Oh yes, the infamous mission from Armored Core For Answer. Video Game Cruelty Potential at its "finest".

... And I can't help but notice that each of those giant airborne vessels don't start terminally falling until you destroy the last engine, as if it was somehow able to carry all that vessel's weight on its own.

I think what happens there is that, with the upper engines gone, the upper block falls down and crushes the lower engines.

Or at the very least unbalances the airship enough that it dips too far forward and either nosedives into the ground, or the angle of attack becomes so great that it goes into a stall. Or both.

But considering how much of a Crapsack World this incident ended up spawning - what with, if I was informed right, FA being the prequel of the entire franchise, meaning that it sequeled into centuries of chaos and near-uninterrupted corporate warfare -, this is most definitely dark.

Like, Rebuild Q dark.

Man... that quote...

I gotta use that in SCE. And I know just the way, even though it doesn't involve a Heroic Team Revolt. Want details?

Well, it's not like defending the Cradle in Path A gives you a better ending. All you did was reinforce everyone's conviction that the Cradle plan is the "right" solution, a belief that renders humanity blind to the rising Kojima Particle-based pollution until it actually reaches even those supposed safe havens, and by then it's almost certainly too late for them to begin space colonization en masse, let alone think of another solution. Who knows what that would eventually lead to.

At least Path B offers a true bright spot... unless it's supposed to be a prelude to the Mars-based installments, that is.

Something to keep in mind is that Verdict Day definitively reveals it and V take place in the same universe as 4/4A, though never confirmed to come before the rest*. Which means that civilization likely got itself wrecked and then rebuilt before getting torn down again in V. Regardless of the path chose in 4A it probably didn't help all that much.

I can see a lot of crossover/fusion potential here if only because both** settings are cynically depressing wastelands with only a thin veneer of civilization left.

(*there's good arguments either way about the exact timeline, though I personally thing Verdict Day is definitely at the current far end)

(**okay yes Evangelion does make it seem at times like civilization rebuilt itself pretty well post-2I but there's definitely hints of dystopia there even without getting in to the world of Q)

Well, in any case, I finally finished that one-shot I mentioned in the previous page. Criticize to your heart's content; I know it probably sucks big time, but practice makes perfect, no?

Do try to avoid blatantly subjective issues like shipping, however, as I have nothing against any of the love interests even if I write a story that ships a particular couple and gives (some of) the competitors the short end of the stick... which should already be known to the thread regulars, anyway.

Today was not a good day for Shinji Ikari.

... Well, OK, it was actually nighttime by now, so technically it was not a good night. But that's a pedantic distinction. The point is that our dear Shinji was not having a good time right now, as he stood in the living room with one certain Misato Katsuragi. Why, you ask?

"... Remind me why I have to wear this outfit again?"

It wasn't because his often-drunken slob of a guardian decided to hold a party tonight at a nearby cosplay club that she reserved specifically for that purpose. Parties were supposed to be all about having fun, right? And God knows how much he'd like to catch a break from fighting giant alien monsters from another world every other week.

"Because you look cool in it, Shinji-kun!"

It wasn't because the party's cosplay theme was "Comic Book Superhero(ine)". He might not look like it, but he happened to be a bit of a fan of American superhero comics. The escapist fantasy element of imagining himself as one of those superheroes was a good way of temporarily forgetting about the harsh reality that he lived everyday.

"... Misato-san, I look like I'm wearing my underwear on the outside."

... And the unusual abundance of busty women in Comic Book Superhero Land was certainly a major factor. But Asuka would kill him if she knew that. Maybe. He wasn't too sure about that with all the mixed signals she kept sending him.

"Don't be so negative! Losts of girls dig heroes in futuristic bodysuits and visors!"

No, ladies and gentlemen. The real reason Shinji Ikari knows that he's not having a good day...

"But I can barely see in this visor. And it chafes. And it just looks silly."

... is that Misato Katsuragi insisted that he cosplay as Scott Summers, codename Cyclops. Specifically, his trademark look from the '90s. The poor boy wanted to dress as Spider-Man, but nooooo, Misato told him that she'll not have her ward be the laughing stock of the party for cosplaying as "a guy dressed in pajamas." He could only hope that Rei, whom he assumed was pressed into attending the party by a direct order from Misato and was currently changing into her outfit in his room (the thought threatened to induce a burning blush in his face), was faring better than he was. Whatever the case, he had absolutely no idea what the outfit she was going to wear.

"You complain too much, kiddo. Besides, you should look on the bright side."

Grumbling something unintelligible under his breath, the sulking Shinji tugged on the neon-yellow briefs in a futile attempt to readjust it, before turning his face back to his guardian. She was apparently dressed as some supervillainess-turned-superheroine called "Black Cat". Why on Earth she was called a "Cat" when there was nothing remotely feline about wearing a black leather catsuit with furry ruffles and an eye-mask was beyond him. Misato said something about her being a cat burglar, though. Maybe that was it?

... Well, whatever it is, she's certainly going to be turning a lot of heads in the party, walking around with that zipper pulled down to an almost criminal low. Her figure was the envy of all women in Tokyo-3, after all.

Blushing as he realized he was staring a bit too long at his guardian, he quickly turned his face away, praying that his visor had concealed his reddened face, and attempted to distract Misato by responding to her earlier statement. "What bright side could there possibly be to wearing this... thing?"

Misato had indeed noticed Shinji's flush, but miraculously decided to not tease him for it. Instead, she opted to answer his question. "Well, now you're a perfect match for Asuka!"

As if on cue, the redhead in question stepped into the room just as Shinji opened his mouth to inquire about what Misato meant. His blush then became even redder as he took in the German girl's appearance, clad in a predominantly green spandex outfit that left little to the imagination.

"How do I look?" Asuka asked with a confident smile as she spun with a flourish.

Shinji remained silent, as he was trying to silence the perverted voice in his head screaming at him about how it seemed like she was wearing nothing at all underneath her outfit.

"Absolutely marvelous!" Misato exclaimed in accented English with a thumb-up.

"... That is a very horrible pun, Misato," Asuka said with undisguised sarcasm, before turning to the sole male in the room and grinning. "Well? See something you like, Ero-Shinji?"

As he sputtered in an attempt to come up with a response, Asuka was mentally gloating over having asserted her feminine desirability once again. "(Try and beat that, you blue-haired bitch!)"

Barely a moment passed before the door to Shinji's room finally opened, and the blue-haired pilot stepped out into the living room.

The still-grinning Asuka turned around and opened her mouth, only for whatever scathing mockery she was about to utter to die on her tongue as her eyes widened in shock. Misato herself could only gape at the scene she was beholding, while Shinji went bug-eyed, and his blushing face became positively volcanic in its redness, as his mind struggled to make sense of the visual input it was receiving.

Three facts stood out immediately about Rei Ayanami to the trio of onlookers.

One: Her hair has been dyed blonde.

Two: Her outfit was all-white.

Three: Said outfit was composed of nothing but a tight corset that was barely containing the girl's rather generous curves (considerably better than her own, an envious Asuka would note), a high-leg bikini-style bottom that was almost scandalously skimpy, over-the-elbow opera gloves and thigh-high stockings that seemed practically painted on, a furry cape that hung off her shoulders, and nothing else. The combined ensemble exposed a lot more skin that Shinji had ever had the pleasure of seeing of her, barring the one time he accidentally saw her naked. And yet somehow the fact that she was not showing everything made her look even more enticing than when she was completely nude.

Had Asuka not been busy trying to decide whether to scream in outrage at Rei daring to flaunt her figure so blatantly in front of her, or just start smacking the hell out of Shinji for staring at Rei even more intensely that he did to her, she would've proven to be the only one in the room – besides Rei, obviously – that was knowledgeable enough about superhero comics to instantly recognize who exactly Rei was cosplaying as: Emma Frost. The White Queen. X-Men supervillainess turned morally questionable superheroine. The "Slut of the Marvel Universe", as some of her detractors call her.

Unfortunately for Asuka, Rei did not give her a chance to gather her wits, as she strode forward towards her target with a clear purpose. Meanwhile, Shinji's eyes almost popped out of their sockets as they struggled to decide which part of the view before them they should focus on: The girl's enticingly bouncing chest, or her seductively swaying hips. The dilemma was interrupted by Rei finally stopping within arm's length of the boy, then turning her head to face Misato.

"Major," Rei addressed the older woman, causing her to blink as she snapped from her state of shock, "it is preferable to act 'in-character' while 'cosplaying', correct?"

Misato looked bewildered by the question for a few moments, before finally answering "Um, yeah, that's true."

"I see," Rei said, turning to face Shinji again, before raising her hand and waving it in front of his face. "Your mind is now under my control," she said matter-of-factly with a monotonous voice. "You will obey."

"... Yes, Ayanami-san," the boy slowly responded. He was too distracted by the heavenly view of Rei's cleavage below to put up any resistance.

"Ayanami-sama."

"Yes, Ayanami-sama."

"Good boy." She patted his cheek, before taking his arm between her own (and deliberately sandwiching it between two soft and warm "pillows") and leading him out of the apartment.

Exactly 2 minutes later, as the unofficial couple were exiting the apartment building, Rei could not help but slightly smirk as she heard Mt. Asuka finally erupt. The outraged screaming of the German redhead was music to her ears.

EDIT: Corrected a few misspellings.

Okay I know enough about X-men comics to appreciate the fact that is hilarious.

Come to think of it do any stories exist which involve all three of Shinji, Rei and Asuka getting closer to help work out their respective issues? I mean load of stories exist shipping Shinji with Rei or Asuka, or Rei and Asuka. Which (especially in the case of Shinji/Asuka) result in them becoming at least marginally more functional.

Whoa whoa whoa, hold the phone.

Shinji is at least passingly familiar with Spider-Man - enough to want to cosplay as him specifically, at least - but has no idea who Black Cat is?

Honestly, that kinda breaks my SOD.

Also, at the end? That should be "heard", not "heared". Honestly, son, you should know better than that.tongue

@Rise of the Shield Hero: on the wordpress link you gave, all the Baka-Tsuki stuff (chapters 1~25, basically) has been nuked to their own cessation policy.

This folder has them (and up to chapter 325) as a series of 25-chapter PD Fs.

Honestly, that kinda breaks my SOD.

That's because he never got to read more than a few comic books about him, hear the gist of his story from Toji and Kensuke, and never saw any of the stuff that prominently features Black Cat among the cast. Which kinda makes sense, considering who and what he is and that he's in Japan, not North America.

If that's still not convincing, though, I could change that part appropiately.

Come to think of it do any stories exist which involve all three of Shinji, Rei and Asuka getting closer to help work out their respective issues? Does it count if Shinji is shipped with one girl, and the other girl remains a close friend to them, if not having actually had a hand in helping them get together? Ret Nuh follows such an approach in The Swim of Things and Play It Again Shinji, both of which ship Shinji/Asuka and keep Rei as a close friend (or half-sister in the latter, due to genetics).

That said, there's a whole community on FF.Net dedicate to what you're looking for. Hopefully it's not overflowing with Sturgeon's Law's 90%.

EDIT: Actually, make that two of them.

"that was knowledge enough" should be "that was knowledgeable enough", the tenses are mixed between parts 1 and 2 of Rei's reveal, and "was music to her ears" at the very end.

Also, I have to assume that Asuka's costume is the Dark Phoenix-era Marvel Girl, but I don't remember her costume being like what was implied there.

Other than that, that was hilarious. [awesome][awesome]

Can't believe I missed those mistakes... Though I don't understand what you mean about the mixed tenses. Maybe if you quoted the parts in question and highlighted the problematic portions...?

Also, I have to assume that Asuka's costume is the Dark Phoenix-era Marvel Girl, but I don't remember her costume being like what was implied there.
I don't know which one you're referring to (here's a gallery with all her distinctive outfits and their general time frames of introduction), but the one I'm referring to is the one she wore later when she apparently reconciled with her being the Phoenix's avatar. This one, I mean.

Other than that, that was hilarious. [awesome][awesome]
Heh, thanks. I still feel like there's a large room for improvement, though.

You jump from past tense (stood out) to...some form of present tense (has been dyed) back to past tense (was all-white). "Her hair was dyed blonde" would fix everything.

I very distinctly recall reading such a fic. But shit if I can remember what the hell it was called.

That is true. However, he knows Kensuke. Kensuke is an epic nerd. If there is anyone, and I do mean anyone in Shinji's social circle who could give him the proper dirt on NA superheroes and shit, it'd be Kensuke.

...I'll admit, the main reason this is bothering me so much is that the Spider-Man franchise is just infinitely more my wheelhouse than the X-Men franchise.

Although, personally, I think I would've had Misato go for a Ms. Marvel costume.

Aaaand here I go again, boring you off your asses with my SCE crap. This time, a conversation for your perusal, concerning a certain first meeting:

Asuka: Ah, for the love of... what the hell are you doing here?

Asuka's dad: (dryly) I take it you two already met?

Asuka: (in a casual tone) This creep has been stalking me since school. Can I kick his ass?

Asuka's dad: (in an equally casual tone) Considering that he's our new landlord, I don't think so.

(Funny Background Event: Kaworu looking back and forth between the two)

Asuka: (groans) You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!...

Asuka's dad: Afraid not, kiddo. (to Kaworu) Anyway, I was surprised someone of your age would be living here all alone.

Kaworu: I moved in here myself less than a month ago.

Asuka's dad: Studying abroad?

Kaworu: (embarrassed chuckle) Not quite, but... you could say that I'm here for school reasons. I used to live in Europe.

(father and daughter both flinch at that - bad memories)

Asuka: Well, if you two are quite done with the pleasantries, I'm outta here.

Asuka's dad: Hey, don't be an ass.

Asuka: I'm not an ass. (to Kaworu) Just because we live in the same place doesn't mean we're friends or anything. Better remember that.

Kaworu: (dismissively) Yeah, yeah... (starts to walk towards his room)

Asuka: Don't 'yeah, yeah' me! I'm talking to you, asshole! (Kaworu stops) Just so we're absolutely clear: my stuff is off-limits, my room is off-limits, I am off-limits. Trespass on any of these and I will chuck you headfirst through the nearest window, your house or not. Got it?

Kaworu: Got it.

Asuka: Good.

How about Rei for Samara?

Also, is Asuka for Ashley too obvious or something?

... Kaworu is a landlord?

Asuka's dad is the officer sent by the military to observe the AEL's actions (and who later becomes ops director). Actually housing him, however, was not part of the deal; the military told Yui to take care of that herself, with barely a week of advance warning.

She promptly dumped them on Kaworu on the basis that he's living alone and his home has enough free room for two more anyway. In other words, Kaworu got volunteered - a fact Asuka's dad gleefully lampshades in that scene.

Asuka isn't meant to be a superbitch; as she says, she just wants to establish boundaries. Having proper upbringing from a loving father was a massive stabilizing influence in her life, but she's still not 100% stable. That side of her only really comes out when her mom's death is brought up however, and her reaction is less "shove issue into corner and ignore it" (which is a distinctly Japanese trait Anno put in because of his target audience) and more "I want to kill the fuckers responsible and hang their corpses out in public".

That ties into another idea I had recently. It's been set in stone for years now that Kaworu leads a vigilante group of fellow high schoolers outside piloting, with the group eventually acquiring weapons, fucking up the local gangs and even tangling with the local yakuza. What I didn't know was the catalyst that triggers that transition, but now I have an idea. Namely, Kaworu and co. are out in a friendly outing when the place suddenly gets blasted in a drive-by shooting; several civilians are killed. One of the victims is a man who was there with his family; upon seeing his young child futilely trying to rouse her dead father, Asuka has a flashback to her own mother's death (which occurred under highly similar circumstances, having been gunned down by terrorists on a science convention while shielding Asuka with her body) and almost has a panic attack on the spot.

Through Rei's connections with some of the shadier elements of the city, Kaworu and his group find out that the shooting was gang retribution. Namely, a gang tried muscling into another's territory and the shooting was aimed at assassinating the offenders' leader, with no care for collateral damage. Naturally, the group takes issue with that latter part and exacts bloody revenge by raiding the shooters' hideout; Kaworu, having seen Asuka's reaction to the shooting, invites her to join them - and she readily accepts upon hearing what they're up to.

Actually, I have no idea what to do with Mari. She has absolutely no military or otherwise combative background, unlike the others: Asuka was given USMC CQC and firearm training by her father and is a Mini-Mecha junior Ace Pilot even before she joins the Eva program, Kaworu participated in lots of street fights and is rather good at improvising, Rei got CQC training from an Old Master and self-trained into a crack marksman. Mari has absolutely nothing that can compete with that.
