I do all my writing and saving locally on my computer. If I neglect to back up, and anything awful happens, I'm the one to blame for the loss - incentive to follow back up procedures.
I use Open Office and Keep Note - both free and local to my machine.
Keep Note's a good one as I can use it for organising character profiles, equipment, world building etc and I can open a blank page and write in it.
When responding to a post in the shared stories, I - as KillerClowns astutely pointed out - copy-paste from the TV Tropes web page into a blank page in Keep Note so I've got a reference copy in my work space (saves perpetual alt-tabbing) and then write my reply, delete everything that's not my response and then copy-paste from Keep Note into the Add Post page for the thread.
If the internet connection goes down while I'm writing, I can still finish the response and post it when my connection is restored.
Thanks for the suggestions! I guess the main things I would miss are the ability to work on posts from my phone on occasion, thanks to the whole cloud storage business. That and the grammar check that catches some of my half-constructed flubs.
every little word and every little stepPersonally, I don't trust "the cloud" for my personal/private stuff. I don't trust most of the providers - Microsoft, Google etc - to take my privacy seriously if there's likely to be money in it for them.
And I grew up through the age of dial-up and have had numerous experiences of even broadband outages, so I don't like the idea of entrusting something I may want to access at any time to something that may be unreachable at random times.
I'm less concerned with my personal privacy/data being harvested, and more concerned with what it's used to create in the big picture. Stuff like the aforementioned grammar check I'm okay with. Algorithms that figure out how to best keep people glued to their screens for the sake of ad revenue, not so much. Particularly when it leads to the promoting of misinformation and bigotry because number crunchers insist it will make the company three more obscene piles of money than they would have had otherwise.
Docs did have a work offline feature. Synchronized like mad, so loss of connection halting work was never much of an issue.
I'm sure there are some alternatives out there. I'll ask around...
Edit:
Alas Will, out of town friends and family showed up mere hours after your post, and now it's all playing Tetris with schedules through to Friday. I'll try to write whenever possible though.
Edit x2: Made some good progress, hopefully done before tomorrow.
Edit x3: Dear diary, I've been kidnapped, inebriated, and will most probably not have my post done before tomorrow.

I've been coming up with Superheros. Not entirely seriously, but I've been on autopilot, it seems. I don't know if I'm doing anything serious with them yet. I am a Giver of Lame Names, but with Alicron man and Dodo lady, it's the joke they have stupid names. Not entirely seriously, but I've been on autopilot, it seems. Not entirely seriously, but I've been on autopilot, it seems. Not entirely seriously, but I've been on autopilot, it seems. Not entirely seriously, but I've been on autopilot, it seems.
"The Big League" is the top superhero team in America.
- Alicron man: Flying Brick, Light 'em Up the first "known" Ailen born on Earth, his pregnant mother's escape pod crashed in Georgia. His Super-Strength outpaces his Super-Toughness, so he needs body armor to protect him from himself, including thick gauntlets, greaves, and a horned helmet. Maybe I'll call the Unotainium Alicrorn and have that be what his name comes from.
- War Goddess: a Celtic Scottish War Goddess. Most of the time, she uses a simple none spiked mace and Battle Bolas but prefers An Axe To Grind. She also has a kite shield that reflects all damage it receives back at the attacker. She's ordinarily level-headed and carrying, but if she gets to mutch blood on her, she gets carried away. I joke that one of wonder woman's powers is making women gay, and I want to make it accurate here, maybe exposure to her pheromones or something.
- Ahool: He received advanced training with an experimental VR simulation. He also uses a prototype pod to get a whole night's sleep in three hours. He keeps it secret that he's not a Bad Ass Normal he can Telapotate.
- Space Swimmer: The Water hero and also the space hero. She can survive underwater and in space, has shark skin, sharp teeth, claws, and flies since she could fly or swim her whole life. She never learned how to just walk like an average person. Her alter ego is the only one out of Big League I thought of. She is a "Wheelchair-bound" sports reporter.
- Relief Force: He has the power of Self-Duplication. He prefers humanitarian work, saving lives from the aftermath of super fights, but he is still a Genius Bruiser. He can set the duplicates to study and acquire skills and absorb them to get new knowledge.
- Dodo Lady: The newest member, an alien of uncertain origin. She's the fastest and most agile flyer. Her name comes from a problem with the translator.
- Slothman: The super boring super bureaucrat of the team. Not even supers out of the Big League know he is a HULK MASH!-Up.
- Tech Ghost: Looks like a cowboy. Whenever a super has a problem with technology, no matter how mundane or super, he appears out of nowhere to solve it. Tech Ghost has never been seen at the base, but he does have a personalized room which indicates he actually a technophobe in his downtime. If a super hears a record out of nowhere, they know it will take Tech Ghost a while.

Are you bringing them into the thread or are you asking for advice? Because if its the latter this is not an advice thread
Sorry, I'm not good at knowing what to ask when I need feedback.
What Masterofchaos means is that this thread is not for feedback on characters in general. It's a discussion thread for the roleplay-esque Character Development Thread projects. Just a place where we can update each other regarding our participation, or ask out-of-character questions, or (especially your name is me) moan about whatever meatspace thing is bugging you. Most things, as long as they pertain in some way to the CDTs and abide by the forum rules. I suppose that includes broad feedback, but I think that sort of thing would be reserved for if you've participated in a CDT thread for a while, so we can see your character(s) 'in action'. The two current threads are Character Hilbert Inn and Character Adventure II
If you aren't interested in participating, then you're better off trying for feedback elsewhere in Writer's Block. There are some critique threads around here, but they are notoriously quiet, and you should check out the first posts so that you understand what they're about/how they're run.
In the end, you may have the best luck creating a thread of your own, though I would recommend figuring out a feedback angle first. That elusive 'thing to ask', so to speak.

every little word and every little stepOkay, allow me to try this.
- Alicorn man: The needed super prediction unit is sending Skin shifter to Alaska? It must be on the frits again. She's raw untrained undigested, and a nudist!
- War Goddess: Hey, what's wrong with that.
- Alicron: Well, you wear clothing on duty she will freeze she's completely...
- [Naked woman in the background becomes a Grizzly bear]
- Alcorn man: Bear
Will post after work tomorrow; I've been in a depressed mood all day today.
I'm aiming to post soon. Maybe. Don't quote me on it.
Meanwhile, I'm bingeing Youtube for Stand ideas. A.K.A. listening to music.
Oh, nice, I'm writing slightly longer posts again.
I'll have to show one of my sons that - he loves Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
And that's now got me wondering how my character in Hilbert Inn would react to encountering an OC from someone's fanfic of something that's "just an Anime series (or TV series, movie etc)" in his world...

Probably going to be busy for most of the week, but I squeezed a quick post in ahead of all that. I know it's a little out of order, but I figured the two groups are separated enough at this point, and if there was anyone else present who wanted to accompany Joseph for whatever reason, there's still a window to do so.
Hope you're feeling better today, Masterofchaos.
Shyhero, I don't think you quite grasped what I was trying to say, or what we're doing here. This isn't the right thread for presenting writing for feedback. You're welcome to join one of the active threads I linked in my previous post and ask for feedback here later on, but you must make sure you read the first post and additional resources so that you understand how it works.
It's my turn already? My computer wouldn't turn on, so I took it to have it examined and fixed. That was past Friday, and they still haven't even told me what is wrong with it.
So I'm currently writing from mobile. Shouldn't be too much of a hassle to write from here for me.
Well, the Stand user should stand out, at least. It'll probably click when someone screams a song title and things get bizarre.
Speaking of which... Strange sentence of the day: "Playboy Energizer Bunny turned the floor into lava."
I've got a few Stand ideas I've taken a shine to, which I might elaborate on.

And I'm back in the States, COVID worries aside (clean PCR test and all). Will De Regio, I'll trust you to time when Aseyu is doing being Aseyu.

Welcome back, hope you really enjoyed your holiday.
I don't think I've ever celebrated with the word "contiguous" more than this morning.
With my maze problem out of the way, I've got a brief reprieve before the rest of my finals come breathing down my neck.
Looks like not a lot has moved since last week, so may I ask if any writers in the hotel lobby group besides Masterofchaos intend on having their characters interact with or join Joseph before he gets to elevating?
every little word and every little stepI'm currently working on it. Sorry it's taken so long, haven't had enough time or ideas to come up with a post.
Sweet, thanks!
Though my question still stands for daird, Strix, and Will. Just want to know when we can safely divide the groups/posting order.
every little word and every little stepI hope to post tonight. No promises.
@Ryuhza, if you want to send Joseph on, that's fine with me.

By now, it should be clear to all except the most dense of us that sheep are secretly conspiring to kill us all and steal our pants.
Bagh, just finished writing about some crappy tech stuff and I am dying for a breather. Got an opening to write here these next few days before things start to get Thanksgiving-y. Out of town friends being in town and all that it entails.
I still do have that other character coming with an already stupid big intro post, just haven't had time to work on it further because I've been dogpiled by schoolwork. I'll try to get to it tomorrow, and hopefully work up the gumption to see it to completion.
...unless some people want to post in some existing locations, to which I'll have no choice but to respond posthaste.
every little word and every little stepI should probably find myself a decent alternative to Google Docs while I'm at it. I wrote myself into such a frenzy that now I care about web privacy (moreso the world informed by the economic incentivizing of data extraction. Look up Jaron Lanier, Shoshana Zuboff, and other like figures, they've got some neat ideas).
