Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

I'm not sure what to do with The Sheik. Valid points or complaining?

On the other hand, The Hottie And The Nottie needs cleanup badly — gets compared to Birth Of A Nation.

[up] Wow. From what I can tell, the page does have a point, in that the movie is really, really terrible. But the comparisons at the top of the page seem a bit much.

I'm not sure what to do either.

Took a stab at that page. Might work on some of the rest later.

Do I need to put a banner on The Clique pages? At least once per week some type of bashing shows up (Either towards the fans or the writer).

I mean look at this, I get that Drinking Game pages are supposed to be snarky but should it look like such an obvious attempt to complain?

Anime might need some cleaning.

Laconic. To Aru Majutsu No Index is a complaint, but has 29 inbounds. Rewrite or cutlist?

Probably cutlist or wait until somebody familiar with the series can come up with something more neutral.

[up][up] Does the show have a forum thread? You could post there. Or on the discussion page for the primary article.

[up][up][up][up] I suggest "Anti-Magic teenager, living in a city of scientifically created espers, discovers the world of magic and gets involved in a series of cases."

Or

"Anti-Magic teenager fights magicians and espers, former Serial Killer and Super Power Lottery winner fights for redemption, and Badass Normal just tries to survive with his girlfriend."

On a different topic, it's just me who sees Audience Reactions a bit too negative?

Is it my bias as being one myself, or is the description of Fangirl a bit too loathing?

[up]No, it definitively sounds like "fangirls are stupid" to me.

[up][up] Yeah, the way it's written, it comes across as "all fangirls, even the non-overzealous ones, are bad." Speaking of, Fanboy should be looked over, too.

Experience has taught me to investigate anything that glows.

Just came across Soulless Shell. The description contains statements like "Luckily Leif is on a date nearby with his fangirl Maiomi, who is supposed to be seventeen but acts seven because the author can't write female characters convincingly". If someone has time to spare, the page could use some clean-up.

About the fanboy/fangirl thing: I've fixed a few misuses of Shotacon that implied that fans of certain characters were a little too much into little boys... There's express and implied bashing all over the wiki.

BrokenBase.Politics

Seems like it's just a political debate.

BrokenBase.Politics, BrokenBase.Religion, and BrokenBase.Other need to be cut.

Personally, I'd just as soon treat the entire Broken Base Audience Reaction as Flame Bait and cut all exmples, but surely we can at lease agree on cutting out Politics and Religion.

Omigosh we actually had a page for Religion on a subjective trope that wasn't outright positive?

I am surprised that these pages don't look like a Flame War yet.

Also, I pruned a bit of the tone in Audience Reactions and added a Not A Trope wick.

I don't see negativity on BrokenBase.Religion. Terrible formatting, yes, but it doesn't seem like flamebait

I think BrokenBase.Religion could use some trimming for natter and hyperbole, and it might be better off merged into BrokenBase.Real Life. There are legitimate examples, there, though—I mean, it's hard to contest "Sunni vs. Shia" or "Protestant vs. Catholic" as Broken Bases. That's as broken as it gets.
