and violated pretty much every component of Clear, Concise, Witty, and the name didn't even indicate that it's specifically for trope names.

Speaking of Wick Checks, I wonder how many Sandboxes are out there that are, like, Wick Checks people started but never finished and didn't bother linking to the Wick Check Project page.

I'd say several, including every wick check I've ever done, because the ones I've done were one-man projects and weren't part of the project. The sandbox is just for ones done through the thread. I currently have some unfinished wick check sandboxes that I've been holding off on doing until I have the motivation to check the wicks (I have the list of wicks ready; I just haven't done the checking part), but still intend to finish at some point.

I have several I've done through the thread that I never bothered to link on the sandbox because I finish too fast for it to matter.

Those are all finished ones, though.

No; the second folder is all wick checks that are currently in the middle of being worked on.

Also, speaking of TRS, I don't regret giving the go-ahead to rename Dan Browned to Falsely Advertised Accuracy because I started doing some wick cleanup a bit ago (after taking a break from wick cleanup after handling some other projects), because you could make a drinking game out of the misuse that either potholes the old name in place of the former Trope Namer (even though there's no reason why Creator.Dan Brown couldn't be linked to instead) or just uses the term to refer to errors without mentioning whether the creator(s) said the work was accurate (which is why the rename happened to begin with).

I sometimes forget to link my wick checks to the Sandbox. I only just wicked my Camera Screw wick check there.

No, I meant yours are. Not that the ones on Wick Check Project are. I read the page.
